Tam O'ShanterGood Food, Great StaffHad never been to the Tam even though I'd known about it for years. I've been missing out. Everyone from the bartenders to the matre 'd to the waiters and bus boys were all friendly to downright fun. The food is not "cheap date" priced, but it is not the sticker shock you get at some of the Hot Spots. The bar is also not as expensive as many places, even less than expected! The food is very good, and much of what you expect from what is primarily a steakhouse/Prime Rib joint, but a few tasty surprises and a good time had by everyone at my table. We were celebrating a birthday and not only did our server wish the recipient a happy birthday but other staff welcomed us and wished us a good evening and gave birthday wishes to the guest of honor. That makes a person really enjoy the atmosphere and service that Lawry's Restaurants have continuously given and deserve their great reputation. Our server was informative and very gracious and accommodating. Food, as always, was delicious. They were very nice and didn't tell us until 10PM, though. It's always surprising in a great metropolis when you have to break up a vibrant conversation and leave when the night is barely started. We're originally from NYC, the city that famously never sleeps, and our guest was from Belgium. In Europe in general, dinner starts at 7PM and lasts, with regular infusions of wine, until 2AM.

The bar provides a great pre-dining setting with a good choice of draft ales, bottled beers and well drinks. We brought a relative who was visiting from Europe for the first time here because of the old world charm & atmosphere as well as the wonderful prime rib. There is only one other restaurant that I know of in the Los Angeles area that can claim to be this old and still have a good reputation for high-quality food and service. The service at the Tam o' Shanter is always top-notch and the food, though not avant-guard or trendy, is always reliably well-prepared with high-quality ingredients. The wine was the smallest amount I have ever been served in wine by the glass. For serious carnivores like us, their excellent prime rib selections with the traditional sides of Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes & gravy and choice of creamed corn or spinach make it difficult to stray tot he other wonderful menu offerings & specials, but we sometimes do -- Toad in the Hole, Fish & Chips and many other less-traditional and delicious items. Love the Scottish-themed decor and don't miss their holiday events and the extra-special Christmas decorations and Dickens-costumed carolers.
