Diner Reviews
  • "We always stop here when we are in Monterey. This is a family-run bistro where you really feel welcomed, even if you're not a regular customer. The food is well prepared. The au gratin potatoes are wonderfully sinful. A woman at the next table came in just to order them! Fish is always fresh and not overcooked. For lunch we shared the calamari, a pear and greens salad, and a decadent pork sandwich with grilled onions, roasted peppers and aioli. All were delicious."

  • "We always make a point to eat here when visiting Pacific Grove. The owners are wonderful and really make us feel at home. The food is very good and very healthy. With all the choices on the peninsula, we always return here. It is very intimate and charming."

  • "Serving some of the best food on the peninsula, this is one of the greatest finds we have made since moving to the peninsula 4 years ago. The owners are active participants and always on premise. By the second visit, they recognized us and welcomed us as friends. Away from typical tourist areas, it is still very accessible, just outside of Pebble Beach in Pacific Grove on the south end of Forest. The menu is just the right size, offering something for everyone without being overwhelming. Much of the fare is done in a French fashion, with reduction sauces that are fabulous, but there are also some other contemporary selections. Several dishes specifically for kids from Penne Pasta to an Angus Cheeseburger. Also - vegetarian friendly."

  • "We went with another couple who had been there before. The service was quick enough and we never felt rushed. We had the eggplant appetizer, which was excellent. My wife had the lamb tenderloin and I had the grilled rabbit. Both were very tasty and came with a rich gravy and perfect au gratin potatoes. The portions were on the generous side, so bring your appetite. I'd recommend Taste for folks looking for a hearty home-style bistro meal."

  • "Good European-style bistro and restaurant away from the tourist crowd. Restuarant is located on Hwy 68 (Forest Ave) and Prescott, across the street from the Safeway, in Pacific Grove. Staying near the Asilomar center, we wanted a restarant nearby, about 5 min. drive away. Food was very good and well-presented. Good variety of dishes: meat, fish, poultry, pasta, that should satisfy any cravings (reasonably priced too, from high $teens to $20s for entrees). We had calamari and crab cakes for appetizers, and butternut squash pasta (agnonelli, sp?) and pork medallions for entrees. Service was pleasant and efficient. Definitely a place to come back to, and try other dishes. "

  • "There are literally hundreds of restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula but this is my favorite because the food is always interesting and well prepared, with a number of choices. The owners are always there to greet and check things with you and they really care."

  • "Came in last minute on a Saturday night. Restaurant was busy but the service was attentive and friendly. Food was excellent - from the soup to the entrees to the desserts. Would highly recommend for a great evening away from the craziness of the waterfront."

  • "We found this restaurant on Google, and our Inn recommended it to us for our date night. The ambiance of the restaurant was good, clean and appealing. The light at each table was good, and they used shades on each fixture to keep the entire restaurant from feeling bright. The food was served timely and was very well presented, tasted good and the staff was all very conscientious and accommodating. They know what's in their food, and were able to accommodate the need for no flour/no sugar. Definitely a good find for us!"

  • "We've eaten here many times before and always had a good experience. However, this time was an exception. The Calamari was rubbery and over-breaded, the salmon was underdone. It was Feb. 14, so they were busy, but still this is not the sort of meal we expected."

  • "Taste has been around for quite awhile and seems to fly under the radar, perhaps because it's a bit off the beaten track. However, every time I have eaten there, whether lunch or dinner, I have had a very positive experience. This restaurant is underrated and underappreciated. My wife and I had supper early Valentine's day evening; she had the halibut special and I had the lamb fillets. Both were excellent, the lamb better than the halibut IMHO. My only negative is that parking is very limited and one has to be creative to find nearby parking during peak time. Nevertheless, I encourage ppoeple to give it a try."

  • "Once a year or so, when we're in Monterey, we come here. Suzanne & Bill always make us feel as though we are family. I'm sure some of the many regulars believe they ARE family. The attention to detail impresses. We've never had an over-cooked fish, or a too-salty dish. Seasonings have depth & authentic flavor (the tomatoes in the soup are roasted; the vanilla in the silky creme brûlée is scraped from the pod; the lamb is always tender; the blue cheese on the salad is top-notch, etc.). The scalloped potatoes are so rich & creamy they could be a meal in themselves. They offer FOUR vegetarian entrees. Portions are generous. What's not to like? Oh, maybe the wine list isn't totally fabulous, but there are some good ones, even so."

  • "We have been dining at Taste for a number of years whenever we visit the Pacific Grove area. The food is fantastic and the service is equally as good. All the staff is very friendly and the prices are very reasonable. A hidden gem!"

