Diner Reviews
  • "We spent this past Saturday evening on the romantic patio at Tapas Papa Frita, and didn't want to leave! The choice of tapas was extensive, and those that we ordered as appetizers were delicious. We just had to have the Paella, and that proved to be the perfect event of the night. The wine list is not especially large, but has several good choices. Since it was a Saturday, we had the added pleasure of entertainment. Flamenco, classical guitar, a great singer? It was a perfect night! Another positive shout-out to our waiter, and the other staff!"

  • "I appreciated the call early in the day asking about our seating choice. We were seated on the patio at a table located so we could enjoy the music, watch the flamenco dancer and still be able to visit with our friends. We enjoyed our Tapas tasting sampler of 6 different tapas. It was a good variety of meats, shrimp, cheese, crab stuffed peppers and bacon wrapped stuffed figs. Having a very personable waiter from Spain added to the enjoyment. Along with our pitcher of Sangria, the evening brought back memories of our vista to Spain."

  • "The area is vibrant and the outdoor dining was awesome on a lovely night. The tapas were just the right size and rivaled those I've had throughout Spain."

  • "Don't bother....probably a sign that the restaurants around us were vibrant but this place was empty. Bland and tasteless food. Restaurant didnt seem to clean either."

  • "Outstanding Tapas selection and 9 types of Paellas is tough to beat when they are all good, plus the nite we were there they had a guitar player and flamenco dancer.. just like being in Spain."

  • "A Saturday night in Old Town is typically not an appealing prospect for me. However, with tickets for a nearby show, and a ton of food allergies, options were limited. While I knew that Tapas Papa Frita offers many allergy safe options, I was concerned when my server did not seem very knowledgeable. He repeatedly asked me if it was a "real allergy" or if it would be ok if there was "just a little" in my food. This is a TERRIFYING thing to hear! But then the chef (and owner, if I understand correctly) came out and talked to me. He was not only compassionate, but enthusiastic about accommodating our needs! And the end result was phenomenal. The food was sumptuous, the live music was great, and suddenly, our boisterous evening out was perfect."

  • "If you reserve this place for a special location such as Valentine's Day be prepared to pay a little extra for service fee. Also please be sure you always ask for a regular menu. We were only offer the Valentine's menu special and ended up spending and eating more than what we are used to."

  • "Was a great evening under the lights - beautiful setting. Waiter not very helpful figuring out the menu. Slow service - all business not very friendly. Didn't get one item we ordered but they did remove it from the bill when we told them."

  • "Being visitors to the area, our group likes to try new type of restaurants. The food, service, location were great. Perfect for those wanting to try many different things."

  • "This was a Saturday night and everything went wrong from the start. We had requested a table on the patio but was told none were available. Granted, the restaurant is in the new trendy shopping and dining area of Scottsdale, but there are so many better choices. The kitchen was extremely slow and the servers are very young and must not depend on tips for their income. Also we tried several of the tapas dishes and none were worth coming back for. The flamenco entertainment was kind of fun, but they were way too loud. Maybe we would have enjoyed it more from afar, like the patio..."

  • "We love Tapas Papa Frita and make it part of our annual spring training visit. The Spanish tapas are interesting and delectable. If you are dining at 7pm or later on a Saturday you will also be entertained by a Flamenco guitar player and dancer."

  • "Phenomenal food. Everything was great, except our paella took a very long time to reach our table. Good music, but loud."

  • "Slow service was the start of the evening and may have been okay if the food had been worth the wait...it wasn't. Truly don't understand anyone coming back for a return visit. Flavors were just not there."

  • "I had not been to Spain for forty years! Last time I saw flamenco was in Seville that long ago. We got the best seats in the house! The quartet of performers were magnifico and thoroughly entertaining. The rolls were a little over-baked and dry. One was burned and probably should have been left out of the basket. We enjoyed the dipping sauce which was heavy on the garlic. My food was superb. I had the paella which I had not had since I was in Spain. It was equivalent to that European experience. My husband had the rib eye with red roasted peppers. He said it was equal to others he has had at other restaurants. /Our waiter really made sure we had the right wine. Overall, we thank you for a memorable 33rd anniversary."

  • "We were on our annual spring training vacation and found Tapas Papa Fritas on OpenTable. The reviews were good, but didn't do this place justice. We went on a Sunday night, when they have a Cuban Jazz band playing on the patio. What a night. The music, food, and service were terrific. It was a nice, warm, spring evening. The red bean and sausage soup was AWESOME. The fideo paella was superb! The escargot with sausage and chorizo was great. The lamb shanks were to die for. All in all, we had a terrific , leisurely, 3 hour meal. Sean, our waiter, was on top of our needs and was very personable. I strongly recommend Tapas Papa Fritas, especially on a Sunday evening."

  • "I will not be recommending this place to anyone. In fact I have already told my friends not to go. Our waiter couldn't even take the time to offer us bread or water while we waited 15-20 minutes to make an order. We said that this was our first time dining w/ them and he just stared at us. I asked him to recommend something and he seemed irritated to even do that. When I ordered what he had recommended it was SO FISHY so I sent it back. He rolled his eyes at me and walked away (not even giving me the chance to order something else). When he finally came back I wanted dessert and he proceeded to tell me that I should wait for the rest of my girls to order dessert (needless to say I still ordered my dessert) WHICH WAS MEDIOCRE AT BEST."

