Sutro's at the Cliff HouseAwesome anniversary experience! We really enjoyed our celebration as the experience was perfect on every level--view, food, service, bar drinks, dessert, and the history!6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMRomantic and FunWe had such a wonderful dinner and a very romantic time at Sutro's. The service was excellent and the food was delicious! We will return and also refer it to our friends.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMBetter Than It Has To Be!This place could just drift along on the amazing view, but it certainly does not just ride that wave:). The food is really well prepared and presented. Fine dining with a great view. A gem to enjoy whether for a special occasion or to bring out of town guests or to treat yourselves! Not a bad table in the house it seemed, although, admittedly we did have a window for 2 table and it was divine at lunch.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMWe'll go back!We celebrated our anniversary here. Delicious food and wine, friendly and courteous wait staff, and the view is unparalleled. We plan to go back.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat meeting place!Sister from Kansas, sister from Santa Rosa, sister from half moon bay, and me, Sacramento!
We all met up at the cliff house! Fabulous meeting spot! Could not have had a more wonderful view of the ocean! Bright cheery and delightful!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGood salmon, nice cocktail areaBacon crusted Scottish salmon was excellent. Good classic martini, too. Plenty of crab in the crab cakes. If you just want a drink with a view of the ocean, there's a quiet balcony away from the Bistro: very relaxing.6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMCliff HouseA friend recommended the Cliff House, kudos to him, lovely place, the food is fantastic, the ambience is fantastic, where else can you dine and watch the surf and ships headed off to unknown destinations!6/10/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of San Francisco's Best!Sutro's lived up fully to its reputation. I took my office team for dinner following a full day of challenging strategic planning and the experience was flawless. We watched surfers in the waves under bright sun while enjoying a fine Pinot Noir. The salmon was probably the most superbly prepared dish I have eaten in a long time. What a treasure to this fine city's locals and visitors.6/10/2013 12:00:00 AMAnniversary dinnerOn our first anniversary we travelled to San Francisco. At the recommendation of a friend we spent our anniversary at Sutro's at The Cliff House. Although a window seat could not be guaranteed they accommodated our request. The host sat us and followed it with "Congratulations". Dinner was fabulous. I had scallops and my husband went for the rib eye (go figure). Both plates were delicious. As we were sitting there enjoying the view and contemplating what must be on the dessert menu our waiter brought us a butterscotch pot de crème. Let me just say in one word - YUM! It was the perfect first anniversary dinner and would be for any other celebration as well.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMScenic ViewHave birthday lunch with my family. We have a table by window. The view is astonishing. No many choices on Sunday lunch menus (different from that on website) .The dessert is too sweet for us.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMNice surpriseI decided to take some out-of-town coworkers to the Cliff House at a friend's suggestion. I knew they would visit the wharf / Chinatown / North Beach so thought this would be a nice change even though I hadn't eaten here in years and wasn't quite sure what to expect. Our waiter was attentive and provided very helpful answers to our menu questions. We all started with oysters which were just as the waiter described: small and sweet. They were great. Two of us had the duck, and one had bouillabaisse (which seemed to be a very popular dish that night.) We all enjoyed our entrees. We split 2 deserts, which were quite good. And yes, you are paying extra for the view, but that is OK in my book.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMBay Dining DelightSutro's at the Cliff House is always a pleasurable choice when taking friends or family to experience the ambience of San Francisco in a relaxing, scenic atmosphere. The staff is friendly and treat out-of-town guests with a heart-felt welcome to our great city by the Bay. Reservations are a must on weekends, but seating is prompt. The menu has a variety of delicious choices, and if you have young ones with you, the staff is very accommodating in finding a kid-friendly portion from any of the offerings at either Cliff House restaurant. If you want to impress guests or just enjoy a nice outing on-the-town, Sutro's is an excellent choice at reasonably priced meals for a memorable afternoon or evening.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellentMy husband and I were favourably impressed by the quality of food, even at lunch. In particular the excellent bouillabaisse, perfect with a glass of the Chardonnay MacRostie.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent view from the restaurantExcellent view from the restaurant and the food and service was great.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent, as always!Sutro's has become a dine-about-town tradition for us!6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOK, but my expectations were higherI heard of this place before, and on my last visit to San Francisco I couldn't get a table... So I guess my expectations were higher. It is gourmet, but I've been to much better places (in terms of good food).6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat View - Poor foodWe came here due to the nice view of the ocean and only to find that the food was not up to par. The warm bread however, was really good. The rib eye was very rough, not juicy or tender. The raised pork was salty and mediocre and the halibut was very dry. The restaurant needs to beef up their food and have a better chef. Because with the quality of food going at this rate, this restaurant will not last. I will definitely not be back for the food.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding, food needs some workThe outstanding view and excellent service make up for faults in the food. Paprika Prawns were the bomb, flavor-wise, but $16 for 5 noticeably small prawns seems a bit of a stretch. The Seared Scallops were done perfectly, but there were only 3 of them, and not the size you'd expect in a $34 entree. The fried green tomato shrimp-stuffed padron peppers (4) were way to big for the tiny finger-sized shrimp they capped. Bottom line, the plates should be a bit more impressive at this price, but the Cliff House is a gem overall and this review should be no reason not to enjoy one of the world's great dining spots.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Experience~I would recommend going just for the experience and wonderful view from the restaurant.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMVery NiceWe have dined here several times for lunch when we visit the DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park. Obviously a fabulous view and lots of activity. We had the double crab sandwich, the crab cakes and the smoked prawns. All prepared perfectly. Will return again on our next visit to GGP.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMEach Dish Was UniqueOur group of 4 used the Summer special fixed price dinner. All the dishes were remarkably good: flavorful and well presented.
