Diner Reviews
  • "Stuck at a table by the entrance, too large for 3 and hard to overcome . Duck should be cooked more. Chicken and salmon excellent altho salmon could have been cooked more. Mgr came over to apologize for the empty corner table behind us that stood vacant during our dinner which was nice and appreciated. Everyone super nice and accommodating"

  • "This is one of my favorite spots to go to in Santa Monica...so whenever we have visitors this is definitely on the list of restaurants to go to. The waiter we had was amazing, and recommended us the right amount of proportions and "must-have" items. He didn't disappoint. I very rarely ever write a review, but we were raving about the T&R all weekend, and felt it was worth a great review. Double thumbs up!"

  • "Food, service, and ambience were perfect! It was my second visit and it was as memorable as my first dining experience! Food melts in your mouth and cooked to perfection!"

  • "We loved this place. The oxtail dumplings were one of the best items we have ever ordered in a restaurant, period. The whole friend snapper for two and the mushrooms and egg were great as well. Our server was wonderful and offered selections that we enjoyed immensely. Would definitely return. Thank you, Tar & Roses!"

  • "My friend had dined here and said it wasn't up to the buzz following it. I ignored her and listened to all of the positive reviews. I should have listened to her. For starters, the receptionist was very rude. that set the mood for your dinner and they happiest person should greet you. She really had a bad attitude. The most important part for me is the food, and that was truly mediocre. Furthermore, if you want a cocktail, they are not licensed to serve them, so its only wine on the menu. There are plenty of other restaurants to go to that are far superior to this one."

  • "This is clearly one the best restaurants in the Los Angeles area. A must try but make sure you make reservations well in advance."

  • "This place was recommended to my boyfriend and me by our co-workers and when my parents came into town to visit we took them there. It was a great setting to take my parents as it was a relaxing/more quiet setting where you were able to converse/catch-up while experiencing great food and a high scale atmosphere. The staff was very attentive and friendly and explained the unique foods in a knowledgeable way. I highly recommend: the oxtail dumpling, the ribs and the rib eye for two (one of the tastiest steaks I have ever had). Also the Brander white wine is one of the best white wines I have had. Thank you for a great night!"

  • "This was really a good surprise. Being used to Northern California cuisine with all its focus on ingredients it was really a great surprise to find the same in Santa Monica. I like the small plates and appetizers. Oxtail dumplings and lamb belly were great; peppers, too. The wine list was comprehensive with a good choice by the glass. The waiter was knowledgeable about the wine and provided a great suggestion. We had bruschette and some cheeses as appetizers. Frankly, next time I would cut this down a little. The bruschette are just so big. It almost counts as a meal to have a few. The other courses were of a more reasonable size to try a few. I had an Affogato as desert and it was very big. Good to share. A really great find!"

  • "This restaurant was rated very highly by Trip Advisor and elsewhere, but it wasn't our favorite of the restaurants we tried in Santa Monica and Venice. The bone marrow appetizer, highly recommended, just tasted like warm fat to us."

  • "This place has a nice setting and ambiance. Would be good for dates and special occasions. The Snapper for 2 is a definite must try! Fish is very meaty and crispy. Maybe so much that it might be more than enough for 2 people! Also tried the bone marrow, mushrooms, and the cauliflower. They're all alright. I felt it was a bit too bland and could use more flavor. I wouldn't get them again. Definitely must get that fish if you dine here! Parking: Valet at $8"

  • "We came to Santa Monica for a conference and looked up articles on the top restaurants. Tar and Roses was a true find! We had 9:15 dinner reservations (because that was all we could get 2 days prior). All of the food was delicious and skillfully prepared. We sat on the outdoor patio which was a bit quieter and more intimate. Our server was fantastic. She was helpful in our selections and all of the food was brought out in a timely way. The food had unique flavors and combinations--all very fresh. We really liked the atmosphere too."

  • "Amazing food and service! Best restaurant I've been to in Santa Monica. Highly recommend for dinner."

  • "Overall good. Gnocchi was best of three dishes. Fluffy and light. Lemon dill sauce had right amount of tang to it. Balsamic glazed ribs were tender, but I expected to taste the balsamic more. Fried snapper was good, but not great. Coating could have used some more seasoning. Presentation exceeded flavor of dish. Wait staff and hosts were top notch."

