Everyone at the Tavern seemed to know it was his birthday and we were seated at a wonderful (comfortable!) table. It is a big improvement over the old Lark Creek Inn, which was overpriced and over pretentious. The new place is informal, reasonably priced, has good food, is great for kids, and definitely has joined our "we'll go again" list. My wife had a very good burger, and I thoroughly enjoyed my short ribs. The short ribs were better than the ones I had at the much more pretentious El Paseo in Mill Valley. Free valet parking was an unexpected plus. The on tap wines were a bit disappointing and a bit overpriced, but I applaud their effort to have some modestly priced wines available. The restaurant, a converted 19th century home, sits in a grove of soaring redwoods which provide a soothing cool on a warm afternoon.
We sat outside and started with mac n'cheese croquettes, smoked trout salad, asparagus salad and a Caesar which the chef kindly split on 2 plates. Warm Parker House rolls and soft butter came a few minutes before salads, giving us a nibble with an Aviation and nice Merry Edwards sauvignon. Lamb chops, steak frites and NY steak were our entrees and a gooey chocolate cake and butterscotch pudding completed a fine meal. The atmosphere is beautiful. The food was really good and the service was great. We thought that the prices were really reasonable for such a special place. The benedicts were priced at $14 to $16 which is only a couple dollars more than you would pay at any low key neighborhood place with nowhere near the atmosphere of this beautiful restaurant. Our party was my husband and I (both in our 50's), my 88 year old aunt and our 15 year old daughter. Both my daughter and I have numerous food intolerances including gluten, dairy, soy and egg. They did a wonderful job of providing food that made all of us happy. I wished we lived closer so we could go regularly.
We started our dinner at 5:30 and it was nice and quiet. The hostess was smiling, friendly, and welcoming. Our table was ready. The room was warm and pleasant. The food was very good. The service team was friendly, helpful, and caring. They made it seem like they really wanted us to have a good meal.