A striking room with dramatic views.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyed a celebration mealEnjoyed a celebration meal with family. The service and attention to detail were spot on. We had a very nice table - the room is extremely bright with the sun reflection off the ocean - had to wear sunglasses inside, but certainly not a complaint. The warm, fresh baked bread was delicious. The crab cake appetizer was also delicious, they were resting on slices of fried avocado - a tasty surprise. The bouillabaisse was good but not exceptional. The seared scollops were outstanding - large and perfectly seared, they were served with fried green tomatoes and shrimp stuffed in peppers. The combination was very interesting however the fried green tomatoes were too thick and undercooked and the peppers to spicy hot.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMFIRST TIME HEREWE WILL BE COMING BACK TO TRY THE OTHER ITEMS ON THE MENU :-)6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMSpecial DayA group of us went for my sister's birthday. We requested an window view. At first there was no table but the hostess made arrangements for us to have one. She found us to let us know. She was very sweet. The food was very good but pricey so we would say use it for a special occasion. Our server knew the menu and service was excellent. It was a wonderful celebration.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food, but poor serviceWe arrived in time for sunset and our table was against the window with a perfect view! I was very pleased because when I called and explained that the meal was to celebrate an engagement, they told me they could not guarantee a window seat. The view was spectacular! The food was also very good. For an appetizer, I ordered the oysters. They were tiny, but still good. The tuna tartare was amazing! Also, our main courses were great. I ordered scallops which were perfect. The only problem is that they were supposed to be served with fried green tomatoes. The fried green tomatoes did not resemble anything similar to a fried green tomato. The service was terrible. A bottle of champagne was ordered by a friend and it never arrived.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMA must when visiting San FranciscoCliff House is one of those restaurants with the million dollar view that you'll remember for a very long time. The food was o.k. for San Francisco standards, but save room for deserts and coffee those where amazing. I would highly recommend booking a reservation for sure, especially after a long day of site seeing. The dress is California casual.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMBeautiful venue to have aBeautiful venue to have a dinner and watch the ocean and the sunset5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderfulI took a friend who had been not too well lately and the staff were so kind and attentive and the food excellent it gave her a memorable day.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazingI've been here on several special occasions. If you're not used to what I like to call fancy dining, it's not too ridiculously expensive and gives an amazing view with amazing food and service.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was very good and soFood was very good and so was the view. Service was excellent.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAn experienceThis is an iconic location with great history of the Sutro Baths of the late 1800s/1900s. Good old-school service and well executed food. Great views should be expected.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways love it here.Favorite place to go to eat whenever I am in the city and have time to go to the beach. Great view of the ocean, big picture windows elegant service in the downstairs, comfortable seating upstairs in the Bistro (cafe).5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place, with a view, unless thWe had planned this stop about 3 years ago, we just didn't plan on the fog. Could only see out about 100'. The menu seemed high priced, and the service was not all that great. Getting waited on seemed to be a challenge. The food was good, although too much of it. Not a good plan for the price.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAn SF tradition lives onThe Cliff House seems to have adapted to the times. A really special restaurant. Excellent bread. Some half bottles on the wine lists. The split pea and onion soup was very tasty, and had obviously been made from fresh peas. The halibut was entree was of the finest quality. The lemon souffle was really lemony although the use of balsamic vinegar may not be that helpful. Excellent service5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat view, delicious foodGreat view, delicious food and a very attentive staff. The perfect place for a celebration!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect choice! We recently dined at the Cliff house for my husband's birthday. It was the perfect choice! We were able to get a window seat, which even though it was foggy at first, was breathtaking. The food was great, service excellent, we can't wait to go back again!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMCliff top-notch diningCliff House boasts a great ocean view and it does not disappoint - when there's no fog. We booked for 5.00pm and because we arrived a little early we sat at the bar and enjoyed one of the numerous, reasonably priced, hand-crafted cocktails. We were escorted to a table overlooking the Pacific Ocean in full sun and it was stunning. The service was prompt and friendly - very Californian! We ordered the Maple Leaf Duck Breast, sweet potato latkes, mustard greens with a cherry-brandy-rhubarb compote. Delicious! The wine list was extensive to suit all pockets.
