A word from Tapeo Restaurant and Tapas Bar
Tapeo offers great Spanish food in a European atmosphere. With authentic Spanish decor Tapeo can accommodate guests in two different dining rooms, whether it be near a fire place or large window overlooking Newbury Street in our Flamenco Dining Room or in a dim lite nook in our downstairs Bodega Room. We offer classic entrees, over 40 regional tapas, and a comprehensive, all-Spanish wine, sherry and spirits list. Tapeo also has outdoor seating, weather permitting. Thanks to a first-class pedigree (Somerville's award-winning Dali shares the same ownership) and an even better location (the heart of Newbury Street), Tapeo is easily the city's most popular Spanish restaurant.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "A couple of the tapas we ordered were good, but most were just "mediocre." One we sent back. We ended up ordering a number of items, so in the end we had a pretty big bill for a "mediocre" meal. Service was disappointing....we kept in having to flag down our server. We regretted going. "

  • "We were seated in what felt like a cave. Our waitress seemed annoyed by serving us and we waiting for 15 minutes for a mere glass if water. We asked for menus to order a second round of food and waited another ten minutes. Food was good, however, service diminished entire dining experience. "

  • "Restaurant is in a great location, cool looking bar, and plenty of seating upstairs with a great view of Newbury Street. Food was just ok. Having had tapas in a few restaurants in New York, Brooklyn, and Barcelona I have to say I was not impressed. We ordered five plates and all were lacking flavor. Being a frequent visitor to Boston I would visit again only to have a drink at the bar."

  • "I've been here multiple times with typically great food and service, however our last visit was a bit of a disappointment. It was the first truly warm day of year so perhaps their outside seating was packed, but we were inside and our server was no where to be found. She rarely checked on our table, which made the overall experience a bit flat. Food, of course was wonderful. This place is still highly recommended and hopefully our experience was just a fluke."

  • "We went in really craving good tapas and sweet sangria - the sangria was good, but the food was average. Plus, it was only 9:00pm on a Saturday night and they'd already run out of croquetas (croquettes), ham (for the ham and cheese platter), and their plate of the day (meatballs), which was half of our order. Probably really fun for groups if you order a bottle of wine, but it was a little too loud for the service and the food."

  • "The best part of using open table is the ease of reservations. The restaurant then followed up with an email to confirm, then a phone call, and a voicemail that specified that I must call them back to maintain my reservation. Not easy at all, and slightly irritating, but I did it. Then when we arrived we were stuck standing awkwardly for over a half hour waiting for our table. What's the point of a reservation at all, let alone a well confirmed one? The food was pretty good, though the service was a little slow. It was busy but not crowded (there was only one other party besides us waiting) and dinner still took us over 2 hours."

  • "I showed up at 9:02 for a 9:00 reservation and my tavle had been given away. I was not seated until 9:20. We then were not provided with bread or water without special request when the tables next to us were given without extra effort. It took a long time for food to come out and our server took a long to deal with our check. I will not return even tgough the food was good."

  • "great Sangria! Great fix of Spanish food, for a group of friends who studied in Spain together and craved authentic Spanish food!"

  • "The different tapas are great for sharing and of good size (6 were enough for 3 people.) The service was good but stopped serving water right after bringing the check, which was as soon as we were done eating. The downstairs bar is nice and the atmosphere allows for a cozy date."

  • "I love Tapeo for their amazing tapas, which constantly change, and also for the delicious and fresh drinks. i have never had a bad meal here - the Brazilian crusty cheesy bread and the saffron scallops are 2 of the best."

  • "I went here for restaurant week in 2014 and was really impressed! The restaurant week menu allows each person three tapas and a dessert, which was just about the right amount of food for two people. Really worth noting was the pitcher of sangria, reduced in price from $30 for a pitcher to $15 for a pitcher. The food was great, especially the beef tenderloin, buneulos de verduras, and ceviche. Overall a great experience!"

  • "The true test of a tapas place is the tortilla de patata. Theirs was grey and watery, not a good sign, and it tasted...watery. Very oily artichoke hearts, unforgivably overcooked lamb, and a lemon pesto pasta that could literally be one of those fair quality canned product mixed with some fresh asparagus, covered in cheese and thrown under the broiler. The ambiance was fine. The dining room, though busy, had a very manageable noise level. The staff was very gracious and friendly and remained that way all night. In my view, bad food for free is still overpriced, so if Newbury street, a restaurant thats quiet and a very friendly staff are reason enough to put up with mediocre fare at outrageous prices, Tapeo is for you, otherwise stay away!"

  • "Cute restaurant. Tapas are okay, not the best but this isn't Spain. We enjoyed the gambas al ajillo, calamares, croquetas, churros were so so, a little hard to chew, like they had been frozen and heated up. Sangria was expensive but decent."

  • "I have frequented this place for a long time. In fact, I would go as far as saying this was my favorite restaurant in all of Boston. I don't know what happened to it. what was once an outstanding Spanish tapas restaurant with traditional dishes and modernized versions of them. Now has a very restricted menu and wine list. It seems like not only the menu has changed but their style of cooking. A lot of the new flavors are more Brazilian than Spanish.further it seems that what once was an impressive display of Spanish wines in their wine list has become decimated. Further, the absence of some of their former signature dishes is likely the reason why I will think twice before returning. It's a real shame what happened to this restaurant."

