Diner Reviews
  • "We had a very late dinner here on a Saturday night. Our server was excellent in helping us figure out what would be best for our group, everything was delicious and the pisco sours were perfect. Even if you're not interested in ceviche, the pulpo/octopus, street food sampler and the churrasco tanta were all incredible. Highly recommend for something a little different!"

  • "This will be our new go to in River North. Fun drink menu & some of the best food we've had (and we're foodies). Definitely recommend the cebiche & octopus. Good portions for a good price, too."

  • "This was our first try at Peruvian food and it was excellent. The menu was one page but loaded with choices and the waitress was very patient and proud to explain it to us. We tried some items based on her recommendation and she was right, they were excellent."

  • "This was my second time going to Tanta. I absolutely can't wait to bring my husband there. Every friend I was with felt the same way and we have all booked reservations again. The food is just delicious. Every time something came out we all thought is was our favorite until the next dish came along. The waiter was so knowledgeable and he was a huge help because there is such an extensive menu. The drinks, too, were just outstanding. I truly love this restaurant and can't wait to go back!!!"

  • "The portions of the small plates are large enough for sharing. The ceviche is excellent. It's presentation varies from the usual finely chopped seafood. The chicken and sweet potato skewer was deliciously different."

  • "This was my second visit-do not miss the cebiche !! Great food, great waiters-even the sous chef stopped to answer questions about the menu !!!"

  • "Went on a Sunday night to try and avoid some of the crazy the weekend brings; restaurant was still vibrant, but not overwhelmingly busy. My wife and I were able to get a nice table; staff was great at explaining the dishes and very friendly. Whole Red Snapper is a must; preparation is exceptional! We have already recommended to friends!"

  • "We enjoyed everything immensely. We were a mix of foodies and not, and all of us absolutely loved the food. Wonderful ceviche, interesting preparation, great pisco sours, perfect service. Really different and exciting menu. Pleasantly surprised by bill. Too loud and energetic for grown-ups to go too often, unfortunately."

  • "If you thought of Peruvian food in Chicago as a low cost, BYOB, ethnic-but-not-exciting experience, Tanta will change your mind. It's NOT cheap, there's a liquor license, and the food is anything but dull. I never thought I'd pay $12 for a cocktail, but Tanta's are very good--and they're cheaper than the wine list. The appetizers are delicious—we had a niguiri and a causita—but each was barely two mouthfuls for $9. The entrees, however, are another matter.. This visit, we had the chupe (seafood stew) and the pescado a lo macho (grilled Scottish salmon and calamari). Both were huge, and delicious. We were seated in the same booth and had the same server on both our visits. He was excellent both times. Expect >$100 plus tax and tip for 2. ."

  • "They serve this really hot soup which is still boiling when it arrives at the table. Our entire party burned their tongues, 2 days later, still hurts. Otherwise the food was good."

  • "So good! There is a good variety of Peruvian food! I've been here twice now and plan on coming again :)"

  • "Excellent place... Creative food. They were also very accommodating for people with food restrictions. Our server was excellent in making sure everything I ordered was good for my restrictions. Love that..."

  • "We very much enjoyed our first visit to Tanta, but would order differently next time. Our server had suggested we order three small plates and two entrees--we ordered two and two and we brought food home. We loved the cebiche (although expensive and small for the price, and we got the large size) and octopus, and my husband loved his beef dish. But my chicken, while while tasty, was not as unique as I'd hoped. The "roasted" potatoes turned out to be french fries. Next time (and we would go back) we will order three small plates and one entree. Also--the food came way too fast--entrees literally on top of the appetizers--even though we told the waiter we like our meal paced."

  • "I loved the ceviche and the pulpo anticucho very delicious and presented in the traditional way (ceviche). The ceviche was well executed, flavorful and light; I just wished I had remembered to ask for a bit of ají (hot pepper) to add some heat. The pulpo was mouthwatering and soft. Delicious! The drinks were awesome!"

  • "This was our 3rd visit to Tanta, quickly becoming a new fave. The food has always been spectacular. Perfectly balanced flavors, expert execution and hearty portions. And cocktails are amazing. However, on this visit the service was lacking. Our server's recommendations on cocktails & food left a lot to be desired (I can read the menu, so I want a server to describe flavor profiles, not just say what's in a dish/drink). One member of our party had food allergies, which can be tricky, I understand, but sometimes they were forgotten (not good). Menus were left on the table after the order was taken. Lots of little lacks of attention or enthusiasm made for an overall not great experience. Hopefully service will be improved by our next visit."

  • "We did not get the plantain chips that others were offered and we had to ask.our waiter to explain the menu since he did not. The portions of the appetizers were very small. Good taste but not enough to enjoy or even share. The ceviche was the highlight but would.not return just for that."

