Tavern on the Bay is a Southern New Jersey historical landmark. Housed in a Victorian mansion built in 1884, it is equipped with a bar, restaurant, and a marina. It is located in the quaint and charming sea village of Somers Point, just a 15-minute drive to Atlantic City, NJ.

  • "From our entrance, nothing went right...door was locked. Hostess asked us to wait a moment and returned almost 10 minutes later to seat us. Waitress also asked us for a moment when she brought out only 2 of 3 ordered appetizers. It arrived when other 2 diners had finished. Entrees arrived after a VERY LONG WAIT and 2 of the 3 were undercooked...RAW. A busboy spilled water on one of the diners at our table. We tried to be understanding, since this place is under new ownership, but this was an awful dining experience! Only thing enjoyable was the wine we ordered and the view."

  • "This restaurant is in a beautiful setting overlooking the Bay however they management clearly needs to review and improve on every aspect of their operation. When we arrived we were told our table was not ready. Fine we went to the bar and waited 10 minutes for the bartender to prepare 4 identical simple ingredient drinks. That should have been a it off of things to come. We finally got seated at a table that was open and set up from the minute we went to the bar. Ordered appetizers and our meal. The calamari was horrible and after waiting close to an hour for the main courses we paid for our drinks and apps and left at 10:15 to have blueberry pie for dinner at Steve & Cookies, one of the best restaurants in the margate area."

  • "My family ate at this restaurant last weekend. We arrived on time for our reservation and were told they were running 10-15 minutes behind. We were asked to wait outside by the bar. Over 30 minutes later we were offered an inside table in a noisy area with very loud live music. We opted to eat outside on the deck. The waitress came over and said " I'm sure they told you the kitchen is running way behind". Actually we had not been told that but at this point everyone was hungry so we ordered. We received our food over 90 minutes after arriving and even at that point we only received our meals after complaining to the restaurant manager who brought each of our meals out one at a time! Sadly, when the food did arrive it was fair at best."

  • "We were asked to wait in the bar for our table, while there were clearly many available, we waited 45 minutes to be seated. After being seated for 20 minutes, and seeing 2 other tables being treated similarly, we left. This place and location is so pretty it is a shame they don't know how to run the place."

  • "We try this place every year. We made a reservation a week before. We were told we could not sit in the open room over the water, as we had to make a special request. We sat by ourselves near the bar. Yet throughout our dinner a table for two was empty in that room. No one served us until someone, who was not part of the wait staff, came over for drinks. And brought the wrong drink. We did finally get a waitress who was excellent. The rice served for both our dinners was bland and not cooked properly. As we left, a group in front of us waiting for their car said they never got served and left after an hour. This happened to us a previous summer. This place can't seem to make things work. The name may change but the place is the same."

  • "While visiting Ocean City we went to this restaurant for dinner after seeing it on line. It appeared to be significantly better online. Everything was "ok" ...nothing special. I was disappointed that the place was not more upscale. This would be a good place if you are just looking for very casual dining."

  • "My fiance and I had dinner here for our anniversary. He had the 10oz ribeye steak and I had the blackened salmon. Both were big in size. Although he loved his side dishes, I was disappointed with the risotto as it was bland but loved the mixed vegetables. I highly recommend to eat outdoors as there's a great view of the bay and the bridge."

  • "Went for Restaurant week and with only 2 selections for apps and for entrees on the menu you would think the food would be spectacular - it wasn't. The onion soup had undercooked onions leaving it tasteless, the chicken was dry in the center, the steak was good. The dessert was crème brulee and tasted like propane - too much flaming. The restaurant itself has a fabulous view; it is a shame the food doesn't equal the view. It also has a great wine list with odd but very good wines that are reasonably priced. But food rules and here it didn't."

  • "We have dined here several times and have been happy with food and service. I assume, because it's off season, we were the only couple in the restaurant, but surprisingly the service was VERY slow. We'll try again, but this night was disappointing!"

  • "We had a great dinner. The special was a halibut with a pomegranate sauce, and one of the best fish entrees I have had anywhere. The desserts were delicious as well. My only criticism is that the wine list was a little weak. A French option by the glass would have been nice."

  • "Had dinner with a group of 7 on a Saturday evening. Restaurant has free valet parking or you can try to find a spot on the street. We chose valet which was fine. Restaurant was not too crowded, has an indoor and outdoor dining area and indoor and outdoor bars. Appetizers and salads were very good. I had the beet salad which was delish. The tuna nachos were also great. Dinner selections were good but not great. The Kobe burger was probably the best deal. When we go back (and we will) we will probably just get salads and appetizers for our meal. The wine list was very impressive."

  • "Very unpleasant experience, worst dinner this year! Will NEVER go back. The drinks were weak and overpriced with a $2.00 extra charge. The portions were so small with no bread or vegetables and the risotto was like gum, sticky and horrible. The bar crowd were low class, poorly dressed, rude and obnoxious. The DJ was even worse - we asked the waiter to have her lower the sound as you could not even talk over the loud music - she lowered it for a minute then made it even louder. This place is a real rip-off."

  • "We visited 800 Bay 2 years ago and while the service was a little slow, the food was very good. Last year we switched to Baia, a restaurant right near 800 Bay which was a little pricier but also had very good food. Unfortunately we will now be going to Baia when we are in the area as this year our 800 Bay dinner was unbelievably slow. The food was good but not good enough to get us to go back. The restaurant was almost completely empty, maybe 8 tables at the most. The waiters seemed to be constantly running around and were quite attentive but when it takes over an hour for appetizers (many of which were simply soups or salads), it's time to look elsewhere."

  • "Our waiter was good, that's it. Took 2 1/2 hours to get entree and most was in edible and sent back. Manager said he'd send more wine over during the long wait and never did. Had to argue with same manager over what needed to be removed from the bill since we couldn't even eat it. Manager has no customer service skills whatsoever . As we were leaving, another customer was complaining that they had been waiting for 3 hours for their food and they were fed up. DON'T GO !!!"

  • "The view of the marina and Ocean City are lovely from the terrace room. Jason, our server, was warm and friendly. I really feel sorry for him, because the view and the service were the high points of the evening. The oysters weren't bad except for the jarred Teriyaki and cocktail sauce. The salads were just okay. One of the entrees was edible. My grouper in lemon butter sauce was simply gross and took almost an hour and a half to arrive. The only good part of the meal was the bread pudding and the surprisingly good funnel cake fries. We won't be going back until it is a completely different owner, manager, menu and kitchen staff. We feel really bad for the hostesses, bartenders and servers. They have to take the heat for lousy food."

  • "The restaurant is in "transition". Started off ok, had a drink and appetizers, we were finishing the appetizer, the entre was delivered. Tried to get some wine with dinner, our waitress disappeared. Asked multiple times for the table to be cleared, finally put dishes on the adjacent table. Ordered coffee, after about 20 minutes, received but only like warm. After another 15 minutes, never got my cup of decaf, they could not figure out how to get the "machine working" according. We finally gave up, skipped dessert, ask for the check (which took 15 minutes to get). Talked to the manager, he stated that he was a restaurant consultant and had been there for 3 days. Received a gift certificate for future use...took over 30 minutes to get."
