A word from Tapeo Restaurant and Tapas Bar
Tapeo offers great Spanish food in a European atmosphere. With authentic Spanish decor Tapeo can accommodate guests in two different dining rooms, whether it be near a fire place or large window overlooking Newbury Street in our Flamenco Dining Room or in a dim lite nook in our downstairs Bodega Room. We offer classic entrees, over 40 regional tapas, and a comprehensive, all-Spanish wine, sherry and spirits list. Tapeo also has outdoor seating, weather permitting. Thanks to a first-class pedigree (Somerville's award-winning Dali shares the same ownership) and an even better location (the heart of Newbury Street), Tapeo is easily the city's most popular Spanish restaurant.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This has been my go-to restaurant for more than ten years when out-of-town company comes or for special dates. The tapas are consistently outstanding, with a variety to please anyone."

  • "Everything we had was fabulous. I highly recommend the goat cheese and honey, patatas bravas, artichokes and shrimp with the spicey sauce (not garlic shrimp). Delicious!!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at Tapeo. I put a special request in my Opentable reservation that I was catching up with a dear friend from college I hadn't seen in 15 years, so an intimate spot would be appreciated. They were amazing and seated ut us in the corner right by the window! Food was delicious as always -- took a while to get our drinks, but other than that, it was another great time at Tapeo."

  • "Stellar dining on posh Newbury Street. Everything was excellent, high points included the tortilla espanola and the braised short ribs. The sangria was delicious and everything was very reasonably priced for the locale."

  • "We had a group of four with one strict GF diner, and no problem finding enough variety for the group and meeting GF needs. Gambas al ajillo, patatas bravas, gorditas, costillitas, alcachofas, and a few others: all very good. I rarely get sangria, but Tapeo's was very good: not too sweet (fairly dry, actually), refreshing, and tasty. There are several dining areas: the entrance is below street level, and that's where the bar (full) and one dining room, another dining room upstairs (where we ate, probably the quietest), and outside on Newbury St. We were at Tapeo two years ago and enjoyed it enough to come back with friends - and weren't disappointed. Good service, knowledgeable staff."

  • "The food was good, but not at all authentic. Waitstaff was inattentive and the restaruant is very noisy."

  • "We had a baby that was a bit fussy, and they were accommodating. We asked for the fan to be turned off as it was a bit cold for baby and they turned it off for us. Overall we had 4 adults and 3 kids 0,2,5, and everyone had a good time."

  • "We went to Tapeo just after opening as we had skipped lunch, so were pretty hungry. We were seated in the upstairs dining room, at a table overlooking Newbury street. For a good while, we were the only table inside, everyone else was outside. Food was great, came quickly and was just as described on the menu. Server very knowledgeable. The place is usually hopping after dark, so the experience we had wasn't necessarily typical."

  • "Food and service were great! We got there early and ate inside (hot on the patio!), which was lovely until a couple of large parties settled into the dining room - acoustics are just too noisy!"

  • "Food was delicious. My complaints would be that 1) we had a reservation fo 8pm & were not sat until 845 & overheard it was an hour wait for a table so basically our reservation was pointless. 2) sitting on first floor indoors was so loud we could barely have a conversation. Food was the saving grace otherwise this dining experience would get an awful rating."

  • "We dined at their downstair, which was very noisy. Their food was so mediocre- nothing new, sophisticated, not classic either. Paella was too salty and not tasty. The place seems to be a typical touristic place in Newbury street-- expensive and not good food. You have a better option out there in Brookline etc."

  • "After mentioning to friends how much I love appetizers, they recommended trying a tapas style restaurant. Tapeo did not disappoint - took my wife of 20 yrs there on our anniversary. After a pleasant walk down Newbury St. on a warm June Sat. evening, we found Tapeo full but not crowded - glad we made reservations. Menu was intriguing and fun. The food was outstanding - we tried five different 'courses', each one better than the last. Great for a date, because the different preparations gave us plenty to talk about. We will definitely return again and again until we try everything on the menu."

  • "We had a reservation with plenty of time to catch a show we had tickets for that night. We arrived for our reservations and were told it would 20-25 minutes for a table. Suffice it to say three more conversations with the hostess and 50 minutes later still no table. The manager spoke to us and blamed us for not taking a table inside. First, don't blame your customer. Second, if you knew I had a show to get to, you should have said that up front. You didn't. We dined here two years ago and loved it, very disappointed now."

  • "The food was nothing spectacular. The scallops left something to be desired, shrimp was frozen, and the churros weren't cooked all the way through. If I'm paying 8.50 for food I expect it at least to be cooked. The patatoes were delicious as was the sangria but there wasn't muh alcohol in it at all. "

  • "I thought that the restaurant was awesome! I went there the other night for my 15th birthday and all the servers were super nice and the food was spectacular! I had never had tapas before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect and some of my friends are really picky eaters, but we all enjoyed it and had a great time! There was a lot of variety among the choices on the menu, so there was no problem with not having enough choices and even though we were late, the hostesses were still very nice and we were seated right away. • "Restaurant went out of its way to make room for a larger group than I reserved for, from an original six to eight. Very noisy, louder than energetic, hard to hear the person seated directly across from you. I'd been led to expect from at least one review in a newspaper a full range of sherries, but they offered only four. Other places in metro Boston have more and I'll try them. The tapas were good but the ones at a tapas place in Woburn center are better. Still, it was a lot of fun, and the prices were ok."

