Diner Reviews
  • "This is a great location just west of Lucas Oil Stadium with free adjacent parking, which is hard to find this close to downtown. The food is good with a varied menu. "

  • "It's good to have an option to go to other than the mall. In walking distance, food is always good and service is friendly."

  • "We had dinner and drinks with family. All 30 something's and enjoyed the service our waitress was fantastic and knew her beers well. Food was good and we enjoyed the environment"

  • "We held our book club here on a Friday night. It was a great spot, as the noise level was low enough we could discuss our book, we could all park right out front, the food & beverages were great, and our server was prompt (and friendly and had good recommendations!) Overall, I would definitely recommend enjoying an evening out at Tavern on South!"

  • "We were seated upstairs. Very quite, quick service. My hubby and I had the bison burger with fries. It was a little dry. I noticed outside balcony was available but too cold for us to request this. Plan to go back in summer to try it. Sever was very nice and food was delivered in a timely manner."

  • "Pretty uneventful. Food was decent but missed old menu. Server was not helpful or friendly. We asked for suggestions. She had none.Just really seemed like she was in a bad mood."

  • "Grilled tilapia was very good. Others in our party had salads that looked fresh with generous portions. It was very noisy which made hearing conversations very difficult."

  • "had a great dinner with friends and our server was so good, recognized when we were engrossed in conversation and did not try and rush us. great food, ambiance and service!"

  • "A nice array of food options even for those of us who are gluten intolerant. The food was "clean" and very pleasing to the palate, however, I did leave somewhat hungry. The portions were rather small."

  • "The food was very good, entree portions a bit small. Salads were a great size. Our server was very attentive, but respectful of our needs. For some reason,we were the only couple seated in the dining area. I guess we should have appreciated that, since it was Valentine's Day!"

  • "Dined with 3 friends on a Friday night. We loved the building, decor, ambience of this old building. Food and service was good; nothing spectacular but good. However prices are way too high for what you get. We ordered 4 entrees and two appetizers but were all still hungry when we left and none of the 4 of us are big eaters! Highlight of the evening was probably the appetizer pizza. Bill for the 4 of us was $100 and we weren't even drinking (2 soft drinks, 2 waters). Disappointing."

  • "I was surprised by my recent experience, considering I have previously dined at this restaurant before with no incidents. The service was slow and not to the expected standards for this type of restaurant."

  • "They have one of the better Gluten Free menu's in the city. My daughter has Celiac so Gluten Free is not a whim, it's essential and she was overwhelmed with the choices. The food was very good and we'll be back."

  • "This is an outstanding restaurant with great steaks and fish entrees."

  • "My husband & I dined at Tavern South for Valentine's Day. He had the prime rib, which he noted as very delicious, and I had the mahi mahi, which I found to be very moist and very delicious. The food was seasoned with a nice complimentary season and the sides accompanied the meal nicely. We sat in the bar area and we arrived at 5:30. The restaurant has a nice ambience. Free parking! I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "Tavern on South is great for lunch meetings and group gatherings. The atmosphere is relaxed yet on the more upscale side, which is great for meetings or group outings. The food is always great and it's one of those few places you'll be enticed to try new things when you go back. They also have a pretty good offerings of wines and beers."

  • "Sadly, we did not have a great experience at Tavern on South. We are blaming the issues on it being a Friday night during Devour Downtown but I won't be giving the restaurant a second chance for a while. We felt very rushed with the main dishes coming out when we were only half way done with our salads. Then the filet was over cooked and had no taste. The potatoes were terrible. Luckily, the tuna tasted great but the stir-fry underneath tasted like it came out of a frozen bag. The bread was great.."

  • "This is the second time we have eaten at Tavern on South and we have had a good experience both times. The food is interesting and well prepared. The service was quick. There are original cocktails from the bar."

  • "The hostess was very nice both when we arrived and when we left. Our service was better than usual--friendly and attentive. We had a table near the windows, so there was less noise and traffic nearby, which I appreciated. This is a good location for meeting friends who work downtown when you come from south of Indianapolis, which I do. The Devour Downtown menu was varied, and we both liked our dinners (tilapia and surf/turf) EXCEPT for the "cheesecake," which was nothing more than an airy mousse with flavorings. Do NOT choose this caramel "cheesecake" for Devour or if it stays on the menu afterward."

  • "Upon a warm welcome upon entering from the owner, I knew my "guests" would be returning to Tavern again after their first visit. My husband and I have eaten numerous times, but we invited six friends to join us for dinner who had never eaten there. The meal was perfection for all. Six of us ordered off the Devour menu and the other couple ordered off the regular menu. None were disappointed! I appreciate local and seasonal food choices and the ever changing menu. Choice, service, preparation, and presentation all rocked. Thanks for a lovely evening!"

