Diner Reviews
  • "My in laws took my husband and I to Tallula to celebrate my husband's birthday. We enjoyed offerings from all sections of the menu and everything was delicious! Our server, Morgan, was very knowledgable about the menu and gave done great recommendations including the monkfish and the rabbit terrine. The staff also picked up on it being my husband's birthday and wrote "happy birthday" in chocolate on his dessert plate. We also had our 18 month old with us and the staff was very accommodating of her. Superb service! "

  • "We were there Wednesday night and sat near the open kitchen and while the dinner was excellent, the service was, well, hard to find. If a gentleman (manager?) hadn't stopped by I am not sure how long it would have been for the server to re-appear. Our food was excellent with the exception of the oysters which can with no small foks so we had to use dinner folks to free them from their shell. The busboy had us keep the used forks. I sound picky but this is a pricey place with a lot of effort spent on the cuisine and absence. It is a pet peeve of mine but I was always taught not to remove one person's plate while others were still eating. It's rude."

  • "I had high hopes for this restaurant, but everything we ate was underwhelming, and seemed like it was trying too hard to be "innovative" with the food rather than just making simple, delicious, satisfying food . The ambience and decor of the restaurant is great, and the service was prompt and professional. However, the food was not really worth the price tag. I think there are too many great restaurants in the area to go back to this one unfortunately."

  • "This was my second time there and my husbands first and I was concerned as the menu in the wine room is very limited and thought he might not like it but it ended up being fine :). Our server was wonderful and very sweet and Brent the sommelier, was excellent! The wine list was great! We sat in the front room which I believe is the wine room and it was vey quaint, romantic and quiet but I think next time we will try the restaurant area as it was very pretty. What a little gem in the middle of a strange area! We are looking forward to going back soon! Chris L., Falls Church, VA"

  • "There are few better places to spend a windy, rainy, winter's evening than Tallula. After a drink at EAT Bar, we moved next door for a delicious dinner, beautifully served. The salads were all good, brussel sprouts in the choke and sprout salad were a little underdone, but better that that overdone; and the mains were also good, if a little saltier than necessary. Next time, would ask them to hold back a little. The folks who work there could not be nicer or more expert at their jobs. We will be back!"

  • "Fancy looking interior. Dead on a Tuesday. Service was good. Some awkward interactions but some caused by me. Good hearted people. Fun plate ups. Cold apps didn't come out on cold plates and tartare wasn't super cold like it should. Huge red wine glasses used for white wines. Enjoyed the menu presentation already opened. Very little things that don't usually matter…I just notice little things like that. Menu was nice with a decent variety. Short and succinct and I thought well composed."

  • "My husband and I took our 20 year old son here to celebrate a special occasion. We chose the fixed price tasting menu. The service was impeccable. The food was unbelievable and beautifully presented. We loved our evening here!"

  • "Our evening was very nice and the food was really good!"

  • "Great place for a last minute gathering because reservations were available. Moderately priced and the menu was creative and had options everyone liked. THe beef brisket (chosen by three fo the four people) was dry and tough. My swordfish was good but not great. We really liked the atmosphere so the evening was a success!"

  • "We got a a big table with friends and the service was great! Unusual and fun menu choices like Duck Confit Hash and Beef Shortrib Poutine. My favorite was the chorizo omelette. Have fun!"

  • "The new chef is creative, daring and spot on with his dishes! The bone marrow, foie gras flan and lamb tartare were INCREDIBLE! I HIGHLY recommend them. I have been bragging about them all weekend! I WILL be coming back!"

  • "my friend ordered the char, I ordered the swordfish, and although the fish itself was well cooked the flavor was lacking and the vegetables were mushy."

  • "Went for brunch and food was just "OK". Ever heard anyone say "the salad is too salty"? That is what happened at Tallula. I ordered the roasted beet and arugula salad and I've never had such a salty salad in my life. The greens were overdressed and wilted on top of that. Portions were moderate to small overall - and other dishes shared across the table didn't over impress by any means. I will say the grits were delicious and rich (although still a bit salty), which was a highlight of the brunch. Once upon a time, this was a hot spot - it's apparently not anymore since it was half empty on a Sunday."

  • "Just moved back to the area and was really excited to plan a date at Tallula (used to frequent often). As always, the wine bar at Tallula provides a great opportunity to hold your own small tasting while awaiting your seats. Great ambience and friendly, knowledgeable staff. On the restaurant side, the current chef changes up the menu weekly (from what I was told). In short, our main course was good, but not great. Just not very flavorful (personal choice), the appetizer seemed overpriced, and the dessert was excellent. Very good experience with decent food and great wine. Good enough to recommend to a friend for a date option in the area, but we'll probably try some other places before putting Tallula back on the top of the list."

  • "We ate at this restaurant a few years ago and were not impressed but our recent experience was better in every way. Menu improved, lighting, noise and 'feel' much more upmarket. Food beautifully presented and excellent. My only criticism - I think the menu really favors those who like fish and seafood and does not offer the most balanced of choices - but everything we chose was excellent. Service is flawless but not stuffy. We went on St Valentine's and many restaurants get overwhelmed from a service perspective or offer a very restricted menu but they were on top of their game. We will definitely return. One of the most dramatic improvements I have ever experienced. Order a featured drink as the mixologists are really talented!"

  • "Enjoyed the food, the service and the restaurant. The menu is quite original and the wine list with plenty to choose from. The restaurant has a very unique feeling, which is rare to find these days. A neighborhood gem!"

