A word from Tangata
Tangata (or "mankind" in the tribal Maori language of New Zealand) features sleek, contemporary decor, glass walls and a ceiling framed with stuccoed beams and large sky lights allowing ambient light to illuminate the main dining area. Located in the historic setting of the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art, the 160-seat restaurant dedicates half of its seating to alfresco dining on two patio areas with larger seating capacities available for private events. Residing within a lush mission-style courtyard featuring fountains, year-round flowers and a Spanish-style balcony, Tangata offers a truly magical setting. Tangata serves a diverse menu of California cuisine infused with Joachim Splichal´s award-winning French signature style.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I love this little restaurant. Tangata has a modern art museum feel, but is located within the Bowers Museum, amidst exhibits on ancient Egyptian animal mummies, ancient China, Vanuatu's head hunters and Beethoven. The food is wonderful, not inexpensive, but not too pricey either. What you'd expect to pay in a nice bistro that serves quality dishes. We had a wonderful Angus burger and pasta w/mussels. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We've eaten there before and will do so again."

  • "Service was indifferent, we had to hunt for the waiter twice during our lunch. Food was overpriced for the quality and presentation. Would not recommend it."

  • "We had noticed the restaurant on past visits to the Bower, but never took the time to eat there. Everything about the experience was excellent. A fun complement to our museum visit. Staff was very helpful."

  • "If I lived in the area of this jewel of a museum, I'd lunch often at Tangata. It's always so enjoyable to sit outside and enjoy a nice meal whenever we go to Orange County to catch the exceptional exhibits at The Bowers, and it's a real bonus that Tangata is part of the package!"

  • "A lovely architectural setting with arches, court yards, trees and museum interests that serves modern up scale food. The service is professional and personal. They offer fresh hot bread and tasty entrees for omnivores and vegetarians alike. No better place to have lunch in Santa Anna."

  • "Thourougly enjoyed our dining experience. We sat on the patio overlooking the courtyard. Our food was delicious...chicken Caesar salad and chicken breast sandwich on banquette with grilled veggies, etc. Large portions and beautiful presentation. Our server was friendly and attentive. We will go back and an added bonus, the Bowers Museum. A wonderful day. Free parking with restaurant validation. Enjoy!"

  • "The food was prepared just right. I had the Manchego Salad which was wonderful. My friend had the spinach ravioli which she loved. The waitress brought us extra salad dressing promptly when requested and some manchego cheese for my friend to try. She was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is lovely for outdoor dining."

  • "We received an early seating, outdoors, on the patio, in a shady spot, with the birds and wind as quiet companions. The food was prompt, delicious, with water top ups and plates whipped away as needed and dessert presented quickly. Couldn't have asked for more!"

  • "A real gem of a restaurant. Went to the VanCleff and Arpels show at the Bowers Museum and had lunch at the restaurant. It did pay to have a reservation, the room filled up quickly. Beautiful day so we sat outside on the day before Valentine's Day which was very warm so definitely needed the umbrella covering the table. The food was very good and came to the table very quickly. The salmon salad was delicious. The others in the party had a salad and sandwich. All of us enjoyed the food. All in all it was a perfect lunch stop and a great day out."

  • "Went there for a Valentine's dinner. Food fabulous as always. Service fantastic. However, we were seated outside on a small terrace--what a surprise to us at 5:30 p.m. on Valentine's evening! The restaurant was not crowded, we had our reservations and even got a phone call confirmation. Not ever a mention of you will be eating outside. Eating outside is not the same as eating inside. No special red flower or pink napkin at our table. I was very, very disappointed and could not get a really good answer as to why they put us outside. There was plenty of room inside, even as we left."

  • "We were very disappointed in the evening. The food was good but we hadn't realized there was a prix fixe menu and it only had two choices per course. Red wine served in small white wine glasses. Our server was inadequate at best and seats very uncomfortable."

  • "I have gone to Tangata many times since I am a Bower's member. This time I was truly disappointed. The wine list is pretty decent but Tangata now is serving wine in glasses that are very small, making it impossible to breathe in the bouquet or to really look at the legs on the wine. I would like decent glasses back. The food was just average, nothing at all remarkable in the choices, either. In times past there were selections that mirrored the exhibits, which was not only a good idea but brought interesting choices to the menu. They don't appear to be doing that anymore, either. So, the selections were limited and only average. I had the chicken sandwich and my friend the tuna. Nothing really noteworthy. I hope for better next time."

  • "I visit the Bowers four or more times per year, and being a member allows me to bring along a guest, and every time we go, we have lunch. It is something we look forward to when we visit. One of these days I will make it through the chicken sandwich....and have dessert! Service is wonderful..attentive but not overbearing, and the food is so good, pretty to look at, and just enough."

  • "We were outside and the awnings didn't block the sun very well. Salads were fine, but chicken tough. A decent option for a Bowers Museum visit, but probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. My husband's drink order was forgotten, then came wrong. then finally got it."

  • "I was pleasantly surprised to find such a nice lunch room in the Bowers Museum. The menu has enough variety to offer something for most people. The atmosphere is nice, the food is good and the hostess and service staff are excellent. But someone needs to speak to the manager about his discriminatory behavior."

  • "Food was "okay." A little over priced. $16 for grilled chicken caesar salad; $18 for mixed greens, fruit nuts, cheese and chicken salad. A little crowded -- not much space between tables. Very noisy."

  • "I do not expect much from any food venue associated with an attraction or museum as you are really a captive audience. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Tangata. The food was indeed very good and a far more extensive menu than expected. The service was very nice."

  • "My husband and I ate here several months ago and had the ravioli. It was delicious..wonderful sage inspired filling, swimming in a light cream sauce. I returned with a girlfriend yesterday and we had the crab cake appetizer and ravioli for an entree. The crab cake was not appealing looking when cut and tasted more like tuna fish than crab. The ravioli was dry with very little sauce. So...I have to conclude that the quality and presentation of the food is unreliable. I was very disappointed. Maybe the sandwiches are better."

  • "Had a reservation but no table available on arrival. Food was adequate--and pricey. Server was slow and surly. I ordered a house, mixed green salad with grilled salmon, but instead was given a cobb salad. My sister ordered the Manchego salad with chicken but the chicken was dry and scant. We had to ask for water, coffee, a dessert menu, and our check. I was charged for the cobb salad but when I questioned Jorge, our server, about the cost he said that I ordered a large salad which was more expensive than the Cobb salad. Did I know I had a choice of salad sizes---I think NOT. Jorge had the audacity to offer to charge me for the higher priced salad. Customer service training is highly recommended for the owners of this restaurant."

  • "Visited last week after the museum with six friends. Food selections are varied and portions generous. Bread is delicious. Service was good, not excellent, but they had several large groups that day. Arugula salad: good but overpriced; spinach/ricotta ravioli: creamy and delicious, good value for the money. Hostess was overly fussy: we arrived 8 minutes early but she would not seat us (though table was ready) until exactly 12:45...weird. I would visit again, but not often. A bit overpriced as well."

  • "We went to the museum after hours and were looking forward to the price fixed meal at Tangata! There was very little tuna in the tartare! The short rib was formed into a square and too fatty and just warm! The dessert was a beer root beer float, awful! I love almost any dessert and didn;t eat mine!"
