TamarindBest Indian restaurant in NYCWe have visited Tamarind (both locations) many times and have never been disappointed. Several years ago I had to be in the city for only half a day, but I made sure my time there included an opportunity to eat at Tamarind. That evening I arrived just as they opened and received a warm welcome. The visit 5/20/13 was no exception. We had eaten at Tamarind Tribeca on the 19th and one of the staff working at the 22nd Street location last night recognized us and came over to the table. He also spoke to us on the way out. The owner of the restaurant also stopped by our table to greet us.

The food is indeed outstanding. We were in India recently, and the food at Tamarind is not authentic home cooking, but it's like what one gets in an array (and India DOES have an array) of restaurants, hotels, and so forth--so for us, it had a fine flash-back-to-India quality. Also: it is a restaurant with excellent vibes. We and everyone seem to be having a good time. People talk to each other. One sees (in our case, sits next to) celebrities sometimes. The service is attentive but not rushed. The owner is there every evening greeting patrons and overseeing the operation. The food quality is consistent and flavours are outstanding. The service is exceptional and alwsys with a smile. This is not your neighborhood take out place, it has a real tandoor oven producing a juicy mixed grill and perfectly baked naan bread. The lamb in the rogan josh melted in your mouth - no overcooking here!
So that was the food, the service is what takes the experience over the top. Upon arrival, warm towels are brought to the table to clean your hands. Water is presented and refilled. Service is done with the diners in mind (i.e. no reaching over people, served from the left side at an angle as to not disturb you). When your curry and rice is brought to the table, the wait staff portions some out onto your plate for you. We ended up staying over 3 hours because not only was the food beautifully presented with a wide variety of exquisite flavors ranging from light;y spiced to super spicy, but also the service was impeccable without being intrusive. Several times we asked if they needed our table and they graciously responded, "no rush, enjoy!"
