Diner Reviews
  • "I took 3 friends to have High Tea at Tal-Y-Tara. We ordered the Motorloaf, which is several different types of sandwiches on specialty bread. We also had Bacon Scones with Cheese, Scallions, and Brown Sugar on top, and Lemon-Lavender Scones. Tears were streaming from my eyes because the scones were so delicious. The entire place is charming and they have a lovely patio. I wanted to stay all day and just chat with my girlfriends."

  • "I came here to have tea with friends and it was a wonderful little tearoom in a residential neighborhood. The motorloaf was delicious and filling. We all left stuffed and ready for a nap. The servers did not rush us and we talked and ate for about two hours before leaving. Definitely come here for a unique take on high tea."

  • "Been here many times...took a new friend...they added a Queen's Tea and other pre-set meals, I liked that."

  • "...a terrific place for lunch and afternoon tea . The motorloaf filled with sandwiches is excellent, as were the scones and jam."

  • "I really loved my experience here. Very different from previous flowery tea room experiences. Service kind of slow only due to the fact that the one server also prepared all the food as we waited. Worth waiting. Food was delicious and very fresh. The motor loaf sandwiches were unique and beautifully presented. Four different scone choices available as well as homemade biscotti. Atmosphere like being in a very comfy English shop in the country -- surrounded by polo supplies. Loved the relaxed pace, friendly feel, and tasty food."

  • "as a first impression it's cute and really cool the service was sad like negative sad. I would try again if in the mood but im was just a little shocked at the service."

  • "Ambiance is cute with the horse and polo theme. Very quiet so it was a pleasant, relaxing experience. Patio was closed. Service was so-so. The young male server seemed untrained and sort of confused. Food was OK -- out of shortbread -- imagine that -- especially because shortbread is the first item for every tea set on the menu! Licorice candy substitute really was not satisfactory. Iceberg salad was room temperature -- not very appetizing. Motor loaf is an interesting concept -- server did accommodate vegetarian guest by substituting more veggie sandwiches in place of meat. Service was not rushed, which was nice. Unlimited tea. Service really needs to be refined and food needs to be fresher to get more stars. By Food for Thought"

  • "I asked my friend what he would like to do to celebrate his birthday, and he suggested Tal-Y-Tara for afternoon tea. It was a nice, very relaxed afternoon with a very traditional tea, and I hope that we will have the occasion to visit there again."

  • "We were the only table of people, during the weekday, we could hear the microwave "dinging" several times before our food was delivered--so yes, the scone (probably frozen) was warmed (did not have that freshly baked aroma), but only for a few minutes. The salads were fresh, the presentation of sandwiches were nice, the fruit was fine but quantity was not even equal to a full apple. The service was not the most charming. We will not be returning."

  • "It's a good place to sip some tea and be around the neighborhood...although it is a small place, very quaint and the servers were very friendly."

  • "I'd been here before on a weekend, when it was very busy, but brought my Mom back on a Wednesday afternoon. We practically had the place to ourselves! I highly recommend coming during the week if you can. The server was attentive and knowledgeable, the food was delicious, and the overall feel of the place was charming. We had a lovely tea for two, and left completely stuffed! It doesn't seem like much food at first, but we couldn't finish the "Will and Kate" tea (and we both love to eat). I would recommend this to anyone wanting a good, honest, tea. Nothing fancy, very few bells and whistles, but fantastic food and ambiance. Don't forget to pet the horse out front, too, he works hard. ;-)"

  • "We really enjoyed all of the little sandwiches. The egg one was the best. And their warm scones are amazing!!! We are more of coffee drinkers so we will be back when their coffee machine is fixed. Definitely a wonderful little place."

  • "We used a groupon on the final day before expiration, and many others had the same idea. Perhaps there were some unexpected drop in customers, but the two people working were clearly overwhelmed. The food was very good but *very* slow to arrive (the staff apologized profusely for the delay). I imagine the service is much better on a typical day, and I do plan to come again."

