A word from Sutro's at the Cliff House
Perched above the waves of San Francisco’s picturesque Ocean Beach the historic Cliff House is home to the stunning Sutro’s at the Cliff House restaurant. With the most spectacular ocean views in the City and contemporary American cuisine that draws heavily from the bounty of the ocean visible from every angle of the restaurant, dining at Sutro’s is the quintessential San Francisco experience. The menu features local seafood offerings like whole roasted Petrale sole, Dungeness crab, and local shellfish as well as fresh produce farmed using sustainable practices. The Cliff House also offers the more casual Bistro Restaurant (no reservations), open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the Sunday Champagne Buffet (must phone for reservations). Continued

  • "great for a low key evening out, good food, good service"

  • "I hosted a wedding reception for some dear friends; a small group of 13. We all noticed the superior service we received from everyone on staff at Sutro's, in particular, our server Demitri, who was remarkably fast, friendly and flexible. The reception at your restaurant made a special day even more special!"

  • "Staff was super friendly, , food very good, ambience and decor was very current, view of ocean was great. Loved variety of food choices."

  • "There were 5 of us who enjoyed a wonderful time. We arrived earlier than our reservation and we waited at a table at the bar. All the servers were gracious and prompt. We never noticed the wait. We were seated shortly at the very best table - a corner window with the view all around us. Two of us talked about how we always took our Dads here, and a third is returning with her Dad. The food was excellent with large portions of crab on the Louie salad. The crab cakes were delicious and the tuna tartare was awesome and the table side preparer did a great job on the mix of condiments. We are planning a return trip in June... all five of us. Thank you very much."

  • "Our waiter was very nice but sloppy service. They were out of the wine we asked for. The food was solid but nothing to rave about. For such an amazing spot they could do more in the details to fix this. We wrote a note about why we were there. No one bothered to mention the special occasion."

  • "The first thing one notices is the first class view of the Pacific Ocean and the entrance to the Golden Gate. The bartenders must be first rate because my Old Fashioned was perfect. Lots of tourists of course, but the food is fit for locals as well as our City's visitors. Try the Mussels in a wonderful Peanut Sauce. Our Scallops and Halibut were both first rate. The wine list is representative of California's favorites. Don't let the tourists be the only ones to enjoy this gem."

  • "The view is what You pay for. Food is Ok but nothing extraordinary. Dessert was the best of the dinner, We had an excellant lemon frozen suffle. Service needs a lot of improvement, waiters are slow and not Very attentive."

  • "Service and ambience were great. The most disappointing Caesar Salad I've ever had and I eat them a lot. Where were the anchovies? Run out of garlic? Really, this and the Cliff House is a SAN FRANCISCO THING! What the hey?! unacceptable. other than that, it was all good, but don't adjust things for the tourists when your guests may be long-time residents of the City and restaurant people, as I and my guest are. As far as the Caesar you should "

  • "The restaurant is overpriced and has a very limited menu. We had to remind the waiter to bring the wine we had ordered. Although I had booked a table two weeks in advance for a birthday celebration, we still we're not given a window table. In short, we were disappointed."

  • "We went here for lunch after hiking at Lands End. We got a great table by the window with a great view of the ocean. Server was nice but completely overworked. It was nearly impossible to get his attention. Food took extremely long time to arrive...nearly 25 minutes. The lobster bisque was bland. The Croque Madame was inedible. The egg was overlooked..the ham dry and old. Go here for a drink and french fries. Complete tourist trap!"

  • "We went with our kids and out of town parents that were visiting. All three generations enjoyed the lovely lunch. The asparagus appetizer is wonderful!"

  • "Our server was outstanding, stayed on top of what we needed without hovering, took pride in his work, and made the occasion very special."

  • "Our dining experiance at the Cliff House was less than ideal. Very slow service and the waiter seemed like the job was below him. Unhelpful, short with is attitude, and the Rock Cod we ordered was so terrible we could hardly eat it (only ate one piece). Very oily and lacking in any seasoning. We came here for the view however expected a decent meal to boot, too bad that was not the case."

  • "What a delightful lunch. Fantastic view. Hadn't been there in years and has been nicely remodeled. Especially glad we had reserved on line thrust Open Table.. first we were able to add to our reservations 3 people while we were on the go. Second, when my husband accidentally left his credit card there, the restaurant was able to contact us."

  • "As with so many restaurants with a great view the service and food just did not measure up. The wine list is purely American with no sommelier available that night. The stemware mediocre. The server too busy to be attentive. The food was actually pretty good. We found the volume of the music to inhibit conversation. The view is lovely."

  • "This restaurant is a must for the San Francisco traveler due to the incredible cliffside view, but the food was mediocre and the price was completely out of control. We had 2 basic lunch sandwiches, one appetizer and no drinks and the bill was $71.00. They have an incredible wine list, but to give you an example they price 98-05 Opus One at $595-685 per bottle....these range in price from $250-350 max in most restaurants and bars."

