A word from Tamarind of London
Tamarind of London is the sister to Tamarind restaurant in Great Britain, which has received the Michelin star for each of the past 12 years. The restaurant is guided by a philosophy that seeks to blend cultural authenticity with mainstream accessibility.
The kitchen team is being lead by Alfred Prasad, whose 12-year Michelin Star legacy at Tamarind in the UK has set the standard for elevated Indian dining experience.
The menu includes food from the varied regions of India, highlighting the flavors and techniques that make each region unique.
The restaurant includes an airy bar and patio, serving a full range of hand-crafted creative cocktails and an innovative lunch menu highlighting the signature "Naanwich."

  • "Looking for something different without having to drive too far, on a Saturday night, we were surprised to be able to book a table here at the last minute. Glad we did. The food was truly outstanding: Indian fusion that we have not encountered before. Highly recommend the sea bass and the avocado "raita" which is more like Indian guacamole. Everyone should try the naan, which is light and wispy and packed with flavor."

  • "we got some friends for lunch as we have had dinner here on previous occasions. For one of our friends this was the 1st Indian meal and she loved it. we all ordered Thali (platter) and the food was great, especially the Chicken curry. Eggplant was great too. Food was not creamy like many Indian diners, not spicy and was tasty. Service can be better - had no lunch menu card which was a surprise!"

  • "I ate at Tamarind in Mayfair and loved it, so I was happy to find they had a restaurant here in Newport. One of our party is allergic to garlic. We asked the waiter what they had without garlic. He asked the chef. We were told all they had was steamed vegetables and rice. Everything has garlic and is marinated ahead of time. Then someone came and said he would make her a piece of fish. After a while, the waiter came back and said he changed his mind! When our food came, they forgot my sea bass, one other entree and the nan. We never got any nan until the meal was almost over and then they brought garlic! Our water glasses were never refilled. The food we did get was delicious (recommend the baby eggplant). We would not go back."

  • "Tried this place for OC Restaurant Week. It was at the end of a long and dark drive from the South Bay. The restaurant itself was kinda dark inside and seemed small, until I saw the patio area which wasn't being used that night. The menu was a set course of several of their more popular items. They were out of my choice for dessert, however. All the food was good and I went away satisfied. Due to the distance, this would not be my first choice of Indian places to go, but it is a decent one."

  • "It was raining and the place was hopping. When we arrive for our 8:15 reservation, we were informed they were running behind and asked us to wait at the bar; owner would come get us. At 8:30 I went to the check in station. We were no where to be found- they had forgotten us. The owner seated us at the next table up. The food was excellent, and the bartender showed we a new, and delicious, Manhattan recipe. What's not to like!?"

  • "So disappointing... The maitre d' was lovely and tried to get us the best table possible, but after that, everything varied from below average to terrible. Literally everything - the TABLE was even screwed up - the legs were bolted to the floor in a way that made it impossible for 2/4 in our party to sit properly. Our waiter was nice, but service was awkward and unpolished, e.g. he stammered around trying to explain to us that they used to give away free chips and chutney as a starter, but they don't any more, but he could get them for us if we wanted, but they weren't free. The food was average & delivery was slow, which for $50/person (not including drinks) is unacceptable. Not going back sadly..."

  • "This is my second time dining at Tamarind of London and unlike the first visit we didn't have a great experience. The table was next to the bar so ambience was less than ideal, our waiter was out of sync and slow for everything (water, drinks and taking our order). Also, I asked him THREE times to turn the heater above my wife off or down and he never bothered. I asked for some help from our waiter regarding recomendations to share on our double date. None of us were familiar with Indian food. He made a couple unenthusiastic recomendations but basically ordered a bunch of the same thing. He didn't seem to know the menu at all and frankly seemed uninterested in even being our waiter. Very dissapointing experience!"

  • "I was looking forward to dinning at Tamarind considering their reputation in London, but had some worries after reading some reviews. Well let my feedback be viewed as truth. Tamarind was awful. Once seated we waited 20 minutes to receive a drink. Our table of 7 had to share 1 menu despite multiple asks for more menu's. Once our order was in, there was a 45 minute wait for our apps where meanwhile, they filled our water once and we had to chase down waiters for Naan bread. After the 1st course another 45 minute wait for our entree. We all ordered from a pre-fixed menu with no picky requests so the delay baffled me. The restaurant manager saw this happened & only till we were out the door was there a forced apology. Do not waste your time."

