Diner Reviews
  • "It is a remarkable place. Food is good and service is normally fast. A hot spot to go with friends and visitors in the city too."

  • "I went to Tao for my bachelorette party dinner, and it was incredible! The atmosphere is amazing, and the food is outstanding. Even the cocktails were great. I had a reservation, and we were seated immediately. The service was great, and everyone who helped us was very friendly. I will definitely go back for a date night or another special occasion."

  • "Very unique restaurant with great ambience and authentic Asian atmosphere. The menu was diverse and our group tried a little bit of everything... dumplings, lobster egg rolls, sea bass, filet mignon, creative sushi, and ultimately the chocolate molten cake. All was delicious! We will definitely visit TAO again on a future visit to the Big Apple. Would highly recommend going with friends/family and sharing."

  • "My group arrived on time but we had to wait an additional hour before we were seated"
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "Not a great start as our table was 20 minutes late and we were made to wait in a crowded bar area. Once at our table, service was then great, as was the food and atmosphere."

  • "Wonderful atmosphere. The food was outstanding. I probably wouldn't bring my children here for dinner (music is very loud), but it's great for dinner with a friend or date night. Great menu selections."

  • "Despite my reservation, I still waited 45 minutes for a table. Service was poor and rushed. The food was good but not amazing. Noise level was very loud."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "I was called to confirm my reservation and to make sure to be on time as they would only hold the table for 15 minutes. I did get there right on time but alas our table was not ready. The bar was packed with nowhere to sit/stand so we were shoved into a corner waiting for 40 minutes. I asked the hostess twice to try to seat us as soon as possible, we had reservations for a set time. If we have to be there within 15 minutes shouldn't they have to seat you in 15 minutes? The blond hostess was extremely rude and standoffish, basically just said there was nothing she could do. This restaurant needs to get over itself, there are thousands of fantastic places in NYC with much better service, do not waste your time here."

  • "Tao is by far my favorite restaurant. Very chic and contemporary. The food is always amazing and has been consistent for many years since I've been going."

  • "Everything here is done with perfection except the lighting. It is so dark (mood lighting???) I don't think I should need my iPhone flashlight to read the menu. And I was not the only one."

  • "Hice una reserva a las 21 hs y cuando llego era un caos de mala organizacion. Me dieron mi mesa después de 45 minutos de espera. Esto paso un lunes. Increíble mala atención"

  • "The place is remarkably loud, tables are small & very close together. So if you are looking for a quiet, romantic place to dine, this is NOT it! I made reservations on Open Table asking for a nice table since it was a special occasion, but was seated in the middle of a crowded baguette. My biggest issue was the number of small children there at that time, especially the two 6 or 7 year olds sitting in the baguette next to my fiancee who were FIGHTING over dolls, crayons and coloring books while the two ladies they were with paid no attention to them whatsoever! A few times the kids got up to play in the aisle and their hair dragged through our food! Sorry, Tao, but I will not return-too many better options around."

  • "We had such a great time here. The decor and mood of this place is really special. Beautiful and vibrant, great music in the bar area!! We cannot wait to go back. Oh and the sushi was fantastic too!"

  • "The restaurant had excellent ambiance. Very noisy. Poor service. Ok food. Overrated. One person in our party had a shellfish allergy. Very limited menu. Even could not order the chicken orange due to sauce. The waiter was terrible."

  • "Consistently the best food and service! I have only been to Tao three times as I am from Sydney, Australia but every time has been amazing. Would recommend to everyone."

  • "I booked my reservation for dinner with a 1,000 point reservation, however, Tao only credited me with 100 points!"

  • "We visited the midtown restaurant and were wowed. Food amazing, service impeccable, ambience lively. Not for kids. A little on the expensive side but well worth the splurge. Music quite loud but we were sat under a speakers felt like a fab club with food. Will definitely return when we are back in New York"

  • "The service was attentive and engaging. Very diverse menu. Food came out promptly and hot. One of our favorite NYC restaurants. Will be back soon."

  • "After making a reservation for 8:30 on a WEEKDAY, we were not seated for another 45 minutes after our reservation. None of the staff informed us or seemed to care we were annoyed by the situation. What's the point of a reservation? Our waitor was hardly around, and we shared a table with another party once we were finally seated. The food was good, but not worth the experience. Not impressed."

