Diner Reviews
  • "Tucked away almost without notice, this Eastman School of Music neighborhood gem has been wonderful every time I've visited! This time, the bacon, crumbly blue cheese pasta was fantastic under my steak. It was a wonderful night to visit with my daughter for my birthday dinner! Being a server herself, she playfully challenged our server who lived up to the fun and provided excellent service. Scribbling cartoons and sketches on the paper-topped tablecloth while drinking an excellent Belgian draft completed my evening."

  • "Very accommodating. Inattentive server. Great owners. Needs wine list updating."

  • "Outstanding food and service. This was our first time and we will be back!! We will also recommend to family, friends and neighbors. The food was outstanding from the appetizer to the dessert--I rate everything a 10. The apple tart dessert was heavenly. The sirloin was a generous portion, tender and cooked perfectly, as was the horse-radish and bacon mash potatoes."

  • "Very accommodating, did not like the first martini ordered and was given another of my choice to replace it. Food was delicious. Mac and cheese was awesome, the "cobb" salad and Thai salad presentation was beautiful and tasted wonderful. Looking forward to another trip to try some of the other items on the menu. Only downside was music was a little too loud so hearing was difficult."

  • "For the price of our dinner, we could have gone to a more elegant & elaborate experience. The service was pleasing but the food was comparable to a fast food restaurant. Will not be returning."

  • "I had 7:30 reservations for a group of five. When we arrived the receptionist told us it would be about ten minutes. That was fine because it gave us time to order chocolate martini's for everyone in the group. They were very tasty. The bar area was nice, the lighting was just right. The bartenders were great. Everyone smiling and having a good time. Good place to stop in before a show at the Eastman. Dinner was very delicious. All five of us agreed. It was the second time my wife and I were in there for drinks and dinner. We will be back soon."

  • "My wife and I went to dinner at Tavern 58 for the second time. As before , the food is what I would describe as eclectic and delish. There is no salt or pepper on the table and none needed as the food is flavored so well. It not frequently that I finish everything but at the end of dinner, the plate was clean. Our server Melissa was outstanding as were the other employees.Everyone was friendly and helpful. Our water glasses were constantly kept full without the server being intrusive . Unfortunately we did not get to the bar as we did the first time as it was packed. The have a great assortment of cocktails and again the bartender is very knowledgeable , friendly and efficient . We will definitely be back."

  • "The wait staff were friendly and attentive, but the food was sub-par. My chicken came out with un-melted shredded cheese on top, and my companion's spinach was more garlic and salt than greens. While over-seasoned, the food would have been decent at $10 a plate. We could have done much better for Tavern 58's $20 a plate price point. Similarly the decor didn't achieve the ambiance they seem to have been ttrying for. They had a deal going on that essentially offered us a free $50 gift certificate to their soon-to-open second location. It's telling that we didn't take it."

  • "It was a very typical great evening at Tavern58. Food superb, great service and since we has had an early reservation the noise level was moderate. Planning on coming back many times."

  • "We made reservations on line... so easy. Got an email right away to confirm. Even got a call from Tavern 58 on Friday to confirm. . We had a party of 8 and the table was ready for us. We all had a drink in the bar area first. Blue Cosmos were very yummy... all the women had those. Guys all seemed happy with the beer selection. Our waitress was very nice and a good personality. She also did a great job. The food was very tasty. I had Chicken Scallopini. Everyone said they like the food. You could get burgers or sandwiches or entrees. So you could eat cheaper or get the more expensive dinners. Everyone agreed it was a place to come back to. All of the women ended the dinner with a Grasshopper Martini. Very tasty."

  • "Chose an early timing (5PM) to avoid rush and save time for a movie; unhurried meal, excellent crab cakes; would have liked to taste soup du jour (butternut squash) but only available as a bowl, so I passed. Beef tenderloin w/lump crab beurre blanc, beautifully crusted and rare interior; superb grilled asparagus. One small distraction (unavoidable given the floor plan, I'd wager): beer kegs rolling through the dining area. A minor point, to be sure. Chocolate Lava cake was delicious but somewhat dormant.. no lava! All in all, I'd go again, absolutely."

  • "Dined here probably 4 or 5 times over the last 5-6 years and we've always had an excellent meal and experience. Similar menu as in the past so went with what we were familiar with and weren't disappointed. Music being piped through was a little loud and not what I woud've expected (more rock than soft). But otherwise service was excellent."

  • "We love this place ! Truly is a neighborhood gem. Off the beaten path; you have to know it's there to go. The food is spectacular and the service is always extremely polite and helpful. The food was phenomenal. I had a chicken cheddar panini and the chipotle mayo on it was second to no other."

  • "Tavern 58 is one of the best places to eat if you’re a food snob, like good food and not sure where to go, defiantly worth dinning at and returning too. The GENNY ALE, CRAB AND CHEESE FONDUE is heaven in your mouth. Well at least my thoughts of what heaven will be like. The CRAB CAKES are divine. I had one of their specials for my main course, 1-Lobster tail, 2-colossal Shrimp and 2- Jumbo Scallops served over crab stuffed Ravioli and if was delish."

