Tannin Wine Bar and KitchenThoughtfulIn my reservation I made a note that we were coming for our four-year anniversary. Upon arrival, we were given flutes of champagne, and the waiter who brought our food (not our waitress for the night) even wished us a Happy Anniversary. The staff was so polite, and well-versed on the menu and questions. The menu is so well thought through. The small plates are much more than that; they are packed with flavor and partnered with the perfect accents. The wine list is amazing and the drinks are crafty. I rated the noise 'moderate,' because we sat outside and it was bustling but not too loud, nor did it feel like we were on the street - which we were. Highly recommend not only for the food, but for the service. We did the tasting menu and got to try a lot of stuff for a good value. The standouts were the Local Pig sausage, wild mushroom truffle soup, and the trout with carmelized pecans, which was amazing! However, everything was really good. We also did customized flights of wine and had a great time trying new wines. We were a little packed in there. We had the Ahi Tuna appetizer, it was simple and elegant. I had the quinoa with fresh vegetables and butter sauce, and it was great...a very unique preparation for quinoa with lots of flavor. My husband made it an "all tuna" night with the Ahi Tuna entrée, and he wasn't disappointed. We also split a chocolate lava cake dessert. It was light and delicious.
Service was relaxed but professional. Our waiter was very helpful with suggestions and was attentive with out being obtrusive.
This is not a white tablecloth restaurant, though you might expect it looking at the menu. You can dress up or wear jeans and feel comfortable at Tannin.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful restaurantMy husband and I ate from the tasting menu. I got mussels, mushroom soup and ahi tuna; he got carpaccio, beet salad and pork chops. The tasting menu also included dessert for each of us. I also got coffee and a glass of wine, while hubby had a diet soda. We had plenty to eat and our bill, with tax, was $103. It was a bit pricey but so, so, so good! And the atmosphere was casual and relaxed. We're casual folks and didn't feel at all out of place at Tannin. The food was cooked and plated beautifully and the restaurant was cozy with tasteful decor. So yes wine selection is extensive and high quality without being overwhelming but the food really surprised in a good way. Great selection of starters that are fesh tasty and reasonably priced. Entrees all seem well thought out even though my wife and I only had the wagyu burger because we ate too many starter dishes. Our waitress, Monica, was very helpful and attentive. Service is always attentive and conscious of our time constraints. The tuna and mussels are two favorite starters. You can order off the a la carte menu, the burger is really good, or try the 4 course tasting menu. The price is right for the latter experience and the portion sizes are satisfying but won't leave you overstuffed. We started with a cheese plate which we like to do. The cheeses and accompaniments were great and beautifully presented. for entrees, i had the roasted chicken breast and my companion had the butternut squash risotto. Both dishes were well-prepared and presented. I was tempted by the nightly special of walleye, but went with the chicken because it is one of my favorites. Both dishes were delicious. The wine list is extensive with a huge number available by the glass. You can spend a lot, but you don't have to because there are many interesting wines reasonably priced. It can get a little noisy if you're sitting in the bar area, but the restaurant has a nice, urban feel to it. Good wines, good food, good service. I would highly reccomend the tasting menu as it gives many options that can be shared among friends. I loved everything I had: tuna tartare, beet salad, seared ahi tuna with wasabi mashed potatoes and a warm peanut butter and chocolate cookie. A special bonus for us was that bottles of wine were buy one get one free on the day we were there! Have to get the Thai Chili Shrimp. My husband and I ended up back there a few nights later since the restaurant we had a reservation at was suddenly closed. Great idea to go back. The Sunday wine special of buy one bottle get one free and the Kansas City steak are not to be missed. took my sis and her husband there for there first time and they thoroughly enjoyed it.
he got the bean soup(soup de jour) with the pork cheek, my sis got the ahi tuna tartare w/the mushroom soup, both my husband and i enjoyed the cream of mushroom soup as well w/the ahi tuna as well. sumptuous.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMLong, fantastic dinnerDinner with a friend from out of town was lovely. We both had the tasting menu, and everything was excellent. Timely delivery of courses, perfect portions. Our server was nice and efficient, but I don't love it when a server offers me an opinion on something she isn't sure about. I had a question between vintages of the same wine and instead of asking, she offered a mediocre response herself. Our choice got mixed up, but the sommelier offered detailed descriptions of the differences and in the end it was perfect.
We were there for about 4.5 hours and were well taken care of the whole time. The crowd got fuller and louder as the night went on. Definitely a young professional's scene after 10 or so.