  • "Our experience at Tao began badly. We were handed a buzzer and had to wait about 15 minutes in spite of having a reservation. Our drinks arrived just before the buzzer went off so we had to settle up with the bar waitress and carry our full bottles (no glass for a beer without requesting one) to the table. The bar has annoying electronic music which unfortunately is the soundtrack for the entire restaurant. It is too loud and does not coordinate at all with the decor (described as a "majestic Asian temple" on the website) and the pseudo-zen verbiage on the menu. The food was decent enough, with the exception of a mediocre sushi roll, but the noise and pomposity turned us off. We won't be returning."

  • "Tao came highly recommended but: -tables were too close together -too noisy to talk at the table -appetizers were excellent but the main course (orange chicken) was very average. I have had equally good for half the price -the service was slow - I asked for a drink refill twice and it took forever"

  • "I made a dinner reservation on my birthday with my partner and was looking forward to it. I had been to Tao before with clients and had enjoyed my experience. When we arrived we were seated next to a couple who was being served and closing their check out. The waiter ignored me and my partner despite checking in on the couple that was literally a foot away from us. No one ever gave us water or even checked in with us to say "I'm so sorry we are busy right now, but someone will be right with you". We were ignored. I tried to flag the waiter who was serving the couple next to us down by saying "excuse me sir" but he ignored me. After 15 minutes of not being acknowledged we and walked out. I will never step foot in this place again."

  • "This is the coolest spot in Midtown East. Everything on the menu is good, so don't be shy about trying anything. You won't be disappointed. The staff is absolutely on it, the atmosphere is really great, and cocktails are a treat."

  • "Took my wife on her birthday and was a bad decision to do so. Had made reservations for 8:30pm, reached there early (by 8) and were asked to wait and we should get our table closer to the time of our reservation. The beeper went up @ 8:15 and we thought we were lucky to get a spot before time. But since it was a false alarm. The hostess replaced our beeper and said that we might get our table 10 mins late as things are behind schedule (in a a very arrogant tone). I had requested (even had mentioned it on opentable while making the reservation) that since its my wife's birthday, can we get a table on the corner and not in the center. After a 35 minute wait (8.50pm), we got a table and it was in "Center". Even the service was very slow ."

  • "It was my second time at Tao Uptown - the first was an enormous 50-person company dinner which was amazing!!! Since then I've always wanted to come back and what better time than for my birthday! The food was delicious as always - I had the chicken gyozas and roasted chicken. My friends had the noodles with lobster and shrimp. The fortune cookie desert was amazing - came with candles and a happy birthday note! This is a great place to get dressed up for and have a nice dinner with friends or on a date. The ambiance is amazing and it's lively! Sometimes you don't want to be at a quiet restaurant for dinner - ESPECIALLY not for your birthday! :) Our waitress was also really nice and attentive! She didn't rush us out either! :)"

  • "Tao is a NYC classic. I've been here before and it's still a fun place to eat at and hasn't gotten stale after all these years."

  • "Been there many times and always liked it, but this time they gave us a table next to the waiters station( I had asked for a nice table for sp occasion), and they kept moving chairs and dropping the dirty dishes right behind us. We asked to be moved, and they did that(the second table wasn't much better!!). I ordered the same dishes as I had had in the past, but this time, they were extremely sweet and supper salty that we had a hard time eating them!!"

  • "This was my 5th or 6th visit to a TAO restaurant (4 in Vegas and 2-3 in NY). We ordered 6 items to share b/w 4 people. Server brought all but one of 5 things we ordered at one time. I've never been served Kobe beef with other entrees and it really diminished the dish. Further, the table was much too crowded. We had to choose b/w letting our other 4 hot entrees get cold or load up a skewer to cook in the hot pot. In the past, the server always timed the dishes so as to only serve a couple at a time."

  • "Took my daughter to Tao for 16th B-day dinner. Our 2nd time dining there. We loved it 3 years ago. While the food lived up to our expectations, our meal felt extremely rushed like they needed to turn our table in 45 minutes or less. We were seated upstairs next to chaotic servers station along balcony although I booked this online weeks earlier and made a special birthday request. The bus boy first tried to clear our appetizer plate while we were still eating. I asked him to leave the plate and slow down. Next, he tried to reach and grab my daughters dinner plate when she took a break from eating. I told him not to but he grabbed it anyways. Last, he tried to clear my $10 cocktail while I was still drinking it. Slow down busboys!"
