A 16-foot Buddha, which floats above a reflecting pool filled with Japanese carp, presides over the scene at Tao. A favorite destination for celebrities and athletes, this Pan Asian restaurant specializes in authentic Hong Kong Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisines. Tao has three levels of dining including the prized "Skybox" which offers views of this former movie theater unparalleled in New York.   • "The food was very good but the service was not. We had an 8:45 reservation and still waited almost an hour to be seated. Our waiter, Craig, seemed irked to be there. He never asked if we wanted drinks, none of the meals came out at the same time and he was nowhere to be found when we wanted the check. He was at least civil to us, he was embarrassingly unpleasant to the table next to us. No need to ever return"

  • "This was my 5th or 6th visit to a TAO restaurant (4 in Vegas and 2-3 in NY). We ordered 6 items to share b/w 4 people. Server brought all but one of 5 things we ordered at one time. I've never been served Kobe beef with other entrees and it really diminished the dish. Further, the table was much too crowded. We had to choose b/w letting our other 4 hot entrees get cold or load up a skewer to cook in the hot pot. In the past, the server always timed the dishes so as to only serve a couple at a time."

  • "Took my daughter to Tao for 16th B-day dinner. Our 2nd time dining there. We loved it 3 years ago. While the food lived up to our expectations, our meal felt extremely rushed like they needed to turn our table in 45 minutes or less. We were seated upstairs next to chaotic servers station along balcony although I booked this online weeks earlier and made a special birthday request. The bus boy first tried to clear our appetizer plate while we were still eating. I asked him to leave the plate and slow down. Next, he tried to reach and grab my daughters dinner plate when she took a break from eating. I told him not to but he grabbed it anyways. Last, he tried to clear my $10 cocktail while I was still drinking it. Slow down busboys!"

  • "Been there many times and always liked it, but this time they gave us a table next to the waiters station( I had asked for a nice table for sp occasion), and they kept moving chairs and dropping the dirty dishes right behind us. We asked to be moved, and they did that(the second table wasn't much better!!). I ordered the same dishes as I had had in the past, but this time, they were extremely sweet and supper salty that we had a hard time eating them!!"

I'd stick with a signature cocktail and sushi, if I were to return. The staff is attentive and pleasant. Sitting by the Buddah and coy pond was a treat at the end of a long day!"

Being able to share so many very good dishes and having a very attentive and knowledgeable wait staff make for a great evening of food, sharing and fun. The atmosphere is upbeat and lively and the space is wonderful for first timers within the group who love to take pictures. Overall always a pleasant experience that has not let down its standards over the years I have been going there."

  • "We had a 7:15 reservation for dinner for a party of 6 on a Saturday night, Tao called to confirm that they would not hold a table more than 15 minutes if we were late. Arrived on time and waited over 30 minutes to be seated. We were right next to the front desk yet luckily I checked my phone and found a text that my table was ready. Not sure anyone would have came over if I didn't check my messages. We ordered a large selection of small plates, all very good. I had salmon for my main course which was cooked perfectly, and more than adequate. The noise level was another issue. It was difficult to have a conversation with the noise level of the music. Not sure if I will return with the level of noise even though we enjoyed the food."

  • "I live a block away - just looking for a quick dinner and have not been to Tao in a decade. I now know why. Lots of shorts and flip flops, and more mid-west moms than a suburban soccer game. I suppose the sex in the city thing is still alive and well in midtown. Also - table booked for 6:30, arrive to be told we should spend some time in the lounge with my ten and thirteen years olds (who were better dressed than 90% of the other loungers) 20 minutes later and still no table. I cut my losses and walked over to Nobu57 instead."

Not quite sure how the restaurant can insist on patrons being prompt and yet make them wait this long to be seated. That being said, the ambiance was pretty fabulous--club music, amazing decor, vibrant clientele--as it was a Saturday night and the food was delicious."

  • "It was a surprise dinner for my fiancee. I find the place very nice but it was just too crowded and the noise level was very high. The tables were too close with each other and every time I moved, I would hit the lady's arm from the next table. Not comfortable. You cannot stay long as another reservation has to be accommodated. We had to leave after half an hour. It was not a very good experience, overall. We had to eat at another restaurant later that night after hitting the bar somewhere else."

  • "We ate at Tao's last night. We had eaten there before and I don't know why we hadn't been back til' yesterday. The food is outstanding! We ordered the Peking Duck for two and Asian green beans as a side. We asked our waitress if we should order one or two appetizers. She suggested we order one. We chose the Jumbo Shrimp Tempura-4 large pieces (delicious!). The duck was outrageous. I have never had skin on a duck cooked so perfectly and not fatty. We devoured the duck and beans. Next time we will order 2 appetizers. We were satisfied but the food is so good that I could have fit another appetizer in. For desert we shared some kind of warm apple tart with vanilla ice cream which was also divine. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "We started with the Pot Stickers(oh my, so tasty!) and the Veggie Egg Rolls(also incredible). The pot stickers had a spicy sweet glaze that was just perfect and the egg rolls were perfectly fried and crunchy. For the main, we split an order of the crispy orange chicken. My oh my! This chicken was amazing! Perfectly cooked and the glaze was to die for. Not too sweet with some heat. My taste buds were satisfied and very happy! We finished the meal with lattes(typical but the fact that they are served in bowls made it taste even better). I will definitely return to Tao and highly recommend to anyone looking for a delicious asian fix."

It didn't disappoint! Great food, great atmosphere and great service (although the reception staff could do with a lesson in sharing the rest of the teams good manners and sadly let them down). Def recommend it to any body looking for a great night out!"

Peking duck was a favorite entree for our group and the mochi tasting was a favorite dessert. We would recommend it to a group or party out for a fun, loud evening."

  • "We had a reservation, which we had arrived in time for but we were handed a beeper and told to go have a seat until it went off. There were a lot of other people with beepers but ours went off quick and we were taken to our seat. The restaurant was very full. We had a seat in the upper level. Our server wasn't that excitable but we didn't let it bother us. My Husband ordered the pad thai with chicken and I had seared tuna which was fantastic! We also had the yellowtail with jalapeño sashimi. That was just ok, the flavors were not consistent with every piece. Overall the food and atmosphere were great! Service was a little lackluster."