We would certainly recommend this restaurant for the views and food.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMA beautiful, blustery eveningA beautiful, blustery evening at this scenic restaurant was made even more enjoyable by Sutro's attentive yet unobtrusive service. Every time I managed to take my eyes off my dining partner and the tossing seascape to scan the reaches of the room I noted my waiter's concerned glance. A mere gesture had him by our table in moments. I managed a destination restaurant in Manhattan in the 80s; I would be proud of this staff -- from the welcoming and accommodating host to the deft busser. Our oceanic repast was splendid. Thank you.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMProm night heaven! My Father booked dinner for four for my prom, 5:30 pm on saturday memorial weekend. They could seat us right away or a short wait for a table by the window. This place was amazing! The view was great and we got a seat away from the window (which was good because the sun was setting and really intense by the window) the view away from the window was great too without the glare. My best friend and I had the salmon..one word AMAZING! My date had the artichoke ravioli and it was very good and my friends date had the shrimp and scallops was also very good. I told my parents they had to go check it out too!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMa rare GOOD touristy restaurant!GREAT food! Wonderfully presented! Best Bread (Acme Bakery)! and the VIEW: San Francisco's beaches and the ocean!
As a longtime resident - I was hesitant but it turned out to be a first-class operation: table-seating in 3 minutes AT the windows!!!
Highly recommended but note: a bit pricey but worth it.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMSutro'sBiggest inconvenience is getting a cab to the hotel. Moreso than the standard San Francisco "where is a cab when you need it". They have a great sunset. Windows need to be cleaned5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, beautiful, history, WOWWe loved the gracious wait staff and the exciting menu. The desserts are wonderful; make sure you save room.
Every course was beautifully presented and the wait staff anticipated needs so graciously. We found the menu to be
varied and enticing. We enjoyed the jazz in the background. Each menu item we had was a flavor treat!5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a party of 4, and allWe had a party of 4, and all were very happy with the food, service, and especially the view, which was spectacular on a beautiful evening. We frankly didn't expect the food to be nearly as good as it was. I had the featured Petrale sole, which was nicely prepared. Others also had seafood, which they enjoyed, and a steak, which looked great.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding ServiceOur family dined at Sutro's to celebrate our daughters graduation. The view was breathtaking, the food was incredibly delicious and service was outstanding. Our waitress made great suggestions, was very attentive and took the time to chat with us. All in all it was a very memorable night.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat anniversary spota great lunch spot to celebrate our anniversary. love the panoramic ocean view on a clear sunny day.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMMemorable in the best wayThe scenery is to die for. The food is incredibly satisfying. Get a 5pm reservation and get there a bit early to guarantee a seat by the window.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMDining by the OceanI was given a window seat of my choice after I made a reservation and request for a window. Very peaceful and pleasant experience. Although there was a lot of people talking, it was still peaceful! Classy place! A real gem in SF5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGood ambiance but service was somewThe service was disappointing for a group of 8. Taking menu orders was slow (about 20 minsutes for the servor to show up) even for a luncheon after 2:00 PM and with mildly busy crowd. The meals were delivered about 45 minutes after ordering and most were in less than ideal temprature (mildly warm) though they were tatsy. The servor also tried to force more appetizers making it somewhat awkward; this showed lack of professionalisms. For the price of the meals and the mandatory 18% gratuity charged for a group of less than 10, the overall service was a lacking in culinary standards. I would still rate the overall experince as good +.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMThe menu is very limited butThe menu is very limited but there is enough choice to make ordering easy and the preparation of everything is done very well.. This is the second time we have been to Sutro in the last year and everything on the menu was the same. There were two specials and one of our party was very pleased with it. You just can't beat Sutro for the view and the restaurant inside is beautiful. It is a very dramatic and beautiful place to dine.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent friendly service,Excellent friendly service, food quite good, beautiful sunset.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