  • "We were not told how much the "deal" was for two people plus the paella. We were not told that we did not have to order the paella and that the charge is separate from the tapas "deal". The deal cost more than if we had ordered individual tapas that we could have specifically selected. The service was horrendous. Our drinks were not refilled nor were we checked back on. Our bill took over twenty minutes even though I had my credit card out and many of the staff walked by multiple times. I would definitely not return and I would caution anyone else to go here. I am also a Concierge at an upscale resort in Scottsdale. I will not be sending anyone here."

  • "I love the music of this place, I come here very often. They offer a good variety of Tapas, I have tried several of them, my favorite the seafood one, the paella and Mar y Tierra are my favorites dishes."

  • "We did the special where we got 4 different tapas that the chef and owner decided on. They were things that I never would have picked out. they were so freakin delicious. myself and my 4 guests all agreed that it was some off the best tasting food we've ever had. It is our new favorite restaurant. I will dine here every time I visit Phoenix! The owners served us because it was such a slow night. They were extremely personable, funny, and passionate about what they do."

  • "Tapas is one our favorite dinner choices. We don't drink so can't comment on the bar selection. We sat outside and the patio was lovely, but when they lit the outdoor fires, blowing embers nearly landed on me and they were much to close to the tables and the smell of fuel overtook the smell of the food. The service was good and the wait staff was helpful and accommodating. We selected a few of the selections that were raved about in reviews. The food was just mediocre and was more like something you'd find in a chain. We did not try the paella but did try selections from each of the tapas sections. We would not eat there again."

  • "Thanks to open table my family and I found this beautiful and delicious Spanish Restaurante. I have to say that I am a picky eatter and I was please at this restaurant. Servers were friendly and attentive. Probably the best Paella I have try in America. My nieces went for a big steak and they were in heaven."

  • "Wonderful, authentic Spanish cuisine in a beautiful setting. We sat on the side patio overlooking the "canal" (hey, Scottsdale is doing what it can!). The trees were covered in lights, the tables were beautifully set, and there was a really tasteful combo playing on the patio around the corner (so not too loud where we were sitting). We had the Tapas and Paella special and the churros and chocolate for dessert - it was just as I remembered the food in Spain many years ago. The service was a bit slow (the waiter apologized and treated us to an after-dinner drink) and we were a bit surprised by the bill (a bit spend) but for a special occasion it is well worth it."

  • "Booked the reservation for Saturday, February 15th (one day after Valentine's Day). I knew it would be busy. The entertainment was fun and lively. Our waiter was hustling all over the floor and as a result was too busy to stop by to take our order or assist us for quite a while. The waiter was otherwise great. He was friendly, informative, and funny. Would go 5 stars, except the food was slow to arrive and parties that were seated before and after us were all fed and left before we got our entrees."

  • "Went there for Valentine's day dinner. Romantic setting, great music. The tapas are the way to go....we had 8-9 items and all were fantastic.....the ox tail, the jamon Serrano, anchovies and fried artichoke hearts were our favorites. While at first the waitstaff may appear to be a bit slow and in attentive, it was actually refreshing to not be herded in and out of a restaurant!!! Actually letting you sit and enjoy your food without being on you all the time! Definitely recommend!"

  • "One of the best meals I had had in a long time! The chef came out and talked to us and I thought that was really nice. The service was a tad slow and it wasn't busy. We had a party of 8 so I don't know if they were just giving us space I just wish when it was time to pay they were a little quicker. Other than that everything was perfect. Hands down one of the best restaurants in the valley!"

  • "We had a great dinner and lots of fun at Tapas Papa Frita. It was a Saturday night with live Flamenco music, guitars and excellent dancer. The restaurant was crowded and service was a bit slow but still had a fun evening. We started with manchego and olives with an excellent bottle of tempranillo recommended by our waiter. We had several tapas and enjoyed the cod with egg batter the most, but also liked the tortilla patata, shrimp in garlic, and the calamari."

  • "Great location, with wonderful food. Tapas are wonderful to share if you want to order a variety or if you are not feeling like a large dinner, have a few. Soup was excellent. The location siting outside was fantastic to enjoy the wonderful lights of Scottsdale. Fireplace and heaters if it is cooler outside. Feel like you are in Europe. The inside is great if you have a large party. Beautiful asset to Scottsdale."

  • "If you are a fan of tapas and Spanish cuisine, do not miss this place. The restaurant itself is absolutely stunning with plenty of seating for large groups, an expansive bar, a stage(where they typically have live music on weekend nights), and a wonderful outdoor dining area along the Scottsdale canal. The have a great selection of Spanish wines and a menu which provides plenty of options ranging from tapas to traditional and non-traditional Paella's. I highly recommend this place for a romantic evening or if you are looking to entertain a group of friends. The food is outstanding and very authentic. Highlights include: Any of their Paella's, Pata Negra, tortilla espanola, gambas, bacon wrapped dates, chorizo, croquettas to name a few."
