Diner Reviews
  • "A friend who had been here recently recommended it, and I'm glad I took his suggestion. I made a 7:00 reservation for a Tuesday night - arrived 1/2 hour early, and they were happy to seat me right away. I'm glad they did - by the time I was finished, the place was packed, and the noise level was going up accordingly. The server was extremely solicitous and helpful, and the food was fantastic. Especially loved the shaved beet salad and the tiramisu was the best I've ever had - and imaginatively presented. Very casual atmosphere - shorts & flip-flops were in evidence, and kids were welcomed. I even shared bites of my dessert with the next table."

  • "Food is great here - it's my third time at the restaurant but first time for lunch. A little disappointed at the limited lunch menu...since the dinner menu was fantastic. However when I inquired about a dinner menu item that I had before at lunch, the waiter said that the cook will make it for us! It was perfect!"

  • "We tried a new route to the restaurant, so we were running late , called the restaurant, they happily told us we could be accommodated an hour later. When we arrived only 15 minutes late, they were still able to seat us. My husband says this is his favorite place. The special salads were fresh: caprese and watermelon/balsalmic. He had a nice pasta dish. The marscapone/ gelato dessert is always a must."

  • "We live on the East Coast, but visit often as we have family here. We always make time to have dinner or lunch at SY Kitchen whenever we are in town. The octopus salad is outstanding (and this says a great deal as I am typically not a fan of octopus). The pastas are all wonderful (even the gluten free)! If they have the duck ragu with porcini mushroom pasta on special when you visit - order it! You will be so happy! The salmon is always great too - with various preparations (this time was a salmon puttanesca - outstanding!). We typically order wine, but the cocktails are beautifully made with fresh ingredients. They even make their own bitters! Make your mouth happy and go to SY Kitchen!"

  • "Delicious food, excellent service and attention to detail and the diner all add up to a first class experience at SY Kitchen! Wish we lived closer to sample even more of the innovative yet classic Italian dishes the chef has to offer.. Will be dreaming of the handmade pasta on a regular basis! Spectacular wine list and consideration to a basic children's palate upon request make it all the better. Thank you SY Kitchen!"

  • "SY Kitchen was a five star experience all around! The service was wonderful, the food was unbelievable, the ambience of the place is romantic, cozy. When the waiter would describe the dishes, you could visualize each dish, and feel your mouth start to water with each detail. I recommended SY Kitchen to my family and friends, and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a 5 star restaurant!"

  • "My spaghetti al pesto with mussels was excellent. My wife's penne bolognese was too salty and relatively small. The lunch menu is pretty limited but does have some very creative items. The server was annoying and overcharged for my glass of wine."

  • "Animated and rather noisy, quite informal. The building is banal--used to be a real estate office. No table cloths, and unfortunately a TV on all the time. The food was carefully prepared--we had the excellent octopus and asparagus appetizer, one pasta dish, a pizza (so-so), and a lamb dish, accompanied by a simple red. The fresh berries with coconut gelato was truly delicious; the panna cotta so-so. The waiter knowledgeable and competent if not particularly welcoming. Overall the quality of the food is high, with some thoughtful touches, like the balsamic on the gelato, though nothing particularly creative, innovative or memorable, especially considering the steep price (90 dollars per person, including just 1 inexpensive bottle of wine)."

  • "The food was outstanding, as was the service. Grilled artichoke as appetizer was very flavorful, as were the daily specials. This new restaurant really passed the test. A large group was seated behind us and the noise level became deafening, but we were nearly done and left, while other people were re-seated. We will be back!"

  • "Suffice it to say that we had three nights in SY valley. Went to HP - my fav hangout - the first night and SY the second night. Cancelled our other res for night 3 and went back to SY Kitchen. Love the town, loved the outdoor lounge, loved Robert our server, loved the octopus salad, loved the carbonara, LOVED the cocktails and bar, lot of veg options if you ask. If you're going, book the front room for the energetic bar scene, the enclosed patio room for lovely ambiance and conversation, and the back room for larger parties."

  • "My husband and I visited Santa Ynez his birthday weekend. We loved SY kitchen so much...we ended up going back another night. The octopus appetizer was amazing as well as the fish dishes. Great local wine list. Highly recommended!"

  • "Loved our dinner at SY kitchen. The food was consistently good. The service is knowledgable and quality. My one complaint is that the tables are really close together and the room can get rather loud."

  • "Had heard good things about this restaurant, but it didn't live up to hype. We felt that the flavor profiles were a bit off and that the dishes lacked finesse. Seemed like the chef was trying too hard to do something different instead of doing the basics well. For example, the gnocchi with shortrib ragu was overpowered with smokiness, which was not described on the menu. It's not something you would expect or welcome in a ragu sauce. The sausage in the other pasta dish was dense and chewy...not very appetizing. Too bad."

  • "Delicious, inventive, fresh cuisine. Warm and welcoming. The scenic drive to get there is beautiful (via 154). worth going."

  • "This is the best restaurant I have been to in a long time, the food was outstanding and so fresh. The mixologist Alberto made amazing concoctions and did it with passion. I would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "The food was excellent! We had the asparagus soup. It was hot and delicious. The mushroom parpadilla was so yummy! I can't wait to have it again. Short rib special rich and delicious . Sat in the patio on bench seat it was very comfortable and we could cuddle."

  • "My wife and I dined at SY Kitchen this past weekend. This was out first visit to the restruant, but definitely not our last. The restraint staff was kind, courteous and passionate about the restruant and food. The food was excellent and the drinks were too. You must visit this nieghborhood gem!"

