Diner Reviews
  • "This was my second visit to restaurant and I enjoyed the food as much as the first time. Had 4 "shareable" dishes with my friend and we both enjoyed all of them. The salad we had with heirloom tomatoes was a bit disappointing as I found it a bit too bitter for my taste and slim on tomatoes and lacking much flavour in dressing but otherwise highly recommend the KFC, Meatballs stuffed with mozzarella and my fave was the lobster roll. Fantastic and don't share with your friend like I did!"

  • "I was hosting an out-of-town business guest for dinner with my colleague and the waiter ignored me when asking if anyone wanted anything other than water until I "raised my hand" and spoke up as he was about to walk away. My other two colleagues were also asked how they enjoyed their meals while I was ignored. I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that I am female and my two colleagues are male. The service improved slightly by the end of the night as I was asked if I wanted another drink; however, by then I felt thoroughly diminished. I dine at many fine restaurants for both business and pleasure across North America and this is the first time that I have been singled out and treated this way."

  • "This restaurant had a great ambiance! The service was excellent and the food was even better! The Burrata, K.F.C, the Charcuterie Plate and the Mac n' Cheese were all amazing!"

  • "I definitely recommend this restaurant, the presentation of the food was amazing. Great food, great service. The waitress was very helpful and the Korean Fried Cauliflower was delicious!"

  • "The actual restaurant, itself, was absolutely beautiful; beautifully decorated with a lovely patio! I normally don't write reviews but I feel as though this place has potential so I'd like to help. Maybe our server was new, but the service was unbelievably slow on her behalf. We sat for an hour before everyone had a drink, and there were only 7 of us. We also wanted to order food but, since our server took so long with the drink orders, we didn't have time to all order food. We were also shocked at the 18% added gratuity ... that's a lot for an assumed gratuity, especially when the service was so very poor. As well, the receipt quoted a 15% added gratuity, but all of our receipts showed 18%. Very poor service for a very high price."

  • "Need I say more? Put these on your bucket list. They are a must try. I expected to enjoy the sweet/salty combo but when the donuts arrived warm as well, that just put them over-the-top good. Oh yes, the restaurant is not half bad neither. From the atmosphere to the food to the service, everything was top-notched. Give Tavern 1903 a try, you will not be disappointed."

  • "A new restaurant in the former Alberta Hotel on Jasper, Tavern 1903 provides a great eating experience in an attractive period setting - right down to the toilet fixtures that may be from the original hotel. The food and service were very good and the prices were fair. We'll be back!"

  • "Food was excellent, service was excellent. I prebooked a table the day before for a group of 10. Although the table was cozy and everyone could see each other to talk, we did sit on uncomfortable stools and we were located right by the front door which was kind of awkward (lots of traffic by our table). Atmosphere/interior decor was very warm, rich and inviting. I would go back with a smaller group. Prices are definately higher than what I would normally would want to pay for a lunch! Over all the eating was great!"

  • "This was my second visit and I was not disappointed, great service and delicious food! My son and I ordered the short ribs and they were so tender and the sauce was perfect! The KFC cauliflower appetizer is a favorite too - such a great sauce! I highly recommend this place for a wonderful ambience and exceptionally good food!"

  • "Took my older son here for his 34th birthday. He lives in Vancouver (nuff said). I thought he might be critical but he thoroughly enjoyed the meal saying it was the equal of the finer Vancouver restaurants. The menu is adventurous and flavourful. Especially enjoyed the short rib (large and succulent) with the excellent truffle fries and the grilled pork chops were indeed jacked! The corn bread side order was moist with the bacon butter adding the requisite amount of salt and complementary flavour. The bone marrow appetizer was well presented but expensive for just two half bones. Service was fast and friendly. Sat in the modern section at left but think the classic dining area to the right has better ambience."

