A word from Sylvain
In fall 2010, Sylvain opened its doors in one of the world’s most celebrated neighborhoods. By celebrating the city's storied past as well as creating a menu and design aesthetic that blends both the past and future, Sylvain provides an oasis of style and unmatched quality. From dining on elevated bistro classics to enjoying a wine program and cocktail menu that leans toward the classics while embracing the resurgence of cocktail culture, guests will savor the restaurant's unspoiled rawness and modern luxury.

Our tree-covered courtyard only adds to the space's timeless feel to create a truly New Orleans experience. By restoring the historic doors, ceilings, and balconies to their original glory and adding elegant seating, lighting and artwork, Sylvain feels at once historic, yet thoroughly modern — all done with a nod to the comedic opera that bears its name. And isn't a skillfully-performed comedic opera something any truly great New Orleans restaurant should aspire to be?

Diner Reviews
  • "The food and the service was impeccable. Every bite was a joy. The only thing I would say is turn down the air conditioning. I was shaking from the cold by the end of the meal. The air was also chilling my food so I had to eat it rather quickly."

  • "Whenever I'm in New Orleans I always stop in here for at least one meal - fantastic food and amazing cocktails. It's a small place, but does have some outdoor seating so make you reservation in advance so you don't miss out!"

  • "Everything was great; the restaurant is very dark."

  • "Cocktails, food, and service were all wonderful. Our server was very helpful and nice. We had the pork shoulder and quail dishes, both of which were awesome. Looking forward to my next visit!"

  • "Sylvain is one of our favorite restaurants - we live hear and enjoy taking guests out for dinner here. The space is beautiful, the food is always outstanding, and its in the heart of the French Quarter. In the spring and fall, sitting in the courtyard is an additional treat."

  • "Amazing and tasty seafood. I liked the wine list and the little Portuguese white wine we took. Cosy and romantic ambiance"

  • "The food and the drinks were excellent, but it was a little too dark. I had trouble seeing the menu."

  • "We had a great experience in this restaurant. The food and drinks were delicious!"

  • "The food was Great. Nice and small cozy place but the noice level was very high which took away the feel of the calm Ambience that it had when you first walk in."

  • "The best thing about this restaurant is the lack of touristy-tourists. Sure, there may be out-of-towners but they aren't wearing beads and acting like drunken idiots. So that's a huge plus. The food was pretty good. I had a special salad to start - good but nothing extraordinary. Chili almonds were nice with a drink. My pork Milanese was a very large portion served with some more salad (wish I had known) and farro that was a bit undercooked. I would go back to try something else. My husband had the chicken sandwich which was moist and well-prepared but nothing special. Nice service, friendly and prompt. The worst problem is that the lighting is too dark and I simply could not see what I was eating."

  • "Really delicious food, but sitting outside on rickety wooden furniture not compatible with really delicious food. Outdoor decor could be done so simply to enhance experience. Overall, good food, but not a fave destination, may choose inside next time."

  • "Lighting too dim but the location itself is quite beautiful. The courtyard would be nice weather permitting."

  • "I found this restaurant on one of those review websites and quickly picked it out as a must-do in New Orleans. The restaurant did not disappoint. Our server was helpful, patient, and always right on time. He seemed as though he really cared about our dining experience. We had the antipasti plate; it offered a wonderful selection of meats and vegetables pickled, cured, and seasoned to perfection. For dinner we had the shrimp and the pork Milanese. They were both excellent, but the pork stole the show. I ordered sorbet for desert and it quickly changed all my opinions on sorbet. It was smooth and flavorful. The pot de creme was rich and decadent. Finally, the music selection is top notch: contemporary and classic indie and alternative."

  • "Good eats, nice service, a little noisy. Antipasti plate was good, especially the black-eyed pea hummus - lots of lemon. Generous portion - would be good to share with a couple other people. My date and I ordered the chicken sandwich and burger. The chicken breast was huge, with good breading and very moist. Burger was perfectly cooked with cheese, served plainly on a bun. Look elsewhere for lettuce and tomatoes. Generous side of fries with both plates, and delicious house made pickles. Had a glass of the rose, very nice. Had a cute table by the window overlooking Chartres. The bar looked like a fun place to hang out - will be back for drinks sometime."

  • "We only got salad (excellent) soup ( just ok) and 3 appetizers ( all 3 were pretty bland) . Nice wine though."

  • "Sweetbreads and beef cheeks very good and tasty. Good atmosphere, but not for the hard of hearing. Wine list a little too abbreviated. Service a little confused but friendly. Worth a visit"

  • "I'm from New Orleans and have tried many of the newer hot spots. Sylvain's cuisine is really top notch - full of flavor, but not fussy or too precious."

  • " It is a small rest with lots of energy. The Bar was hopping, & the vibe was fun. The menu is on the small side, but there is something for everyone. Most of the offerings presented a new & welcome twist on everyday foods & are somewhat different than most other New Orleans Restaurants .The flavors/foods were rich, but not heavy, & the ingredients were fresh. I felt the pricing was appropriate. The cocktail menu was excellent, with spirits to please everyone. The staff was FANTASTIC, the hostess graciously accommodated a change in our reservation & was eager to see that we were taken car of as quickly as possible. Our waiter, (I forgot his name, but he was so good looking!) anyway he worked very hard & efficiently, meeting our every need."

  • "I had pork shoulder, collard greens, and grits. It sounds like a meal my grandmother would have made, and it was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. I have no idea how they made such humble ingredients so exciting. I am craving the collards two days later. Loved this experience."

  • "We have been to Sylvain several times and always enjoy it. The food is excellent and different--a blend of old style with a modern twist. I had duck confit and duck sausage--yum. We also had the best appetizer plate with different cheese, sausage, etc. Delicious. Also good wine list. The servers are friendly and helpful. It's a small place, so good to make a reservation if possible, but they try to be accomodating."

