  • Somewhat disappointed

I was somewhat disappointed. The food was not as good as it was last year. Last year the food was superb. This year it fell short--for me, anyway. I had the pumpkin gnocchi, which were very tough and chewy--way too much flour in the gnocchi. The flavor was good, but I couldn't get past the texture. My fellow diners had the hanger steak (very good) and the mussels (good). The fries were excellent. The menu changed--it's not the one on Taste's website, which also was disappointing. Ambiance was fine, service was good. The lighting was much brighter than I remembered. Overall dining experience was nice, but please bring back the old menu!!!

Starters served in about 15 minutes, in a near-empty dining room; just got starters, and hot were served, so mains cool by time we finished 1st course. Greens in salad wilted and brown, dressing tasted "off," but soup was good. Food in mains unseasoned, e.g., no fennel on tuna, very little tzasiki or Greek seasoning on gyro, no salt or pepper and none on table. When asked about seasonings lack, she did not know what was supposed to be in dishes, even tho listed on menu. Server came to take and deliver order, did not come back except for check. Server did not advise of ( high!) prices of beers ($9 for pint, $10 for small snifter), and when pints were ordered, did not advise that some beers served only in snifters, not pints. Won't be back.

Consistently good food, and fantastic small plate selection. Menu changes seasonally, wine list is consistently good, I have not sampled the beer yet, but they have a good selection. Will be trying brunch in a few weeks, was great the first time we went there a few years ago. I keep meaning to try other places in Olney, but keep going here because I will always get a good meal, served by an extremely friendly staff.

I recommend working your way through the small plates as a great way to sample a number of outstanding dishes. We had the Ahi tuna, mussels, flat bread, shrimp, lamb meatballs and meat skewers. The entrees also look great so I guess I will just have to go back and commit to one meal. If anything like the small plates, I am sure I won’t be disappointed…

First the positives: we were seated promptly, our server (Matthew) was great, food was served promptly and was very tasty. They had an excellent selection of craft beers on tap, and the wine list looked interesting. However...portion sizes were small for the price, 2 meatballs in a $10 appetizer, 3 scallops in a $20+ entrée, and the smallest hanger steak I've ever seen. We'd probably come back to sample the rotating beer selection in the bar, but I doubt I'd spend that much again for dinner when there are so many other choices.

Five of us stopped in after seeing "Colossal" at the Olney Theatre Center. Our 6-foot 6-inch waiter provided friendly and informed service. I got the cold cuts and discovered no one removed the skin from the salami and chorizo, so I found myself involuntarily flossing. The meats and cheese were tasty. My girlfriend got the salmon, which came cooked hard as she requested. Two others got the sucking pig and flat noodles, which they liked. Since several of us were driving an in the land of the mad mothers, we had little to drink. The restaurant was a little noisy due to the Redskins game on several televisions in the bar. We will keep Taste Gastropub in mind for after future Olney plays.

The food was excellent, although portions were on the skimpy side. Service was a little disappointing. Long waits in between courses, pouring of wine courses was not well coordinated with serving of food courses, wine servings were very light. Some diners were given additional wine while others were not. Overall very disappointing as we really enjoy Taste, just didn't seem like it was a well coordinated event.

The bar with TV's blaring offsets the option for intimacy in this small space. The food was delicious, but portions not generous. The scallops with pesto risotta could have stood with more of the risotto - the scallop portion was relevant to the price and perfectly prepared. Decent selection of wines by the glass. Would like to try dessert next time. The service was very efficient and a manager/owner stopped by to check on things, always a good sign. Definitely miss the small plates emphasis that existed under prior management/ownership, as this was a niche for the Olney market.

What is the justification for the downtown prices? Certainly, the rent isn't as much. The ingredients don't warrant it. And the chef is not a star, although quite creative.

The lighting is garish (I'm looking at you, overly-bright wall fixtures), the "house music" inappropriate (dance club tracks at a 7:30 dinner?) and the acoustics overly loud. The chef sources some very nice ingredients, but was off in executing their preparation. My fish was OVERDONE and my companion's chicken a bit tough. Service was .. adequate( we waited quite a while for our drinks). What is being served is American Bistro fare at almost DC prices, but the setting is the outer suburbs. I can't recommend this place for a "destination" dinner. Maybe lunch is better??

I ordered the lamb meatballs in polenta. It was absolutely delicious...all 2 small (one bite) meatballs for $10. It was served in a tiny sauce type dish, and that was it ! When the person I was having lunch with said to the waiter,, " you mean that it cost $5 for a meatball ?" The waiter said that he'd ask the chef. He returned and said, " the chef said that lamb is expensive." We were both surprised that no bread or crackers were served. I'm thankful that I could share my friend's lunch !