  • "What a lovely gem of a cozy spot to enjoy a very nice high tea. Went there on a raining day after taking a nice walk through the neighborhood. It's small, but quaint. It would have been nice if the temperature was warmer. The food and tea are delightful. My friend and I love the motor coach bread - very yummy tea sandwiches or with butter and marmalade!!!! The Queen's tea service starts with piping hot tea (the tea cozies add to the charm) & scottish shortbread (with little nuggets of chocolate & cranberries). The choice of 4 types of scones are served hot out of the oven along with potted creme and jam. The trifle at the end is rich and delicious! Overall I really like the place. The food is authentic!"

  • "It was like traveling back in time and to a different place. I live nearby and always thought it was a store selling equipment for horse riding. Instead it has a quite cosy and very romantic tea room in the back. The waitress was the most helpful and knowledgeable about different teas, which was very helpful. She was able to explain the difference between teas to help us with placing the order, going as far as offering to smell the tea before placing the order. I'll definitely be back again."

  • "Finally a good tea place! Though the decor is slightly surprising (in a store), the food is delicious. They make their own loaves, which makes it so much better. I've been to fancier and more expensive places that don't make their own food. The sandwiches are very moist and tasty. The scones are really good and the tea is delicious. Great service and very nice people. Though it way out of my way, i prefer Tal-Y-Tara to a fancier place that's only 3 blocks away from me. I would highly recommend it."

  • "great spot for tea including a wide selection of teas; fresh scones, salads and finger sandwiches. The bread is especially good. The setting is relaxing, service is good and one never feels hurried to leave. You can linger over tea without being rushed out. This is a good place to come with friends to not only enjoy tea but to chat in a lovely setting."

  • "I came across this little hole in the wall while looking for a nice place to go for high tea. I really enjoyed myself, and so did my mother, aunts, and cousins (ladies' day out). It's a nice, cute place and the tea is very good, as well as the scones!"

  • "A perfect place to have High Tea. Wonderful selection of teas, great small sandwiches, sweets, plus they serve a salad also. I also just realized they serve gluten-free items. Clearly the wait staff are knowledgeable about horses and tack, since half of the space is given over to a working tack store. That taxes the punctuality of the service."

  • "The restaurant was terrific in the face of a royal screw up by Open Table, who allowed a reservation for us when Tal-y-Tara had asked them NOT to that day, due to a large private party. Hence the restaurant owner had to call me and apologize profusely, made all the tougher as my party was unable to reschedule. Shame on you, OpenTable! - you owe both me and the resaurant a big apology."

  • "I was looking for afternoon tea in San Francisco and a lot of the usual suspects now only offer it during the Christmas Holiday Seasons. This was my first time at Tal-Y-Tara Tea & Polo Shoppe and they do a great job. Finding parking is a bit of an effort but well worth it. The entry, thru the Polo Shoppe is charming. I was surprised and pleased to a back courtyard with seating - nice to have the option of inside or outside. Lots of choices, I was short on time and my server was helpful in meeting my schedule. I loved the Motorloaf bread with fruit and cheese plate & scones."

  • "English Tea and horses - it doesn't get any better than that! I loved the atmosphere of the equestrian shop/tea room, with beautiful antique armoires holding the riding apparel and horse-related tchotchkes for sale, a huge antique mantelpiece surrounded by posters and prints of polo ponies, hunters and jumpers, and sweetly mismatched tables, chairs and loveseats all set up for English Tea. I was very impressed by the large selection of teas, especially the decaf black teas, since these are usually hard to find in tea rooms. The housemade "Motorbread" sandwiches were hardy and delicious, and the very helpful staff accomodated my request for all vegetarian sandwiches. The fresh-baked scones were perfect, as was the Devonshire cream and jam."

  • "The atmosphere was a little weird. I was alone and sitting at a table not 3 feet from the one at which the owners, and apparently their adult son were seated having a family discussion. None acknowledged my presence, and so it felt like I was eavesdropping. The food, a light lunch was nicely prepared and served, but nothing special. I won't be going back"

  • "It's super far from where I live but my roommate and I went anyway and had a great time. The couple who own the tea shoppe are super friendly and personable. They also bake their own bread!!"