  • "We had a brief wait at the bar while the rest of our party arrived and were well attended by a knowledgeable bartender. The rest of our party arrived and we were taken to our table. The waitress suggested we order 2-3 tapas per person which sounded about right. She neglected to inform us that the vegetable paella (or any paella for that matter) takes 40 minutes to receive from the time of order. We were told that after we had finished eating and had to wait another 20 minutes for that one dish. Just wish we'd been able to make an informed choice as we were then late to a fundraiser. That said, every dish was delicious!"

  • "The food here is fantastic. Was disappointed with the service. It took forever for the server to finally come over to my table. The hosts at the door were really rude and seemed very irritated with everyone that came in. The manager on duty was amazing! He was so helpful and gave some great tips on what to order, etc."

  • "This is still my favorite restaurant in Boston. I love this place. We always order the same thing and we are never disappointed. Thank you for an awesome Valentine's Day. See you soon."

  • "Well. After being reminded by cellphone several times that our reservation would not be held more than 15 minutes past the time... We showed up at 10 minutes early to be told by the non-smiling hostile lady at the front desk that the restaurant didn't open till 5 and we were welcome to leave and hang out in the snow for 10 minutes. Our server was delightful. Very sweet. The tapas were kind of hard to choke down.. Much better tapas restaurants in Portsmouth , NH and Worcester, MA. Desert was OK. Sangria was good."

  • "This was my second time here. It was great. Good food even for a vegan such as myself. I got the rice and beans and the sauteed mushrooms - both very good. The drinks were good as well. The sangria was nice. Our waiter was very nice as well. Good service. It's a cute spot for dates, which I was on this time around. I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. I liked the lighting. Nice and relaxing yet romantic setting."

  • "I was in town visiting a friend and we decided to go to Tapeo because of its location and great reviews. The atmosphere is fantastic for a special date night with a glowing fireplace and Spanish music playing in the background, but compared to all of the hype about the food I was disappointed. The fried goat cheese was to die for, but the lamb was pretty overcooked and everything else we ordered was nothing special. The service was attentive, but they brought out all of our tapas at the same time so we were in and out of the restaurant in less than an hour. It felt very rushed. The sangria was pretty good but I don't think I would dine here again, although I may recommend it for a date night."

  • "I love this place. The ambiance is great, service is fantastic. I like to sit at the bar and order the 5 dollar tapas as well as other tapas from the regular menu. The sangria is a must in this place. :)"

  • "Our waiter Ricardo gave us great recommendations. The paella was delicious and you can't go wrong with their sangria. Tapas can get a bit pricey after ordering a few."

  • "Garlic lovers will enjoy Tapeo -- its been a special spot for my wife and I for years and we always enjoy coming. I suggest coming a bit later if you like the feel of a bustling restaurant because the last few times we've come its been on the early side (6pm) and feel like we've been the only people in the joint. Food is terrific -- there is nothing I wouldn't order here -- I think that's why its been so successful for so long. We'll be back again/again."

  • "Tapeo is a cute neighborhood spot. It's hard not to compare it to its sister resto, Dali, which has more lovely decor & vibe and a more comprehensive tapas menu. But, a few of our favorites are on this menu as well. I'm glad they offer a good Rioja by the glass. Bartenders were wonderful and attentive. The gambas al ajillo, ceviche, and short ribs were good. Unfortunately the pollo al ajillo recently changed for the worse and has a thick, sweet sauce. I hope they'll change it back. My boyfriend also had some input, firstly that he prefers the normal bread here over Dali's popovers, and secondly that they should devein the shrimp in the ceviche."

  • "Easily the worst dining experience I've had in Boston. We went with a group of 6. The service was slow and it wasn't even busy. The waiter was rude and didn't come back to check on us. We had to find someone to order a second round of drinks. The food came out over a forty minute period. The first dish came out within five minutes, then nothing for twenty minutes, followed by the last dish another twenty minutes later. The waiter didn't come back to ask us for drinks, coffee or dessert, he just brought the check. It was a $300 meal, yet I've been to fast food restaurants with better service. And we weren't the only ones with bad service, the table next to us almost got up and left bc they waited so long for their food."

  • "A group of 10 of us came to Tapeo after a corporate event, and it was perfect for that--casual and fun, but could easily be a nice special occasion place. Due to our group size, we took the servers up on a tasting menu, so delicious plate after plate was brought over, along with helpful descriptions and plenty of sangria. We had a great time, and will definitely be back next time we're in town. (Incidentally, Fernando and his team are great to work with--we nearly booked said corporate event there, but scrapped it as not being large enough.)"

  • "The restaurant itself is beautiful and wait staff was attentive, but not invasively so. Our water glasses were always subtly refilled and we were asked about our experience at the appropriate times. Our waitress had a gift for interrupting only at conversation lulls. The baked goat cheese in tomato sauce was wonderful. The crab and lobster raviolis were very good but could have been seasoned a bit better--needed a pinch more salt to really bring out those awesome flavors. The artichoke hearts are oily in a wonderful way, flawlessly seasoned: simple and delicious. The sizzling garlic shrimp is excellent. This restaurant does a great job of preparing relatively simple things excellently. Definitely recommend it!"

  • "We came as tourists, basing our choice on recommendations here. We found the dishes to be fair: the jamon a bit dry, the cheese served in large, thick slices, the vegetable croquettes tasting more of the batter and oil, and one dish (shrimp and asparagus and egg) was completely inedible (I have never had that experience in a restaurant before). The service was good; the ambiance was fair--the place was a bit worn. But it was packed and lively. We would not return nor recommend it to anyone else."
