Diner Reviews
  • "I took my out of town guests here after enjoying cocktails and appetizers here before but was very disappointed with our meals. All of us felt our meals were too salty. My husband joked his pork shank was good but it was so salty it was going to give him a heart attack. I had the scallops and the sauce was so salty I could not eat it. I should have sent mine back but I did voice my concerns to the hostess. I have never had such salty food anywhere. My brother had the Korean chicken ...he always eats everything but left half his meal although he said it was good. The Edanamee, sushi and cocktails were good. For the price, I could not recommend this restaurant and I will not eat there again. I was embarrassed I brought my guests here."

  • "My husband and I had dinner at tamari during restaurant week. We loved each of the three courses & our wine selection was great too! Looking forward to visiting again & trying some different items from the menu."

  • "Great place. Best sushi in Pittsburgh. Love that it has local brewery beers on tap"

  • "The term Latin-inspired always puzzled me so I had to check out Tamari for myself. I went during Pittsburgh restaurant week and had one of the best tasting meals ever in Pittsburgh. The meal started with an empanada followed by a summer maki roll with tuna nd mango, and finally sea bass. Delicious food and friendly attentive staff."

  • "Tamari is excellent with its combination of Asian-Latin foods. Bacon-quail egg robata is superb. Our waitstaff was very attentive, patient, and explained everything to us."

  • "THis is the second time we have been to Tamari together and both times have set at the chef's table with a view into the kitchen. To say that it was fun is an understatement. The kitchen staff was engaging, their food was even better - from the sushi to the muscles to the lobster mac n cheese - worth the price of admission! The service was prompt, friendly and efficient without being overbearing - turned a great night into a very romantic night... We will be back - over and over again. Thanks guys!"

  • "Great place to get various appetizers to make up a dinner. the Robata grill sampler is great! Good people watching."

  • "Food was excellent as usual. Service was great, Chris the bartender could not have been nicer or more accommodating! Had a wonderful time, always look forward to going back to this Lawernceville restaurant or the newer one in Warrendale. Never been disappointed!"

  • "Tamari is one of our favorites, but I was disappointed with Open Table service. We were given a choice of either 5:30 or 8:00 on a Monday night for 2 people. We got there at 5:30 and the restaurant was barely occupied and was never more than half full the entire time we were there. We would have much preferred a 7:30 seating that was clearly available. I would recommend the restaurant, but not Open Table."

  • "I made a reservation for my birthday, (I like to try places I haven't yet gotten a chance to go to) and it was the best decision I have ever made! It can be a challenge sometimes to find a place with a diverse menu for me to choose from but with this menu I had a hard time deciding what to get! Both my partner and I were blown away by each course, (the mussels were my favorite). Great portion sizes, excellent plating, and outstanding flavor. I can't wait to get back! Best dining experience in Pittsburgh!"

  • "I had a wonderful experience for dinner. The sushi was outstanding and the best spicy tuna roll I've ever had. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and the service was great. I will certainly be back."

  • "The lobster mac-n-cheese was too rich with cheese, very little lobster. Claimed that claw meat was mixed in - really? My wife's flank steak was mediocre at best. Over-priced for dishes that were not great. Will likely not visit again."

  • "Our second experience at Tamari was not as good as our first (in February.) Service was iffy, we waited a long time for our drinks...they came after the forst 2 courses. I also hate when tapas places bring more than one at a time. If we are sharing, we only need one at a time, please. Also the food did not seem to have the bright flavors we remembered. The best item was the Angry Lobster Roll, which was delicious."

  • "Some members of our party liked the old tapas oriented menu but the selections were excellent. The portion sizes varied--the flank steak entree was much larger than others. But all were prepared very well and were extremely tasty. The wait staff was attentive, knowledgable and very helpful."

  • "We have dined at Tamari over the years morning (Sunday brunch) and various times in afternoon and evening, as well as special tasting events; and always enjoyed delicious food, well made cocktails and great service. Hats off to Allen and his staff ! !"

  • "Much quieter on Sunday evening despite outdoor seating completely full. Food is always outstanding, fun drinks, everyone is friendly. Hadn't been for a while but need to start going back again. Never disappointed."

  • "Do not bother using open table to book, you still must call to confirm, you could just call initially to book, annoying."
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "The slight changes to the shrimp tacos didn't diminish their flavor... these are amazing, with a homemade tortilla, sriracha foam, and tasty guacamole. We also loved the mole quesadilla and, as usual, the lobster mac & cheese. I've never tried something I don't like at Tamari!"

  • "Food is always reliable and the server we had was awesome! Attention to every request and monitored our needs nicely throughout. Always enjoy my dining experience here and their attempt to meet dietary restrictions/preferences - i.e. gluten free."

  • "I made an online reservation for a table for the five members of my family to celebrate my son's graduation, and while I couldn't get the time we wanted, I figured it was worth it to ensure that we had a nice table. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed to find that we were seated at the back of the sushi bar section, an area that turned out to be very chaotic and noisy, and a real comedown from the much nicer upstairs section. It struck me that we would have been better off just showing up at the time we had wanted to be there anyway, and waiting for a table to open up, since i can't imagine anyone choosing to sit where we were placed. For a very expensive meal, this wasn't a terribly pleasant experience."

