Diner Reviews
  • "We were sat 45mins after our reservation. While waiting we asked if we could have some biscuits and the waitress told us no. She then brought them to us but after she said she shouldn't be. She countinued through the entire with the same rude behavior. She ignores us and She threw our dessert bites on to the table. Can't say I'll be back."

  • "Came here on a trip from out of town. Fantastic, as others have said. From the fried green tomatoes, to the amazing fried chicken, to the tasty risotto, we didn't go wrong."

  • "We had a great time. Many selections of wine and the food was great. We also had a bonus of having a live piano player which made the night even more special."

  • "In Chicago on vacation, my husband and I were looking forward to brunch at Table 52 for weeks. Reservations were for 10:30 and the weather was fantastic! We were seated immediately and very quickly waiter asked for our drink order. Waiter was very polite, knowledgeable and attentive, atmosphere was great. The complimentary sweet potato bread and cinnamon butter was astonishingly good! I had the fried chicken and waffles which were sadly only average. Chicken lacked seasoning. Nothing to make them stand out. My husband had boudin vert, which was good, and elegantly prepared, but again nothing that made it "pop" - the boudin was surprisingly bland. Were expecting more from a restaurant associated with the respected Art Smith."

  • "Great restaurant all-around. Our starters were beautifully plated and dressed with the right amount of dressing. Our waiter was excellent- attentive to our wine and water glasses, etc. The ambiance on the second floor was energetic but still romantic (lighting at just the right setting, etc). Entrees were excellent; they somehow make fried fish not taste heavy. As for dessert, the pecan pie is a must. We really loved Table 52. An intimate restaurant that does everything very well."

  • "We had an excellent meal at Table Fifty-Two. All four of us enjoyed our dinners - Fried chicken, shrimp & grits, greens, mac & cheese, deviled eggs, ... Everything was a bit different than one might expect for the dish. For example, the deviled eggs of the night had a kick that one would not get in the usual eggs encountered at a picnic. I would have added another star, but service was a bit slow. In spite of getting there at 5:45 we didn't have time for dessert and coffee and still get to Second City a bit early for the 8pm show."

  • "This is our second visit to Table 52, and we traveled 4 hours on the train just for the this meal. The service is impeccable - staff is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable! The food exceeds words to describe the amazing flavors! Just close your eyes and savor every bite. We are already planning our next visit. The deviled egg were light and delicious! We were lucky enough to try hushpuppies that were not on the regular menu. Each bite was more delicious than the next. My husband and I both enjoyed the catfish, and were not disappointed! This was an anniversary dinner to remember. We now compare every meal to those we've enjoyed here, as Table 52 is our new gold standard. Few can compare!"

  • "Only one waitress for the entire restaurant, so we sat with empty dinner dishes for 20 minutes until we were able to flag her down to get the dessert menu. The food was a disappointment. Corn soup served in a tiny cup. The menu did not mention red pepper as an ingredient on the margherita pizza so neither of our two children enjoyed them -- as they normally would do with a plain pizza. Bizarre flavor combos -- peanuts in a squash risotto with cheese. Banana layer cake was served a little too cold. The frosting was solid as a result, rather than smooth. All around, a disappointment."

  • "It doesn't look like much from the outside but the decor inside is beautifully done. Such a comfortable and charming place. The fried chicken was unbelievable. Everything was delicious and prepared beautifully."

  • "The wait staff was fantastic. The food was delicious and our experience at Table 52 was superb. We will deffinitely be back."

  • "Crisping chicken properly while keeping it moist & tender is not an easy task. The Chicken & Waffle dish is well done, not as complex as Roy Oh's masterpiece but a solid dish nonetheless. Preparing grits that by their texture alone explain why they're called grits & by their taste, why one bothers to labour in their preparation takes serious skill & passion. That's the Shrimp & Grits at Table 52. The Cronut is decadent & dreamy. Liquid cheesecake inside a pastry that can only be the love child of a croissant & a donut. We only wished there was a smidgen more white chocolate ganache and a dollop more raspberry coulis. With an attentive server who can pace the service & pair wine to each course insures that Table 52 delivers on expectations"

  • "The meal and experience was fine, but disappointing after hearing such wonderful reviews. Nothing was wrong with the service persay, but our waiter was unattentive and not excited to be there. There are dozens of better choices in Chicago."

  • " My husband and our son enjoyed their steak. I had the fried chicken, it was ok, nothing special about it. We loved the mac and cheese and the pizza. The sweet potato was outstanding! The biscuit was a disappointment- small, pricey and different. We ordered the lobster soup, there was a smaller than thumb-size lobster piece on each of our soup cup. The time in-between servings was quite lenghthy. Service was ok."

  • "This is normally a favorite of ours. Tonight, our server talked a little too much and was sometimes insulting of our food preferences. Great scene and good food though. I have never been there before with open tables and tonight there were numerous. Hope that's not a sign of something bad! Will go again!"

  • "Setting was extraordinary - service examplary. A perfect evening out! Limited menu with delicious food. The desserts are to die for."

  • "The ambience isn't very kid-friendly. Our kids are 10 & 12 and dine out with us all the time. The service is more designed for adults and at a very slow pace. Probably would have been different without the kids. Would have preferred the downstairs seating but felt like they put is the upstairs corner since we had kids. All of the food was excellent but my husband and mother in law's Southern dishes are just as good if not better. Small choice of menu items so make sure you are going for southern comfort food - friend chicken, friend green tomatoes, collard greens, biscuits, etc. Never even knew the server's name - she seemed too busy to interact much, had at least 8 tables that we could count. Thank goodness she had help."

