A word from Tavern
Tavern is the third restaurant from the chef and sommelier team of Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne, who also own Lucques restaurant and AOC winebar. This is their West Los Angeles outpost, which serves as a local gathering spot for the Brentwood crowd. Chicly designed by Jeffrey Alan Marks, Tavern encompasses three separate, yet connected spaces: a glass roofed atrium dining room, a large blue walled bar and a café space called the Larder that features casual dining, bakery, retail and prepared foods to go. The restaurant serves Suzanne Goin’s signature California/Mediterranean cuisine with just a touch of a classic American influence.Continued

  • "again TAVERN met expectations, this time for Easter Brunch with the family..we are a family of fussy foodie eaters and everything at Tavern is perfect. First, the atrium is absolutely beautiful with live potted trees, a soothing color scheme, lovely velvet settee booths, zinc top tables, all skylit and airy. The food never disappoints and the service is elegant. We also love the clientele mix. Our food choices were all over the menu, salmon, chicken, chorizo and eggs and the trio salad and everyone was happy"

  • "I do like this place and would've given it a better rating had the service been better. From the moment we walked in I felt the pretentious attitude of the hostess. She sat me in a section that I didn't want to be seated in and when I asked if she could accommodate the request I made and left with the gentleman who confirmed my reservation she gave me a lot of unnecessary attitude and left a bad taste in my mouth. The waiter picked up right where her attitude left off and was very cold. When we asked for salt he pointed and the crumbs left from the salt that they give with butter and walked away. The pretentious and cold service ruined our brunch that we looked forward to."

  • "The Tavern was suggested to me for a last minute business dinner when two other local restaurants were booked at the only time window that the group had available. From the valet parking to the last bite, it was a very enjoyable experience for our whole party. My favorite German beer and my associate's favorite Belgium beer were a positive sign, followed by the bacon wrapped dates and cheese and meat plate. The main courses all were very tasty and visually appealing and ranged from scallops and fish to chicken and steaks. I definitely recommend the Tavern and will be returning the next time I am in the area. bb from Atlanta"

  • "I had a lovely birthday brunch at Tavern. Their food is fabulous, they offer organic pressed juice, and the scones/pastries are to-die-for. My only moment of not being completely elated was more about the people sitting next to us that the restaurant itself. I had a 2-year-old boy doing headstands on the booth bench next to me, and playing with his iPad at full volume. It was a little distracting, (and didn't seem to be the norm in the restaurant...) but again, not really a complaint about the Tavern itself. Tavern is fantastic and now one of my most favorite spots!"

  • "As for the food, I was expecting unique flavors and menu choices. The larder plank with cheeses and meats was attractive and tasty. The chopped salad with sweet potatoes was tasteless. The tempura fish tacos were also bland, and the tempura itself not delicate. The servings were generous, but the wine pour was small. Prices were reasonable; ambience and service excellent. I would try it again and order other dishes."

  • "The food does not live up to the expectations inspired by the description, ie, I could not detect a hint of ginger in the " gingered beets with grilled char." The much touted cauliflower soup was tasteless, even with the toasted almond garnish. Such a disappointment! Perhaps it would be easier to accept if the soup wasn't $10 for a small cup! The bread is non-descript. The burgers were reported to be okay, but food described so beautifuly should live up to the hype, especially when an entre is $28!!"

  • "Tavern is a beautiful restaurant with terrific food. However, the service that day when I lunched with a good friend was rather tragic. Our waitress was sweet and winsome, but hopelessly unmindful of the job. We were not offered anything to drink and had to wave for a busboy to get her attention to order. It was a Monday and the restaurant was not busy. Scrumptious food, however. Difficulty getting check in a timely fashion at the end. Shame really.... some members of the staff could benefit from some guidance and training."

  • "Had dinner here with family to celebrate my mother's 87th birthday and, as always, the service was impeccable and gracious. My mother did not like what she ordered and the floor manager came by to take care of her and to get her a different dish (which she much preferred). Our waiter was fantastically patient and attentive. It was a lovely and memorable dinner."

  • "Had to frequently wave our waiter over for one thing or another. We finally had him leave the wine bottle on the table so we could pour it ourselves. They didn't look understaffed. Maybe there was a problem in the kitchen--but then again, our waiter (if he was a good waiter) would have let us know there was a problem or at least covered the situation in a person-to-person manner. Not just be MIA."

  • "I came back here for my mother's birthday. Unfortunately their specialty chicken dish was so overloaded with salt it was practically inedible. My wife's dish was almost raw. She also ordered a side of onion rings and fries that were swimming in oil. The draft beer was not good either. Bottom line, I won't be back."

  • "We first visited Tavern in the first three months when it originally opened. We found the service and environment to be nice - but the food left something to be desired. Overall - everything was too salty - and nothing really stood out. At the end of the day, it was basic "American Cuisine" - and did not warrant a second visit. But - several years later we decided to give it another shot - and were again disappointed. Again - everything was overly salted (even the basic greens salad). Moreover, the "Devil's Chicken" dish was nothing short of appalling. The service was okay - but a bit of an attitude when they realized we were not ordering that much food or drink (sorry - the wife's pregnant - so you'll have to give me a pass)."

Feels like you are in a controlled outdoor space. Then you notice that the service is excellent: friendly yet professional and willing to work with you to get just what you want. As expected for a Suzsanne Groin restaurant, the food was also excellent. We shall return."

  • "One of the reasons I love Tavern that it remains true to the seasons. If it is Spring, I know I'm going to find something with English peas or asparagus or whatever looks great at the Farmer's Market. The fish will be fresh and spring lamb is always prized at this time of year. Any meal, be it breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner is always excellent. May I also add they make a great burger and their fries are the best anywhere.. Well, maybe a tie for best fries with Bouchon:)"

The light, the high ceilings, the attention to detail (great salt & butter) The cookies(oh the cookies) It is the kind of place , where one can sit back, be taken care of but not fussed over. It is a great spot for lunch. At dinner time the dining room seems to grow noisier (diner beware) but it is still a great , lovely festive, convivial spot. Must be a reflection of Ms. Goin and her staff."

  • "whether a spontaneous lunch, treat or takeout at larder, a grownup drinks date or special occasion dinner in the blue room, or a delicious EASY westside brunch in the atrium, the tavern family always delivers. at tavern, you do not have to stand outside for an hour, share a table with loudmouthed strangers, pray aloud that they know how to prepare at least some of the foods on their menu, roll your eyes at the pretentious ingredients, or beg for attention from disaffected waitstaff. both the front and the back of the house at tavern are just the right mix of professional, lively, fashionable, fresh and comfortable, and the prices are within reach."

  • "I live close to Tavern. The food and service are very hit or miss. At times, the food is outstanding. These times are rare, however. Most of the time, the food is just good or even bland. I've taken many friends there over the years, and many are not impressed by the meal. The wait staff is likewise unpredictable. At times, the server is at your table too much. Most often, however, it takes forever for the waitstaff to come around to take orders. Our last visit it took over 30 minutes to have our order taken. The water refills are quick, though. The chic atmosphere (why I return) and the high prices are consistent."

  • "I used to go here when it was a Hamberger Hamlet. When the Hamlet closed, I didn't return but I heard great things about the Tavern. President Obama had a fundraiser dinner here. I avoided it mainly because of the high prices. But it was my wedding anniversary and I wanted to take my wife somewhere nice and close to home for lunch. It was delightful and I would be glad to return."