  • "When one has good and bad things to say, there is reason to write a long review. Therefore this one will be short. Really short. The two of us ate *every* item on the menu under Snacks and Small plates followed by the Crostata for dessert. Each item was flawless in execution, flavors, texture, balance, interest, novelty, intrigue, innovation... and any other flattering adjective you would think to add to the list. This easily made my list of 2014 's Top-10 dining experiences (across LA, NYC, Chicago, London, Munich)"

  • "Popular place so we had to get in early (5:30). appetizer combo (blackboard) was spectacular with lots of choices. But even at 5:30 not so filling that we didn't need dinner. crab was superior. salmon was very good too. attentive, friendly service. about $50 per with wine."

  • "This was my second time coming to this restaurant and I found it to be as excellent as the first time. The waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. The food was delicious (especially the oxtail dumplings small plate and salmon large plate) and even though our reservation was pretty late (10 pm) we never felt rushed during the meal. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place."

  • "Oxtail dumplings, trumpet mushrooms, balsamic ribs, and squid ink fettuccine are all excellent. Yet, please be aware that the beef carpaccio is overly spicy. They're listed as "small dishes" on the menu. Last time we ordered both large and small dishes but big dishes (at least what we ordered, e.g., duck) were hit-and-miss. So this time we ordered only small ones. Next time, we will bring our own bottle of wine -- we found out that we paid $60 for a Spanish wine which is sold at $15 online... Corking fee is $20 at T&R."

  • "I can't rave about this place enough. An extraordinary food experience yet not at all pretentious. STUNNING."

  • "Never disappointed with the amazing and changing menu. I take all of my guests from out of town here and have yet to find someone who isn't amazed. The oxtail dumplings are a must have, but you won't be disappointed by anything you order. Love this place!"

  • "It serves two and if you sit across from each other, each of you can work one half the crispy deep friend fish off the bone. They manage to deeply score the fish so that you get deep-fried squares to work off the bone and dip into the tangy sauce. Sides and small plates were varied and inventive and service was friendly and attentive. Nice casual atmosphere."

  • "Great appetisers and small plates. Entrees are good too but not surprisingly good. Good wine list. Very attentive services nice ambiance. It might be a little loud depending on who sits next to your table. You meant hear the music as it is noisy."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "Awesome food. Great, friendly service. The only complaint if I would have one would be that they ONLY serve wine & beer, no hard alcohol AND the selection of wines was not very extensive. I'm guessing because their space seems quite small and I'm guessing they don't have room to store more..."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "The food was excellent. For me personally, there weren't a lot of what I call mainstream dishes. However, what I had--the kale salad and the gnocchi, plus the strawberry dessert were very good."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "Interesting, creative, well-prepared food, but too rich and too highly spiced for my taste. We loved the soft-shell crab and the melon and speck salad. Lamb belly was too salty for me. Generous portions and excellent, friendly service. However, the noise level was so high that it was difficult to relax and enjoy the food and almost impossible to have a conversation. I would not call the noise level "energetic", I would call it disturbing."

  • "My husband and I dined here on our anniversary for the first time. We ordered off of the Bruschetta menu and then small plates and a large plate. All the dishes were very fresh and interesting. Their take on the traditional tomato bruschetta was delicious with heirloom cherry tomatoes and burrata cheese. I enjoyed having the option to create a meal out of small plates, which included trumpet mushrooms topped with poached duck egg (yummmm) and soft shell crab on asian noodles. After eating dinner, I still felt like I had room for dessert, which was a simple, but fresh strawberry crostata. It was a perfect ending to a great meal."
    Dined on 7/13/2014
  • "The food was outstanding and there are many small plates to share (i.e. the cheese and meat plates were awesome). Everything came out timely and the wait staff was on their toes. The vegetables were amazing...from beets to eggplant, all cooked in various ways and the flavors were tremendous. Definitely a spot for foodies! Will be back there for sure."

  • "This was our second visit to Tar & Roses and it continued to be amazing. The server was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu (wine and food). He made excellent recommendations. The duck breast was delictible and the strawberry ricotta crostata was INSANE!!!"

  • "Everything was great from start to finish, I just wish I saved room for dessert. I went here with my boyfriend and we decided to order a variety of small plates since everything sounded so good. After telling our very attentive and friendly waitress what we wanted she let us know that they would bring them out in a order that made all the food make sense, and that's just what they did! We started with the soft shell blue crab, which was served over a citrus veggie mix. SO good and refreshing. Then we had the oxtail dumpling, which were generously stuffed and delicious. Finally we had the ricotta gnocchi and braised lamb shoulder. It was the perfect end to the perfect meal. Next time we are trying the snapper for two :)"