  • "This was my second opportunity to have dinner here. We had friends in town from Montreal, and wanted to take them for a real 'Edmonton-does-food' experience. Tavern 1903 didn't disappoint. Great table on the patio, excellent service, and fantastic food. Thanks - we'll be here again!"

  • "Requested gluten free beef short ribs. They arrived with no sauce whatsoever: very dry! Surely the chef has an alternative for celiacs. This would never have happened at Normand's. Maybe the chef should ask Normand how to make a few gluten free sauces. I am not being sarcastic but the other fine restaurants in Edmonton would not have allowed this. Therefore, I will not recommend this restaurant for celiacs. However, the other 2 members of our group enjoyed their meals very much."

  • "The caesar salad is one of the best ever. The braised beef - just wonderful. Don't bother with desserts though."

  • "Went here for my birthday as a new place to try, and was more than pleased!! Me and a friend shared a couple of appetizers. The KFC and the buffalo mozzarella bruschetta. The KFC was amazing! I would've ordered 2! Haha the bruschetta was good too, but the mozzarella that came on it was WAYYY to thick.. I thought it was an egg.. Seriously. They could cut it in 1/3 and it would be way more enjoyable. But good otherwise. My friend had the salmon and said it was amazing, I had lemon garlic chicken and it was really good as well. The service was OK. Our waiter wasn't very personable.. Got the job done but I wasn't too impressed. Atmosphere was great, very busy and the bar seemed like a great place to meet friends for drinks. Try it!!!!"

  • "We had high hopes for Tavern 1903 but it turned out to be just ok. We had a selection of small plates which included the famous KFC, ribs, burrata, and the steak rolls. The KFC was really good. The ribs were good except my wife's rib left bone splinters in her mouth so she didn't want to try any more. The steak was tender but a little salty. The star was the burrata which is the main reason we wanted to come here because it is next to impossible to find this cheese in Edmonton. The service was not very attentive for the price of the food. Dishes were left cluttering the table and glasses were left empty at times. At least they stopped charging for water which I had read about in earlier reviews. Overall just an ok experience."

  • "Edmonton's downtown has been a bit stale for a few years. Same old regular spots still good (Madison Grill, Sorrentinos, Pazzo Pazzo, Bistro Praha to name a few) but Tavern 1903 is a welcome addition. It isn't the same old same old on the menu (try the KFC - and we don't mean chicken)! the mozza stuffed meatballs. Both wonderful starters. Great variety, great choice. Excellent service."

  • "We dine out several times each month so when I say this is the best meal I've had in a long time, it is high praise. We started with the Korean Fried Cauliflower (KFC). Who knew Cauliflower could taste this good? A Tempura batter with a sweet and spicy sauce elevated this vegetable. for the main course, I had the cedar plank salmon. It had a terrific smokey flavour and was served with grilled tomatoes, asparagus and delicious mashed potatoes. I've never had better. I finished with the liquid cheesecake. Delicious. My wife enjoyed her Caesar salad and cornbread, and loved her carrot cake. The cocktails and cappuccinos were also excellent. I'm already looking forward to the next visit."

  • "The server did not tell us his name, and continuously came back asking for our order when we were clearly still looking through menus and weren't decided and felt forced to make a rushed decision. 2 people at the table ordered the seafood bowl and both asked for NO cilantro - both ended up coming with cilantro. One drink order was wrong. The food was good overall and the server offered to have the seafood bowls remade, but that would have taken a lot of time. Non-alcoholic beverages were not being refilled and when asked for another iced tea, the server forgot. Beyond those issues, the service was awkward and uncomfortable. The server gave us a free dessert, but we still spent over $200 and did not feel it was worth it for the poor service."

  • "Dinner was delightful. Excellent choices on a varied menu. We chose the dining room and were early to start - 6:00 p.m. Service prompt/attentive and the food was very good; short ribs were a highlight as well as truffle fries! Recommended dessert was superb. This was a very good overall experience..........the restaurant was completely packed upon our departure 2 hours later - a good sign for downtown Saturday nite in summer."

