Tavirait is a restaurant somewhatit is a restaurant somewhat old fashioned---lovey appointments, quiet, white table clothes---and the food is excellent as well as reasonably priced---this iswhere I would take a hot date5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMTerrific menu choices andTerrific menu choices and nice wine list. Everything our group ordered was delightful. The cuisine is not 100 percent Portuguese. Some dishes are closer to the Portuguese cuisine and others are closer to the French and other Mediterranean cuisines. I think overall I notice a fusion of European cuisines using the Portuguese "concept" dishes as a base. I am from Portugal, so I find this to be a creative way of adapting the dishes to the American clientele who is more familiar with French and Italian cuisines. Still a great restaurant to visit and I will be back frequently with my American friends. I have not found a restaurant in the DC Metro area that serves 100 % Portuguese cuisine. You will find them in NJ, NY, RI, and MA.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat graduation dinnerHaving passed Tavira's building thousands of times, we thought we would give it a try after our son's graduation from UMD. And we are glad that we did! The kids had never eaten Portugese and it had been years since their parents did. Everyone enjoyed their meal, the service was wonderful, our waiter suggested a more appropriate wine to share. We will be going back!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMPortugese GemTavira makes really authenic Portugese food. The portions are generous as are the menu selections. Our waiter recited the menu including the specials from memory. The service was good even considering it was Mother's Day.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMlunch with a friendWe were happily seated in a quiet corner of an unoccupied room since we had several months worth to catch up on. The soups we had were excellent, and we each enjoyed a sandwich with it. Very good service - not pushy but attentive.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful & Delicious FoodWe went to Tavira for an adult family dinner. I noted in the OT Reservation that we needed a quiet table since several of us were hard of hearing. They put us at a very nice round table in the corner - we had no problem hearing each other. The waiter was wonderful and the food great. There were 6 of us and everyone enjoyed their meal. We will likely be back again.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMNot a bad place but a little pricyI came here with a Capital Deal. I got a good value for two entrees and two glasses of wine for $40. Everything else was an add-on. The quality of the food was very good. The place in general is a little expensive so I probably wouldn't come back too often but worth the stop. I'm glad I came.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMAhother very positive dinnerAhother very positive dinner experience......comfortable atmosphere, attentive service and outstanding food and wine choices, top to bottom on the menu.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMTavira - a diamond in the roughAs someone mentioned, once past the idea the main entrance is from a parking garage, everything was great. We felt welcome by the greeting from the maitre d. The dining room is reminiscent of sunny Portugal, set apart from the bar area. Although the noise carried over, it was not enough to make it disagreeable. The waiter was friendly and professional. We had a nice Portuguese white wine from a varied wine list. The food was excellent. We started with a roasted red pepper stuffed with crab. I ordered calf's liver (a nice thick cut) with onions, roasted zucchini, carrots and mashed potatoes. My companion had salmon (a very generous portion). We shared a delicious Grandma's fried milk dessert. The coffee was excellent. Will definitely return.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMGood place to go that is closeGood place to go that is close in, has excellent food, a good and affordable wine list and very nice waiters/waitresses.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMA perfect place for a lunchA perfect place for a lunch with friends. Mostly adults, quiet tables, great food and super service.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic mix of MediterraneanFantastic mix of Mediterranean and Portuguese dishes. Lots of fresh seafood. An interesting list of Portuguese wines not often seen in other resturants.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMNicely decorated rooms, andNicely decorated rooms, and carpeting!! which did wonders to keep the noise level down on a busy Saturday night. Waiters knowledgeable about describing the numerous nightly specials. An enjoyable experience. We will return!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMI had not been to Tavira forI had not been to Tavira for several years and was happy to discover that it was just as wonderful as it was way back then. It is located (improbably, for such a lovely restaurant) in the basement of an office building and can be difficult to find, even when you find the office building itself, but it's worth the trouble. The food was excellent, the server personable and very helpful, and the ambiance lovely -- even in the basement of an office building. By all means, take the time to find Tavira and enjoy.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Portuguese restaurantGreat Portuguese restaurant and the decor is great once you get past the "mall" upstairs4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMwe visited Tavira to celebratewe visited Tavira to celebrate a birthday. We were greeted and the specials were explained. The service from the waitstaff was exceptional-- they took time to explain the menus and give several recommendations--including a good accounting of the various wines we were considering. Conversation was easy even as the room filled up around 7:30 p.m.
I would definitely return.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything was great. WeEverything was great. We especially like that the tables are spaced such that you are not in your neighbor's lap.
