Diner Reviews
  • "We frequently visit sushi samba in Vegas, but Chicago is not a match for the other location. Mainly the service was lacking- first we were seated well after our reserved time, secondly our birthday girl was not honored in any way although her name and occasion were given upon entering the venue. The food is good but not exquisite therefore I feel it is way overpriced."

  • "From the food to the ambiance to the service, this was a great dining experience. Can't say enough about the Neo Tokyo roll and the freshness of the sashimi. The deconsructed cheesecake dessert was beautiful, fun and delicious! Highly recommend!"

  • "We had a nice time here, waitress was very friendly and helped explain the somewhat confusing menu. The ambience was fantastic, it has a really neat layout, cool lighting, etc... Would be great for a big group of girls looking to grab sushi. The food was pretty good, definitely have had better and definitely have had worse but I would definitely return to Sushi Samba, especially for their sea bass skewers and fried oysters!"

  • "I had been to Sushisamba a couple of years ago. The food was outstanding & even better than I remembered. Our server really knocked it out of the park recommending sake that is similar to what my friend and I like in wine! I would highly recommend Sushisamba"

  • "Calamari, sea bass appetizers were fantastic. sushi good, but not outstanding. Maybe the good Sushi chefs don't work on Thursday night? Good service, good desserts."

  • "This is one of our family's favorite restaurant and have dined here several times in the last six months. The atmosphere is modern, but relaxed and warm, with orange interior which gives it a lovely glow at night. Our family has never had sushi here since there are so many other interesting rolls and tapas style appetizers. Fish is very fresh and the sauces are very innovative. Great place to come with a group since the food can be easily shared. Service is quick and efficient. Only thing I find a little awkward is their restroom. The men and women have separate entrances but the wash area is separated by a clear glass so when you come out of the individual stalls sometimes you see a guy standing right next to you when you least expect it!"

  • "With a group of ten women, we all tried different drinks and one was more delicious than the rest. The decor is BEAUTIFUL and they have a gluten free menu!"

  • "The restaurant meet my expectations, was a little expensive that I was expecting. It was my first time there and I was a little lost about what I can eat? The waitress didn't take enough time to explain me about the meals."

  • "Never knew sushi could be fused with Peruvian food. They did it very well for my business party of 11. Everyone was very impressed. Small plates were awesome to share."

  • "Love the variety of the fusion menu. Very attentive, charismatic server. Funs space and decor. My only disappointment would be that the restaurant was mostly empty on a Thursday night. It lacked vibrance. I would definitely try again. Maybe a little more happening on a weekend."

  • "This is the second time we dined at SushiSamba and it is still outstanding. The first time we were with a large group and at our waiters suggestion we let the chef design our meal. This time there were just 2 of us and we had fun trying designing a meal of sushi small plates and Robata. The service was attentive without being overbearing. Our waiter and the manager both had menu suggestions and were willing to answer any questions. On Sat. night they had a live DJ setting the mood which was upbeat latin music. A great casual place for a couple or a larger group."

  • "Lighting, decor & music made for great ambiance; the food was excellent especially the sea bass robata with the Peruvian corn; since the food comes out as it is cooked, which also seems to be as it is ordered, be sure to tell your waiter/waitress to put the order in in stages not all at once"

  • "The service was absolutely awful! My fiancé and I ordered calamari to start. She ordered chicken teriyaki for a main, and I ordered a few different rolls. After about 20 minutes we didn't receive our calamari. We couldn't tell our server because she was nowhere to be found. Finally after 30 minutes from ordering, my fiancé's chicken was served (not by our server) so we still couldn't tell her about the lack of calamari. She sat and waited for my sushi to come before she started eating which took about an extra 10 minutes. My sushi finally came, but of course not served by our server. When she finally came around I asked for the bill so we could leave ASAP. Of course she charged us for the calamari that she had no clue was not served."

  • "The waiter was a little over the top, but some people enjoy that level of enthusiasm so I'm not saying it was a negative. He was good at catching a hint and backing off when we were in conversation. The food was really interesting and I enjoyed everything I tried. The dumplings were the best I've ever had, the taquitoes were interesting in a good way and I tried two sushi rolls that were sensational. One with King Crab and pears (and other stuff) and another with lobster, avocado and other stuff. Just sensational! Plus, it was very reasonably priced to boot! I'll definitely be returning to SushiSamba the next time I'm in the Windy City."

  • "Food was very good, but there are many other sushi places more reasonable in cost. Wine portions were ridiculously small, which caused the price to increase. The wine bottle markup was absurd. Kim Crawford Sauvingnon Blanc sells at stores for $11.99. It was $ 58! We left hungry not withstanding a bill over $250 for 4 people."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our trip here during restaurant week. The food was all delicious - very creative combinations of the different cuisines. Some of the two-person tables are pretty close together, and so we didn't like that we were quite so aware of everything that was going on with the couple next to us...but we could probably have requested a more private table (in retrospect). The portions are not large, but it's more of a tasting/tapas kind of place - and so be prepared. Presentation was lovely."

  • "We love Sushisamba - always a great place to go with friends or on a date. As always, we had very good service! And the food/wine were great!"

  • "pros: - easy seating - colorful decor cons: - went with a couple of friends for restaurant week last year, but either everyone ordered off the RW menu, or the regular, no mixing - i ordered a kobe beef dish, only to find that they didn't have any (and we were only one of a handful of occupied tables for lunch!) - because of the mishaps, were given a couple of complementary desserts...only to have them included on the bill and had to ask the waiter to remove them not the worst experience, but obviously not the best."

  • "Fod was excellant, our service was not. Waitor forgot parts of our order... hardly ever came over to check on drinks."

