Diner Reviews
  • "Tao is very pretty and trendy. I like the seating on the staircase and the little details like the old men statues. The Rock shrimp appetizer was good. There was nothing about the food that was absolutely mind blowing but it wasn't bad. My favorite thing was the dessert- bread pudding doughnuts. The music changed a few times during the night from different genres, I think the old school hip hop is the best fit. Our waitress however was really nice, the service was very good and I like their sexy dresses. One thing that did bother me was the kids. I love kids, but if your going to Tao to eat dinner- your two year old should be at home with a babysitter, not climbing the steps at Tao."

  • "We saw Tao Downtown while heading to dinner at Buddakan on our last visit to NYC. Looked great from outside and we couldn't wait to try it after already trying the uptown location. We weren't disappointed. The interior is amazing and a great spot for people watching. Cocktails were excellent and the food was delicious all the way from appetizers to dessert. Service was very good as well. Our reservation was for 7:15 and we were seated immediately. We are already planning to return on our next trip in September."

  • "Tao Downtown has a great vibe - wonderful decor and energetic crowd; however, going there for drinks is different than going for dinner. My family had a reservation for 4 at 8:15pm on a Wednesday for my sister's birthday and we weren't seated until 9:45. To make it worse, the hostesses were horrendously obnoxious and we couldn't even get a drink at the bar because it was so crowded. Once we sat down, aside from the noise level being so high that we couldn't hear each other, the food was great and so was our waiter. But worth it to go back for dinner? I think not. Unless we make a reservation 1.5 hours in advance of when we actually plan to eat..."

  • "Ambience & Decor Amazing / Food was salty but desserts were great / Hostess was friendly & beautiful / Waiter was HORRIBLE. He discriminated us because we didnt order much alcohol but table nxt to us did. So he barely came to us to assist. We still ordered $400 worth of food though. Overall Tao uptown is much better"

  • "We had a party of 7 that came for dinner on Sat night. The decor and ambiance was incredible and the food was spectacular!! I made reservations a week in advance and received a personalized email confirming my reservation. I asked to push it back 30 mins and was accommodated. Our server was very enthusiastic w/ excellent service. Everything we ordered tasted amazing. Highly recommend!"

  • "The decor is really special, The bar is interesting with a cocktail list that is unique The food is different and good The restaurant is a little bit noisy The service is nice and fast, but you have the sensation that they want to get rid of you as fast as they can."

  • "I came when this branch first opened and loved the atmospehere and food. Those are still good but the staff were rude and inattentive so we waited almost an hour after our reservation time and were ordered to move as we were in the way while waiting. I appreciate this place is busy but if they continue treating customer badly that won't last for long."

  • "I was looking for a nice place for date night for my boyfriend and I and Tao Downtown was the perfect choice. We had a late dinner on Saturday night and it was busy of course but that didn't take away from the experience. The decor, food, music, ambiance, wait staff etc were a 10 out of 10. I've been to Tao on 58th and Tao Las Vegas and this is by far my favorite location. It is hip, trendy and very "happening"."

  • "Tao Downtown is not just a neighborhood gem. It's a destination spot. We had a great time. The food was outstanding; and the cocktails delicous. They were very accomodating in modifying a meal for one of the kids. And our waitress could not have been sweeter or the service better. Also, the restaurant is beautiful. Wish they would take the noise level down a notch but that will not stop me from returning or recommending Tao Downtown highly to others."

  • "The overall experience was good, but we had to wait one hour to get our reservatet table, that is not good. But the service after this was perfect."

  • "We waited (with reservations) for an hour before sitting but they did give us free dessert for the table. The food and service was excellent. It is a great place to share appetizers and everyone can order their own meal."