  • "Great item! Enjoyed the BBQ chicken, too!!! LOVE the food, the service was fabulous, and it's fast enough for lunch. Great neighborhood gem in downtown area."

  • "Recently dined with family of four. Ordered an appetizer that didn't arrive until salads were served. Salads were described far better than they tasted. Didn't necessarily have to wait long for our entrees, but judging by the fact that every meal was barely warm, the were waiting on the server. Wife ordered talipia, normally a very mild fish... was very fishy tasting. The cheesecake, while described as not firm like a New York style, was merely cheesecake flavored mousse."

  • "I am not a fan of tenderloins. However, these were amazing. The lunch entree comes with 2 sliders which is plenty of food especially with a side dish (included in the lunch price). The tenderloins were lightly breaded but crispy. The batter = amazing! They are served on a small pretzel bun which is not big/bulky like others I have had. There are thinly sliced pickle & red onion with an awesome mayo-mustard sauce (I also hate mayo but this was a great compliment to the other falvors. And last, a piece of green lettuce (not the nasty white part of the lettuce but actual lettuce). I had it two days ago for lunch & have wanted for EVERY meal since. I have already told my husband, mother, & friend that we need to go back. I can't wait!"

  • "It was okay. The value wasn't there, too expensive for what you get."

  • "After being seated upstairs it was 10 min before we were acknowledged & another 10 to bring us water & menus. After placing our orders, we didn't see our waitress for another 15 min to refill water or bring bread. She was in a huge hurry all night- not sure if she had tables downstairs also? If so- poor planning on mgmts part. Appetizer of red pepper hummus- just ok. We received our salads- just ok...romaine was from the heart of the lettuce so was bitter & other items sprinkled on the salad were very scant. The main dish of filet & mashed potatoes was good. Potatoes were in a circle under the filet, but were luke warm. The best part was dessert=creme brulee & pistachio cheesecake. Too bad the server put a damper on this experience."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "I had higher expectations for the Devour Downtown meals. There were a number of selections available. I ordered the beef/sea bass...but I was instead served a different dish of filet. The meat was charred and overcooked. Service as fair, but our server seemed overwhelmed. A nice place to stop by for a drink, but not so much for a meal."

  • "Food was a disappointment. Filet was tough, dry, and no flavor."

  • "My boyfriend and I went here during Devour Downtown. We each had a salad, I had the spinach and he had the tuscan. I loved my salad and would honestly go back for the salad. He didn't care too much for his. We each got the filet mignon and the potato salad, that was really dry mashed potatoes. The filet was really good, cooked really well with great flavor, but we were both very disappointed with the "potato salad." But then came dessert. I got the caramel cheesecake and he got the creme brulee. Both were FANTASTIC. Best cheesecake I've ever had. The creme brulee was really good too, but MAN the cheesecake. All in all, I would recommend this place if they were having another deal, because it was very expensive even with the deal."

  • "The food was good, service was wonderful. The on-tap beer was a good selection. They have a barrel marked with the Templeton Rye (best whiskey ever), but I didn't notice it until we were on our way out. I'll have to go back and give it a try. The staff was able to make good food and beer recommendations, and when we lost an erring, about 3 staff members helped us look for it, even pulling the table away from the wall."

  • "I love Devour Downtown and was so excited about dining at Tavern on South after reviewing the menu... until I actually got there. The food was disgusting to put it nicely. I sent my salad and entree back and should have known something wasn't quite right when they brought the food out at what for me was a restaurant world record. It took longer for the wait staff to take my drink order than for my entree to be prepared and served. Overall, the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere but I am thoroughly disappointed that I wasted $50. I wouldn't dream of recommending this place to a friend or dining there again. Signed, A Devout Devour Diner, Disappointed"

  • "Went for devour downtown after having been there a few times and always getting the bison burger, which is delicious. The food was great and I had the sea bass and beef tenderloin medallions. The duck confit chili was delicious!"

  • "We went to Tavern on South for Devour Downtown. It was our first and last visit. It was horrible. The staff was arrogant and rude, especially the little pregnant waitress! We had never been, so we had questions, she rolled her eyes with every answer, and told us we had to walk around the bar to see what the beer specials were, she wasn't going to tell us what they were. She then brought us stale croutons for a "bread basket". We told her she could take it back. We then noticed everyone around us received fresh baked roll baskets and we asked for one of those and she said no, we already had the bread basket! Very poor quality, dry meats, no sauces available, such as steak sauce. one of the pricier Devour choices, so not worth it!!"
