The restaurant looks beautiful and the food was great! It seems like this would be a wonderful choice if you wanted to share an appetizer with a friend and enjoy some music. We were there pretty early. The restaurant opens at 4pm and not the hours listed on this website. It took ridiculously long to get our outrageously priced meals. The soup was the best I have ever known. I was very disappointed that the performer scheduled to play that night was not there. They had a little dance floor in front of the band area that seems to make for a good night out, if they actually have musicians. All things considered, I really do appreciate seeing an upscale type of restaurant in that part of town. A few changes and I know this place will last.

On our way to Taste(which was more than 1 hour from our home) I received a phone call informing me they did not open until 4:00pm. Our reservation was 2:00 pm. We were more than halt way there. I cannot honestly comment since I was never there. Disappointing.

The band was fantastic!! Our food was great . The service was the only disappointment, I had my drink spilled on me by our waitress while me & my wife were enjoying the music & each other on our 1 yr anniversity. This is where I purposed to my wife at, but this was a disaster.

  • Good eats for North Dayton

I am a native Daytonian and, sadly, North Dayton has been on the decline for decades. However, I was pleasantly surprised that there existed a good, "non-chain" restaurant. Taste is an upscale soul-food, southern cuisine experience. I had the Creole Catfish which was well-seasoned, greens, and mac and cheese. The presentation was good and the taste was satisfying. I currently live in the Washington, DC area. So, by comparison, this was not an exceptional experience. But, while in Dayton, I recommend Taste because it is a change from the chain restaurants that have taken over Miller Lane and south of town.

Heard mixed reviews about food and service. Our experience Friday 2/28/14 was memorable! We had a great time. The food was unique and very good. The service was excellent!! There was a band from Cincinatti (NP) playing that was very good. Music was a little louder than vocals but it could of been our placement/seating (we sat behind stage area). The menu prices were (beverages, appetizers, entrees) were very reasonable for the quality of the goods. It was a warm, friendly community environment. There isn't anything like the Taste experience in this community and we welcome it here. We look forward to our next experience and the many more to come!!!

This is a restaurant in Dayton?! That was my first reaction. What a beautiful place, first of all, with nice little hideaways for a romantic night. They had a jazz trio the night we were there and that was the cherry on top of great service by all (our waitress as well as the bartender and others who brought our drinks directly to our table). And the food. So mouth watering. Nice sized portions, so flavorful and original. We couldn't get enough. We had drinks, appetizers, soup, main course, coffee and dessert -- all for less than what we'd have paid at a chain restaurant. A dining experience to remember. We'll return (often!).

My wife and I hosted a friend and his wife over the holiday break. It was 2pm on a Saturday afternoon. Clean, sharp, and impressive on the inside. We were the only patrons in the restaurant at that time. Waiter was very professional. It was impressive how he took all of our orders without writing any of it down - but we changed our minds about that when he had to come back and confirm portions of our order. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time; although, my friend that traveled from California and came to the Taste on my recommendation, got his food 10 minutes after us - and didn't like it. My macaroni and cheese was very hard like it was microwaved in the bowl. All waiter offered was more mac & cheese. He seemed indifferent.

I was in the area for the weekend and found Taste on the internet and decided to give it a try. The food was great especially the collard green rolls. Drinks were good not watered down. The ambience is causual/upscale jazz club. The musicians were great singing all of my favorite R&B slow groves from the Isley Brothers- Jill Scott. We had a great time. My only issue was they did not have mashed potatoes which I think to run out of mashed potatoes an hour into the dinner hours is odd. They made a substitution of sweet potatoes without asking me but it worked out. They could do with a quick lesson in customer service but they were all pleasent and I would reccommend this restaurant.

Our first visit to Taste in late August amazing ..this time NOT. We were seated at a table about 6 feet from the band who had several amplifiers, drums, base and sax and spent the entire evening screaming at each other trying to have a conversation. The service was absolutely abominable. We waited almost 30 minutes for the appetizers. We had to ask three times for silverware and plates even though our appetizers had been served and sitting in front of us. All four of us had a different entree and all four were just plain bad -- greasy, burnt, cold. The ONLY bright spot was Aaron, who was NOT even our server, jumped in and got us silverware, water, & drinks and straightened out a true mess with one of our meals. We won't be back...

