Diner Reviews
  • "Me and my wife go here whenever we want to treat ourselves to one of the best meals in Richmond andf at a very fair price. We've never had a bad meal there and have been going for about five years. Don't go there if you're in a big rush because you're going to be there for 45-90 minutes but it's worth the wait. This place is tucked away in a nice neighborhood called "Bellevue". Make a reservation because they have become very popular with the natives."

  • "The 3 course prix fixe dinner offered every Tues thru Thursday is the best deal in town. Plus, we had a Killer Red Syrah for $15. The Sofrito Shrimp entrée was very tasty."

  • "A lovely spot tucked away in a cute little Richmond neighborhood. The cocktails are hand-crafted and less than most other places in town for the quality. Delicious fresh fish and shrimp."

  • "The food has been excellent both times we have been there. The servers are not the warmest but do a good job. The kitchen is slow, over a half hour between appetizer and entree, but once the food arrives you forget about the delay."

  • "the service and ambiance was really nice. the food had wonderful flavor but it was not too hot, kind of luke warm. They were hospitable enough to bring us hot potatoes. but the coffee and some of the other food on the plate could have been warmer. overall we would go back and try again since the flavors were so good."

  • "Quality was down noticeably. Slow service, dishes came out late and overcooked. Appetizers were good, but not as strong as usual. Might have just been an off night, but it was not up to the usual."

  • "Tastebuds is our go-to when we are looking to have some great food and tasty cocktails with friends. The atmosphere is not stuffy (love that!) -- the wait staff and owners, Valentina and Andrew, are always so welcoming."

  • "The regular menu is mostly comfort food. Specials are more creative. Definitely try dessert."

  • "We are "Tastebuds" regulars and were enticed by their Valentine's Day prix fixe menu ($75 per couple, appetizer, salad, entree, desert) knowing it would be good. We were not disappointed. On a brief lull in terrible snowy weather, the restaurant was deservedly, full and humming. We have eaten at far more expensive locations with grander culinary pretensions but none delivers like Tastebuds for the sheer quality and creativity of their food, the warmth of welcome and attentiveness of service. Their cocktails are always superb and their wines well selected. The owners work hard to get it right in the kitchen and "out front". They have truly earned their success. Get on their mailing list."

  • "Dined again after a long time because of added vegetarian options. Food was excellent!"

  • "I'm a "regular" at Tastebuds - it the best in our neighborhood (Bellevue) in the Northside for dinner ( or take out), but it has been discovered and is actually the best bistro in town. Brought a friend from DC for a celebration who is a gourmet cook and foodie - he LOVED his meal and dessert (glad the crepes are finally served warm). My neighbor and I had delicious salmon prix fixe dinner. Our regular, long-time waiter is such a great guy. We'll be back"

  • "Located on a quiet neighborhood street, Tastebuds is a real find. The menu is inventive with a little something for everyone; changes seasonally. You should make a reservation because the restaurant fills up fast. Not a place for children, which is part of its appeal to me. Great, attentive service."

  • "Great dinner--so many inventive dishes. I wanted to order almost everything. Settled for the short rib ragout which was delicious. The tapenade with goat cheese appetizer was wonderful, and plenty for all four of us to sample."

  • "Owners are always on site and seem to really want to provide quality food. Very nice staff and great food! The Tuscan bean salad is amazing!"

  • "The waite staff was friendly and very accommodating. The salmon portion was a good size and cooked to perfection. The shrimp & steak was seasoned just right and tendor. The mixed drink and wine portions were notably on the low end...if they stick to that portion size, they should use smaller glasses. Perfect music selections and volume. Do plan on returning."

  • "When we want to get out, we usually find another couple and go to dinner. We like to try new restaurants, but sometimes just want to have a quiet evening at a place where we know we won't be disappointed- good food and service. Tastebuds is that place! They recently updated their menu and we were as pleased with the new choices as we were with the previous ones. Where else in Richmond can you get consistently great service, creative and well-prepared food ,and salad, entree, and dessert for $ 22? (You have to go during the week to get this prefix price, but you get a choice of any entree except the special!)"

  • "We enjoyed our meal - the service was excellent and the food was very good. The only problem I have with the food is that all the entrée choices were very elaborate with lots of very trendy ingredients, like faro and almond butter on the fish. A few simple entrees for those who are not so adventurous would be a nice addition. My husband is one of those cautious eaters and he struggled with finding something he could live with - but he still had to asked them to leave things off the plate."

  • "The menu has changed since we were there last. Very much enjoyed the Lamb Bolognese and the samples I had of the Salmon and Sirloin. The flavor profiles were deep; The portions were perfect. Our table did get a chuckle watching folks react to the Parsnip mash as they confused it for mashed potatoes. It was far from it flavor-wise and I found my self wondering if I could have their portions?! I was sad to see the Sazerac left the cocktail menu but the Bistro Soother was our alternate choice for an after dinner drink. For those of you who don't normally drink brandy this is a nice gateway drink. Sweet and filled with orange flavors, the oft harsh elements of brandy go unnoticed. A must try!"

