A word from Sylvain
In fall 2010, Sylvain opened its doors in one of the world’s most celebrated neighborhoods. By celebrating the city's storied past as well as creating a menu and design aesthetic that blends both the past and future, Sylvain provides an oasis of style and unmatched quality. From dining on elevated bistro classics to enjoying a wine program and cocktail menu that leans toward the classics while embracing the resurgence of cocktail culture, guests will savor the restaurant's unspoiled rawness and modern luxury.

Our tree-covered courtyard only adds to the space's timeless feel to create a truly New Orleans experience. By restoring the historic doors, ceilings, and balconies to their original glory and adding elegant seating, lighting and artwork, Sylvain feels at once historic, yet thoroughly modern — all done with a nod to the comedic opera that bears its name. And isn't a skillfully-performed comedic opera something any truly great New Orleans restaurant should aspire to be?

Diner Reviews
  • "Beautiful place. Indoor dining room/bar has the feeling of an old tavern, but the beautiful courtyard garden is what really stands out. Lush and cool (at least in April), it was the perfect place for brunch. The food and service matched the setting as well."

  • "Wonderful food and great service, the carbonara was fantastic!"

  • "We arrived a few minutes early and they had tables available in the courtyard which we told them we would be glad to take one of those. We sat and had two very good appetizer and salad courses with some tasty treats. Then we waited for 45 min. between the salad course and the entree. The waiter, manager and the owner were all very passive aggressive about their nonchalant attitude. REAL CUSTOMER SERVICE.NOT. There are too many good restaurants in new orleans to suffer this one. "

  • "Completely enjoyed our dinner here. Everything we ordered was delicious. "

  • "Sylvain is a pocket of sophistication in an overly touristy part of the French Quarter. The menu is inventive, the execution is masterful, and the result is delicious. The atmosphere and service of the place is great, too. Choose a window table inside and watch the world go by, or request a table in the courtyard and soak up the spirit of New Orleans. You can't go wrong at Sylvain. "

  • "The food is gastronomic-pub and quite good. Noise level us very high. Hard to have a conversation. Service was excellent and friendly as most service in New Orleans tends to be. Prices were a tad high for what we ate but overall good impression. But I'm also very spoiled b/c we live right near the California wine country so we expect a lot from restaurants these days! "

  • "I had the most amazing time while dining at Sylvain! I recommend the Corbread stuffed Quail dish. It was SO delicious and had the NOLA flair, but more refined. My boyfriend got the sausage with red cabbage salad and loved it as well. We started with the wagyu beef belly and it was SO delicious! The wine, cocktails and SURPRISING beer selection (typically everyone had abita that's all) was great because of the variety in which I haven't found anywhere else. My boss Stephanie March (bobby flays wife) recommended Sylvain to me & now I will CERTAINLY tell everyone to go! Thank you for a perfect meal & experience !"

  • "Food was good. Bar was loud but they moved us. They need better lighting"

  • "The place is charming is a tumbled-down way. Must say I enjoyed the southern anti-pasti place and the shrimp perlou. Other wise the service sort of surely. Additionally, we were asked to wait to be seated even when we were on time for our reservation and the two separate couples in front of us did not have reservations and were seated promptly. Seems as if the managers Ned to learn their business a bit better."

  • "Top chef, miserable chairs, no light, loud. Too bad! Food is memorable, service is poor, anxious to eat and leave."

  • "Had a wonderful time celebrating a friend's birthday. Great selection of seafood and wines. What a gem in the neighborhood. Already made reservations for another friend's birthday."

  • "Sylvain's is a perky little neighborhood bistro even though it's within a half block from Jackson Square. Half and half mix of locals and in the know tourists, they come for the adventurous food and the craft made cocktails, made by the best bartenders in the city, Entrees such as shredded pork shoulder formed into a cake and the sublime beef cheeks are two of the non" New Orleans" choices on the short but effective menu. Make a reservation, the place is snall and you will want to eat there."

  • "Sylvain's is a true gem in a city with wonderful food. Awesome food with outstanding service…hard to beat."

  • "Place was nice enough and service was good but the menu for lunch was pretty much a standard burger and fries kind of place for the most part. Decently cooked but nothing special."

  • "Old school with a twist and meticulous preparation. Sometimes it seems chefs do things differently just for the sake of being different. At Sylvain's the creative touches add interesting dimensions to familiar dishes. This place is a must in Nola."

  • "Dinner last was a fourth, and likely final visit to Sylvain. Lovely location deserving of a better restaurant operation. Last night was off in almost every regard ambiance, food and service. Music playing at a level which required screaming to be heard across the table. My burger was med well instead of med rare, my date's chicken fried steak almost impossible to cut through. Waitress just in the wrong line of work. Missed our empty cocktail drink glasses when dropping appetizer cheese plate, she didn't name the cheeses presented . Glaring lack of staff training/experience, and a kitchen slacking off. They have a steady demand and profits the location alone affords them. Therefore their lackluster effort must seem to them sufficient."