  • "A friend recommended Tanta and I am so happy to have heard about it. The food was very creative and unusual having influences from many other countries including Japan and China. There were lots of small plate choices and we especially enjoyed the octopus. Our service was excellent; the server explained the menu well and helped us make choices and the bus staff was amazing too. I am excited to go back and will try new dishes. I can't wait to tell my friends about Tanta!"

  • "Everything about Tanta was amazing -- it is a little expensive, but worth every penny. Went here for my birthday and it was such a treat! Pisco sour was well-made and brought to our table in a timely manner. Some of the smaller plates were made to accommodate the 3 at our table, which made it easier for us to order. We tried the mixto cebiche, pobre niguiri, corazon anticuchos, and chicharron plate. Everything was beautifully plated. Dessert was a home run as well. Point is, you can't go wrong with this place -- I will return!"

  • "The whole fish deep fried and spicy was absolutely delicious. The scallop sushi was also very yummy. We enjoyed the mix of favors and cuisines. In many travels to Peru, I never dined anywhere with quite this cultural mix, but hey it works. My husband who is a vegetarian, was not a thrilled. They possibly need more vegetarian alternatives."

  • "Tanta was worth the wait. it took several tries to finally get this reservation on Thursday night at 6:30. We were seated immediately, but had to wait quite a while for a server to come to the table. Our server, Carla, was wonderful. She was both friendly and knowledgeable. Our food came promptly, once we ordered. Our only complaint is with the service. You can barely put your fork down before your plate is whisked away by one of the helpers. At times, they tried to take our plates before we had finished. I would definitely return to this restaurant, but make sure both the hostess and server know that I was out for a nice, leisurely meal with friends, and did not want my courses to be rushed."

  • "There were three of us in our party. We decided to share the street eats platter and the whole chicken. There was more than enough delicious food for the three of us. The street eats selection was the more interesting of what we had."

  • "Tanta has highly exotic food crafted by some of the most talented chefs around. These dishes are creative, inspire an intrigue in culture, and taste absolutely amazing. The waiters were very helpful in explaining the menu, had great service in refilling water at just the right intervals, replacing eaten baskets of fried plantain chips with a fresh supply, and were very friendly. The restaurant itself had a cool vibe with great artwork, nice lighting, classy tables, linen napkins, and a great ambience to the place. Highly recommend."

  • "Have been here a few times now and each time has been great. I absolutely love their cocktails. The food is wonderful as well. You honestly could not order wrong. The grilled octopus, the cebiches, and the pork fried rice dishes are so tasty and not to be missed. Tanta also nails it on the desserts. This is easily one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago."

  • "everything tasted the same. too many different items had the same sauce. quite a dissapointment."

  • "I hadn't tried Peruvian cuisine before, so gave Tanta a try. Wouldn't make a special trip to return, but if someone suggested going, I'd go. The food was good and the drink I had was "tasty." I think my indifference is because of the type of the cuisine, not the restaurant (it was my 1st sampling Peruvian, so I'm no expert). Service was competent. If you're looking to have an intimate conversation, however, you might want t/d it bt 5pm & 6pm bc it gets loud after 6pm :)"

  • "What can I say but the apps alone were out of this world, the drinks are creative and delicious, and the service pretty fantastic. The only reason I wouldn't go all five stars for Tanta would be that the seafood only options for my veggie/pesci guest were a bit limited, and the t-shirt, blue jean uniform a little to informal for the prices. Otherwise an amazing experience overall."
    Dined on 3/18/2014
  • "Food did not remind me anything that I ate in Peru, authentic were only the names of dishes. Small portions are the size of small tapas and do not justify the price."

  • "Great experience-great authentic drink. Food wonderful as well as service. It is just noisy."

  • "Amazing food. Service was a little slow but the restaurant was slammed. The Pork fried rice with the tortilla was absolutely incredible. All the ceviches and apps we had were excellent as well. Highly recommended!"

  • "We had a great server who gave us suggestions for ordering for our party of 5. The evening was amazing. In addition the restaurant was very accomodating to the change in our party size. Overall I enjoyed the restaurant and the experience."

  • "I wanted to love this restaurant but when we bit into frozen empanadas it went down hill from there. Being a restaurant of that caliber, I expect everything to be fresh and definitely NOT frozen. We were given some excuse that they are made fresh daily but yes frozen. Totally disappointing and unacceptable. Empanadas at any restaurant claiming to be a culinary delight should be ashamed of this practice. It's really hard to enjoy a meal knowing that this is how they prep certain dishes. The staff apologized profusely and removed the item from our bill but that could have been avoided all together. I didn't want free items, I wanted a quality meal. I won't be returning or recommending Tanta."
