Tamarind of London is the sister to Tamarind restaurant in Great Britain, which has received the Michelin star for each of the past 12 years. The restaurant is guided by a philosophy that seeks to blend cultural authenticity with mainstream accessibility.

The kitchen team is being lead by Alfred Prasad, whose 12-year Michelin Star legacy at Tamarind in the UK has set the standard for elevated Indian dining experience.The menu includes food from the varied regions of India, highlighting the flavors and techniques that make each region unique.
The restaurant includes an airy bar and patio, serving a full range of hand-crafted creative cocktails.

  • "Overpriced food can be overlooked for the location but service was atrocious. 6 pm Monday, only 3 tables were occupied during our entire stay. After our drinks were delivered, a bus boy wiped out table, that was odd. Nobody else had sat there for the day since they opened at 5:00. Wait staff checked in on us once after our food was delivered, okay that's great and then it went downhill. The bus boy tried to box our leftovers while stacking plates, nearly knocking the bus tray over with weight on 1 side. Then he confused the leftovers for each person. We ordered dessert and 3 coffees. Water and coffee never refilled when he brought us the check or after we paid bill. We lingered another 20 min after that with no refills."

  • "We had Sunday lunch which is not the best time of the day to eat at Tamarind. Our waiter was fantastic, the chicken marsala we had needed to be cooked longer. Perhaps dinner it would have been fantastic. Very Expensive for lunch as they use the Dinner Menu."

  • "We tried something new for my son's 21st birthday so we headed to Tamarind of London almost to Laguna Beach. The small plate scallops and goat cheese nan were great-tasty and different. The shrimp curry and chicken tikka were expensive and unspectacular. I had to flag the waiter to order and to get the check. They brought a small dessert for the birthday boy which was nice. For the price and the caliber of food, I couldn't recommend it for Indian food in the OC."

  • "I have been to Tamarind on many occasions. Recently i i read an article in OC MOM dining section, it was an excellent article which pretty much covered everything about the restaurant. It is very rare that such a high end ethnic restaurant is in OC. I would expect Tamarind to be in LA, NY or Vegas. Anyways its great for me that they decided to open in Newport, i absolutely love each and everything about this restaurant the food is to die for they are known for their lamb chops and sea bass which is from New Zealand and they make it in their clay oven in an open kitchen. Cant ask for more."

  • "I had probably had one of my best meals here. I was referred here by a friend the interiors and the decor were amazing as expected. But the food is to die for absolutely phenomenal. This is the only place in OC i have found which serves authentic indian food rest are all water down. The service was also very good. I will be a regular."

  • "Tamarind of London has amazing Indian food. Seabass is a wonderfully flavorful dish. Tikka Masala is yummy. Side dishes are great and I especially liked the creamy spinach and the okra dish. We highly recommend this Indian restaurant to everyone. It has a stadium type kitchen so you can watch the Tandoori cooking."

  • "Rogan josh very tough and flavorless. Yellow lentils had absolutely no taste. This was the pattern of the whole meal. It's a shame because we love Indian food, have had it around the world, even at Tamarand in London which was yummy. Much better Indian restaurants in O. C. We won't recommend or be back."

  • "I have travelled multiple times to several areas in India and was looking forward to great Indian dishes. This was far from any normal Indian cuisine. It looked like California food made to look Indian. But even the spices and the sauces lacked flavor. A basic dish such as vegetables looked like it was made in a school cafetaria. I lived in the 80's in London and it reminded me of the then prevailing craving for grease and bland food. (Nowadays one eats better in London)"

  • "This was my second time dining at Tamarind my first experience was excellent so i was hoping they would be able to keep up the first amazing experience. I got the Kamalas Kiss to start with and it was really nice maybe they could have put more vodka in it. My server got me these amazing lentil chips to start with along with 3 dipping sauces this was similar to a Mexican restaurant setting. I got the prawn curry and sea scallops for my main course they were both excellent. The server was great too however both the times i came in the restaurant was about half full so I'm hoping they keep up with the service on busy nights too."

  • "I had never heard of this place and the host told me they have been here for over two years now. I am so glad i stumbled upon this place thanks to starbucks. Our server was extremely knowledgable about the cusine and he recommend the grilled prawns they came out great supposedly they are cooked in a oven at 900F. I had the server take care of the main course too he got me a lamb dish and a yellow lentil both were great. This is my new favorite restaurant in OC. I will be back soon."

  • "I had heard a lot about this place and i finally decided to give it a try. It was pretty quiet when we came in and we were seated right away. I got the tower of London to start with and it was right on point. Got the lamb chops to start with and had the eggplant and a chicken dish for the mean everything was great. The Garlic Naan came later it was to die for. This is my new favorite place in OC."

  • "Wife and I love Indian food, but since moving to San Clemente don't have options. Trying to NOT have another burger-taco-steak, we drove up to Tamarind, hoping the mixed reviews were a result of either native Indian people with high expectations (seemed to be the case) or people who don't eat Indian food. Unfortunately, no. The place is cool. Service is...off. Menu is a la carte, so or 2 people was $150. Food didn't have a lot of flavor, but the fish was at least cooked perfectly. Honestly, the hole in the wall across from the Kaiser on Sand Canyon is a WHOLE lot better. Served on steam tables with no ambiance, but at least tastes better than Trader Joe's, which cannot be said for Tamarind."