  • "We've been coming to this restaurant for decades and have enjoyed the hospitality and food here. Our favorite is their lamb filets... so tender! Calamari appetizer... crispy and fresh. Our latest favorite dessert is the chocolate torte... savor each bite! Family-owned, it's nice to catch up each time we visit. We first went to this restaurant on a recommendation that it was a local favorite and it truly is! The locals that come are comfortable enough to help themselves to the menus and seat themselves in their favorite locations. Don't miss this little gem!"

  • "The restaurant was started by a well-known gourmet chef, developed a following and reputation, and then was sold to current owners who have stayed remarkably faithful to the concept and recipes throughout the years. The food is reliably good, and at a good price. The atmosphere is suitably charming, and the wine list equally good and reasonable. You will not feel like you have been fleeced. I don't go often, but I DO go back."

  • "I received a gift certificate for this restaurant from a gentleman who dines there frequently. It took me a year to use it inasmuch he gave me a gift certificate for lunch the year before. The lunch was not memorable and I did not enjoy it. I'm happy I finally used my certificate for dinner as the dinner was outstanding. I will definitely go back for dinner again."

  • "The owner/chef of Taste Cafe & Bistro has been in this spot for many years. In all the time I've dined there, I have not seen one change on the menu. They do, however, have nightly specials. Both the chef and his wife (who serves as the primary waitstaff) are pleasant and appropriately friendly. The chef needs to update the menu, lighten the sauces, perk up the vegetable offerings and offer something other than mashed or au gratin potatoes. The restaurant is on the small side, which I think is positive. It is a quiet restaurant where you can have a quiet conversation. I like the ambiance; it is not "hip" or pretentious. The cooking area is visible and you can see that they keep this area absolutely spotless."

  • "Enjoyable dining with excellent food (both Chicken and fillet mignon. Timely service by a charming waitress. Wine list adequate and reasonably priced that I would have liked to have seen with a few special bottles. Atmosphere was great and we had a great time with very pleasant surroundings. We plan to return soon with several other couples. Green peppercorn sauce on fillet was a solid pleasure and more flavor than usual in a fillet. Chicken salad was a big hit with my wife with an attractive presentation and enough chicken to have some to take home!"

  • "We found this bistro thanks to OpenTable though 'd been in the area many times before. The food was amazing: i had braised rabbit and baked pesto mushrooms as a side dish. My husband had halibut and a cup of soup. Very delicious and generous portions too. The service was fast and attentive. We had a chance to talk with the chef and thank him personally for the great food."

  • "We arrived for our reservation early and were seated promptly. The place was empty but then slowly it filled up with people greeting the chef and hostess warmly as if they were long time regulars. It was nice to see. I had the petrale sole served pan fried in a white wine and butter sauce. It was delicious. The steamed broccoli and potatoes served with it were good. My husband had a Cesar salad and the steak. He enjoyed it, it was cooked as ordered, medium. Dining at Taste was a nice experience. The service was good. Nothing spectacular to write home about. Certainly nothing to complain about either; it was just good."

  • "Taste Cafe & Bistro is a family-run Italian restaurant with a talented chef (Dad) and a polite and attentive staff (Mom and daughters). We always feel welcome, as if to their home, and choose where we'd like to sit. The food is so delicious and perfectly cooked. My sea bass was lovely, with asparagus, and not too large a serving of mashed potatoes. Yay. They carry a good brand of champagne splits and a nice wine list. Lots of local Monterey Bay offerings, from the greens to the seafood to the wine. And too pricey, so one can go often and on weeknights."

  • "Taste is our absolute favorite restaurant in the area. We're local and we always take our visitors there. The atmosphere is lovely, the prices are reasonable, and the food is top notch. It is family owned and run, and the pride of ownership shines through on every visit. You're treated like an old friend every time you walk in the door. For example, I recently took a colleague there for lunch. The owner overheard me talking about how great their lamb was, but it is only on the dinner menu. When we got ready to leave, the owner came over and said "Call me next time before you come to lunch, and I'll make lamb for you." If you want a gourmet meal in a quiet and romantic atmosphere served by charming hosts, you can't do better."

  • "Food average - used pink unripe tomatoes as garnish in an area where beautiful field grown tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes abound this time of year. Butternut squash ravioli was outstanding while the sand dabs were average."

  • "To begin with, the owners are warm and welcoming. The food is exquisite. Great variety on the menu. Excellent ingredients in preparation. Wait staff is gracious and stop by just the right amount. The ambience is charming. No loud music blaring. It's a bit pricey, but I have always felt it is worth it at Taste."
