TanakaSan is a modern American Asian restaurant. Eric Tanaka's background as a Japanese-American kid growing up in LA's melting pot sets the tone for our playful menu. This is the food that satisfies our cravings. We hope you enjoy eating it as much as we enjoy cooking it.

  • "Went to Tanaka San for Ramen. Ramen was chicken broth and lots of noodles. Not the more traditional pork broth. Good but a bit salty. Also had wings which I thought were very good but also salty. Waiter went past our table twice with our food including serving it to an adjacent table once. He was unapologetic but this really irks me when my food had sat at another table for a short time before being brought to us. We were also sat near the door so the wind blew in each time door was opened to outdoor seating. Also in main flow of people and adjacent to bar so very noisy. Looking up to the balcony you say a bunch of butts on barstools. While I suppose it is kinda hip and near Amazon, I would prefer to go to Isakaya or Kushibar anyday."

  • "server was great, (service 2 stars because of the slow, sloow, slooow delivery of the entree) she salvaged an otherwise unremarkable experience. As usual the wings were good, the osaka pancake surprisingly good. coconut beef OK, ribs dry and well, just dry. appetizers came out quickly, entrees took forever. All at the table agreed the only reason to come back was for the wings and a beer (and the personality of the server). At 7:30 on Friday night the place seemed to be emptying out... usually not a good sign."

  • "A friend from out of town and I had lunch here last Saturday - I had never heard of TanakaSan before but a foodie friend of hers recommended it. The twice-fried chicken wings were the highlight and the eggplant plate lunch also was tasty. The loco moco came with two beef patties covered in a curry-ish sauce over white rice. One of the beef patties was undercooked inside and the server ended up taking it off of our bill (which was an unexpected but nice gesture). The sauce was pretty good but there wasn't enough of it to mix into all of the rice. "

  • "Another fine effort from Tom Douglas restaurants. Headed by Eric Tanaka you know you are going to get interesting offerings, reasonable prices, and (mostly) professional service. Situated in the Via6 condos this is an interesting placement for one of his restaurants, but makes perfect sense when you see the construction going on across the street where Amazon is building their HQ."

  • "menus on table were stained, wrinkled. silverware spotted and crusty. service was timely and good at clearing plates and empty glasses. wings were great, pork shoulder was tender. hamachi fabulous, dungeness crab / pea "soup" special looked great but didn't deliver on flavor, hanger steak over cooked. wish I lived in the building, love the retail - grocery area."

  • "Colleagues and I went to TanakaSan for the first time on Monday evening and loved the vibe of the place right from the get go - hadn't been to the Assembly Hall before and I was impressed with the concept. I'm not typically a huge Asian food fan, but this experience was fantastic. We all shared several different items and my favorites included the rice cakes - simple yet delicious, the Osaka pancake - great blend of multiple flavors and the spare ribs - meaty and flavorful. Chef Brian did a great job for us and we will be back."

  • "I went for Seattle restaurant week. It was a great deal on the amount of food we got for the price, but I was more interested in other items on the menu. Everything seemed a little bland, it just needed a kick up in the flavor. For service we knew it was busy for a weekday lunch but we sat at our table for over 5 minutes without anyone greeting us or providing us with menues or water. The atmosphere and design was great. I found myself more concerned with the other little shops in the building than with my own dish in front of me. "

  • "Went here during seattle restaurant week to just try out another of Tom Douglas"s gems. Loved everything we had at our table. The coconut beef is incredible so much that the morning after my husband and I were fighting over the leftovers!!! Seared tuna, dungeness apple salad, and spare ribs all were great. Best part, they had the coconut cream pie on desert menu !!"

  • "First time trying this restaurant and it was a great surprise. So good I went back with my husband a couple days later. It was Dine around Seattle and I wanted him to try it too. Particular note was the mint salad with edamame beans. Their sauces tableside are great additions to any meal. The best part of the three part meal was that dessert was offered and I chose the coconut creme pie, a staple for any Tom Douglas foodie, but still I order it every time I can. I would definitely try this for happy hour but the bar seems small so I'll see how that works out. Fun place for a date night for sure."