  • "En route from sf to Santa Barbara, we wanted to experience St Ynez valley. We lucked into finding a reservation at SY kitchen and had one of the best meals we have had in a while. Everything was delicious and creatively prepared. I recommend the restaurant highly."

  • "From the moment we arrived, we knew this would be a great dining experience. We had cocktails at the bar & watched the skilled & personable bartender as he mixed & muddled & infused specialty cocktails. Large choice of spirits & wines. Bar itself is very attractive with small canning jars holding dried fruit, peppers, & other special ingredients. Small bottles with eye droppers contain liquid flavoring ingredients. The evening's specials were listed on a blackboard between the bar & open kitchen. Our water was professional & friendly. We had the Caesar salad garnished with crispy polenta, spinach based minestrone, bone in pork chop Milanese, pasta with rich lamb ragu, & fresh berries in balsamic reduction with coconut gelato. Superb"

  • "My wife and I ate here last weekend and really enjoyed it. We initially had reservations at another highly rated Italian restaurant down the street which was more "old school" Italian but SY was recommended to us instead so we switched. Very happy we did. Ambience was nice, service was excellent and the food was very good. We shared there roasted artichoke which was the best artichoke we had ever had. Perfectly cooked and wonderfully seasoned. Wife had a Mediterranean inspired salmon dish that was excellent and I had a pasta with a lamb ragu. I rarely eat pasta (cutting out some carbs!) and I was glad I allowed myself some pasta this night. It was excellent. We highly recommend this place."

  • "My husband and I dined at SY Kitchen for our first time at the recommendation of my Dad. SYK is perfectly situated in Santa Ynez, and is in what I can assume used to be a home now turned restaurant. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, we had the most wonderful and friendly customer experience. Our waiter was knowledgeable regarding the food and wine menus, and what paired well. I ordered the mushroom parpadelle and my husband the pork chop, and both were out of this world. My parpadelle was probably the best pasta I've had outside of Italy! I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "Go go the craft cocktails - stay for the food. We were so taken by the painstakingly built cocktails the first night, we had to return the following night to done with friends. Our server made sure to accommodate the wishes of a 4 year old diner - and made great recommendations for us. "

  • "Food and service was great but too pricey. Wine was definitely too high in pricing. Many other places in the valley with same good quality and less expensive. Overall I was satisfied. "

  • "Don't get dressed up for this one, this is a shorts, t-shirt and flip flops sort of place. You might want to wait until the sun goes down to venture in for dinner....it's hot in there!. We reserved a table 2 -3 weeks ahead of time and still that got us a table in the very noisy kitchen/bar/reception area. We were seated beside two young girls who were already suffering the effects of heat, one was so overcome she had to sit outside for 5 minutes. Servers are all men, all very attentive all very good. The menu...well it's one of those restaurants where you have to look long and hard to find something, and still you're not sure. We tried a few dishes all were very fresh and completely tasteless, boys in the kitchen have you heard of spices !!"

  • "We wish we'd ordered differently because we think we'll like the food better the next time around. I adored my warm octopus salad. It was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented, but my wild mushroom pasta was just so-so. Too starchy and not enough flavor. Maybe there was too much noodle with the papardelle. My husband's beet salad was delicious, but his mushroom pizza lacked sufficient tomato sauce, at least for his taste, so we both came away thinking that the next time we'll order different entrees. I saw several dishes go by that looked delicious (like the chicken) and next time we are in your area, we will order differently."

  • "Since I'd love to support a local business, I've given SY Kitchen three tries. All three times I've gone there I've had the same result. The food was ok, and the service was slow and inattentive. Thumbs down."

  • "SY Kitchen was recommended by a local winemaker and we weren't disappointed. The waiter, David, suggested we should start with an octopus salad and it was more than wonderful - I'd more than love to have a one-on-one lesson so I could eat it at home all the time. Our pasta entrees were better than delicious, too. We ended our meal with a dessert of local, fresh berries - there's nothing better than that. Everyone on staff was top notch. Whenever they were nearby they quietly checked the table, occasionally asked if we wanted more water, etc., and generally made the evening a real success. We hope we get to return soon!"

  • "Fabulous experience.. Well worth the 45 minute drive to get there from Santa Barbara. Great food and wonderful service. However they were out of one item at 6Pm. The duck ravioli. That was a little disappointing. That is one of their best dishes. We got over it and really enjoyed the evening."

  • "Food is quite good and service is attentive. Ambiance is OK though a little noisy and the décor is overly simple. Some enhancement in the form of wall art and flooring would blunt noise. A worthy competitor to some fine restaurants in the immediate area with an individual menu that does not overlap with the competition. Creative cuisine artfully rendered."

  • "SY Kitchen will be on my list for all future visits to the Santa Ynez Valley. The food was interesting and fresh and delicious, and the service was excellent. Our waiter, Dave, was friendly and knowledgeable and made excellent suggestions. There were several nice specials as well as the many regular menu options. We sat in the covered porch area where it was fairly quiet even though there were groups on either side of us. This is one of those places that give you an upscale experience without any attitude or formality. Lovely."

  • "I have visited SY Kitchen once before & I fell in love w/ food, service&staff.I took my husband of two days there for a special honeymoon dinner. We had a lousy waiter who could not help w/ any food recommendations. The pizza was horrible &greasy. The waiter boxed our pizza togo not even recognizing since we didn't eat it maybe it wasn't good.We also ordered Spaghetti w/ Shrimp& calamari& the shrimp were still in shell& appear to resemble craw fish & they were sandy. The taste was good other than the sand in it.Not one person on staff congratulated us.The manager on staff was female& she never came by our table once to see how we were. She is definitely not Hans.If you happen to stop by to eat& you get a waiter w/glasses& Redish/Blonde hair.RUN!"
