  • "Had heard good things about this restaurant, but it didn't live up to hype. We felt that the flavor profiles were a bit off and that the dishes lacked finesse. Seemed like the chef was trying too hard to do something different instead of doing the basics well. For example, the gnocchi with shortrib ragu was overpowered with smokiness, which was not described on the menu. It's not something you would expect or welcome in a ragu sauce. The sausage in the other pasta dish was dense and chewy...not very appetizing. Too bad."

We had cocktails at the bar & watched the skilled & personable bartender as he mixed & muddled & infused specialty cocktails. Large choice of spirits & wines. Bar itself is very attractive with small canning jars holding dried fruit, peppers, & other special ingredients. Small bottles with eye droppers contain liquid flavoring ingredients. The evening's specials were listed on a blackboard between the bar & open kitchen. Our water was professional & friendly. We had the Caesar salad garnished with crispy polenta, spinach based minestrone, bone in pork chop Milanese, pasta with rich lamb ragu, & fresh berries in balsamic reduction with coconut gelato. Superb"

  • "My wife and I ate here last weekend and really enjoyed it. We initially had reservations at another highly rated Italian restaurant down the street which was more "old school" Italian but SY was recommended to us instead so we switched. Very happy we did. Ambience was nice, service was excellent and the food was very good. We shared there roasted artichoke which was the best artichoke we had ever had. Perfectly cooked and wonderfully seasoned. Wife had a Mediterranean inspired salmon dish that was excellent and I had a pasta with a lamb ragu. I rarely eat pasta (cutting out some carbs!) and I was glad I allowed myself some pasta this night. It was excellent. We highly recommend this place."

  • "My husband and I dined at SY Kitchen for our first time at the recommendation of my Dad. SYK is perfectly situated in Santa Ynez, and is in what I can assume used to be a home now turned restaurant. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, we had the most wonderful and friendly customer experience. Our waiter was knowledgeable regarding the food and wine menus, and what paired well. I ordered the mushroom parpadelle and my husband the pork chop, and both were out of this world. My parpadelle was probably the best pasta I've had outside of Italy! I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "Go go the craft cocktails - stay for the food. We were so taken by the painstakingly built cocktails the first night, we had to return the following night to done with friends. Our server made sure to accommodate the wishes of a 4 year old diner - and made great recommendations for us. "

  • "We wish we'd ordered differently because we think we'll like the food better the next time around. I adored my warm octopus salad. It was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented, but my wild mushroom pasta was just so-so. Too starchy and not enough flavor. Maybe there was too much noodle with the papardelle. My husband's beet salad was delicious, but his mushroom pizza lacked sufficient tomato sauce, at least for his taste, so we both came away thinking that the next time we'll order different entrees. I saw several dishes go by that looked delicious (like the chicken) and next time we are in your area, we will order differently."

  • "Got to restaurant with reservation and seated promptly. Service was immediate and waiter was very helpful. Began with delicious artichokes. I ordered pasta of the day and my partner had pork chop. Pasta was full of flavor with obvious fresh ingredients. The pork chop was breaded and perfectly cooked. Again outstanding. We finished with a terramasu . Again the best we have had! "

  • "Don't get dressed up for this one, this is a shorts, t-shirt and flip flops sort of place. You might want to wait until the sun goes down to venture in for dinner....it's hot in there!. We reserved a table 2 -3 weeks ahead of time and still that got us a table in the very noisy kitchen/bar/reception area. We were seated beside two young girls who were already suffering the effects of heat, one was so overcome she had to sit outside for 5 minutes. Servers are all men, all very attentive all very good. The menu...well it's one of those restaurants where you have to look long and hard to find something, and still you're not sure. We tried a few dishes all were very fresh and completely tasteless, boys in the kitchen have you heard of spices !!"

  • "SY Kitchen was recommended by a local winemaker and we weren't disappointed. The waiter, David, suggested we should start with an octopus salad and it was more than wonderful - I'd more than love to have a one-on-one lesson so I could eat it at home all the time. Our pasta entrees were better than delicious, too. We ended our meal with a dessert of local, fresh berries - there's nothing better than that. Everyone on staff was top notch. Whenever they were nearby they quietly checked the table, occasionally asked if we wanted more water, etc., and generally made the evening a real success. We hope we get to return soon!"

Our waiter, Dave, was friendly and knowledgeable and made excellent suggestions. There were several nice specials as well as the many regular menu options. We sat in the covered porch area where it was fairly quiet even though there were groups on either side of us. This is one of those places that give you an upscale experience without any attitude or formality. Lovely."

  • "I have visited SY Kitchen once before & I fell in love w/ food,service&staff.I took my husband of two days there for a special honeymoon dinner.We had a lousy waiter who could not help w/ any food recommendations.The pizza was horrible &greasy.The waiter boxed our pizza togo not even recognizing since we didn't eat it maybe it wasn't good.We also ordered Spaghetti w/ Shrimp& calamari& the shrimp were still in shell& appear to resemble craw fish & they were sandy. The taste was good other than the sand in it.Not one person on staff congratulated us.The manager on staff was female& she never came by our table once to see how we were.She is definitely not Hans.If you happen to stop by to eat& you get a waiter w/glasses& Redish/Blonde hair.RUN!"

  • "It was our first time and we were not disappointed. The house made pasta was fantastic. Sometimes when pasta is made fresh it's soggy and not served al dente. Both hubby and I had different pastas and we both loved our meals We shared the artichoke appetizer and it was the best we have ever had. Our server recommended an Italian Nebbiolo and it was delicious. We will definitely return."