  • "We weren't impressed with the waiter. We weren't sure how much to order so we asked if we could order some more if we don't have enough and he said we couldn't. He said we had to order everything at once. Then he rolled his eyes while we were trying to decide. He definitely didn't want to be working. Someone had thrown up nearby and it didn't smell good. The waiter didn't do anything to compensate for that"

  • "Was recommended Tao while in NYC on vacation. Well worth the visit. Highly recommend the Pad Thai, Crispy Thai Pork and Crispy Crab Maki."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "We waited at least an hour to be seated past our reservation (lounge was standing room only), and ended up in the tight fitting row of two-tops (dressed appropriately not in sneakers and jeans like some). Waiter was completely disinterested; gave us only 1-2 suggestions of which dishes were standouts despite a large menu. Had to repeatedly ask for water to be filled and for empty plates and glasses to be removed. The rock shrimp and miso cod are better at Nobu and at least there the service is impeccable. Spicy chili chicken was goopy and not-so-spicy. The rest was beautifully presented (lobster sushi roll, lobster/scallop dim sum) but the flavors didn't live up to the view. The problems are unacceptable for any upscale NYC restaurant."

  • "The food and service at Tao Downtown is slightly better than average, but certainly not worth the $$$$ designation. Where the food and service is lacking, the ambiance makes up . This restaurant is a great spot to bring out-of-town guests or to have a few drinks and appetizers, but I personally did not find the food or service to be impressive at all."

  • "The place was really nice, unfortunately the food was not worth the price. The fish and chicken we ordered were cold. The members of my family let it go. The plate where my food was brought out on had a big chip off. I told the waitress that I had to eat with caution because I was afraid the pieces were in my food but she just brushed it off with a smile. Needless to say I was not happy with the food but it was my daughter's birthday and did not wanted to spoiled it. Overall the ambience and the dessert were really good and we did enjoyed that."

  • "Great place but the food was not what I expected. I was at Buddakhan the night before and it was was so much better food. The servant recommended the most expensive thing from each food group but I do not think it really was what i thought.."

  • "Food was great service was good just a bit crowded and I had to wait 35mins for an 11pm reservation. I would def. go back"

  • "The restaurant is so elegant and ambience is very sexy. Drinks are delicious! Every aspect of the dining experience is well planned. Take a date to wow them. Dinner was good but I expected it to be better. It may be because my salmon was dry. Everything else was very good. The dessert was so incredible it made up for dinner. The music was fantastic! Overall a superb experience. I'll definitely go again soon."

  • "I had an 8:30pm reservation on a Tuesday night and the restaurant not only called twice to confirm, but also sent 2 emails. Each communication stressed that we had to arrive between the 15 minute allotted seating time in order to be taken care of. We arrived a few minutes early and proceeded to wait nearly an hour, continually being told "oh yes, you're our next party of two, it should only be a couple minutes." Never ended up getting seated and we ended up leaving the restaurant. Awful customer service."

  • "What are you doing wasting your time thinking about where you should go?! This should be your first destination if you want to really want to get lucky on your first date I'm being honest. Number one the ambiance is 5 star, the menu is fantastic and the staff hands down I have to say is a very friendly group and very put together. I love music and this place played all my favorite tracks while I'm busy getting pampered and nonchalant. It was perfect to the T. So was my date. ;) To make it short and sweet, this should be your night out, pregame, birthday , make up something just to come inside it's a delight you shouldn't miss."

  • "They do have a pretty trendy atmosphere, which was good for a group of girls having a night out. But we had to wait in the overly crowded bar area, getting pushed by guys who were wasted for 1 hour and 15 minutes while waiting for our table. We weren't seated until midnight with a 10:45 PM reservation! Finally, when we did get our food, it was disappointing. My $50 lobster entree tasted like delivery from a local Chinese restaurant. Our waitress was nice enough but easily disappeared for long stretches of time. The ambiance, (LOTS of) drinks, and the fact that our group would have had fun anyway are what kept dinner from being a complete disaster."

  • "Great setting and a very nice inside seating experience. Food was good, enjoyed the chili chicken. Cocktails were good as well. Nice place for a romantic dinner and be sure to experience the seating on the stairs. This has the best view and you will know what I am talking about as soon as you enter the place. Would love to visit again."

  • "The food at Tao is amazing - but it is ruined by the extremely RUDE servers and wait staff who rush you through your overpriced meal so they can seat the next waiting guests! It truly ruins the experience at this beautiful restaurant!"