  • "Food very over priced for what you get .. $26 or more for a small handful of chicken or fish. Chicken masala tiki was terrible with dark meat ... Rice costs 3 dollars for a thimble full and drinks were way overpriced and had little alcohol. They even tried to rip us off and charge more than the menu price for wine and more at the table for the same drink as the bar. The manager took of the charge but was very combative. Terrible experience. Took another friend out the next night to wild fish and had a polar opposite experience. Save you dollars and go elsewhere."

  • "We have been here a number of times in the past, so we expected a really good meal. We got a terrible meal. The restaurant was virtually empty on a Friday night so we should have suspected something.I don't know if the chef has been changed or their protocol has, but the dishes we had,which we had had another time were awful. The tasted nothing like what they tasted like previously. My recommendation is to avoid Tamarind of London at all costs. They seem to be on a downhill spiral and if things don't change,including the outrageous prices for poor food, they will close."

  • "We really enjoy Indian food, which I also often cook myself. This is second time here and both times have felt it is a bit watered down Indian. The Lamb Rogan Josh was tasty, the chicken dishes are very bland and not as nuanced as authentic Indian dishes are. The Naan was excellent! I do know that Tamarind in London is very good and highly regarded. Not sure what happened when this restaurant crossed "the Pond"! I've given it two tries and sadly not impressed. It is a hip spot, just not "Indian" enough for me!"

  • "The food was unbelievably ordinary, extremely expensive, and portions were half a bite size! We were 4 people who spent 60 dollars on 3 appetizers and each of us got 3 small bites. Had the bites been great, we would not have minded the price, but, the food was very very ordinary! Highly not recpmmended unless you are just looking for a decent ambience."

  • "We had high expectations for our dining experience as all 4 of us had eaten at Tamarind in London. Unfortunately the Newport branch did not live up to the London restaurant. While the food was good, it wasn't exceptional as we had expected. Also several of the entrees we ordered didn't arrive as ordered. I will say the chef tried to compensate by sending out the shrimp we ordered and removed the cost of the incorrect entrée."

  • "Usually have our favorite female server who's name escapes me now. She is friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and always has perfect timing. Our server on 6-29 (party of 5) needs some more training. He had horrible timing, not friendly, not knowledgeable and forgot to bring my brother another beverage. Appetizers were cold (scallops), naan was delicious and entrées were light on protein. Everyone kept swimming their spoon around in the sauce for that last piece of chicken. Tasty sauce but where is the protein??"

  • "There are so many delectable options, this is a great place to go with a group so you can try lots of things. The potato platter was good but the aloo gobi was outstanding. The date naan was too much like dessert; the garlic naan was wonderful. You have to try the smoked eggplant; it's amazing. You can get sea bass everywhere but the preparation of this fish is melt-in-your- mouth delicious. Our expectations were high and we were not disappointed."

  • "Have dined at Tamarind in Newport Beach 3 times previously as well as the first restaurant in London. This location seems to have finally come up to the standards of the London venue. Food was great and spicy enough, service fine--not intrusive, but efficient. Wine list is interesting and varied and there are Indian beers as well. It is quite easy to eat all vegetarian here and be satisfied as some of the dishes such as the vegetable Korma and the dal Makhani are quite rich. The setting is sleek and attractive. Overall a great experience."

  • "Shame: - this neat Indian Restaurant - gently spiced fine food - elegant portions - trendy setting - revisits finer elements of menu searching magic spot - Doesn't everyone know a fundamental compliment of Indian Food is Beer, an important component? - Sadly beer list stinks. It is an American Age of micro brews, solid flavor & beer brewed by monks abounds - what better compliment than a finely cooked curry? Yet Tamrind employs a Sommelier - adds a better wine list than before - My advice - enjoy fine food, usually very attentive service & to the manager - don't ever let customers walk as happened Sunday Night beside our table when customer walked after being left unattended! market your restaurant Your Best Customer"

  • "My sister and I are not Indian food lovers..really...BUT Tamarind changed our minds forever!! No, it doesn't smell like a curry house. Cocktails were a delight. Chilean wine option not that great. Our favorites: Butter Chicken (not on the menu but they have it), Okras, naan & scallops. Lamb was a bit dry and over cooked. Instead of tortilla chips & guac and salsa, you get these delicious homemade lentil chips. They are 1000x better than tortilla chips! The 3 dips that complement the lentil chips were tamarind chutney, cilantro chutney and salsa. My favorite was the tamarind sauce. I haven't developed a taste for Indian desserts just yet but we did have 4 different kinds. My preference are the savory dishes for now. You gotta try!"

  • "We love quality Indian food, so when relatives came into town we couldn't wait to try Tamarind of London. The food, service, and ambience were excellent. The waiter, pastry chef, hostess, and other staff were attentive and professional. The Rogan Josh and dahl had a depth of flavor that was extraordinary! None of the dishes were greasy and they were all spiced carefully (not with a heavy hand). As a group we shared several dishes and enjoyed them all. Each had distinctive flavors that complemented one another. As we left, we were told there are plans to open to open additional restaurants in Beverly Hills and San Francisco. Looking forward to trying them out."

  • "We had a great time at Tamarind. The valet is convenient, our table was ready for us, and the service was attentive. The restaurant is divided into 2 seating areas by a great bar (also space to dine), one side is by the open patio and the other side shows the kitchen and has booth seating. The dinner was delicious. We even ordered two things that were not on the menu (a salad and the butter chicken curry). The naan breads are the best we have ever had. Highly recommend visiting, the food is outstanding."