  • "Amazing View with impeccable service and gourmet food. The days I have dined for lunch, have had incredible weather...only to add to the ambiance."

  • "I had a good time except for the high temperature and stuffy interior on April 7, 2014 at 6:30 - 7:30 PM. They didn't turn on the A/C nearly enough especially for window tables which ours was and which the sun greatly warmed. Considering the prices this is unexcusable."

  • "A great place for a sunset romantic dinner, as long as you have 2 hours for the terribly slow and unattentive service. Food was great and the location is terrific."

  • "Sutro was amazing for sunset. I've wanted to go to this restruant for 14 years. It was my GF's birthday and we ate dinner. The server took my order wrong on one instance and on another I received a well done $42 steak when I ordered a medium rare steak. On top of that, the quality of meat was not very good. I sent it back, and was still charged 1/2. Yes, I ate some of the steak before I realized that it wasn't cooked the way I ordered it. Not even close! Other issues with the food and service, but I don't want to waste more of my time reviewing this location. Do not go for the food. The hostess was very nice."

  • "Place was great. Did hear someone's dog barking during dinner inside the restaurant. Was a little unexpected? I do know that the ocean beach area is very dog friendly but having one barking in a restaurant where you are spending a couple hundred bucks is weird. The restaurant was also out of McCallan 12 Scotch which I also thought was unusual for a pricier establishment. Otherwise everything else was great."

  • "In spite of the fact that it was after dark when we dined, this was a nice experience. The food was better than I expected; I guess I always assume that restaurants with great views can skimp on the food quality. The seafood was well prepared and the service was attentive enough without being stuffy. I'll go back, next time with an earlier reservation!"

  • "I love this place. Spectacular view. Awesome food. Friendly and accomodating staff (I brought my 2 year old toddler!). Just allow ample time for parking.."

  • "You can't beat the scenery - rain or shine. They've done a very nice job of pairing that with a simple but elegant interior setting. They also have the good sense to stick to nicely-prepared seafood dishes. For anyone who comes to that restaurant, it is all about the ocean."

  • "It's rare to find a restaurant with a spectacular view that also has excellent food and service."

  • "A special setting with excellent food, service, wine list and view of the Pacific. Every aspect was outstanding!"

  • "I took two friends there for a birthday lunch - they both had seafood entrees and found the food remarkable - some of the best they've had - both in quality and presentation. I had the Steak Frites, which was very unremarkable - an almost flattened piece of beef - though cooked ok. The Ramos' Fizz's at Sutro's are probably the best in the Bay Area; the desserts are exquisite and the presentation is also exquisite. Service is outstanding. And of course, during daylight hours, the view is without equal - the waves of the Pacific hitting the shores, the ruins of Sutro Baths, watching ships approach the Golden Gate - and the headlands of marin."

  • "The view and service was very good. I had the Halibut which was good but average, Ciopiono was were good and well presented with soft shell crab on top (recommend adding a bit more spice to sauce as we did), Steak was also very good. We ordered most appetizers since we were entertaining customers. Recommend the Ahi Tuna and Mussels which were excellent. Oysters were tiny , although tasty, I am used to Tamales bay and someone needs to pick out better oysters. Might recommend that they add a couple additional non fish appetizers since we entertain customer regularly and some do not like fish. Basil Sorbet ice cream! Very pleasant meal, half price wine on Tuesday nights was a nice surprise. Valet Parking was convenient."

  • "Our server did not hurry us when members of our party were late arriving. The food was excellent for all 4 members of the party;the view of Seal Rock is outstanding. Service was efficient and friendly. Excellent mussels, superb crab-artichoke ravioli; and tasty desserts."

  • "Had a wonderful dinner Friday night at the Sutro Cliff House. I was a little surprised to end up in the Sutro room because I thought I was reserving for the upstairs bistro and so I was dressed a little more casually than I would have liked to have been for such a nice restaurant. There were others in casual wear so I guess it was ok :) Food and service were excellent - Michael was wonderfully attentive. Spring pea soup was flavorful and delicious and the crab and artichoke ravioli were perfectly cooked and seasoned. An extensive wine list provided many choices to round out the meal and a beautiful sunset capped off the experience"

  • "I reserved a 5:30 table for four, as we were bringing out of town guests for sunset dinner. Cliff House didn't disappoint. Our wiindow table request was honored; the fog stayed home; the ambience allowed for easy conversation until 7 when "Jazz" started filtering down from upstairs in the bar; all four of us raved about our meals; waiter was great. And sure, we paid for it, but with careful ordering and splitting salads and limiting drinks, it was well worth it. Do go! Perfect place to show visitors the beauty of our City."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "The view is incomparable, of course. And this evening's meal was delicious. The artichoke and crab ravioli was scrumptious! Thank you for a meal we spoke about for several days afterwards."
