Diner Reviews
  • "The service was awesome! We went for my daughters 18th Birthday and the place was amazing!"
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "At the main entrance from the "courtyard" the signage was not visibly from where we parked so we ended up walking in through the patio by mistake - something we saw a lot of people doing. There are a portable chalk board sign in the courtyard when we left which would have been visible from the parking lot but didn't have the restaurant name on it. The food was very good (with the exception of bland calamari). But the prices were too high. The restaurant looks lovely, but being seated at a booth that backs directly to the kitchen prep area is less than ideal - you get to listen to the wait staff chitchat (complain) while they stand around because they aren't very busy. Then, as the place fills up the entire restaurant gets really loud."

  • "I heard about this restaurant from a work associate and took a couple of friends to dinner here. The food was good and reasonably priced. We were there on a Monday night and it was a light crowd and they said it gets busier later in the week so you probably will need reservations."

  • "Justin was a great server and gave great recommendations (try the Eggplant Caprese and the Beignets with caramel sauce!!). Manager came to check on us and shook our hands as we left. Very personable staff!!"

  • "Been driving by this restaurant in our neighborhood for weeks and finally dined there and had a fantastic meal. The Halibut (special of the night) was outstanding, but I was surprised at the cost of $39. For mashed potatoes and halibut and I added a vegetable of green beans which makes the dish $45.!! That was a but high for that entree... The margarita pizza was wonderful too. My husband ordered the burger and said it was one of the better burgers he has had. We ordered carrot cake and it came chilled and firm with very good flavor, however it seemed just a wee but dry, but perhaps that was due to it being refrigerated. I would try a different dessert next time. All in all, please try this restaurant out!!"

  • "The food, service and ambiance for our brunch were very good. We will go again and try them for dinner. Brunch is highly recommended,"

  • "The company was great, as was the food. Just that the waiter was a bit obnoxious. He commits the cardinal sin of bringing the bill before we were done ordering (we wanted dessert). Obviously, he wanted to close out the table. We complained to the manager. So, the waiter apologies 'insincerely'. Then after we are finished with dessert, he's rude enough to ask "can I give this to you now?". Life is too short to experience rude waiters. If I come back, I'll make sure I don't get this guy's table."

  • "Good bar and reasonable food. Outdoor dining area, but no view."

  • "We have eaten here 3 times and each time were disappointed. I had the lentil soup which was quite good. We each had the chopped chicken salad and could have done better at a fast food place. The lettuce was mostly white, the chicken was not fresh baked in house; rather it was the packaged variety. That was obvious because the cubes were perfectly shaped and the meat had a lot of sodium and water. There was nothing about this salad, especially the $13 cost that would impress anyone. My dining partner had the meatball appetizer which he liked. I tasted the sauce and it was not great but good. I would be reluctant to go back unless we hear that something has changed dramatically."

  • "From beginning to end our meal was delicious! We started with tender, flavorful Calamari. My husband enjoyed a Spinach & Pear Salad and tender Lamb Chops, I enjoyed the Beet Salad and the perfectly cook Sea Bass (Yum!!). We finished off this amazing meal with a delicious slice of Cheese Cake w/berries. Everything about this restaurant is Top Notch!!! We'll definitely return often!!!"

  • "The service was exceptional, the setting romantic. I would have given a higher rating except for the price of the dishes would lend themselves to being perfectly prepared. The lamb was all but raw. Everything else was good and nicely presented."

  • "Tavern on the Coast has been an excellent find since they first opened. Their menu has great variety and the nightly specials are always a great choice. The interior finishes, staff and service are excellent. We visit them frequently! An added surprise Friday night was a special friend from Farrantelli's who poured our wine and paid special attention to our needs throughout the evening."

  • "I really like Tavern! The food is excellent, although very pricey. Ambiance was much better this time as it wasn't so crowded, thus reducing the noice level and upping the enjoyment factor."

  • "Overall a very nice experience with a few caveats. One of my pet peeves is always when an occasion is not acknowledged. We went for a birthday and told them this in the reservation. Not a single mention or even a "Happy Birthday." Very disappointing. The hostess was not very attentive. When we arrived she was talking and taking pictures of a baby. She did not turn around and acknowledge us. She continued for almost a minute while totally ignoring us. Not exactly a welcome environment for the first visit to a restaurant. Then she sat us in the bar which we were also not thrilled with. Our server was so so. On the good side, the food was terrific although a bit pricey. We will probably give them another chance since we live close"

  • "Best restaurant we have found in Dana Point. Excellent food and service. Brian was great as was the whole staff and experience. Steak cooked to perfection. Sea bass also outstanding. Will make this first on the list. Also, side note, Lois the host made us feel very welcome ."

  • "We are thrilled to have a restaurant that offers great food, lovely ambiance and can accommodate allergies knowledgably. Thank you Tavern on the Coast. you are our new go to place to eat."

  • "We had the buttermilk chicken and meatloaf. The chicken was overdone and tasteless. My wife ate a few bites of the meatloaf and quit. The vegetables, beans and broccoli were ok, but had way too much garlic. Service was attentive and the noise level was very high, even though there weren't very many patrons."

  • "We were spoiled by our attentive waiter at this beautifully designed restaurant. My Chilean Sea Bass was so fresh it wiggled and melted like butter in my mouth. The gourmet sides were unique and flavorful and the wine was delicious. It was nice to be able to sit outside on a cold winter evening in a romantic setting next to the fireplace and still feel cozy and warm with the very efficient heat lamps. The waiter was able to turn down my husband's heat lamp and turn mine up so we both were comfortable. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "When our regular favorites didn’t have a table for us at our preferred time, we decided to try this Dana Point eatery which recently opened. We were pleasantly surprised! This is a first-class operation. Friendly welcome, comfortable environment, good service, and really outstanding cuisine. The special dessert was a plate of beignets with a tasty caramel sauce. Super! We’ll be going back. Our only negative experience was a noisy bar area during the happy hour, but once the bar patrons departed, everything was good."