  • "This was the third time I have eaten at Tamarind of London and although I was looking forward to trying it again, what a huge disappointment! The service was slow and unprofessional. An item that we ordered never appeared, the server spooned through my dinner before serving it to try to figure out what it was, one member of our party was not served with the other 3, and when they ran out of the dessert 2 of us ordered we were told that the chef would not allow any substitutions but we had to have the other "restaurant week" dessert like it or not. The restaurant week menu was also horribly over priced for what it was and the food was not inspired or tasty. I miss Chakra - I think I will not go back here a 4th time!"

  • "The food was nice and ambiance was great as always but one thing the whole group did not like. May be it is very small matter but sometimes customers don't like it. 1. We all ordered Thali and generally the food is more than enough. One of us wanted more Nan so he ordered one Roti. We think that should not be charged extra and it should be included with the Thali Meal. May be that's how you have set it up. 2. We were sure that we ordered 5 Large beers and not 6 as charged on our bill. This could be a genuine mistake by the server. 3. Some of us are in food business and just to let you know that these small things can sometimes hurt your business."

  • "My husband and I love Indian food and have dined here once before and were pleased, so we decided to make reservations for Valentine's day. The tables were all crammed together, we sat at our table for more than 30 mins without even being acknowledged, the portions were tiny and lacking flavor, and our bill came out to over $200 for 2!! The waiter knew nothing about the menu so he had to go get his supervisor to explain several items to us. We even offered our naan to another couple that we noticed had also been completely ignored for over 40 mins. We are very disappointed and I doubt we will be visiting again."

  • "My husband and I went to Tamarind of London for Valentine's Day and had a fabulous meal. He loves Indian food so I thought I'd surprise him by having Valentine's Day dinner at this restaurant. For this occasion, Tamarind of London had a prix fixe 5 course meal. Everything we ordered was fabulous. I especially enjoyed the dessert (one was like a fried chocolate dumpling)!"

  • "We had a great dinner and excellent service. This was our first time here. When we checked in with the hostess we didn't get a good table and she was not being very helpful either. Then a server, Christian, was the one who handled the situation really well and arranged with the hostess to get us a better booth in his area!! The hostess never even bothered to handle this personally with us. That was not good. Christian was a wonderful server and took excellent care even though I had not told them that is was our anniversary dinner. I would definitely go there again while visiting the area."

  • "We were there on a Sunday night and chose the "restaurant week" fixed menu. Preparation was outstanding, quality ingredients. They didn't charge for extra rice and extra dal. However, {and this may be because we ordered the fixed menu} it was not innovative (or very spicy) like I expected from a high end Indian restaurant touting the words "of London". I expected exquisite and inventive Indian dishes like those that I had in Chutney Mary's in London. But lets not forget that this is Southern California after all and simply having an Indian restaurant that serves high quality classic Indian food is already a huge improvement from just a few years ago."

  • "Considering its Michelin-starred flagship in London, I expected the Newport Beach location to be at least favorably impressive. Unfortunately, I left extremely disappointed, as did all other members in my party of four. Other than the two appetizers, which were actually quite good, the food was fair at best. Everything was unevenly heated, as if some dishes had sat under a heat lamp while others were prepared, and portions were on the small side. Service was also very week. We waited 20 minutes to be asked what wine we wanted, and when the appetizer plates were removed from the table most knives and forks were whisked away too - never to be seen again until after entrees arrived and we finally flagged someone down. Will not be returning."

  • "My father and I came here for the Newport Restaurant Week tasting menu. We were the first to have the prefix menu. The food was great and allowed us to experience a broad taste of the main menu. The prefix pricing afforded us the meal. The server, Chachandra was a wonderfully beautiful, professional young woman. Overall, a great experience."

Only had two choices for beer from the bar and no Seagram's to make a 7/7. You better have a fully stocked bar when you want to compete at this level. The staff were very nice."

Although the food is different from traditional Indian or Pakistani restaurants, in my opinion the fusion elements made it very appealing. In particular, the seafood (the garlic shrimp and the tandoori sea bass) were very good."

  • "Sad to report that Tamarind of London is trending down on food and service. The wait staff is far less professional than they were a year ago and everyting that comes out of the kitchen seems (compared to a year ago) poorly prepared and poorly presented. And neither the revised wine list nor menu seem to be have been well thought out. Many appetizers read like main courses and many "main courses" are meager sharing dishes. The chicketn tikka masala was a few pieces of (what seemed like) bland boiled chicken dunked underneath a thin tomotao sauce. The prawn main course was a few measely pieces of overcooked shrimp again "dunked" in a swimming pool of unappetizing sauce. Even the breads were lacking from prior efforts. Needs a major reboot."
