We had a disappointing evening at this restaurant. When we were greeted by the host, he did not have our reservation. When he was shown the Open Table email confirmation from 2 days prior, he claimed they had computer problems. We were seated at a noisy table close to the musician despite our request through Open Table for quiet one. We were given menus when we were seated; although there appeared to be a buffet, it wasn't mentioned by the person who seated us. We elected to order off the menu, which turned out to be a mistake since we waited over 30 minutes before we were able to track down a waiter to take our order. Once we did pull a waiter to the table, he excused himself and then became involved in another task. We waited another 5 minutes. Once we ordered, the food came in about 30 minutes, a long time for an Indian restaurant when no appetizers were ordered. In all of our interactions, no apologies were offered, if anything, they treated us like we were the problem. So if you go to this restaurant, plan to eat from the buffet and expect good, but not impressive Indian food.

  • Best Tandoori Chicken ever!

    Dined on 11/5/2014
We were surprised at the high quality of food. We had Tandoori Chicken which was thoroughly cooked, with just correct amount of spice and yogurt sauce to cool down the moist flesh. Most Indian restaurants overcook the chicken and it is dry- but not here! The prawn biryani had 5-6 pieces and with the tamarind sauce was heavenly. A lamb saag (with spinach) rounded out the entrees. An appetizer of roasted spinach on peppery papadum with yogurt sauce was great. We were too full for dessert, having also ordered a stuffed naan. Dosas at next table looked interesting. An added treat was the white draped musician using instruments from sitar to guitar, flute, violin playing traditional & original pieces. Very Special Evening at moderate prices.

The Taj has a dinner buffet with a wonderful selection from which to choose so there was something for everyone. There were 4 adults and 3 children and we all enjoyed the food! This is also a very kid friendly place. We will be back!

Their regular dinners are great; well prepared and nicely spiced. On the Friday night we were there, we all enjoyed the fabulous and tasty buffet - a little bit of their best dishes, for $17.00. It was wonderful!

We had a fairly good dinner here last week but think there is better Indian food to be found in San Rafael. One nice touch was the live music - great background and not too loud.

There are numerous Indian restaurants in the SF Bay Area and most menus are very, very similar. Taj had dishes, styles and preparations that I haven't seen before. A very nice dinner!

We had dinner here last week and were very pleased. The service was very attentive without hovering, really pleasant. We ordered 2 appetizers, 4 main dishes and the non bread basket for 4 people; we had food left over. All dishes were very flavorful and wonderfully prepared. I look forward to gong back.

The town was havering a fair out front so it was busy to get too. After 5:30pm parking is free in town. I have two half orders and the chicken tandoor was good and not dried out.