  • "22nd anniversary. Decided to gamble on an expensive place without knowing much about it. (Read reviews. This is my first written, btw! This good-next: Chart House bad!) Pleasantly surprised! Given a nice table and an option to move outside if we wanted. (Stayed indoors because we didn't want to listen to traffic!) Didn't really know what some of the menu items were but out server explained. Food was excellent! When the manager noticed my wife was not going to eat the beans that was part of her entrée, he exchanged that part for a delicious salad she enjoyed! (Nice!) Thanks! To top it off, a dessert we did not order arrived with a "Happy 22nd Anniversary" note on the plate written in chocolate! (VERY NICE!) Bottom line: GO FOR IT!"

  • "Would like to see a few more standard entrée items included. For the price, I think potatoes & vegetable should be included. Really, how much do those items actually cost the merchant to buy, prepare & serve. Who wants to pay $28 for meatloaf? Surprised that a well drink, vodka up with a twist, was $11. That's per person. Overall, we liked the décor, food & attentiveness paid by the waiter. Had to pour own wine since he was busy with a party in the private room most of the night. Location is nice for us since we live just up the street, but wouldn't go all the time due to prices. There's plenty of places to eat in the area that offer good happy hour pricing for food & drinks."

  • "Waited a VERY long time for dinner to come. Our waiter kept coming to our table telling us we were next. We could see the kitchen and meals were coming up, not ours. There were some excited exchanges between the managers and the wait staff. They did offer us a free dessert for our wait. our table was against a wall that had all the glassware for the restaurant, so the ENTIRE night, the wait staff was reaching behind our heads to grab water and wine glasses. Very strange set up."

  • "The food was good, not great. The service when we arrived was attentive, after we received the food, it disappeared. The orange juice I was served was sour, the waiter took it back, came back to the table and agreed, nothing else was offered(bad customer service). And lastly, when the bill came, they tried to overcharge me by adding an extra meal, when I showed the bill to the waiter, he said he was sorry, brought over the revised bill, and again nothing was said or done to try and make me feel good about returning. I would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "I live just two blocks away and I have been patiently waiting for a great walk-to restaurant for years. I think we found it. "Tavern" opened in April and initially their wine and entree specials prices were a bit much. On Saturday I took some friends for dinner and everything fit. The service from Brian and Darren exceeded our expectations and every meal and wine choice was an excellent value for an upscale restaurant. Looking forward to their new lunch schedule in December!"

  • "The food was really, really good and the ambiance very nice. The 3 of us enjoyed everything and plan on returning to try other things on the menu. The service was EXCEPTIONAL!"
    Dined on 10/15/2013
  • "I wasn't impressed and hope they listen to a sincere review. They need to improve on the ambiance. Lower your lights and stop sending your manager to tables with a canned pitch. The atmosphere was like a CPK corporate run restaurant. It has potential but spending $150 on a Saturday night could have been $300 with some music, lighting and more selection on the menu. The server is why I gave three stars."

  • "We enjoyed everything we ordered; it was all very fresh & well-made. Our only problem was our salad; we asked for the dressing to be served "on the side", as we always do. We did receive dressing on the side, but our salad was also dressed!"

  • "I guess we over anticipated this Tavern. We really wanted to like a local place that looks great and has good food, but something is missing. It's just not quite what we were looking for ... the food was good, but overpriced for the neighborhood. The drinks were good, but also overpriced and they put their own "twist" on them and they weren't quite right. The service was friendly and attentive, but almost too much so. We were there early on a Thursday night, so it wasn't too crowded or noisy yet. If you decide to check it out, the short ribs were very good. Like somebody else noted ... the beet salad was delicious, but the dressing was quite salty. Maybe we will try it again in 6 or 8 months and see if things have improved."

  • "Sure doesn't seem like a chef who trained at Bouchon. We have dined at Bouchon in Yountville, Beverly Hills and even Santa Barbara (not the same) and the Tavern on the Coast doesn't compare in any way. Too bad, we were hoping for a good restaurant in the area."

  • "We made a reservation on Opentable, but got there very early. At least they honored my reservation - but, we decided to sit at the bar (they have tables). We started off at the bar, and moved to a table (at the bar) when one opened up. Since the menu and service are the same, we had a great time. Food is always good here. The wine list is okay (to above average). The prices, though, are a bit high for a 'local eatery'. It's basically having a 'fine dining establishment' (with accompanying high prices) in a 'neighborhood location'. I hope it works out. Because, I really like the food and service here."
    Dined on 8/3/2013
  • "Once again, the place was packed. We declined the table by the bar. The server was excellent. The food was great (for some) and just okay (for others). I hope they make the scallops dish a regular item (instead of a special). The pasta special is 'hit-or-miss' - depending on the day. I loved the 'special birthday dessert'. The wine by the glass selections are very limited. The prices are on par with the Ritz-Carlton restaurants (just down the street). One thing, if you're driving southbound on PCH - it's really difficult to get to. And, parking is limited - since the place is packed. But, there's street parking nearby."
    Dined on 8/30/2013
  • "We went in on a Saturday night. The place was packed. We were seated at the table closest to the bar. This is not a good seating area. There is no divider between the bar and dining area. So people on barstools (and the people standing behind them) are right next to the table. We basically had someone's rear end right next to us - at eye level. Not a pleasant sight for eating. The food and the wine selection are great. But, the wines selection (by the glass) are somewhat limited. I've been here quite a few times, and I haven;t had a dish that I didn't like."
