A word from Tanino
You will feel as if you've traveled back in time to Old Italy. Tanino Drago grew up in a small town in Sicily. His father made the family's wine, cheese and olive oil. His mother made the fresh pasta and bread. Tanino it seems was destined to master the art of fine Italian cuisine. He worked at his uncle's trattoria and studied at the Giarre Culinary School. It all comes together beautifully at Tanino's in Westwood. The Renaissance-style building was designed by Paul Williams and built in 1929.Continued

  • "Great Italian. The osso buco is to die for, melt-in-your-mouth, and served on a bed of risotto. And I've never before seen Brunello by the glass. It's cheaper than it seems, because the $18.50 glass is very generous. Recommend highly."

  • "i have been going to Tanino ever since it opened. You can always find superb food and wines, very good service. it is far quieter for lunch than dinner. Tanino himself appears and often sits a bit with regulars. This time, i introduced a friend who was bowled over by the food."

  • "Party of three, two seemed happy with their dish. I had the Fruti di Mare pasta and was not pleased. The seafood just didn't seem fresh and the shrimp were tough - like chewy tough. I've never had tough shrimp served to me before. One of the specials that the waiter offered prior to ordering was "grilled langostinas," or basically grilled shrimp. I don't think seafood deliveries are on Friday. It was a business lunch so I didn't say anything, but I was disappointed."

  • "Chicken in caper butter was flavorless and too salty. Tomato sauce with fried calamari was totally missable. I would not dine here again, especially considering the price."

  • "quiet little gem of a restaurant in the heart of westwood. walking distance to the geffen theater. the food is delicious. I love the Branzino with vegetables."

  • "Tanino is one of the best Italian restaurants in LA. The menu is exquisite and everything is delicious. The service is professional yet friendly. Sautéed calamari, artichoke salad, osso buco, parpadelle, ravioli... all were excellent. The only thing was that they sometimes run out of my fave dessert, panacotta."

  • "Very attractive decor in Italian style. Large menu with many inviting choices available. We went for the pasta and both our selections were excellent, papardelli with lamb ragu, and ravioli. Pasta is house-made, tender and delicious. I would definitely return to try others, particularly the entrees which sounded tempting. We also shared a salad to start, but the dressing was bland and skimpy. Prices are fair and service very professional."

  • "The food here is worth every calorie and any time spent exercising. I love the pasta here and the bread is also great. You cannot go wrong with any dish but my favs are the spagetti Bolognese and the spagetti wrapped in eggplant. Desserts are also very good. I come here for lunch and dinner and both are wonderful."

  • "Portions very small. Food is decent but nothing I would rave about. Over priced for the small portions. We asked the bartender to recommend a wine, of course he recommended the most expensive one they had which really wasn't very good. Servers were polite but we were switched off to someone else towards the end of our meal and not told why, if someone was going on break or something else. The bar is gorgeous and we sat outside which was nice though a little noisy. I would not go back again nor would I recommend. There are many other great restaurants in Westwood."

  • "Service was great and very attentive. Interesting dishes. I had the beet salad and chicken mushroom ravioli and both were fabulous. The only minor complaint I have is the valet parking was slow and had to wait in line on the street for about 10 minutes."

  • "Excellent dining option for any occasion. Short walk from the restaurant to the Geffen Playhouse makes it convenient for pre or post theatre celebrations!"

  • "This is a very pretty, nice restaurant. Although the crowd is a bit older and the atomosphere is not "exciting", it is quiet and lovely inside. More importantly, the food is consistently delicious and beautifully prepared. The service is also lovely - kind, polite, helpful and prompt without rushing. I love to go here before going to the Geffen. I valet my car at the restaurant and walk the two blocks to the theater. Tanino's is a great way to start the evening."

  • "My friend and I arrived for our 7:00PM reservation. We received a warm welcome from the host, and we were seated immediately. We did ask to change tables due to being placed so closely to another table. Once we were seated outside, we waited and waited for someone to offer us water, or to take our drink order. It was not until the host walked by to ask if we had been helped yet. Shortly after, we did get our water and our drink order was taken. However, our server never came to take our food order, or to introduce himself. We had to request him from a bus boy. The service remained poor throughout the night. Our server did not check on us to see if we needed refills; once again, we had to flag someone down and request this"

  • "My wife ate at Tanino's while on business at UCLA, so she really wanted to bring the family the next time we were down. We each had different plates, all done too perfection. My wife & I shared a Insalata di Carciofi... delicious. The twins shared a Insalata Cesare and enjoyed it. For the main course, we had Trenette Al Pesto, Scaloppina ai piacere, Filetto di Bue & Pappardelle al Ragu’ d’Agnello. The winner was my wife's Scaloppina ai piacere... amazing, great flavor. My wife had a very nice Sauvignon Blanc (didn't catch the name). Desserts were a dense choc no flour cake and an assortment of biscottis with coffee. Did I mention I am on South Beach Diet Phase 1? Oh well, it was worth it!"

