Diner Reviews
  • "We went here with another couple for the first time. We tried to sit inside but the music was too loud to carry on a conversation. The food tasted very good but the portions seemed small, even for Tapas. I would go back."

  • "My husband and I had high expectations for this restaurant, after seeing it featured on Check Please!, but unfortunately our expectations were not met. The food was good- small plates, just what we thought. Good vegetarian options. The tomato bruschetta was delicious and the caprese salad was also very good. The desserts looked good but were rather bland. Our server was nice but didn't introduce himself, and took very little time to speak with us. It was very hard to hear him over the loud live music. We did see him taking time with other tables, just not ours. We recognized the owner from the TV show and were pleased to see him making the rounds in the dining room, but he ignored us. That really left a bad taste!!"

  • "It's been a year since our last visit to Tapas. We had a wonderful time and a great meal. For fun, we had the waiter pick our tapas. All were wonderful. Our entrée was Paiea which was done remarkably well. You must try their red sangria and order it by the picture. For both, the sangria the valley."

  • "We were at the Tapas Papa Frita for dinner. We were seated immediately and the service given to us was outstanding. The lady who helped us gave great recommendations particularly to one of our companions who is a vegan. The entertainment ( flamenco and superb Spanish guitar player) complemented our meals. The menu even includes what part of Spain the tapas we chose are from. We will definitely go back."

  • "My dining experience had room for improvement. 15 minutes to get our drinks. After 50 minutes we had only been served two of our tapas orders. The tapas is good; however basic and lacking creativity. Tapas should be a social interactive experience.... We were waiting for service the entire night. I mentioned it to the front of house manager... She did nothing to make it right."

  • "Our food was delicious. The service is really slow, we waited a while for menus not to mention refills on drinks. Took over 30 min to get our check. For the prices the service is not what it should be."

  • "We had not dined at Tapas Papa Frita for a couple of years, but this visit was as great as we remembered it. It was a very quiet night, so we got lots of attention, but since it was a special birthday dinner, that was fine with us. ALL of the food was excellent and our service was outstanding. Now that we know there is an elevator from the parking garage, we will dine there much oftener."

  • "It was our 2nd visit to their waterfront location, my husbands birthday dinner. We were concerned when we booked the reservation that it might not be as busy and festive in the summer as it had been a few months ago. We were pleasantly surprised that business was great including entertainment...live music and dancer. Food was delicious and service delightful...felt like we were in Spain again!"

  • "My husband and I went here for our anniversary and we loved it. My husband's family is from Spain and in Arizona it's hard to find authentic Spanish food that he likes. He loved it. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to go to a beautiful restaurant, deal with a friendly staff and eat great food!"

  • "9 girlfriends & I went this past Saturday. They had our table ready, close to the stage so we could watch the flamenco band/dancer. The staff was beyond fabulous in helping us order/recommend food/drinks. But, the best part of the night was the "owner"....he's so energetic & personable. This place is fabulous for couples, groups & families! I will go back next time we are in town for sure & I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun place with great food!"

  • "Service was great and so was the food. I didn't stay late enough but they also have dance performances in the evenings. Very nice atmosphere. Glad to find a place with something like rabbit on the menu (something that isn't offered at most places). I'll definitely go back."

  • "The chef was both talented and a gracious, welcoming host. We sat outside with a view of the Flamenco dancers from the picture windows. A plaza and the Scottsale waterway were part of the view we enjoyed from our table. Every dish we ordered was a delightful surprise for the palate. The atmosphere created by the jubulant musicians and Flamenco dancer is a "spot on" recreation of the bar scene in Spain."

  • "Get directions, it's tough to find, but once you do, the food is outstanding. We lived in Spain for many years, and it was very authentic, we're still talking about it. We ordered several tapas, all were fabulous. The people working were also super friendly, loved it!"

  • "Great flamenco music and flamenco dancer made this a treat. We ate there for Arizona Restaurant week. Loved that they made a separate gluten free menu for that. Food was very good overall and reasonably priced. Server was very helpful and really knew the wine better than most servers we encounter at most restaurants. Will definitely go back."

  • "The staffs were friendly. The atmosphere was great, we sat outside at the patio. It was about 90 degrees outside but the misting system kept us cool. Our server was friendly but kinda hard to understand because he talked very fast. He didn't check regularly on our table. We waited for our food for almost 1.5 hours, and didn't get any explanation of why or what's going on. The food, when it came, were great. We ordered the Chef's Tapas Special (date wrapped in bacon, garlic butter shrimp, manchego cheese, tenderloin beef skewers, lamb chop, pepper stuffed crab meat), and a seafood paella. The paella is outstanding! "

  • "The Paella is legit and the tapas are fantastic. Tortilla Espanola is a must! Wish more people would go, as the ambience is a little quiet. But it is starting to be summer. Great server!"

