Who new Peruvian was so good! Funky combination of rustic south american cuisine with Japanese/asian influences. Hip decor, great bar and cocktails. We had the tasting ceviche and the special ceviche with tempura squid on top - all excellent. Fresh fish, great flavours. The corn (huge kernels) and sweet potato added a nice twist, with contrasting textures and flavours. Loved it. The octopus on seasoned chunky potato was superb - the octopus practically melted in your mouth, it was so tender and flavourful. The beef cheeks and desert (shortbread) were good as well, but not quite as successful as the ceviches. The table next to us had one of the fried rice - looked fantastic. Need to try that next time. Great service - great suggestions. Great find. A must eat in Chicago.

Ever since dining at incredible Peruvian restaurants while visiting Santiago, we've been looking for similar cuisine in Chicago. Tanta exceeded our expectations. The Cebiche was incredible and the fried fish for the entree topped it off. Everything we tried was delicious. Great drinks as well. Can't go wrong with a Pisco Sour but we sampled others and they were just as good. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Food was excellent, tasty and unusual combinations. Waitress was not that prompt and not the friendliest. She was impatient and dumping orders on us. She basically chose 3 cebiches without us confirming it, which were very small portions. Very expensive place especially for the tiny portions. Cocktails were good but weak and wine by glass was too little quantity. Overall was a good experience as food and ambience were really good.

Our dinner at Tonto was amazing. Our server, David, guided us through the menu with some of his favorite items. We loved every dish. The ceviche's were flavorful, fresh and light. We especially loved these. It was quite loud in the restaurant, but that did not get in the way of us having a great meal and a great evening.

A combination of Peruvian regional fare from tapas / small plates to full entrees'. The food is very good - only had one dish that was so-so; the whole fried fish - sauce was too salty and too heavy. Other than that we loved the ceviche, whipped potatoes with crab, tenderloin was amazing and the tuna appetizer had great flavors. This place is very busy so make reservations well in advance. Final word; I travel to Chicago about 6 times a year and have certain spots I always come back to. With so many fantastic places to try I am not going to make Tanta a regular. Glad I went but its not good enough to keep me from discovering a new gem.

No matter how many times we dined here, the food is always great, service outstanding. The small plates are the best for tasting with your partner. There is not bad dish on the menu. As a main dish I always order the beef cheeks, which are very rare to find in other restaurants. After eating the great appetizers, I take the cheeks home with me to enjoy them the next day. My husband loves the the rice dish with fried pork, shrimp and egg and vegetable. The portion is so large, you can have additional two diners at home. Block the noise out and you will enjoy remarkable dinner.

Loved the creativity around the small plates. Great for a date or a group. It's something different and very tasty. The cocktails were top notch and the servers were very knowledgeable. The entrees were pricey and nothing to write home about... I would stick to the appetizers/small plates and cocktails. You'll get a lot more bang for your buck.

Lots of interesting drink options. Food was great. Plenty of gluten free options for me and everything we tried was delicious. Our server was terrific, knew one of us was gluten free and spoke to the chef to confirm what I could eat before he even came to the table. Everything we had was wonderful, everything we saw at the tables around us looked as beautiful as what we had. I would definitely go back so I could try some of the other things we did not have room to try.

We came here for dinner with the department head, a group of 5 altogether. Everyone at the table was completely blown out of the water. The service was out of this world. Our waiter found out a few of us had never been before and he walked us through every item on the menu! He was happy to offer drink recommendations when we had a hard time choosing, and was just generally accommodating. The food was out of this world. We ordered a lot to share, and nothing that was delivered to the table was short of fantastic. The entire staff would frequently walk by to be sure that no plates or silverware needed refreshing, and filled our drinks constantly. There was never a wait. This might be my new favorite.

Food was OK. Nothing exceptional. We tried some small plates and one large plate, as well as two signature drinks. We were not impressed by anything, although the chicken skewers were pretty good. Very noisy at our table for two even when banquet seats next to us were vacant and restaurant was only 80% full for awhile on Sat. night.

really attentive wait staff who knew the menu. we were very well treated and attended to -- especially with a replacement dish that they had screwed up the first time around. the food is very interesting and the menu is comprehensive. I really enjoyed the food at Tanta. I have never had Peruvian food before and discovered that I really liked it! Its a fun venue and I will go back. However, I was annoyed with how my reservation was handled. I was on time but my companion was stuck in traffic. I was told I would be seated when the full party had arrived. Fine, but as I looked around there was no place to sit at the bar and all the high tables had "reserved" signs on them. So I ended up awkwardly hanging out near the bar and when my party arrived, I was shown my table which was one of the high tables in the bar - five feet from where I had been standing for 10 minutes. That table had been open the whole time I waited and it would have been nice to sit earlier.

The service and cocktails were really good, but everything I ate was more like home cooked food not restaurant food and for those prices I could have made things similar that had more flavor, nothing was terrible, nothing was great. For the money, there are many places in Chicago I would rather eat.

Tables here are a bit close together and you can easily overhear your neighbors and if you've got a big booty like me, you may find it awkward to squeeze into and out of the seating. But, once you're all set, you can enjoy a great meal with creative small plates and attentive service. Highlights: pulpo, scallop nigiri, beef empanadas, razor clam special with purple potatoes, and seafood fried rice. Desserts looked amazing but we were too full after all our small plates. Be sure to start the night with one of their tasty cocktails. I went for a classic pisco sour but they have a lot more interesting drinks if you want something a little different. They have booths that fit small groups but I wouldn't suggest more than 4-5 people.

Don't quite understand the rave reviews on Tanta - the food is merely ok - nothing great, and certainly not worth the prices. I had the pulpo anticucho which was so overpriced for $17 - it seemed like it was one tentacle, cut into three and put atop mashed potatoes. The tenderloin was like any piece of steak you would get with a brown sauce/gravy. Not impressed.

I went here with my boyfriend for an anniversary dinner, and Tanta did not disappoint! We were a little early for our reservation, so we had drinks at the bar before eating (I highly recommend the pisco punch, which comes in a fun tiki glass). Although there were entree options on the menu, we opted for small plates (tapas style) and ordered four plates between the two of us. The plates are pretty small (only 2-3 bites each!), but everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and filled us up. Our waiter was very friendly and gave us great tips on what to order (which was helpful for my first Peruvian dining experience!). Would definitely come back for a special occasion or a girls' night!

Tanta has a unique cuisine with delicious food but the very loud music and background noise was more suited for a bar than for a fine dining establishment. I understand the "fun" aspect of the restaurant but the noise level required the type of yelling at your dining partner that would result in the loss of your voice over time. The meal was also quite rushed in pace by our server and we had cocktails, an appetizer and entrees in a little over an hour. The cocktails and food were delicious, they need to slow down the pace and quiet the space a bit before I would want to return.

It was simultaneously the leanest but most tender and flavorful belly I've ever had We also had 3 different seafood appetizers which were fantastic. As I read editorials and reviews about how great this restaurant is, I was excited to make my round to Tanta! Then was highly disappointed! Food was good don't get me wrong with great presentation you'd expect for the price and drinks were also...but just good...after spending $300 for 3 people, it should at best be great. Extremely rude service didn't help. I should not be bothered to have to complain to manager of serving experience. Restaurant it's self had cool styling and ambience was enjoyable, expect loud but not over bearing. Many other Peruvian restaurants that I'd rate excellent over Tanta. Unfortunately because of such rude, entitled service I will not be back not recommend to friends.