  • "Whenever I'm in Los Angeles, I try to eat at Tanino. It is one of the loveliest spaces in the city, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming, whether you're there for a drink at the bar or a major meal. The menu is always strong, if not exciting, and the experience a complete pleasure."

  • "This was my first visit to Tanino and I enjoyed my meal. The food was excellent and the service was. courteous, however, as a disabled person I was dismayed to find that the only restroom is upstairs. This will be a deal breaker for me as far as making a return visit. Open Table I am disappointed that your site didn't give me a heads up so that I could have made an informed decision."

  • "We dined with in-laws and had the pleasure of being able to hear one another talk--we are all over 70, and this can be a problem in many restaurants. The staff made sure we got the table we wanted, and we were comfortable throughout the excellent meal."

  • "Dined here for a business meeting, and have also come for lunch in the past. This is no cheapy, mediocre Italian. The food is always delicious and tastes authentic. But it's also not cheap! It's certainly not my recommendation for a quick or inexpensive meal. But for something finer and nicer in Westwood, I would definitely recommend this (even over Napa Valley or Palomino)."

  • "Tanino is a nice space with very attentive staff. The food is good but not great - bread was warm and perfectly chewy with oil and balsamic on the table for dipping, soup was an odd color but tasty, salad was very fresh but under seasoned (and no offer of fresh cracked black pepper), ravioli were good but the string pastas was rather overcooked for our tastes and the pesto was very over-sauced, desserts were delicious but the coffee left an odd aftertaste. Still, it's very convenient for pre-theater dining."

  • "The flavor was there the execution was lacking. The mussel risotto was flavor, but the dish was soupy and the rice undercooked. Our gnocchi in a lamb ragu tasted as though it was made with canned meat."

  • "Very expensive. House wine awful Food good but not elegant or creative enough for the $... But Convenient for pre-theatre."
    Dined on 12/17/2013
  • "We went to Tanino for pre-theatre dinner and were seated immediately. It took 10 minutes for someone to ask us about a drink and another 10 to get a glass of water and a club soda. More time to take out order. Our salads came and we were nearly finished with them before someone came by to ask us about fresh pepper. At that point we had served ourselves with the pepper shaker that was on the table which was so clogged that we had to open it up and pour it into our hands. Dinner came and simply had no flavor--good thing the salt shaker worked! 20 minutes more for the check process to get completed--we had to ask for the check three times. I don't think I have ever left a tip of under 15%. Tanino was a first!"

  • "Just had one of the best Italian meals ever! For starters, my daughter and I split the melon and prosciutto appetizer - very fresh and best shared. My daughter's ribeye steak was huge, tender, delicious and flavorful as were the garlic mashed potatoes. My Pappardelle with lamb ragout was superb! My husband loved his Cesar Romaine salad with shaved parmesan, and the Penne with prosciutto and vodka sauce; another excellent entree. We each ordered a glass of Papa Drago's signature red wine, which was most excellent and smooth; we liked it so much that we ordered two bottles of wine to take home! Can't wait to come back again!"

  • "We were a party of five. Not one of the group complimented the food .Generally the complaint was that the food lacked flavor. In my case, a pasta pomdoro was overcooked and quite tasteless. It was also very expensive at around $70 per person which included 4 starters, 5 entrees, 2 desserts, 4 cocktails and two bottles of the least expensive wine. We agreed that Palominos across the road served better food and was much better value. We shall not be going back to Taninos."

  • "Food was just so-so. In our party of four, one sent her spinach ravioli back because it was lukewarm. When it was returned, it was unevenly heated - one ravioli was hot on one side and cool on the other. Another member had the eggplant spaghetti dish and the pasta was overcooked and appeared to be prepared and reheated. We arrived right at 5PM. We had the "molten" pumpkin desert - but there wasn't a molten center! We won't be returning."

  • "If you can have time for a delicious dinner before you go see a show at th Geffin, Tanino's is the place! We had a burrata salad, and the fish special, which was simple but perfectly grilled salmon, swordfish, halibut and branzino over spinach. My date had a yummy Italian white wine called Gavi, and I tasted it (didn't get a full glass so Icould stay awake for the theatre!) Next time, I will certainly have a glass of wine. Hope next time comes soon!"

  • "Seriously one of the best Italian restaurant in LA. The food is fresh and light but you leave there completly astified. The Branzino melts in your mouth and they prepare it in fron of you....European style."
