Diner Reviews
  • "This place is okay, but should really bill itself as a vibrant bar scene, not fine dining restaurant. The set up is based around a large bar area that wraps around the restaurant taking over the view of the outside harbor (very few dining tables are next to windows w/harbor views, and those are off to the side, so one feels they're not really in the main dining area). Restaurant bills itself as a fine dining establishment with Calif and Asian cuisine influences. Might be fine food, but it's not a fine dining. Inner restaurant area, inside the wrap-around bar is very noisy. We went for a nice dinner as my wife doesn't eat red meat, so thought the menu would be nice. But, we left the restaurant before ordering any food and went elsewhere."

  • "I found this little gem via yelp. I went with the recommendations and I was so happy I did. Bloody Mary's were divine. Calamari was so good. Soaked in buttermilk and lightly breaded with a light Asian sauce. So good. We also had the Tuna Tartar, delish and loved the giant crisps they were served with. The portions were really nicely sized as well. Not huge but definitely not small."

  • "I never had such bad service...it was a birthday party for my wife and our friends were totally upset about the service. It was a first time and I had a bad experience"

  • "Tantalum is nestled among big box stores. Upon entering the restaurant, you understand its prime realty! There are panoramic views of the harbor in this split-level space. The restaurant was lit only by daylight during our brunch. We recommend the duck fries, which are light but flavorful, the artistic triple beet salad, and the mini fish tacos -- perfect bites. If we're ever in the neighborhood again, we'll stop by for the happy hour. Good deals, great views!"

  • "Tantalum has a terrific room, great menu, very good food. and the prices are OK. Why so loud? Nobody was listening to the band, but everyone was shouting, trying to be heard by their friends or partner. Although we really enjoyed our dinner, it was probably our first and last at Tantalum."

  • "The food, service and general decor was very good to excellent. However the noise level was such that it all but prevented table conversation at anything less than a shout......If you are used to the evening bar scene this is probably not an issue for you...."

  • "Calamari was very good! Our waitress was very attentive and very friendly. My fiance told her that it is our anniversary and that we recently got engaged, she congratulated us and surprised us with free desserts! A tad pricey, but great for special occasions."

  • "Great ambiance but extremely loud. We had a party of 5 and couldn't hear ourselves talking. If your looking for a quite place to dine a loved one, this isn't the place."

  • "Besides the amazing view, the food was fabulous, and the staff were so friendly. Always makes for a great time."

  • "Hi, While all was good, I did find the restuarant too loud. The first time I was there there was not a band playing in the background. With that, everyone need to talk louder. I don't enjoy having to talk loudly to someone across the table or risk dipping my chin in the halibut as I lean over the table to hear the conversation."
    Dined on 6/19/2014
  • "The food and service were very good. I would come back any time soon for the food, however we did not like the ambience too much noise, much more so when the band was playing. We can heardly hear each other and have to yell during our conversation. I think it's not our kind of place for dining because of the noise level."

  • "Had a great brunch on Father's Day. The food was fantastic and our server was excellent. I always recommend Tantalum for the food, service, and beautiful view."

  • "Cool, chic, romantic ambience. Feels very zen and almost tropical theme-parking, but not in a bad way. Excellent service, CLEAN, well designed mens bathroom...and no guy in there selling gum, shots of cologne and handing you paper towels. You must peep this spot, angel."

  • "Met a young lady at Tantalum for the visit. Atmosphere nice. good great, pretty good service. Downside was it took the romance away seeing we had to yell to hear one another. Totally killed first date chemistry!!! For us both..boooooooo"

  • "We were seated promptly. The waitress was able to answer all of our questions about the menu. Very friendly service. The food was excellent. I had the swordfish- I enjoyed every last bite. The noise level was a little high, but what do you expext there is a live band playing in the bar area. Tantalum reminded me of Dukes in Hawaii. So I will be returning."

  • "Dirty Sugar is awesome band. Great place to have a drink, enjoy the view, and the music. One of my favorite places in Long Beach."
    Dined on 5/30/2014
  • "The food and drinks are amazing! The prices are very reasonable! The noise level is deafening when the band isn't playing and painful when it is. "

  • "First I called Friday afternoon to request a window seat(at 7:00 on a Friday night, during college grad parties) they said they would try, we get there and they give us a PERFECT seat for the sunset! Then our server Tyler was great! The food was great! I recommend the calamari appitizer and the Buddha rice dinner!"