Taste impressed us as a place devoted to upscale members of our African-American community. As they filled up on a Friday, I saw only about four white people, including us. I'm not fond of segregation, maybe the rest of Dayton needs to get to know this place; we were well-served and the food was fine. Taste changes during the day, from lunch to happy hour to dinner to jazz club, with a different menu for each. We had none of those, but rather the Restaurant Week specials. Calabrian crab chili was addictive but I felt the crab was lost in it. The chicken carbonara pleased my wife, and I thought the lamb chops were rave-worthy; big portion in a peppery brown gravy. The Cajun theme of the food is not too aggressive. We'll be back!

    Dined on 6/14/2013
This is a nice addition to North Dayton where there are so many chain restaurants. The food was very good. We had the Taste parmesan fries and they were delicious. I had the creole catfish which came with collard greens and macaroni cheese. It was very tasty and there was a lot of it. My husband had the short ribs. The ribs were good, but disappointed that it said that it came with yams and root vegetables and I think that there was one yam and one carrot. The service was very slow. It was not busy and our glasses were left empty for long periods of time. It took a long time to get our food as well. Overall it was okay and I would probably give it a second chance.

The Taste has a automatic reserve your table link on its website. I had wanted to surprise my friend and have all her girlfriends meet there for a causal Sunday afternoon brunch/birthday party. I went and reserved the table as requested the, portal gave me their suggested time based off of the party number and the reservation was confirmed. When arriving at 1:45 pm to the restaurant I immediately notice that there was not a single car at the restaurant. Just to be sure I didn't miss anything I double checked the time on the doors that stated the restaurant would be open from 1 to 4pm. Again there was no one there. So the surprise was ruined and we took our business else where.

My party of 4, one had an emergency and could not make it) thoroughly enjoyed the Gospel Brunch at The Taste Restaurant on Sunday, Jue 2. This was my fourth time at The Taste Restaurant and I had no complaints. The chef made the best omelet that I have ever had. Their sweet potato waffles were delicious as well. Our reservation worked out perfectly. Our table was ready and waiting and we were shown to our table immediately. I truly appreciated the Open Table reeservation. My group plans to return the first Sunday in July for the next Gospel Brunch.

I took my Mother to Taste for the Mother's Day Buffet Brunch. While the food was good (although I did not see a couple of items the restaurant had advertised); the service was spotty at best. Although we were told that our table was being set up, when we were seated we found we did not have silverware or napkins. After waiting for several minutes, I took them from an empty table in the back. Other issues occurred throughout. A 20% gratuity was added to the bill for our party of 2! I no longer live in Dayton and now live in a much more expensive city. However, I have never been automatically charged a 20% tip for a party 2; much less for a buffet where we had to get our own food!

Like many buffets it is difficult to maintain good food quality and temperature. As a result, some very tasty "warm" items. $15.95 per adult was on the high side for this quality meal but the shocker was the auto 20% service charge (not listed as tip) for the meal. When the bill comes, there is still a spot to give a tip. We saw our server twice, once for drink order and then we caught him to give us the check. The waiter should have indicated clearly that the tip was included but "why?"this is a great deal for him. How many people would simply add 15% onto the bill and not even notice it? I almost did. I want to try this restaurant again but don't feel I can support this deceptive pricing. When did a tip go to 20%? Shame on you!!

My husbands catfish was a smaller portion than he expected so of course he finished off my short rib. The black eyes pea soup was best I ever had. My husband doesn't like black eyed peas. The menu is a bit limited for my taste. Pastas and cream sauces, grits. I had the cajun shrimp pasta that had a heart symbol next to it signifying heart healthy. Even though it was cajun, I could detect very little spice. Also, the sauce was very creamy and I wondered why it was heart healthy. The restaurant is very nice inside and we had a good waitress who was very attentive. I was with 8 other people and I don't know how they all felt about their food. Our first time at this O.T. Find. The gumbo appetizer had a great, smoky flavor. The Taste salad had a light, flavorful dressing, complemented by sweet cornbread croutons. We enjoyed fish in a light but crunchy cornmeal coating. For dessert, we shared the sweet potato pecan pie, baked in a flaky crust. Our only disappointment was that we couldn't stay to hear the live band setting up for 8 pm.

We throughly enjoyed the experience. Food was tasty, however we really doubt that any items were heart healthy. They all seemed to be high fat and or high salt. By taste I think the gumbo probably had three days the rda of salt. The live band was also exceptional. After trying to find your place with GPS using your address, we finaly found you and entered from Salem Ave. We aren't familiar with the area since we drove in from Springfield. I hope you have real success. Tom Estep