  • "Been coming here when I'm in Boston for ten years. The food is great and importantly, the staff take their time bringing out the flights. The tempo is just right, which isn't always the case with tapas places. My only request would be more seafood. The shellfish are great, but some sardines, anchovies, or less challenging fish would really round out the menu. Thanks for a great night. "

  • "Not certain whether it was our waitress or the general attitude of the wait staff but we waited over 15 minutes after we were seated for the hostess to come back around to ask whether anyone had stopped by to bring us menus and some water. She ended up taking our drink orders which took another 10+ minutes to receive. We had a late evening reservation 9PM and the place wasn't particularly busy. We ended up getting our first set of tapas around 10:15 and can't suggest they were worth the wait. I've been to Tapeo's over the years and had not been there for about 3-4 years. Truly disappointing experience."

  • "We went on a nice spring evening and the food was good (as always), and the ambience sitting outdoors was great. The service wasn't too good (slow to ask if we needed another drink or if we wanted more water). It's possible they didn't staff right for a nice day. However, I'd expect the server to acknowledge this in some way. Given the price you spend on tapas, I'd expect more from a service perspective. "

  • "We were in town for the weekend and wanted to do tapas for dinner so that we could try multiple things. Tapeo did not disappoint. We ordered the meatball special, and two other small plates. Everything was fantastic and it was the light meal we were looking for. The wine list was a bit smaller than I expected but the chardonnay that I ordered was very good and my husband was happy with the beer selections. We would definitely recommend the place and would make another visit next time we are in town."

  • "Nice place to go if you like to share a variety of foods. The quality is good and the prices are not outlandish - except the cocktails. If you stick to water a nice meal for two can be had for about $50 to $60."

  • "The food was exactly as I remembered it in Spain...everything was WONDERFUL!!"

  • "The tapas were solid - not extraordinary but definitely good. The only problem was the service. We were a group of 8 on a Thursday night at 7:30. Our waiter forgot multiple tapas we ordered, brought us multiple tapas that we did not order, only checked in once throughout the whole meal to take drink orders, and did not refill our water glasses a single time throughout the whole meal. Clearly the fact that 18% gratuity is included for parties over 6 made the waiter not care at all about providing a high level of service."
    Dined on 4/24/2014
  • "A couple of the tapas we ordered were good, but most were just "mediocre." One we sent back. We ended up ordering a number of items, so in the end we had a pretty big bill for a "mediocre" meal. Service was disappointing....we kept in having to flag down our server. We regretted going. "

  • "We were seated in what felt like a cave. Our waitress seemed annoyed by serving us and we waiting for 15 minutes for a mere glass if water. We asked for menus to order a second round of food and waited another ten minutes. Food was good, however, service diminished entire dining experience. "

  • "Restaurant is in a great location, cool looking bar, and plenty of seating upstairs with a great view of Newbury Street. Food was just ok. Having had tapas in a few restaurants in New York, Brooklyn, and Barcelona I have to say I was not impressed. We ordered five plates and all were lacking flavor. Being a frequent visitor to Boston I would visit again only to have a drink at the bar."
    Dined on 4/15/2014
  • "I've been here multiple times with typically great food and service, however our last visit was a bit of a disappointment. It was the first truly warm day of year so perhaps their outside seating was packed, but we were inside and our server was no where to be found. She rarely checked on our table, which made the overall experience a bit flat. Food, of course was wonderful. This place is still highly recommended and hopefully our experience was just a fluke."

  • "We went in really craving good tapas and sweet sangria - the sangria was good, but the food was average. Plus, it was only 9:00pm on a Saturday night and they'd already run out of croquetas (croquettes), ham (for the ham and cheese platter), and their plate of the day (meatballs), which was half of our order. Probably really fun for groups if you order a bottle of wine, but it was a little too loud for the service and the food."

  • "The best part of using open table is the ease of reservations. The restaurant then followed up with an email to confirm, then a phone call, and a voicemail that specified that I must call them back to maintain my reservation. Not easy at all, and slightly irritating, but I did it. Then when we arrived we were stuck standing awkwardly for over a half hour waiting for our table. What's the point of a reservation at all, let alone a well confirmed one? The food was pretty good, though the service was a little slow. It was busy but not crowded (there was only one other party besides us waiting) and dinner still took us over 2 hours."

  • "I showed up at 9:02 for a 9:00 reservation and my tavle had been given away. I was not seated until 9:20. We then were not provided with bread or water without special request when the tables next to us were given without extra effort. It took a long time for food to come out and our server took a long to deal with our check. I will not return even tgough the food was good."

  • "great Sangria! Great fix of Spanish food, for a group of friends who studied in Spain together and craved authentic Spanish food!"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "The different tapas are great for sharing and of good size (6 were enough for 3 people.) The service was good but stopped serving water right after bringing the check, which was as soon as we were done eating. The downstairs bar is nice and the atmosphere allows for a cozy date."

  • "I love Tapeo for their amazing tapas, which constantly change, and also for the delicious and fresh drinks. i have never had a bad meal here - the Brazilian crusty cheesy bread and the saffron scallops are 2 of the best."

  • "I went here for restaurant week in 2014 and was really impressed! The restaurant week menu allows each person three tapas and a dessert, which was just about the right amount of food for two people. Really worth noting was the pitcher of sangria, reduced in price from $30 for a pitcher to $15 for a pitcher. The food was great, especially the beef tenderloin, buneulos de verduras, and ceviche. Overall a great experience!"