  • "We went to Tantalum to celebrate our friend's anniversary. We started with the truffle mac & cheese, it was amazing! I had the wasabi crusted filet and loved it. I traded my mashed potatoes for the brussell sprouts with gorgonzola and pancetta and they were amazing. The others at the table had the halibut, she said it was a little overcooked but still delicious. She had that dish there before and it was better. My fiance had the noodle dish with beef and it was delicious but he was a little jealous of my steak and our friend's husband had also ordered a steak that was very good. Overall the food was outstanding and our server Chris made the evening even more enjoyable by encouraging us to take our time and really enjoy our evening."

  • "Almost everything was wonderful. The girls up front were very friendly and started us immediately. Once seated - the band was playing and we had a terrific view of Alamitos Bay. Our waitress was also very good. "

  • "Open Table made getting a seat on a Monday night a breeze. Another selling point is that the Happy Hour specials go all night on Mondays. The views are wonderful, and the noise level is moderate to energetic, but the tables are spaced in such a way that you don't feel like you're in someone else's dinner conversation. Now onto the food. I ordered the wasabi-crusted filet and I was very pleased. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the accompanying mashed potatoes and mushrooms were as well. To top it off, I had the mini-pavlovas for dessert. For those who don't know what a pavlova is, it's a little piece of fresh-fruit-meringue-heaven in your mouth. Just try it. You won't be sorry. I would definitely come back."

  • "The food was wonderful as well as the drinks. They may want to try and improve the noise level. The food was so good but when you go out for dinner you usually like to talk to the people you are with."

  • "Upon arriving one is welcomed by an experience. The pathway leading in towards the front door has touches of unique cultural pieces within a tropic like area. If you'd like to take a group picture or a couples shot, there is a convenient bench to do so. The interior has a tasteful theme trough out the restaurant ; definitely has ambiance. It is elegant, not to mention the service a food was superb. The food is presented and plated with detail and creativity. You must go! It is an OVERALL experience with a lovely view of the marina."

  • "The restaurant is more Bar then Restaurant. It was good that we were seated in the back of the dinning room away from the loud music. The drinks were great. My wife ordered the Udon Noodles. If not for the hot sauce it would have been highly under seasoned. I ordered the Filet. I ordered it Medium/Rare. When it arrived it was more medium/well. I told the waiter he apologized and said it would be fixed. The manager then brought back the plate with my original steak and argued with me that it was cooked correctly and that it would be rare in the middle. I actually cut the steak in half to show him it was medium/well. They finally replaced the steak. This was the first time I had someone argue with me about how I wanted my order."

  • "Tantalum has excellent food and superior service. We've celebrated birthdays and graduations here and they have always impressed us. The food is exotic but tasty. It can get pricey if you go the full four course meal but worth it for special occasions. Highly recommend it. "

  • "The music was great. Although I miss Micheal this guy helped to make the night dynamic. The woman who sang last week was horrible!!!!! I know I can't sing so I don't try. She should stop trying too. "

  • "This is a great place to hang out and have drinks. The food is pretty good, the drink pour is decent. The service is awesome. The live music on Friday night was decent. Can't hear the lead singer, probably a good thing. "

  • "This Tiki-style restaurant is perfect if you're looking for a lively dining experience with a view. The bar area was PACKED by the time we left. Restaurant is LOUD so sit in back if you don't want to shout through your meal. View was very nice and the food was good...especially the mac & cheese. Lots of interesting cocktails to choose from. Our server was friendly and attentive but put in the wrong order so my husband ate his entree without me. "

  • "I brought my boyfriend here to celebrate his birthday before heading to LA for a comedy show ( we are from LB). Our first waiter had a nasty attitude and was quickly replaced with a friendly duo that definitely helped make it a better experience... Except the first waiter made a mistake with our drink order and gave us the happy hour price for a cocktail and our second waiter "drink shamed" us when we reordered that cocktail saying that it was not a happy hour drink. For them money I spent, it would have been much more professional/better service to keep their mistake to themselves. They made us feel like we were trying to scam them or trick them and it felt icky. Also, they brought a birthday dessert that we didn't ask for.. & charged us!"

  • "We received a confirming call for our reservation. We were given an opportunity to relay any special requests and had a great table with a wonderful view. The presentation of the food was beautiful and the flavors enticing. We enjoyed our meals and we enjoyed the jazz/instrumental music. The view is spectacular. Overall we had a wonderful time and enjoyed our meal. We will return again."