We went for dinner, but as it turned out, there was a progressive dinner along with Jazz combo there that night. The food was tasty, but in some cases too many flavors in one dish so that they clashed. Could have been because of the freneticism of the group dinner. Price was OK given what one got. Will try again on a less busy night.

We found Taste Gastropub from our last playbill at Olney Theatre and there were a mix of locals along with theatre goers. There was a good mix of families with young children, bar patrons, and adult theatre patrons going to Avenue Q and they mixed pretty well. The menu has a unique variety of choices from starters, raw, Cheese boards, Charcuterie and main menus makes choices very hard. The food choices we made came plentiful and attractive. The food was very good, but we felt it wasn't all that it could be. The suckling pig dish had very good, tender pork but the parpadelle were great in size and quantity and a little lacking in flavor. Shrimp and grits were very good but promoted as spicy, but were rather bland. We will try again!

Gastrotaste Pub is a nice little hang out place. Service was excellent. The menu is small, and the night we were there (it was a Thursday), they had run out of many of the menu items. This was a big disappointment since the selection was limited to start with, so I had trouble finding something that I really wanted. The food was good, but again, not necessarily what I wanted. I will give it another try, hoping that this situation was unusual, and we just caught them on a bad night.

We were so delighted with the food at Taste. We often come down from CT to visit my mother in law at Leisure World and are always confused about where to eat because everything seems so ordinary. I finally went on the web and found this place and it is the best meal I have had in weeks. Many places pretend to be "fine dining" but this place does it. I had the trout and could not believe how much I enjoyed the crispy, meaty fish with a subtle sauce and heirloom tomatoes, just the way I like it, simple but excellent. The prices were reasonable as well. Thanks folks, much appreciated. We will be back and who knows, we gave the card to my mother in law how will probably drive her friends there soon..

I guess you're supposed to drink the half priced bottle of wine for an hour while you wait for food - or maybe the chef came in late that day. It was O K - we had world cup soccer to watch - we couldn't have a conversation over the din of background music with the crowd at the bar talking over it. Later, the live music was an unexpected treat. The wait staff is terrific - the kitchen is slow. I had the "20 minute chicken" - it was tasty. the 'gazpacho' - pear and coconut milk was strangely spicy with small red peppers and horseradish - I don't know why I expected it to be sweet.

We went to Taste Gastropub to celebrate Father's Day and our daughter's 23rd birthday. We had been there many years before when it was under different ownership. We made our reservation on-line via Open Table and were seated as soon as we walked in the door. The menu has changed, but the food was excellent with many interesting choices on the menu. The service was fast and friendly - great job there! Even though Dad's meal was free, the tab was higher than we normally like to spend on a meal, but we'll still come back for special occasions. We highly recommend trying Taste Gastropub at least once to make your own assessment. Worth the trip. Happy to have gone back!

Went with fiancé for dinner and was not disappointed. She got the scallops that were very tasty and cooked to perfection. I had the suckling pig which also was very tasty. Only complaint was the amount of peas. Not a pea eater but was a little overwhelming. Our server was outstanding and very attentive. Ambiance of the place was very nice and would be a great romantic dinner place. My only big complaints was that when we arrived (8:30) we were immediately seated (which was great) but we were not told there was going to be music and we seated right were the musicians set up. If known we would've asked for a different seat. The music was not loud and was decent so it did not make for a huge issue but still would have liked the option.

The Gastropub used to be called Taste Mezze (tapas)--I'd like the old restaurant back please. Although the food quality was comparable, the service was sporadic along with being delivered cold soup and an overly long wait between courses in a half empty restaurant. Not sure why? The interior was redone and is dark and the handoff between the server and service staff needs work. eh...

Taste used t be one of our favorite restaurants in Olney. The change away from the small plate offerings was a mistake. The service on this last visit was not very good. The appetizer took 25+ minutes to arrive after we got our drinks. In addition, my wife ordered a cup of soup, which never came. The food was pretty good, but the service has definately slipped. As a result, Taste has moved down on our list of go to restaurants.

We've eaten here several times and have liked it each time. We were there on the early side so it wasn't loud/crowded but it was definitely livening up by the time we left (there was music later, which I'm afraid we missed). The waiter was extremely nice and attentive but not annoying. Tasty food and a bumped-up atmosphere compared to a lot of places--feels like you went out for a nice dinner, not just a quick bite.
