Diner Reviews
  • "It is hard to find good sushi at reasonable prices, and I love Sushi Yasaka for this. The Sushi Deluxe is the best deal around, with very 9 pieces of very fresh fish plus a roll for about $20. The rolls are great, so dinner can be just over $10 for 2 fantastic rolls. I've been to so many places around the UWS and Morningside Heights that are moderately priced but the fish tastes old... but Sushi Yasaka is fantastic!"

  • "They have a $45 omakase that allows for accommodation. Despite the low price, the presentation and quality is absolutely beautiful and thoughtful. Service is solicitous and gracious, even for single diners."

  • "My neighborhood has a restaurant to boast about. Great service, amazing fresh fish, the best seaweed salad. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Lunch an especially good value. Chirashi for me, the salmon combo for my wife."

  • "Excellent raw fish. Greasy Tempura. Much too noisy!"

  • "Nice decor and atmosphere, delicious king salmon and umi, and very tasty soba noodles. Sadly, the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls were lacking. It was more like eating a mayo on rice, we could barely taste any fish. If it wasn't for that we would definitely come back. Otherwise average place, decent sushi. Guess you get what you pay for."

  • "What a surprise , this is my new favorite sushi restaurant. Fish was fresh and tasty, rice perfect! Enjoyed everything!"

  • "It is such a nice feeling when you can feel Japan without going on a 13-hour flight. Their sushi is amazing!! You must try!! My favorite menu is Chirashi lunch."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Fresh sushi with quality and variety comparable to the better known (and more expensive) places. Order "omakase" to get the chef's picks of the day's best."

  • "Good Japanese food and excellent service in this busy local restaurant."

  • "Sushi Yasaka never disappoints. The fish is always fresh and practically melts in your mouth! There is nothing romantic or trendy about this place, it really is just for people who appreciate amazing sushi!"
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "Sushi Yasaka is consistently good and reasonably priced. It's just the kind of place we need in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, other places like it were closed because of condo and other construction. Thankfully we have Sushi Yasaka."

  • "This place serves some of the best sushi around at the best prices possible. The mini-omakase at $24 is some of the most delicious fish available. They also have a larger plate for larger eaters, or those who can't get enough of the extraordinarily high quality served here. Comparable to the high priced places near the UN. I almost hate to write this review because it's already difficult to get in...."

  • "Always very very fresh and delicious. We had a reservation and the table was ready. I love sushi and this place hits the mark."

  • "The sushi is exceptional. I've never tasted anything like it, but then I'm only nine and am exploring life and food. The waitress was very patient and helped us select just the right food."

  • "The food was actually not bad, but the service is aweful. I would not go back there again because of the rude service. I did not get tea nor dish for soy sauce much after food was served. Of course I had to ask. Then appetizer came. I should get them without asking. Any restaurant business should know customers go back not just for food, nice service as well."

  • "Thus far, Sushi Yasaka has the most melt in your mouth sushi that I have tasted in NYC."

  • "Arrived on-time for our 19:45 reservation for two. The place was PACKED. Once sat down, the server was quick and attentive to take our order. I had the Miyabi and my friend two rolls. For the pricing point and quality of food, the Miyabi was excellent. Definitely on par with quality with the "usual sushi" places in Tokyo, but noticeable for frequent sushi eaters. I want to try again, perhaps the omakase, but the assorted "combos" they have in the menu appear sufficient."

  • "Server was uneducated in product-Chef's prepare inconsistent food-management does not care. Save your money and go somewhere else"

  • "This restaurant was a quite positive surprise. The decor is ascetic, but the food is far better than the decor might suggest. Sushi was really good and at very reasonable prices. Definitely would love to come back. "

  • "I've been living in the City for a year now and Sushi Yasaka is one of the rare places that make me want to ride the subway for one hour to go and eat there. I went there a couple of time before and found it amazing, so I took my parents, visiting from France. It was their first Japanese restaurant and they loved it. I could'nt think my father would love japanese food, but he did. My mother liked it so much that she reordered makis roll as desert... But their mille crepe is amazing too. Service is great, food is amazing, just go and you won't be disapointed."

  • "Being a michelin star guide enthusiast I must say Yasaka definitely deserves one, each plate kept on getting better, and I must say the desserts were among the top we had all around the world. "

  • "The restaurant has some of the best sushi in manhattan"

  • "Maybe this what the UWS has to offer in terms of Sushi. My advice would simply be don't go for sushi on the UWS. I would absolutely not go back again."

  • "Great Japanese food at reasonable prices with great service and nice, comfortable, low key ambiance."

  • "The food is good, particularly the sushi and sashimi. But the receptionist is very impolite. No smile at all. She should know she is in service industry. Smiling face is very important."

  • "One of the best sushi deals in the city. The fish is outstanding. For $45 the large malaise can't be beat anywhere. The absolutely freshest fish. Even the rice is great. We just loved it. And try the seaweed salad. Terrific. "

  • "Fantastic as always!! This place is always packed. Best sushi on the UWS!! "

  • "I was drawn here by a google search of 'organic Japanese ' but the waiter threw me off as he kept saying all the fish was farm raised ... Even the King Salmon and Tuna ! Farm raised tuna?? It was an odd conversation..."

  • "The quality of the food here is exceptional. I love the tofu appetizer ($6), tho can't remember what it's called. It's like a soup and an appetizer in one. The kinpira was a bit too sweet. Our sush, salmon, was exquisite. It's pretty loud in here and the service is courteous, but a bit swift for relaxation. No wonder there's a crowd. It's reasonable, delicious and they move you in and out."
    Dined on 5/20/2014
  • "This is my favorite place to grab sushi and I go there pretty often. They have a very good lunch special although I've noticed that they've been cutting their sashimi slices thinner and thinner... the fish is always really fresh and it's generally a good deal."
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "Ate here Frinight with a reservation for 10 pm. Food was good but they rushed us from the moment we sat down. They wanted to close. They should not take 10 pm reservations if they really do not want you there. "

  • "The service was just ok but who cares when the food is so good. I have eaten at manhattans best japanese restaurants and spent hundreds of dollars and this place was better then all of them. I will be back soon. "

  • "I lived in Japan for a couple of months (over a decade ago now) and have gone to a lot of Japanese restaurants in NYC (where I've lived my whole life). This is one of the more authentic sushi spots. Also the sushi is amazing, and the omakase is very reasonable in price."

  • "I have frequented many Japanese restaurants in the area and this is the one that my family go back to time and time again when we are looking for quality sushi at a reasonable price. "

  • "I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the fish here. I've been several times over the past few months, and it has been quite consistent, which is a good sign. The only challenge is that it gets very busy during prime time, making walk-ins a bit difficult."

  • "As they promised, the fish tasted delicious and fresh. The major downside was the service. We made our reservation for 2:30pm, the only slot left on OpenTable. We didn't realize that the kitchen closes at 3:00pm. Some people in our party were late, so they didn't get to order their own food. The waitress kept rushing us to put in our orders, which is understandable, but she wasn't very pleasant about it. Her and another waitress had very sour faces on while serving us, which made us feel very uncomfortable. Luckily one of the waiters was very nice and even let us have cake without charging us. I'll be back for the food (it's a great deal), but def before 2:30pm."