  • "Two of our group had the buttermilk chicken sandwich and said it was the best lunch they have had in a long time. I had the applewood smoked salmon and did not realize it was not a fillet but it turned out okay. I had the Gem Salad last time I was there and it was awesome.Patio is noisy if there is a lot of traffic but it is Alberta so we still love to sit outside anyways. Nice chairs. Service is amazing and we all commented on it when we left. I will continue to recommend this place to my friends"

  • "We sat on the patio so the road noise was a little loud off of Jasper but aside from that I have nothing negative to say. The service, the pacing, the food, and the drinks were all delightful. 1903 is one of the top restaurants in the city and in the three times I've been there has remained consistent."

  • "The food didn't blow me away, but the menu is interesting and the service was excellent. The best dish of the night was the mozzarella sharing platter - the smoked one was my favorite. Most disappointing? Either the steak or the duck confit tacos. The steak was a bit boring and the tacos were aggressively spicy (usually I love spicy food). Cocktails were amazing! The room is gorgeous and the patio looks awesome."

  • "The Korean Fried Cauliflower (KFC) was amazing! Our table of 5 all had a really amazing meal at Tavern 1903, three people in our party had the short ribs complete with truffle parmesan fries, one person had the salmon and the fifth person tried the "pig-nic". There were no complaints from anyone. Food is terrific, lots of flavor and stood out from other downtown restaurants. The atmosphere was nice for a group, we didn't feel like we had to whisper. Great spot for dinner with friends."

  • "I do not like restaurants that are loud. Between 5 - 6:30 noise level was perfect for holding conversation. By 6:30 it was getting too loud so we left without desert. But overall the food was excellent."

  • "I had booked this restaurant after a gruelling contest prep for cbbf finals. I was excited to have a reward meal post show. These do not happen often. The service was really slow and after an exhaustive day my group and I were going to leave before our mains came. It took them an hour to get us our mains. Not pleased. However, the food is good. But would not plan on going again soon."

  • "We like this restaurant but I found that there isn't enough vegatarian options The cedar plant salmon was too smokey to our liking and the chicken was dry. The starters were very good. Also the grilled tomatoes with the fish were not rope enough so they had very little flavor Also. It took too long between our appetizers to get our mains."

  • "This is one of our favourite new places to dine! The food is amazing and love the history of the architecture! I suggest the pig-nic or the ribs; my meal has been cooked perfectly every time. The jack Daniels chocolate cake is a must for anyone that loves chocolate. Enjoy!"

  • "My wife and I had our anniversary dinner at Tavern 1903, I would definitely go back and would highly recommend to anyone who asks. We started off with the "KFC" the Korean Fried Cauliflower, from the crisp coating to the flavour explosion of the sauce. UNBELIEVABLE. My wife then ordered the cedar plank salmon, and I ordered the Braised short ribs. I can't say enough how enjoyable both meals were, the fish had a nice sear and a subtle flavour of the cedar smoke. The short ribs melted in your mouth and had a very nice flavour sauce. Amazing dinner, can't wait to go back."

  • "Sat on the patio on a very hot, sunny day under the umbrellas and the best pork belly sandwich for lunch, ever..."
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "We sat on the patio in a nicely shaded spot, comfortably out of the hot sun, but still able to enjoy the beautiful day. It's a bit noisy being on Jasper Avenue, but tolerable. Not recommended for a quiet romantic two-some though. Food was great--including gluten free options. Loved the truffle fries--I could smell them and couldn't resist. My salad was more like a Caesar salad than I expected with a similar creamy dressing and romaine hearts. The bacon is de-lish! All this is sounding very high fat and unhealthy but there were better options for a stricter healthier diet, though not many. Service was pleasant. Wine by the glass was good and well-priced. I had a NZ Sauvignon Blanc, a perfect option for hot summer days."