  • "We were excited to head here during restaurant week and try out the menu. It was pretty empty when we arrived at 8p on a Friday- never a good sign. Our waitress was attentive, maybe even too much so, and got frustrated we weren't ready to order even though they had only provided 1 drink menu for 5 people to choose from. Our food came out sporadically, which meant some of our group had to sit and wait up to 10 minutes for everyone else to be served before eating. The sushi was good, but everything else we had was not. So overpriced and not worth the awkward service."
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "The restaurant itself needs updating. Carpet is worn, chairs and sofas worn. Light fixtures are great! Their sea bass is excellent, but the rest of the food is mediocre."
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "Some items were awesome, while others were sub-optimal (duck breast was tough). Service was a bit over the top while slow at times. The computer terminal behind my wife's head created conversations that competed with ours. The biggest thing was the chairs. Every time someone scooted in his/her chair, a horrible squeak went up our spines. We won't be going back any time soon."

  • "This place has gone downhill over the years, e.g. bathroom had really cheap paper towels, not the strong, soft kind in nice restaurants. the ceviche was made with mayonnaise--possibly the same sauce as they use in spicy makis. Though I still like the decor, it seriously needs updating . The staff was excellent, though, and very friendly. The service was kind of slow considering how uncrowded the restaurant was. I was glad I didn't have to get back to work."

  • "I've heard such great things about Sushi Samba, so when their name popped up for Restaurant Week, I knew for sure I wanted to go. When our party of six arrived, there were only 2 other people in the restaurant. Our server acted like we were more of an problem rather than guests. It took over 25 minutes to get our appetizer, another 20 to get our main dish and then only about 10 for our dessert. They brought the appetizers and main dishes out at separate times (it was not tapas style) so people's food got cold while waiting for the others to get their food. To top it all off, the food just wasn't very good. Overall, all six of us were pretty disappointed with our meals :/"

  • "We chose SUSHISAMBA because of their restaurant week menu. I was intrigued by the fusion of Brazilian, Japanese, and Peruvian cuisine. I think the fusion aspect is really well done. They aren't forcing together flavors that don't fit like some fusion places. Instead they chose aspects of each cuisine that meld nicely together. I was incredibly pleased with everything that both my husband and I sampled. The appetizers were unique and delicious, the sushi was wonderfully fresh, and the desserts were a great pallet cleanser. I also really enjoyed the vast cocktail menu. In addition to the sushi sampler for our appetizer, we had the Pacific roll which was my favorite thing of the night. Overall a great experience."

  • "Came here for dinner on restaurant week. The food was very good, but the experience was really disorganized. After our appetizers, one of our main courses came out and only 20 minutes later, the second main course came. I was already finished with my food before my husband got his which really ruined the experience. If they figure out the timing in their kitchen, it could be a very fun place to go. Very modern decor, and there's a dj in the bar area. The sushi was delicious, but without a deal it is very pricey."

  • "It is possible for me to find better sushi, but this place is still at the top every time I eat there. I do prefer a more traditional sushi menu, but none the less the fish is always fresh and the flavors are right on. Atmosphere at this place is really where it excels, I always leave happy!"

  • "You might think the menu would take a backseat to a restaurant as gorgeous as Sushi Samba with a large bar area, a huge circular sunken sushi bar in the middle of the restaurant and an enormous rear seating area with super cool lighting fixtures and a vibe that screams, "hip place for drinks after work yall"! The food is good though with the menu inspired by sushi, Peruvian, and Brazillian cuisine. I went during restaurant week for lunch and was really impressed by their salmon cerviche and Japanese udon noodles. I can't wait to check out the after work scene!"

  • "Cool atmosphere and some of the freshest sashimi I've had in Chicago. A bit on the expensive side for what they're serving, but the service and ambiance definitely make up the difference. Great for a date."

  • "Went here on a saturday night, had reservations for 9, wasn't seated until about 9:30, which really wasn't much of a problem because we could tell they were pretty busy. The sushi was probably the best I had ever had, the "El Topo" roll was definitely my favorite. If you're looking for a quiet and romantic evening, this probably isn't the place for you... But, if you're looking for a fun saturday night, the music is great and so is the bar."

  • "When we went to the restaurant (party of 2) there were only 2 other tables with people in the whole restaurant. With that said, the service was pretty bad. Our waitress chatted it up with another co-worker verses checking on the tables. I actually had to call her over a few times because she neglected to check on us herself. It was as if her attitude reflected the lack of need to work since there were so few tables. The sushi chefs also chatted it up in between making orders making the food coming out very slow. It was unreal. I had to apologize to my date on behalf of the restaurant because I talked up the place beforehand. The food was good, but I won't go back. For a better date night, go elsewhere."

  • "I was looking for a fun place for adults and kids alike -- without the usual chicken fingers and spaghetti options -- and sushisamba delivered! I chose the restaurant specifically after reading about their fun bento box kids' meals and they were as cute and special as I had hoped. The colorful restaurant made it fun for the kids and I was less worried about being disruptive because of the loud ambience. I thought the wait staff tried hard, but I still got the impression that they're not accustomed to seeing kids and they made them a little nervous. Overall, would definitely recommend!"

  • "We were quite disappointed about the service when we were leaving the restaurant. Having been eating, drinking and giving tips for a total of 360 USD (4 persons) one would have expected the crew to be helpful when we asked them to get a taxi for us, but several of them were totally uninterested even though some of them were sitting next to the entrance doing nothing. They just told us we could grab one on the street. After telling them again that we expected them to bother, one of the women in the crew did so and went outside to help us. Not good enough for a restaurant that exclusive! Food very good though!"

  • "I went there with a party of ten, this was my 2nd time at this location. food is always good, management was excellent before this time it was just good. If we were not there it would have been more than half empty on a Saturday night. I would recommend this place anytime food and service is good."
