Diner Reviews
  • "We've eaten here several times and have liked it each time. We were there on the early side so it wasn't loud/crowded but it was definitely livening up by the time we left (there was music later, which I'm afraid we missed). The waiter was extremely nice and attentive but not annoying. Tasty food and a bumped-up atmosphere compared to a lot of places--feels like you went out for a nice dinner, not just a quick bite."

  • "The restaurant doesn't stand out much from the outside since it's tucked into a strip mall, but it's decent enough once you get inside. There was a nice "make your own bloody Mary" bar on the day that my friend and I were there, and that was a nice change from the ordinary. The brunch menu is solid -- breakfast-type items (pancakes, etc.) as well as more lunch-type items (sandwiches, shrimp & grits, etc.), and drinks are large and well-made. There was live music on the Sunday that we were there, which was a nice touch, although it made it a bit hard to hear each other. All in all, a nice experience, and we'll probably be back."

  • "We were looking for someplace new to try that would please both grown-ups and the 8-yr-old, and Taste was JUST the ticket! The food was excellent, the drinks were AMAZING, and the service was friendly and lovely. We will definitely be back soon!"

  • "Great food! New menu & look. Highly recommend checking it out!"

  • "Quite possibly the best fish dish I've ever eaten! Halibut special was amazing! Started with oysters and mussels which were delicious as well. This was our first visit to Taste, w ill definitely return!"

  • "Food is good Bar service pretty slow. Greeting takes too long when you arrive. 10 minutes just to get water. That means they are understaffed. Good local pub in general."

  • "at least for the times we have been to Taste Gastropub. Knowledgeable staff, menu always changing, drink ingredients that dare you to try something new. We have always been there for dinner and late night. I have to make it a point to get there for lunch."

  • "Went there with family and friends for a casual dinner. Service was execellent and food was very good."

  • "Had brunch here over the weekend. Though the restaurant was only 1/4 full, drinks took forever, our appetizer never arrived (we cancelled it when our brunch arrived), took twenty minutes for server to come back to tell us that one of the entrees we ordered was unavailable. We were given the wrong check at the end of our meal, and barely received a "sorry for the awful service". It is unfortunate, because the food was decent, so we may have returned in the future if service was reasonably good. There are definitely better choices in Olney than Taste."

  • "Went to hear friends band play there and found that the food was excellent. Service was excellent and the server made sure that we got what we wanted, the way we wanted it. Took back my wife's tuna steak as soon as he noticed that it escaped the kitchen more rare than she requested. Loved the food. Very fresh and well prepared. Cocktails were very good but a taste of lemon in the Mojito was ...unusual. very good otherwise. Bread pudding was AWESOME. Hopefully it will remain on the menu for our next visit."

  • "We had a very nice experience for our first time at the Gastropub. The waiter was friendly and fairly attentive. The two dishes we had were way above the usual gastropub food. The only negative was that my dish of spaghetti and crab was very spicy. There was no indication of this on the menu. When I asked the waiter about the heat he said that was not usually the case and that the cook must have put too much pepper flakes in the dish. My husband and I were on a tight schedule--we had a play to attend. Otherwise, I would have sent it back. I like spicy, but this was over the top. I would definitely return to the restaurant--just not order that dish again!!!"

  • "1st time dining at this pub as a longtime attendee of Olney Theater productions was a really pleasant experience. Was part of a group of six - so I was glad to have made a reservation ahead on a Saturday evening as the place really filled in at dinner time. Really appreciated the nice array of brews available, though a couple of items on the menu (food and beverages) were not available at the time we dined there. Limited vegetarian options may keep this off our list of places to revisit - though my wife reported the pumpkin ravioli was quite good. So improvement by management in that end could be attractive."

  • "I ordered the chicken dish, but it was more like a tapa. Extremely small portion and not very satisfying. My co-diners had to give me some of their food so I didn't leave hungry."

  • "The food is very good--no question. We had been there once before, so we knew we'd be having a good eating experience. But, we made reservations through Open Table the day before--for two at 5:30--and we were not advised that we would be seated at a high table right next to the bar (and the big-screen TV). When we were led to our table, we asked to have it changed and were told that they were completely booked. There were a lot of empty tables at that time, but I assume that those making reservations for later knew to ask for the specific kind of table/location they wanted. In fairness, the volume of the music was turned down a little at our request, and we were offered a free first round of drinks."

  • "Went with another couple on a busy Saturday night. The food was terrific from the striped bass special to the wagyu beef. Flourless chocolate cake with ice cream was unnecessary but very good too."

  • "Dinner w/ mom, son and niece on a Friday night. The food was excellent - which pleased me since I had loved Taste in its original concept. Our server was attentive early in the meal, however not so much once we were finished. I think our empty plates sat on the table for at least 10 minutes, and our water glasses were empty for too long, in my opinion. I will definitely go again, since it's in my neighborhood, and I would recommend it to a friend."

  • "They forgot to put our order in so we had a ridiculously long wait. But the staff was very apologetic and offered us a round of drinks. They ended up giving us our whole meal free, and several staff came over to say how sorry they were. The food was very good, and they have lots of good drinks."

  • "I'm scratching my head at the negative reviews that have been previously published on Open Table about "Taste." They seem to focus on less than good service and all I can conclude is that on those occasions t the place must have been understaffed or unexpectedly slammed. Since we were very early evening (pre-theater) diners, there were only a few tables occupied, and more servers than needed, so we were attended promptly and well. The food arrived quickly. The portions were ample and the preparation excellent. Great fish of the day! We will definitely return the next time we plan to be in the neighborhood."