  • "We went during Restaurant Week to try a new restaurant and we had no expectations beyond the fact that this is a Tom Douglas restaurant. The meal started out well as the appetizers were good. We both had ordered the hanger steak so when that arrived we expected something really good but the steak was not hot and the vegetables were about 1/2 onion to 1/2 asparagus which is just too much onion. The steak was very chewy and lacked any sort of flavor so we had that boxed and brought it home for our dogs. The coconut cream pie for desert was flavorless and the crust was mediocre. I told the waiter that I ate better at home while in out minds was the fact that we would not come back to this restaurant."

  • "We had the 3 course Seattle Restaurant Week menu and were pleased with the food. The portion sizes were a bit small and if we hadn't ordered a side of fries and eaten the giant coconut cream pie for dessert, we would have left hungry. Lots of fun cocktails on the menu - I enjoyed my Tamarindo and am looking forward to coming back in the summer to try a sake slushie. The downside - the space is very uncomfortable. The chairs are metal and were FREEZING and very hard and uncomfortable. It is also a "green building" so the server explained that they have no control over the heating/cooling. That evening it was very cold inside and there was a major draft. We asked to be moved and the server told us were were not the only ones to ask. Too bad."

  • "We're visiting from Los Angeles, and coming from a place with so much great restaurants, Tanakasan is a great find in the city if Seattle. Love the marinated eggplant, although it's a cold dish, the favors blend into the eggplant. It's a must to order the Tanakasan Ramen#3, we shared the ramen since we ordered 4 more other dishes. Seared Hamachi, shrimp and duck wontons, spare ribs were flavorful. Our dining experience is awesome and will definitely recommend this place."

  • "I've never had okonomiyaki outside of Osaka, so I have no comparison except the real thing. Erik Tanaka's "Osaka pancake" is not authentic, but dare I say it - it is BETTER than the real thing. I love the not-so-subtle tweaks he's put on every item in the menu. Don't go to this restaurant expecting authentic Asian cuisine, you'll go away confused. Just get ready for a great meal."

  • "This was my second visit to Tanaka-san and took my daughter for a special father-daughter lunch after buying her a prom dress. We're both Asian food-ophiles and really enjoy the eclectic flavors and ingredients that Tanaka-san brings to the menu. We went for the fresh and varied non-alcoholic drink options, her's being a fruit juice-wheatgrass blend that was very refreshing. I really enjoyed the Yazu Mizu shiso drink. Her coconut beef over rice with the ginger-sambal was outstanding and hit the spot. I ordered the pork broth ramen and a side of garlic sauteed Chinese broccoli, both of which were winners. The lunch time crowd was quiet on the weekend and not overly busy. I want to catch the outside dining in the warm months ahead."

  • "Wonderful take on Japanese in a completely fresh way. Think about herbal and fruit infusions you can use flavor your own warm sake. Beautiful and yummy. Imagine yellowy yuzu pudding cake with shiso flavored whipped cream and a rosy rhubarb relish all on one dessert plate. Beautiful, delicious. Or a new approach to ikonomiyaki - a small pancake with tiny shrimp, bonito flakes and lovely mayo sauce. And so it goes..."

  • "Lots of things to try, making our decisions harder. The oysters were excellent as was the beef brisket bowl. This restaurant is really large . . . and hard floors, so it is not intimate. Has a nice outdoor cafe section which will be great in the summer. Excellent location."

  • "Outstanding staff, interesting menu, great drinks and a very nice $$ value. The place was packed at 7:20 on a Friday, but they found us a table without delay (our reservation was for 7:45). Fun place to work through the menu - the staff were very informative and interested in our dining experience. Highly recommend the Sake slushy drinks. Clean surroundings, quick service, couldn't ask for more."