  • "We have simply not found a restaurant that consistently gets it so right. We went midweek confident in Tastebuds' superb food, service and value. The place was humming, Their prix fixe menu ($22) offered choice of any entree on the menu, with salad and desert. Nowhere produces such quality and choice so consistently and so modestly. I started with a spinach salad with sweet onion and goat cheese. My wife had caesar salad, Both were beautifully fresh and dressed. My entree was lamb Bolognaise and my wife had "mixed grill" (steak and shrimp) priced at $17 (!) on the regular menu. Add pumpkin mousse crepe and ginger bread pudding desert with two excellent cocktails and a glass of good wine: $82 plus tip. Unbeatable!"

  • "We have never been disappointed with our meals at Tastebuds. The food and presentation are superb. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. We have gone there for our anniversary because we enjoy the food so much but it isn't fancy and a bit noisy when full. It's also excellent value for money."

  • "Food was good, wine list limited ok. I like that they had good control of their food sources. All fresh sea food. Waiter seemed like he did this as a second job and maybe wasnt excited as we were to be there. Would go again."

  • "Every bit of food at Tastebuds American Bistro is SO GOOD! My appetizer was a butternut squash crepe and it was absolutely delicious. The main course of grouper was excellent with just enough sauce to enhance and not smother and the potato cake that accompanied it was even better. And the desserts there are always a treat - save room for dessert! The four of us split the pumpkin cheescake, the ginger pear bread pudding and the intense chocolate option. All were outstanding. We love Tastebuds American Bistro - it consistently serves some of the best food Richmond has to offer!"

  • "I'm practically a regular ... and for good reason. This is one of those restaurants where you can always rely on every aspect -- being greeted when you come in, the food (which routinely offers new additions to the menu, the wait staff, ambiance -- to be consistently good."

  • "I took a group of 8 there for an after meeting dinner. Taste buds is not very large but with reservations, it really didn't matter. The service staff was very friendly but I thought a bit slow with the drinks and follow-up service. There were enough choices on the menu to please everyone as well as a prix fixe section that was a good value. Don't expect to get any fancy cocktails from the bar. The wine list wasn't extensive but OK. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal as did the others in the group. A very nice place to have an uncomplicated meal."

  • "We really enjoyed our first dining experience at Tastebuds American Bistro. The food and service were excellent, and the prix fixe menu is a real bargain. We will definitely go back and take our friends with us. The only problem I had was deciding what to pick from the menu, because all of the options looked so appealing."

  • "Could be friendlier & pay more attention to special requests. I recently took my husband here for his bday & had a special request in my reservation for the occasion. I don't think the wait staff even looked at the reservation & we're not aware of the request. The service was disappointing & we did complain. It's too, bad b/c it was not very busy & could have been a much better experience. The food is wonderful & it's a cozy, charming spot - one of our favorites."

  • "There is a new chef at Tastebuds and the menu has had some subtle changes but the end result is still an outstanding dining experience. There are almost too many wonderful offerings to choose from. Our party of 3 had seafood (salmon) pork tenderloin and sirloin. Each of us thought our individual dish was outstanding. I chose from the prix fixe offerings ($22 for appetizer, entree and dessert). Tastebuds remains one of our favorite restaurants."

  • "Tastebuds is a go-to place for me when I think of special occasion or just treating myself. Everything is just right...the size, the service, reasonably priced food which is always outstanding and beautifully presented, good wine selection."

  • "So great to find a comfortable, unpretentious place with absolutely top-notch food, experienced staff and reasonable prices. Starting at the bar, they have some inventive cocktails actually featuring alcohol instead of sugar, and we always try the evening's drink special. The small plates and entrees change a bit, making the best of each season and always offering a new experience. Great combinations of ingredients, herbs and spices bring out the best in each entrée. We’ve never been disappointed with our selections. It is off the beaten path, and absolutely worth the detour to enjoy fine food in a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere."

  • "Taste buds American Bistro was a great choice for Richmond Restaurant Week. A little drive from Chesterfield County to the north side of Richmond, but worth it! I had the Pecan and Bacon Stuffed Shrimp with yellow pepper coulis on a cheddar cheese grits cake. Oh, so tastey! The caramel apple bread pudding with whiskey sauce topped the meal off. I am so glad I found this new treasure! I will be back."

  • "Last minute late night choice for Restaurnat Week. Started with fabulous Goat cheese flan with yellow beets, figs and olives. Husband chose the polenta stuffed with sausage which was a little bland. He tasted the flan and wished he had chose that instead. Our server was amazing and switched it out for the flan. Steak sirlion was perfectly medium rare and tender. The salmon with lemon butter sauce was tasty. Dessert was chocolate cherry ricotta pound cake and the pumpkin mousse crepe. The pound cake was on the heavy side but had great flavor and amazing chocolate sauce. The mousse was light and very pumpkin-y and had a yummy caramel sauce. Outstanding service."

  • "We tried this place out for restaurant week. Neighborhood restaurant, hip vibe, local artwork, good beer selection, competent service - that's the good news. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. Between our our group, we tried almost everything on the limited menu. Everything I tasted was under seasoned. What sounded interesting on the menu ended up as different components on the plate. The flan appetizer with beets and olives was a small flan next to a pile of beets next to a pile of olives. My dining partner had salmon with tomato sauce - nothing cooked poorly but flavors did not work together. I suppose if you live in the neighborhood and need a place to eat with low expectations, this place fits the bill."
