Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was great from start to finish, I just wish I saved room for dessert. I went here with my boyfriend and we decided to order a variety of small plates since everything sounded so good. After telling our very attentive and friendly waitress what we wanted she let us know that they would bring them out in a order that made all the food make sense, and that's just what they did! We started with the soft shell blue crab, which was served over a citrus veggie mix. SO good and refreshing. Then we had the oxtail dumpling, which were generously stuffed and delicious. Finally we had the ricotta gnocchi and braised lamb shoulder. It was the perfect end to the perfect meal. Next time we are trying the snapper for two :)"

  • "For all the expectations that were put on Tar and Roses by others, I was worried it would not live up to the hype. I was wrong. The staff were great, the setting was pleasant, and the food lived up to the expectations. If you have the opportunity to eat here, do not pass it up."

  • "We were offered a table right next to the door with all of the foot traffic and asked for a booth. We were then escorted past 3 open tables to a table in the back right next to the kitchen and expo. He was obnoxious, loud and ruined our meal. I think the food is amazing but their staff is oblivious - either the hostess didn't like us or she just had no clue to offer us the two worst seats in the restaurant and the expo needed not yell while the restaurant wasn't even busy. Just an overall let down experience. Next time I'll demand a better seat. As for the food, the oxtail dumpling was the bit hit of the night. A must when you eat here!"

  • "We dined at Tar & Roses with our kids on July 4. It was fairly quiet, due to the the holiday. We started with an order of the popcorn with our drinks and it was a hit. A bit spicy with a nice bacon flavor. We had 2 orders of the oxtail dumplings and one order of the ribs, both of which were excellent. For the main course, we shared the whole snapper and one order of the salmon along with the fiddlehead ferns. The snapper was outstanding. The presentation was awesome and the fish was crispy yet tender. We will definitely return."

  • "The fact that we only had a choice of 6 or 9 PM on a Thursday night a few weeks in advance highlighted how popular this place is, but sometimes popular places are more sizzle than steak. Tar & Roses was extraordinary. We spent a fair bit but have rarely come away feeling it was so worth the remarkable experience. Service was attentive and friendly, and the food was truly among the best meals my fiancee and I have ever eaten. Just sad to think that all other meals will only disappoint by comparison."

  • "2nd trip to this wonderful restaurant and was as terrific as the first. Special kudos for the amazing strawberry dessert.....DO NOT PASS IT UP!"

  • "Each dish was super tasty. Ordered the seasonal fiddle head ferns which were cooked perfectly, seasoned with garlic and spicy pepper flakes, and had a light fluffy shaved cheese on top--a delicious combination! The eggplant side dish was good and the salmon main course was great as well. They do cook the fish medium rare unless you ask for it otherwise. We asked for medium and ours was still a tad squishy on the inside."

  • "Step away from the salt! Several dishes were over salted Chefs, taste your food! Even the ice creams were salted. Too much!"

  • "Very noisy dining room but great service, food and vibe."

  • "We had dined at Tar & Roses previously but with a big group and the whole meal was a blur. This time, my husband and I planned a quiet date night. Our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive but not overly hovering. The food was delicious. We sampled from each section of the menu and clearly nearly every plate including dessert."

  • "Hoped for more. Seated on back porch facing a wall after repeatedly requesting a "special" table. Server was great and food was solid but with high prices, worst table, poor acoustics and dinning on the back porch I won't be back. Too many high quality options out there."

  • "Great lively place if a little noisy. I would certainly return just to eat the snapper. It was delicious and beautifully presented. I will not say how so as not to spoil the wow factor."

  • "A lot of odd dishes, some very good, some not very good. Experimenting is likely to produce some of both varieties."

  • "Interesting food beautifully prepared. Everything we tried was fabulous. I had the duck with fresh cherry sauce and toasted hazelnuts. Will definitely make this a regular dining out spot."

  • "Great food, great atmosphere, and great concepts. Food was well prepared and well executed and just overall a fantastic experience."

  • "Wines by the glass are ridiculously expensive, and there are very few choices. The small plates that we had were ok but not outstanding. I ordered the seafood dish, and the mussels and clams were so small as to be almost invisible. My advice, eat and drink elsewhere before you go."

  • "I love this restaurant. The food is outstanding and the service is brilliant!"

  • "The "make your own" cheese and charcuterie plate was really good. I'm not familiar with a lot of meats and cheeses, but our waiter was very friendly and patient with educating us and recommending some good choices. The strawberry pancake dessert came highly recommended, and was delicious, seemed over-hyped once we ate it. Would definitely like to come here again."

  • "Ordered duck rillete, squid ink pasta, lamb, eggplant and roasted carrots, honeycomb ice cream with strawberry pastry. Everything was good except the carrots (overcooked, smushy and charred). Service was good: server was knowledgeable. Plates replaced periodically."

  • "We had a wonderful first visit to Tar & Roses, and will definitely be back. The oxtail dumplings and scallop ceviche were our favorites, although everything was good. Our server was fantastic too, which made the whole experience outstanding."

  • "One of the first to be seated when T&R opened at 5:30 - there was a line, of course. Our waiter was wonderful - just the right amount of attention, and very knowledgeable and amiable. Food is wonderfully delicious and small plate portions are generous. English peas. Bone marrow. Lamb belly."

  • "We had a great dining experience here. Style is modern American with Asian and European influences. Dishes, even the snack sizes, are suitable for sharing, a definite advantage when there are so many tempting choices - very suitable for couples and small groups. Ingredients are high quality, and the finish is light and fresh. We particularly enjoyed the value-added veggie dishes (eggplant with romesco and burrata, asparagus with parmesan custard). The service is well-informed and engaged, casual and friendly while still professional and efficient. Wine list offers good options by the glass. The atmosphere is buzzy, but the noise level is comfortable - no shouting necessary. Terrific value for money."