  • "I had previously dined at the restaurant and thought it was great! However, this last experience was not so great. The service was extremely slow and we were the only table in the place when we first arrived. It took over 30 minutes to get our appetizers and the rest of the dinner followed suit. I had brought folks from out of town and was quite embarrassed by the service and the size of our dinner portions. Our dinners were small in portions and quite frankly not worth the money that we were charged."

  • "Good food, but not exactly romantic. Very loud and a dress casual jeans and button shirt vibe , not dress up special night out"

  • "The service and food were exceptional. The one issue we had was that we had a reservation for 7:00PM and were not seated until 7:45PM. It was very crowded and it seemed like people were seated based on when they arrived, not based on their reservation time. It would have been a better experience if their availability had been more realistic within the OpenTable application."

  • "Have been here many times with my spouse and have never been disappointed. Took my two daughters with us to experience really great food presented the way it should be. Wish we had more opportunities to eat here. Thank you for a GREAT birthday dinner."

  • "I love the proximity of Tavern 58 to the Eastman Theater - it's a great place for dinner before a concert or drinks after. The food is superior - especially the beef tenderloin medallions with crab; the specials are always innovative and delicious. The portions are just right and the service is attentive. All in all, a wonderful restaurant."

  • "We consistently return to Tavern 58 when we are in Rochester to attend a concert at the Eastman Theater. You just can't beat the convenience (walking distance from the theater, waitstaff know how to get you out on time) and the food (menu has something for everyone). This particular evening ranked just slightly lower than our usual awesome experience because of how crowded the restaurant was; we've never been there when it hasn't been full, but it seemed almost overflowing this time and the noise level corresponded. Nevertheless, our dinners met our expectations and we were still walking out the door at 7:30; had a great time at the Pops concert too!"

  • "As usual, dinner at Tavern 58 is everything I expect it to be. The Seafood Medley was incredible, bursting with distinct and amazing flavors with every bite. I love the thought that goes into planning every dish, and the presentation is always creative and beautiful. Our server, Shelby, was excellent as always. She makes thoughtful recommendations and clearly loves working there - she is proud of the menu and it shows. I always recommend Tavern to anyone who asks - and it is always a great time when I go there!"

  • "We celebrated our Anniversary at Tavern 58 last Saturday and the waiter asked if it was a special occasion when he came to our table. After dinner he brought us champagne, on the house, and we thought that was very thoughtful. His service was great and our meal was wonderful, as usual."

  • "I love Rochester's nightlife and great restaurants, and one of the best late-nite finds is Tavern 58, which combines intimate dining within a vibrant setting at a handy location on University Ave, perfect for Jazz Fest goers and after-theater or movie. The ambience is warm and casual, the chef is outstanding with innovative and delicious specials, the service staff is very friendly and professional, and the owners are always on-hand and welcoming. The bar room is vibrant with a live folk guitar on Wednesdays, and burgers served in the bar are far from bar food! Tavern 58 is a 'don't miss!' little gem -- I highly recommend!"

  • "The food was beautifully presented. My husband had the NY strip steak and said it was the best strip he had ever had, very juicy, tender and flavorful. I had grilled scallops with butternut squash ravioli, scallops were cooked perfectly however ravioli was a little chewy but great flavor. The only negative would be the noise level. The tables are so close together and rooms are small so noise level is high."

  • "Tavern 58 gets a plus for the service and quality of the drinks and entrees, but a minus for the decreasing portion sizes combined with increasing prices. The caesar salad we shared was OK but not remarkable; entrees were excellent but small. Although the LITTLE rolls and accompanying sauces are delicious, there were only 4 of them and the tiniest “spots” of butter imaginable. For dessert we had the chocolate lava cake, which was very small and rather dry, and the raspberry creme brûlée, which was a nice creme brûlée but I didn’t really taste raspberry. The bill came to $125 + tip for 3 people. Tablecloths were covered with paper, which does not contribute to an “upscale” atmosphere. If I could give this place 3.5 stars I would."

  • "Had dinner at Tavern58 at Gibbs on a Saturday night. The dining room was busy even with us getting there on the early side at 6pm. I have been here several times before. The menu had the same wide selection of items. The pretzels with mustard were a good appetizer. My three dinner companions enjoyed their meals which included crab cakes, butternut squash and sweet potato soup, lobster ravioli, and beef tenderloin medallions. My request for a medium well hanger steak came with it still bleeding, which was quickly taken care of, but had me eating my meal well after the others were finished."

  • "We had always experienced exceptional meals and service at Tavern 58, so selected this restaurant for a special Anniversary dinner for our parent's 65th celebration. The music was too loud to converse, but the staff were quick to accommodate our request to turn down the volume when we arrived. Our server was above excellent & very knowledgeable!!! The menu & specials were varied & an interesting mix of food combinations. I chose the butternut squash/sweet potato/shrimp soup to begin, but unfortunately there wasn't a single shrimp to be found! I selected a Caesar salad topped with grilled streak. The salad was a perfect blend of romaine, cheeses and anchovies however, every piece of steak was tough & marbled with grizzle. Disappointing!"