  • "Tallula is one of those random gems you will find in an area that you would not expect. The ambiance is great inside though the outside, not so much. Though the menu has limited options, but they made each of the dish they offer, exceptional. I would recommend this place as a fine dining for special occasions."

  • "Ok, would be the best way to describe this place. The food came quickly but we had to hunt the waiter down for silverware. The food was not hot and bland, had shrimp and grits. Waiter was nice but not particularly attentive. The hostess was really pleasant and nice."

  • "Went with girlfriend for restaurant week. Really odd blend of foods together but somehow, they made the flavors work. Type of place you would take people to catch up for a couple of hours over a nice dinner. Smaller portions but we were both full by the end of the app/main/dessert coursing."

  • "Discreet facade belies the treasures within this nice setting with inventive healthful contemporary dishes. Perfect service-at hand w/o hovering; manager knows his trade & obliged our request to lower music. Young families kept on other side of room++ separate bar scene w/ TV's etc has its own entrance! Have highly recommended already!"

  • "But the food was...odd. Although it lacked flavor, the presentation of the courses were nice and they do change some of their menu items weekly, so there is a chance they might have something good on the menu. I would recommend this place for a nice cheese and wine sort of restaurant rather than to do the dinner menu again."

  • "This is the second year in a row we've spent NYE at Tallula. The service is great and we've always enjoyed coming here, but the food just wasn't as spectacular as on previous visits. Hoping that's just growing pains with a new chef."

  • "A friend and I decided to check out Tallula during restaurant week. We noticed it in passing because it looks like a pretty hip place from a distance. We had a very nice experience. We like that there was parking available by lot. The host was nice and friendly. It was our first time and the server was patient in answering our questions. The food was very modern and tasty. We had the beet salad and the red snapper, both very good. For dessert I had then chai cheesecake, it came with a side of cranberry sorbet, yummy! I would definitely go back and I recommend this place to a couple who would like a romantic evening."

  • "The private dinning room sits in front of the restaurant which make the noise level travel, then they sat us right up again the private party room (wine wall) and all I could hear was loud men using the F bomb and laughing. Not my idea of a quite dinner with my husband. The food was good but please when you ask for no lemongrass broth on the Red Snapper, please honor the request! It swam in it not my favorite. My husband ordered the brisket very very small portion, too much garnish. Too fancy for a neighborhood restaurant. Overall good food but not for dinner you need to server a larger protein size."

  • "Beet salad with cocoa nips was incredible, as was the brisket that just melted. The cheese board to start was spectacular and the server Jovanah made some great suggestions. Sous Chef Alejandro came out to greet us...it was quite a spectacular evening for us!"

  • "Choices are limited, so it was, OK. They changed the menu in between the week I reserved a table and the time we had our brunch, not sure if this is a regular thing to do for them or not. Some people like surprises I suppose? They had a very limited selection and then ran out of two of the choices, poor planning? Food was fine, service was great. Just disappointing to not get what you plan, when you take the time to plan. Just sayin"

  • "Tough grizzly NYstrip. Our guest even commented how he couldn't give the food a good grade. I had to dig for even a few bites. However, 2 people ordered scallops that they said were good. The appetizers, carrot and beet salads very very good with nice presentations, the desserts a little unusual but OK. We cannot recommend a return visit."

  • "We had tickets for the Kennedy Center to see Elf. After casting about for a 6 pm reservation (almost impossible with just a few days to go before New Years Eve) we found Tallula. We dined there several years ago and it was forgetable. However, we thought we would give it another try. We're glad we did. We had four adults and two kids, six and eight. They seated us in a cozy corner. Service was prompt and courteous. The server made approprite suggestions and got the kids food out quickly. The meals, scallops, brisket and pasta were all done nicely. While we could have lingered over wine and desert we were pressed for time. Elf was forgettable; Tallula's was not. A great experience, nicely done"

  • "I had the duck, it was great and the portion was just right. My wife had the salmon, it appeared to be a 4 oz portion... She left the restaurant hungry. Service was great. We had a toddler with us and the staff were helpful and understanding."

  • "A bit overpriced for entrees that were good but not exceptional. Scallops were too highly seasoned. Pork was tasteless. Chowder was room temperature (soup should be hot on a cold night!) Service was very good. Just wish the food could have rated as high as the service."

  • "Nice restaurant, pleasant atmosphere, but we were left a little non-plussed, to be frank. The menu suggested some seriously high-toned notions, but frankly the execution was somewhat lacking. Tender scallops, cooked to perfection, were sadly over-seasoned and paired with an array of condiments that seemed to want to do the talking, rather than letting the natural succulence of the scallops shine. The pork tenderloin I tried was nice, but a bit dry from overcooking. We found it a tad pricey for the meal we had. Would I go back again? I'd like to try the brunch, but there are simply too many other intriguing options in and around DC to come again for dinner, unless the kitchen gains a better balance between concept and execution."

  • "We really enjoyed our Sunday brunch here. The atmosphere and service were very good. The eggs benedict were terrific, and the prices extremely reasonable ($8 for 2 eggs benedict!). The pancakes were a bit dry and overdone, but everything else was really great."

  • "Robert, Tullula's new Chef is a great find. The new menu is offers a journey into the complex tastes of the fall season. The Duck dish was a delight while the black bass was light and perfectly seasoned."