  • "Everything I ate was delicious, including the arugula salad with roasted pumpkin, the cauliflower puree (I wish I hadn't agreed to share that), the blue crab spaghettini (though it wasn't well-described on the menu and had too much oil), and the sticky toffee bread pudding (more dry than typical bread pudding but still very tasty). Friends seemed very pleased with their dinners and drinks too. My friend's lobster risotto tasted great, and another friend's fries were very tempting. Our server was nice and knowledgeable enough, but perhaps had too many tables, as he forgot a few things until reminded and never thought to refill our water glasses until asked. I look forward to returning."

  • "Have been to Taste a number of times...this may have been their best showing. Our entrees were both very good, my wife loved the lobster risotto and I thoroughly enjoyed the pumpkin ravioli. Place was hopping, but we sat right down (7:30p res on a Sat night) and enjoyed attentive service. Overall, a great night at a "go-to" local spot. Must note that friends we ran into there, had a less memorable experience. Still, we will be back. Would recommend Taste to others!"

  • "The Sunday Family Style dinner on Feb. 9, 2014 was superb. I would do it again in a minute & bring others with me!"

  • "First off, credit where it's due, our server was apologetic and seemed genuinely disappointed in the way the kitchen handled our order. The manager seemed apologetic as well, and they did what the could to "make it right." That said, our food simply never came. After we had been at the restaurant for about an hour (and 40 minutes after we ordered), we had only had appetizers. As we were tired, they packed up our food for us. It must have been a really off night. They did have a good and extensive beer list."

  • "Been to this restaurant several times but food and service not as good as previous visits. Kitchen seemed overwhelmed and service slow. They have changed the menu somewhat moving more toward pub food. What we had was good but wait long and could have been hotter when served. Really liked this place before but this visit was a bit disappointing."

  • "Going to Taste was a last minute decision and I am glad we made it. Small plates were yummy and filling. Cheese plate had truly different tastes in the mix. Drinks from the bar were just right. Not too this and not too that. Wine selection worked out for both of us. Dinner had flavorful sauces and were seasoned properly. I will be back."

  • "this was the first time I went there. the photos online made it appear to be an upscale bar and restaurant. the reality was that it was slightly worn and average in appearance. I ordered oysters on the half shell and they were not even cut from the shell. we had three appetizers and several drinks each and the total bill was about $130. this was pretty pricey."

  • "This is the first time I'm back since the name change. I loved the old menu, staff and ambiance. Now it's just ok."

  • "Everything was okay -- just okay. Probably wouldn't make a go-to restaurant but will give it another try if in the area to see if second experience is more positive."

  • "Our previous visits always left us with the impression that this kitchen could do no wrong. Recently we experienced very tasty but actually cold (not even room temperature) soup, a more than 1/2 hr wait after the soup for scallop entrees (that were superb) accompanied by cold cauliflower puree that flowed right through the fork (no spoon provided), and tasteless roast pumpkin. Their version of sticky toffee bread pudding was seriously lacking toffee and was not really dry, but too firm and too bland. We'll be back, and hope that this was just an off night for the kitchen. Hate to think how it might be if they were busy. The waitress was extremely friendly and solicitous; she comped us one of the desserts after sensing our frustrations."

  • "We arrived at 1:00pm last Sunday. We were told that we could only order from the brunch menu. They were out of a few things on the menu. A few of us ordered the shrimp/crab salad. Portion was not very large and it was very average. The restaurant was dead. No ambience at lunch on a Sunday. I would not rush back. We were very disappointed."
    Dined on 12/22/2013
  • "There was a large group at the bar getting louder and louder. Not enough space. Started crowding the table area. Understand that it is a small establishment but two things on menu were out when we arrived at 7 or so. Then the vegetable for the special was out too after we ordered. Chef came out and offered options which was nice. But the broccoli with stems substitute was very pithy and not edible. Fish was very good -- tender, moist and lightly crusted. The air conditioning kept coming on and off and blew a cold breeze down our backs. Almost slipped coming in the restaurant door -- it was greasy and slick. Same for the sidewalk in front going out. Do not plan to go again. Nice concept, but hard to execute in the small space."

  • "We made a last minute open table reservation here last Friday night based on the reviews on line. I've actually never researched eating places before locally. But wow! I was with a couple of "old" school friends. We all loved the place. The casual atmosphere actually adds to the beauty of it. You don't have to get dressed up to have five star food. It was the best local food I've had in a very long time. Excellent choices with something for everyone."

  • "I really want to like this place, but it is always somewhat uneven. The beef tartare was a tad bland, and I would have liked it if the carrot shavings that garnished it had been pickled lightly. The burger was a tad undercooked from what I asked, and the bun was more of a brioche that fell apart. On the other hand, the pork osso buco was superb, and the mussels were excellent. The service however, was slow. It took us 10 minutes to get our drinks ordered, then it took a while for them to serve a glass of wine and a bottle of beer. It was friendly however, and they seemed to be trying hard. I think there may be some glitches getting info back and forth to the kitchen since that appears to be one of the places where the hangups occur."

  • "2nd time here. Service was poor. A lot of items on the menu and beer list were not available. Asked for a taste of a wine and they poured in a regular glass!"

  • "We usually eat a peaceful lunch at this pub, but we tried a Friday night instead. The place was hopping from families, to birthday parties to a girls night out, seemed everyone was there. Still our waiter was attentive and our food was superbly prepared and delivered at the right temperature without prolonged waiting. We'll be back!"

  • "We went early on a Sunday evening before going to Olney Theater. Other diners were doing the same. The service was the right amount of attentive and they realized that we couldn't linger. The charcuterie was excellent and I will definitely go back for more. Their fish was perfectly cooked and tasty and though I like cauliflower, there was too much to finish. Noise level was good as the bar was not particularly crowded. A good addition to Olney."