  • "Tar & Roses is one of our favorite Santa Monica restaurants. We've been going here for over a year and it never disappoints. Definitely try the whole fried snapper. The noodles and sauce it comes with are perfectly complimentary. It's a lot even for 2 people but we still usually get some bruschetta and charcuterie with it because that is always divine too. The last 4 times we've gone we've gotten the snapper, even though we should probably try something new! It's too good to miss. Ambience is perfect and not stuffy at all. Dimly lit and lots of unique details throughout. The owners definitely created a gem."

  • "I would order everything again! Snack: Peas & Oxtail Dumplings (these come 4 to an order - I could have eaten 10!) Fettucini & Gnocchi, both amazing. Fried Red Snapper - yum!!! and Strawberry Dessert. Perfect meal!"

  • "A great dinner...With so many small plates to choose from we decided to not order any entree and just feast away on one small plate after the other...Would highly recommend the oxtail dumplings (these were so good we had two orders)...the soft shell crab...the clams and for veggies we loved the squash and the mushrooms."

  • "This place was perfect for a date night. The ambiance is nice, the wine is great, and the food is very good. We felt that the dishes were either excellent or nothing special. The hangar steak, ribs, and gem lettuce salad = excellent. The mussels, kale salad, and beets were okay. The wine was great. Ambiance great. Not cheap, though."

  • "It took a while to get a reservation, but it was worth the wait. The food was delicious, the presentation was fantastic and the service was very good. I highly recommend the duck breast and the whole salted fish. "

  • "The outstanding thing about this restaurant is the food, hands down. A wonderous menu filled with gastronomic delights and bursts of unusual flavor pairing that nail it every time. Some must trys are the popcorn (I know it seems like an odd choice but it's amazing), the corn on the cob and carrots will make you want to be a vegetarian... and the gnoicchi... whoa. Try the toffee pudding for dessert which will just complete your meal and end on a constant high note. Service is fast and friendly. My only complaint is that the tables are way too close together. I would have liked a bit more personal space and privacy. Otherwise, WOW!!!! Loved it and can't wait to go again!"

  • "I've had a number of meals here, the last one was a bit more average. Ordinarily you can count on very good food here, altho a bit pricey. A house specialty is the deep-fried snapper. I had seen it served a number of times, so I ordered it. When it came it looked a bit different than I had seen before, not so plump and a bit yellowed. The fish was quite dry and appeared to have been either overcooked or cooked twice. Either way, I have had better food at T&R."

  • "This is by far my favorite restaurant on the west side. Every time I dine here I am so impressed by the quality and flavor of the food on offer. Every mouthful is truly a delight. The braised oxtail dumplings are worth the trip alone. On top of that, the staff are so very friendly, open and warm. There is no arrogance or intimidation to be found here, just knowledgeable wait staff who want you to enjoy your dining experience. Lastly, it is consistently this good. We have dined here four times in the last six months and each and every time I have left with a feeling that 'it really is that good!'"

  • "The service really needs work. Our waitress required the entire order at once, supposedly to ensure better pacing. That's fine. But all of our charcuterie, snacks, and small bites arrived in a span of 15 minutes, and in an order that made NO sense in terms of flavor. (In particular, the spicy, heavily salted balsamic ribs were followed immediately by ricotta gnocchi. The rib aftertaste completely overpowered the gnocchi.) Then we waited 35 minutes at an empty table for our entrees. Our waitress at one point told us they were being plated, but then they took another 15 minutes to arrive. In that time, a busser poured water into my ginger beer, and replaced our plates only to realize that we had no further appetizers coming. "

  • "Excellent food overall with perfect portion sizes. On the pricier side and menu is a little non-traditional in how you order. Only complaint was my eggplant was cold and I'm would have preferred it warm. "

  • "This is another restaurant with small plates to share so that we get to try lots of different flavors. My favorites were the Oxtail dumplings, Singaporean chili crab cake, ricotta gnocchi and the squid ink fettuccine (w/tender octopus!). The whole fried snapper was a beautiful presentation but slightly over done. Normally, I am a big fan of meat but the hanger steak, while good was nothing exciting. I will have to try the duck next time. I will definitely be back for more!"

  • "We stayed for 3 nights in LA and enjoyed all our dining experiences, but loved this place! The atmosphere was vibrant and although the restaurant was busy, we still felt like we had our own space. The service was excellent and the staff were attentive and personable. They also knew their stuff and were happy to answer any questions we had and make wine recommendations. The food was delicious! I had the braised lamb belly with minted apple chutney, which melted in the mouth and my wife and I both had salmon with creamed corn. Neither of us had ever had creamed corn before, but it went beautifully. It was a very hot evening and the waiters ensured our water was always topped up and brought glasses full of ice to keep us cool. A lovely evening"

  • "My boyfriend and I first visited Tar & Roses about 6 months ago and have returned almost every week since! The atmosphere is low key-sophisticated and the staff is friendly and accommodating, but it all comes down to the food. The food and wine list NEVER disappoints. Our favorite dishes include the oxtail dumplings, the bone marrow, the charcuterie and cheeses, the duck and virtually EVERY vegetable option (especially the baby artichokes, though I miss the sunchokes). The piece-de-resistance is the sticky toffee pudding! Don't get me wrong, the strawberry crostada IS as amazing as everyone raves, but my boyfriend claims the toffee pudding is the "best thing he's ever eaten" and I can't help but agree. Our favorite LA restaurant by far! "