  • "The antipasti was solid with a special watermelon and feta salad. The chicken sandwich as the only misstep and could have been aided by brining, although, still tasty, hot n paid with delicious fries. The table we were given had a great view onto the street but did have to be leveled. The waiters wine knowledge was great and he was helpful selecting dishes although he lead with a long 86 list. It's a popular place. Reservations necessary! A hipster hotspot."

  • "Food & Service were GREAT! We've walked past Sylain so many times (it's a block from Jackson Square) but before reading about it on OpenTable, we had no idea what we were missing. The person who said he ate there two nights in a row was right. The snapper over 'succotash' was melt-in-your-mouth magic -- hard to describe how utterly delicious this meal was! We are looking forward to returning to Sylain every time we return to N.O., but we will hope for a quiet table in the beautiful garden/courtyard (note: if you are hoping to really talk with your dining companions, note that it was packed and conversation was impossible on Saturday). The large group of people at the next table said lunch is a real treat, too."

  • "My husband and I went here for our anniversary. Unfortunately, we were packed in so tight and the restaurant was so loud that we ate as fast as we could. We headed out for drinks afterwards so we could actually talk. I was so looking forward to this dinner, that the whole thing was fairly disappointing."

  • "This was the 2nd time we came here. The 1st time, the food was really good but the service was terrible. We came back & the service was still terrible & the food was not as good as the 1st time. Burgers were not cooked inside & pasta tasted like hamburger helper. Will definitely not go back."

  • "Really enjoyed Sylvain. Food, service and overall experience were so very good we that had dinner there two nights in a row. Can't remember the last time that happened. Right up there with our most enjoyable dining experiences in New Orleans. The chef sure knows what he is doing. He clearly has alot of talent and a great team working with him in the kitchen. Service was great too."

  • "Lovely little spot in the Quarter. Service was great, but the food was outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the Brussels sprouts salad (unique!), the pork shoulder was divine (served in succulent patties with creamy grits and greens),and the pot de creme was rich and wonderful (can I have two?). The cocktail menu was innovative although I didn't fall in love with my choices. I'd try others next time. Only slight downside was the noise level. It was a little tricky for 4 of us to hear one another bit we managed. Bottom line: highly recommend!"

  • "We had a great summer New Orleans night at Sylvain; very warm so the patio was empty except us! Vey nice casual back garden that while tiny (and had a refridgerant unit that sometimes made a little noise) was evocitive of a local New Orleans experience. The cheese plate and chicken were delicious as was the watermelon sorbet and pot de creme. What made a difference? The calm genuine care and service provided by Eleanore who was never intrusive and always happy to answer the ridicvulous amount of questions we had."

  • "I'm from Portland, OR and was briefly in NOLA for work and wanted to see the French Quarter but avoid tourist-trap hades per my hipster-Portland food lust. Enter Sylvain! The food was fresh and delicious, my fried pork was not greasy and crisped-up perfectly--a difficult thing to come by in the tourist-destinations of the south, I've found. My dining companion's house-made sausage with duck was also fantastic, perfect texture. My friend is also a genuine sufferer of celiac disease, and the staff were very helpful in pointing out the gluten-free options for her."

  • "Food, service and ambience were all incredible!!! A beautiful restaurant tucked away with a unique menu. We will most definitely be going back on our next trip to New Orleans!!!"

  • "Happy to have found Sylvain on our most recent trip to New Orleans. They serve up great food in a classy but casual atmosphere. Service is friendly and it seems like the servers are as into the food as the diners are. Great recommendation of wine by our waiter when our first choice was not in stock. Food was southern with a modern twist. Salads are fresh and inventive; Mains are comfort food with small twists that keep it not boring. The ONLY grouse we had which was a minor one is they could use just a little more light - even our 8 year old with her young eyes had trouble reading the menu in the dim light and for us oldies it was nigh impossible let alone actually seeing the food."

  • "We accidentally stumbled upon this amazing find. Friendly accommodating staff , great service, and an inspired menu plus veggie friendly. My new favorite restaurant in NOLA."

  • "Every bite was satisfying and palette pleasing. We had nearly all the appetizers (wagyu, squash cakes, pate, cheese plate, Brussels sprout salad, etc) and each was uniquely the best. We had a table of 7 (very tight) but it worked and we were able to share entrees (pork Milanese or pan fried shoulder, wahoo fish, beef cheeks, yum!) again all were so good it was hard to pick a favorite."

  • "If you are looking for a place where the food it excellent in a loud party atmosphere then this is your place. Loud barely describes it. While I loved the food I would probably not return as the table behind us with six girls screamed "woo hoo" through our whole meal. Maybe I am just too old for that scene during my dining, but the staff was pleasant and the food well prepared."

  • "Cramped seating, uncomfortable chairs, menu was more geared towards food snobs, drinks were terrible!!! Nice ambiance though. Our waiter was great!! Thats about it!"

  • "I had heard good reviews at Sylvain, but it was superb. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. I had a white bean soup that was excellent, perfectly pureed and not thick and lumpy. The taste of rosemary was a good complement flavor. I had the fish special, a grilled black drum with an eggplant puree, tomatoes and green beans. THe flavors were very complex and well balanced. We finished the mmeal with a blueberry basil sorbet. Tart, not too sweet. The only issue was they were out rose and pinot noir from thewine list."

  • "Probably the best meal we had all weekend in the French Quarter. Menu items were inventive (duck leg and sausage, antipasti) and the craft drinks were perfect (Old Fashion, No Fun). Our server was particularly helpful with my allergies (nuts and shellfish). Our indoor table was excellent, but the outdoor patio looked worth trying next time."