  • "The family celebrated my son's graduation from high school here and had a fabulous meal. My 18 year-old picked this restaurant based on good memories from about four years ago when my husband and I had celebrated our anniversary here. Our server was well versed in every aspect of our meal including a "strong" cocktail for my husband. Have the pork shank! I will be returning sooner than another four years. Thank you for an awesome meal."

  • "The ambiance and autmosphere were excellent. I would certainly recommend ordering the fish but not the steak. I had calamari and sushi and they were great. I would go back to Tamari for its Sushi. But my date's steak was a bit too tender and the potatos didn't seem fresh. "

  • "I prefer the lunch menu over the dinner menu. You can choose a few smaller portion items and smaple each one. I wish you offered that for dinner."
    Dined on 5/27/2014
  • "We had great service, but were both ill about an hour after leaving. Not sure I would go back other than for outdoor drinks. Has potential, but I'm scared off since both of us had sour stomachs. "

  • "we had a great time! too bad there was jalapeño all over my margarita glass, which ended up in my eye… otherwise it was great! food was excellent!"

  • "We went on a beautiful Friday evening. I've been here before but when requested outdoor seating realized there was an awesome backyard deck with great views of the city. This place isn't inexpensive but the food was fantastic and service was great. I would recommend making reservations if possible."

  • "It's really a 4.5 but that's not a choice. We dined in the outdoor garden. There is a bit of street noise (Butler is busy) but it wasn't too much for conversation. The food was interesting and delicious. We had the grilled escarole, the quesadillas and the robota sampler. It was all delicious-- can't choose a favorite. Service was good though the waitress seemed busy handling the whole garden area. No complaints though-- she was knowledgeable and attentive enough. Try it--if you like food you won't be disappointed."

  • "we were visiting Pittsburgh, came across Tamari. Had a wonderful time. Jalapeneo margarita was great. We had several small plates. Lobster, calamari, salmon roll all were excellent. "

  • "Normally the dinner entrees are fantastic. Apparently they changed the menu options recently, and I tried the Flank Steak with a side of mushrooms instead of the potato confit. Unfortunately the steak was very chewy, and the tomato sauce/relish that it was served with simply didn't blend well. Being a $26 meal, I think that they could've managed a better cut of beef. Everything else we had was great though. "

  • "The food here is just too good, was trying to come here for a long time but always ended up somewhere else. Went with my husband on his birthday and the food was good, service was amazing and the dessert is a must try. Will definitely come bk soon :)"

  • "Roger Li is so innovative and never fears to change his menu regularly. We had the old standby clams.ri, but with a lovely new tomato base sauce. The beans, kale and asparagus was enhanced with smoky bacon...excellent new addition. The mole on the chicken quesadilla was awesome with hints if cinnamon, allspice and cloves..not to be missed. Sorry my appetite could not include more!"

  • "Service at Tamari is great. The muscles are outstanding and you can't go wrong with their sushi. Also love their small plates. Be sure to try the Tamari-tini or any other cocktail. Romantic and swanky setting. Will be back soon!!!"

  • "I've been here on several occasions now, and have never been anything less than impressed. The food is incredible, some of the best to be had in the 'burgh. Their cocktails are great, and some change seasonally as well, giving you new options (try 'House of the Rising Sun'...I think that one's a mainstay...basil in a drink, mmm!) The staff is very attentive, as an example, my date dropped her knife, and within 30 seconds, the owner came around from the kitchen with a new knife on a platter for her. He was able to tell which utensil to bring by the sound it made hitting the floor...talk about being an attentive host! Anyway, if you've never tried it I highly encourage you do, you won't be disappointed!"

  • "Attentive wait staff, food prepared creatively and was very flavorful. Reasonable corkage fee. We sat outside, and there was sufficient cover over the patio so we were comfortable. The larger menu wasn't available, ad we couldn't order some of our favorites. However, the food we had was flavorful and well done. We will be back!"

  • "I really don't like seafood, and the few times I've tried sushi in the past have been less-than-pleasant. We tried a bunch of different small plates from the tapas menu and loved everything that came to the table - even stuff that I know I normally hate, like tuna tartare. The food is so good here that it makes me like things I'd never eat otherwise. The service was also really nice - attentive but not intrusive. Our waiter was extremely professional. The evening was so enjoyable - we'll definitely be back."

  • "Everything single thing we ordered--from the wine to the small plates to entre was so flavorful and thoughtfully prepared. We were unrushed, though it took us time to settle in and make decisions. Our questions were answered with friendliness and service was attentive. You have to try: grilled quail eggs, grilled romaine salad, tuna tacos, chorizo tacos, asian sea bass,...I have to go back to try many other interesting looking offerings."

  • "This is a favorite restaurant of ours. The services is impeccable, the wait staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and the food is awesome! One really cool thing about it is that there are mostly small plates for sharing, so you come away from the meal satisfied but not stuffed to the brim and also this way you get to sample a lot more funky dishes. Love it. Can't wait to go back."