  • "Really great food best so far in NO. Great feel to the place loved the busy bar and cool courtyard out back. Only minor niggle was that it was so dark (2 small candles on table) it was hard to see the amazing food we were eating."

  • "Had a small but varied menu of very tasty dishes. Service was low key but excellent. Sat outside in the courtyard on a beautiful spring evening. Highly recommend for a low key, modestly priced dinner."

  • "Our group from Chicago had a wonderful time at Sylvain. Best meal of the trip. The service , food, ambience was top quality. Everything about the night was OUTSTANDING !!!"

  • "We waited a long time to get water, menus, etc. after we had been seated. However, once the host realized that we had been waiting so long, he came over and personally apologized, and then sent over a complimentary cheese plate. This put our party in a better mood and we forgave the faux pas. The cheese plate was a wonderful assortment which we quickly devoured! All the entrees were delicious, especially the Gulf Shrimp with grits. The appetizer of braised lamb's neck was divine! Only criticism was the lighting could have been better. Excellent wine list and well priced! A little too dark in the area where we were seated. We like to see our food! Would definitely recommend to others and would go back the next time we are in New Orleans."

  • "The pozole soup was so fabulous that the fish entree was a bit of a let-down. However, the service was wonderful, and it was a great location in the French Quarter without being too touristy. I visit NOLA once a year, and am always on the lookout for new restaruants. This trip was some of the best dining of my recent NOLA trips and it started with Sylvain the night I arrived. I also appreciated the personal note that arrived shortly after I returned home. I'll be back..."

  • "Best part was the Bloody Mary, made with frsh-squeezed tomatoes, very interesting and different. Worst part was no bread, I like to knosh on something while Im having my cocktail. Food was very good."

  • "The food was, for the most part, good. The service was rushed but attentive. The restaurant is very loud and dark (they supply flashlights for reading the menu!). We would likely go back."

  • "A sign that the rest of the meal has the same level of care and flavor. Tough choices for brunch, all great!"

  • "Shaved brussel sprout salad, fried eggplant very good starters. Flounder special superb. All food fresh and well prepared. It's a fun, happening (sometimes noisy) and popular hangout near Jackson Square. Very good to excellent all around. A funky feel that most Quarter venues miss."

  • "Service is consistently very slow here and see no improvement! Even the quality of food seems to be on the decline. Very sad. We used to at least love the food even tho painfully slow."

  • "Excellent gourmet comfort food! We had a three course meal starting with the chili almonds and a seasonal cheese plate. The almonds were exceptional. I had the pan roasted pork shoulder with grits and collard greens and my husband had the country fried steak. The sides were out of this world on my dish and my husband could really taste the meat of his dish. We finished with the pot de creme and I would order it all again . It was very delicious and affordable."

  • "The atmosphere is lively and hip, the food was fresh and creative, service was good and the cocktails were delicious. We loved Sylvain and can't wait to go back. Also, there is a lovely small patio outback for warmer weather and the bar area looks like fun."

  • "Visited w/ wife for brunch. Enjoyed the character flaw cocktail. For appetizer we had chicken and biscuit. Yum! Served with honey butter and sage gravy. For entree wife had short rib hash. I had sausage patty melt. Both were great. Must concede, wife's entree a little cold around edges. First round of drinks a little slow but were worth the wait. On Open Table reservation we noted outside seating preference but were seated inside. Hostess didn't ask us about sitting outside. I should have asked but courtyard looked like tables were taken or not set but I passed through to wash hands and noticed a few open. Would have been nice to be given the option since it was noted as our preference. All in all, would go again and recommend to others."

  • "Guess when we booked this restaurant, we reviewed the menu and thought it would be a nice, casual good food & drink establishment. However, it was very noisy for we sat in the main room with the bar. The bar area was very full and it was difficult for servers to get by between all the people at the bar and our table. If there was a little fabric either on the walls, ceiling or tablecloths, maybe the noise level would be better. There were times we had to ask the waitress to repeat herself for the noise level was louder than her. And we are not old. Good food, OK service, and not something we would recommend. Sorry...."

  • "Sylvain was a great experience. A friend recommended the place and I am so glad I stopped in. The place is a bit dark which makes for a perfect romantic setting. The staff was very friendly and professional. We sat inside but the patio also look like a nice spot to dine. The fried eggplant was divine. The lemon aioli drizzled on top was out of this world! For being a fried dish, the eggplant was very light. The only con I have about Sylvain is the smell. It is a pretty strong stench, similar to Bourbon street. I am not sure if the after effect of Katrina or it's just the city. After a while, the smell did subside. I would recommend a few more scented candles. Overall, great place!"

  • "We love the entire food scene in New Orleans and made reservations at Sylvain that was new to us. We had 7:00 p.m. reservations and were seated immediately. The serivce was great including the wine selection recommended by our server. The appetizers, salad, entrees, and dessert were all outstanding. Based on the number of filled tables it looks like reservations would be needed well into the evening. Highly recommend."