  • "The food here was excellent. The lamb was so tender it literally fell off the bone. The service was among the worst I've ever experienced. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet the hostess struggled to get us a table. It was a good 10 minutes before anyone came over to greet us or bring us water. When the waiter came over, there was no introduction. He barely explained the menu and was gone. Once we did order, it was hard to get anyone's attention for more service. We ended up going to the bar and getting a second round of drinks for ourselves. This was not a cheap meal. I would expect top notch service when paying higher end prices. Very disappointed. Great food doesn't matter if the overall experience isn't good. "

  • "My wife and I enjoy tapas and have found excellent restaurants in Tucson and internationally that serve the food. When we heard of Tapas Papa Frita were excited for our reservation. First impression was very good with the nice outdoor seating and the interior was very nice. In addition, live music was being played. But when the food came, we were extremely disappointed in the preparation and quality of the food. Everything was very greasy and lacked flavor. "

  • "Food was good but service was horrible. Waited over 30 minutes between courses. Didn't even have time to have the dessert that we ordered and never received. Had to ask to have the charge removed from the bill. Asked to speak to a manager and after waiting another 20 minutes opted to leave since he never showed up either."

  • " First time here.. loved everything we had! I highly recommend the bacon wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese ( for dinner or dessert, or both!) . For an entree try the tempranillo lamb. Perfectly tender, rich, and all around mouth watering. Definitely will be going back!"

  • "First time here bc we wanted to try something new in Old Town. The food was excellent, at least the parts if our order that actually made it to the table. Our server was bad from the very beginning- knew nothing about the menu, awkward, and SLOW. What should have been an hour event trend into 2 only because our server disappeared half the time. Good was good but not good enough to combat terrible service unfortunately. With Kelly's at Southbridge within walking distance, I see no reason to return to Tapas. I will just go to Kelly's where I am guaranteed exceptional food and service. "

  • "Maybe our tapas expectations are extremely high since we enjoy tapas at Meson Sabika. This establishment could take some pointers. Offer clean plates and forks table side. Deliver serving utensils with the tapas. The dates and shrimp were ok. The meatballs and pork not at all good. Plus the tapas portions were on the small side for tapas. "

  • "We had a delightful outside table overlooking the canal. The tapas were wonderful and the paella just the best. We let our waiter recommend, but we felt that the $45.00 per person deal for 6 tapas and paella was going to be too much food. We opted for four tapas (there were four of us) and a shared paella which was perfect. We highly recommend this place. It was Tues. so it was quiet. I understand that it is quite lively on the weekend with live music.."

  • "Abssolutely wonderful food. Everything we tried was great. It was a little windy, and our candle wouldn't stay lit. It wasn't a problem for my girlfriend or me. But the chef noticed and they weren't having it. It took 3 modifications, and them bringing in something additional, but we appreciated their effort. Def must go. "

  • "What a great venue to share a variety of ethnic foods !!! Being a Tapas restaurant, we ordered 11 different tapas dishes and we all shared tastes of each. Accompanied by a pitcher of Sangria, it was a truly gastronomical delight. The outside seating overlooking the canal was beautiful and the service by Eduardo was first rate. Can't wait to go back to try some of the tapas we weren't able to get to the first time."

  • "Recommended by a good friend who visited the restaurant the week prior, we visited the restaurant with another couple. We arrived early and enjoyed a drink at the bar (red sangria for me), and proceeded to our table to await our guests. The staff was extremely attentive, and the place is great for ambience. The flamenco dancer with spanish guitar accompaniment was delightful. Note that the place can be a bit noisy. Being first time visitors, we opted to do the chef's special including paella. The tapas that were included (shrimp, tenderloin, lamb shank, manchego cheese, and bacon wrapped fig) were all exceptional. The paella was plentiful and very tasty. But at a cost of $45/person, it seemed overpriced. We will choose our food next time."

  • "Bad food - the rabbit entree was all small bones and almost no meat and had to be careful with each bite not to swallow a bone. The music was much too loud (and basically bad) and I didn't drink the decaf it was so bad. The price of the entree was twice what I have paid for a rabbit tapas elsewhere with not as much meat as with a small plate tapas.Previous experience in the past was good but not this time. I won't be going back again!"

  • "The food is fantastic, the service is very good, the noise level inside the restaurant is unbearable around 89 db. Outside dining is perfect. Their music and singer are too loud. We ate outside and had a wonderful time."

  • "This is the perfect restaurant for taking your guests. Food selection fantastic and delicious. We had an indoor table close to the flamenco dancers and it was perfect. Dancers were outstanding. We had a unforgettable evening and will definitively return many times."

  • "My roommate and I watched Check Please Arizona and booked the 7:00 reservations online via Open Table. We wanted to see the Flamenco dancer who came on at 7:30 - indoors. She was very attractive and talented, but I would personally relocate the stage to somewhere away from the restrooms, and viewable by the outdoor customers without picking their way inside. The food was terrific, and the outdoor dining alone makes this place worth visiting at least once. The restaurant is in a building shared by the Barrio Cafe and an Italian restaurant whose name escapes me. There is public parking under the building. The restaurant is right over the bridge from the "Waterfront", so the location is well placed for local walking. "
