Our tree-covered courtyard only adds to the space's timeless feel to create a truly New Orleans experience. By restoring the historic doors, ceilings, and balconies to their original glory and adding elegant seating, lighting and artwork, Sylvain feels at once historic, yet thoroughly modern — all done with a nod to the comedic opera that bears its name. And isn't a skillfully-performed comedic opera something any truly great New Orleans restaurant should aspire to be?

  • "The place is charming is a tumbled-down way. Must say I enjoyed the southern anti-pasti place and the shrimp perlou. Other wise the service sort of surely. Additionally, we were asked to wait to be seated even when we were on time for our reservation and the two separate couples in front of us did not have reservations and were seated promptly. Seems as if the managers Ned to learn their business a bit better."

Half and half mix of locals and in the know tourists, they come for the adventurous food and the craft made cocktails, made by the best bartenders in the city, Entrees such as shredded pork shoulder formed into a cake and the sublime beef cheeks are two of the non" New Orleans" choices on the short but effective menu. Make a reservation, the place is snall and you will want to eat there."

  • "Dinner last was a fourth, and likely final visit to Sylvain. Lovely location deserving of a better restaurant operation. Last night was off in almost every regard ambiance, food and service. Music playing at a level which required screaming to be heard across the table. My burger was med well instead of med rare, my date's chicken fried steak almost impossible to cut through. Waitress just in the wrong line of work. Missed our empty cocktail drink glasses when dropping appetizer cheese plate, she didn't name the cheeses presented . Glaring lack of staff training/experience, and a kitchen slacking off. They have a steady demand and profits the location alone affords them. Therefore their lackluster effort must seem to them sufficient."

  • "We waited a long time to get water, menus, etc. after we had been seated. However, once the host realized that we had been waiting so long, he came over and personally apologized, and then sent over a complimentary cheese plate. This put our party in a better mood and we forgave the faux pas. The cheese plate was a wonderful assortment which we quickly devoured! All the entrees were delicious, especially the Gulf Shrimp with grits. The appetizer of braised lamb's neck was divine! Only criticism was the lighting could have been better. Excellent wine list and well priced! A little too dark in the area where we were seated. We like to see our food! Would definitely recommend to others and would go back the next time we are in New Orleans."

  • "The pozole soup was so fabulous that the fish entree was a bit of a let-down. However, the service was wonderful, and it was a great location in the French Quarter without being too touristy. I visit NOLA once a year, and am always on the lookout for new restaruants. This trip was some of the best dining of my recent NOLA trips and it started with Sylvain the night I arrived. I also appreciated the personal note that arrived shortly after I returned home. I'll be back..."

  • "Excellent gourmet comfort food! We had a three course meal starting with the chili almonds and a seasonal cheese plate. The almonds were exceptional. I had the pan roasted pork shoulder with grits and collard greens and my husband had the country fried steak. The sides were out of this world on my dish and my husband could really taste the meat of his dish. We finished with the pot de creme and I would order it all again . It was very delicious and affordable."

  • "Visited w/ wife for brunch. Enjoyed the character flaw cocktail. For appetizer we had chicken and biscuit. Yum! Served with honey butter and sage gravy. For entree wife had short rib hash. I had sausage patty melt. Both were great. Must concede, wife's entree a little cold around edges. First round of drinks a little slow but were worth the wait. On Open Table reservation we noted outside seating preference but were seated inside. Hostess didn't ask us about sitting outside. I should have asked but courtyard looked like tables were taken or not set but I passed through to wash hands and noticed a few open. Would have been nice to be given the option since it was noted as our preference. All in all, would go again and recommend to others."

  • "Guess when we booked this restaurant, we reviewed the menu and thought it would be a nice, casual good food & drink establishment. However, it was very noisy for we sat in the main room with the bar. The bar area was very full and it was difficult for servers to get by between all the people at the bar and our table. If there was a little fabric either on the walls, ceiling or tablecloths, maybe the noise level would be better. There were times we had to ask the waitress to repeat herself for the noise level was louder than her. And we are not old. Good food, OK service, and not something we would recommend. Sorry...."

  • "Sylvain was a great experience. A friend recommended the place and I am so glad I stopped in. The place is a bit dark which makes for a perfect romantic setting. The staff was very friendly and professional. We sat inside but the patio also look like a nice spot to dine. The fried eggplant was divine. The lemon aioli drizzled on top was out of this world! For being a fried dish, the eggplant was very light. The only con I have about Sylvain is the smell. It is a pretty strong stench, similar to Bourbon street. I am not sure if the after effect of Katrina or it's just the city. After a while, the smell did subside. I would recommend a few more scented candles. Overall, great place!"

The serivce was great including the wine selection recommended by our server. The appetizers, salad, entrees, and dessert were all outstanding. Based on the number of filled tables it looks like reservations would be needed well into the evening. Highly recommend."

  • "Sylvain offered a very nice menu of food and wines fit for foodies. The location in the Quarter is charming and the service was attentive and professional. Half the tables are inside near the bar and half are outside in a great courtyard. We were seated inside where the noise from the bar and the recorded music made it very difficult for my wife and I to have a conversation. I would not return to Sylvain for the same experience, in spite of the quality of the meal. I will return and experience Sylvain from the courtyard seats, where I believe the noise level is much lower."