  • "The restaurant was recommended by one of our business colleagues who lives in the Chicago area. Service was extremely slow. From the moment we walked in to the time we walked out, it was a 2 1/2 hour event - much of that time waiting at the beginning to be served wine. Once we brought this to the hostess' attention, things went a bit faster. I wish our server was more familiar with the restaurant's wine list too. She seemed a bit flustered by the extra time spent answering questions, when she had a bigger group needing her attention across the aisle - while other waitresses, it appeared, were looking for things to do at their assigned tables."

  • "Two words...yum yum. On our table we had the fried chicken, catfish, greens, Mac and cheese and deviled eggs as app. The fresh cheese biscuits were wonderful! Chicken was seasoned very well. No complaints either on Mac and cheese, could taste the multiple cheeses in it. Now the greens had way to much vinegar. I personally hate that in my greens. I was surprised they didn't just bring a bottle of vinegar to table (like other restaurants), so it's left up to patron. Catfish, was excellent. We will be back again and plan on trying brunch out."

  • "The biscuits made with goat cheese were fantastic, but the overall meal was very good, not outstanding. After hearing often about the famed fried chicken, I thought it was excellent, but not the best I'd ever had. I went in with admittedly high expectations, and while my experience didn't necessarily meet them, I still very much enjoyed the experience. Try Art's Hummingbird Cake. That was outrageous."

  • "We have eaten at Table 52 on three occasions in the last year and half and have not been disappointed in any way. The food, service and attention to detail has been excellent on each visit. My wife is originally from Georgia and is a big fan of the shrimp and grits. I like the duck confit for something a little different. All of the meals are plated well and well seasoned."

  • "My friends and I had a great meal here! We loved the special drinks and our server was fabulous! I think the desserts could have been a bit better to match the quality/creativity of the appetizers/entrees.....in my opinion, they fell a bit short. But I was so stuffed with delicious food by that point that it seemed like a minor point."

  • "The buttermilk biscuts were great. The risotto portion was very small. The fried chicken was ok. Unfortunatley, the spinach was too vingegary and we could not eat it. Out sever was fantastic. Oveall a nice experience.."

  • "We were a table of four. All agreed that while the food was good it was not near the level expected, especially based on price and reputation. My fish was overcooked and dry. There was very little sauce served with several of the dishes that needed more. The shrimp in the shrimp and grits was so small as to be a non participant. The fried chicken was good but nothing special. The tiny bistro we visited in Paris would not have served it, comparing it their own. The best part was the biscuits served as a starter. Of the several restaurants we visited during our stay in Chicago this was our least favorite."

  • "The food is interesting and unique but may be a little overpriced for Southern fare. Unfortunately our service was slow on a Tuesday which was surprising , but foodies will love the unusual presentation for things like deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, and cornbread. It was an experience."

  • "My family and I went for brunch. My eggs benedict was fantastic. My daughters fried chicken was fair. My wife's breakfast pizza was too salty to eat. They did take the pizza off the bill. Guess I was the lucky one. I so wanted this to be a home run! I will give it another chance though. Nobody can be perfect all of the time!"

  • "Dinner at Table 52 was a fantastic restaurant. The quality of the food they ordered with amazing. I highly recommend the fried green tomatoes they offer. The ingredients complement well with each other. Also, the Berkshire Pork was cooked to perfection. It was very moist. As for the sides, the three-cheese mac was very good. It was sizzling hot and the cheese melts right in with the macaroni. The atmosphere and service with excellent too. It is more relaxed and the waiters were very friendly. This is a place I would dine again if I were in Chicago."

  • "My wife and I went to table 52 to celebrate a milestone birthday. We got dressed up and had a very pleasant experience. The service was outstanding and the food did not disappoint. This is a small place with not that many tables which made it feel cozy and inviting without being pretentious. We usually don't spend a lot of money on fancy dinning, but we could not have been more happy with the price for our special evening. Highly recommended for a romantic night out. And don't miss sharing some hummingbird cake with your significant other!"

  • "I knew Art Smith 30 years ago back at Florida State University when he served as a mentor to our Little Dinner Series in the Hotel and Restaurant Administration Department. He had a big heart and personality back then and it seems that hasn't changed! It was a pleasure to have dinner in his restaurant and witness his success! I only wish he had been there so I could say hello!"

  • "My husband and I went to Chicago for the weekend and I was looking for a restaurant that we always meant to try. Table 52 in the Gold Coast was the perfect fit! I got a reso about a week beforehand. Table 52 is an old, converted carriage house on Elm St. which is warm and inviting. It has just a few tables that are fairly close together but it isn't too noisy. The server was very knowledgable but a bit on the slow side which would be my only complaint. My husband had the fried chicken and I had the catfish. The chicken was the best I've ever had. Catfish also very good. Mac and cheese was also very tasty. Unfortunately we didn't have room for desert. We will definitely be back. I loved that the chef brought the food over (nice touch)."

  • "Service was slow! Entree selection too limited. The two fish items were walley and catfish: pretty poor. Food preperation was largely fried: not healthy. Will not return."
