  • "My date and I had the sushi tasting menu. I've been to a few sushi places in the area, excluding Makoto. Sushi Taro is the best I have had. The rice is well prepared in terms of seasoning and temperature - definitely the best in the area. They bring you a soy sauce brush which is a cool touch. The ambiance of the restaurant is not really great. Sitting in the regular dining area feels like you're having a lunch special at a cheap place. I will have to come back for the omakase counter in the back when I have time for a more personal and special experience."

For a restaurant that insists you show up for your reservation (they called me when we were 3 or 4 minutes late to make sure we would show up) such an attitude might translate into making sure menu items are in stock!"

  • "I would never go to this establishment again. Horrible customer service, although the food was decent it was nothing spectacular. Some of the sushi was good, but some of it was definitely not fresh. There are so many amazing places in D.C. I'm surprised this place has stayed in business. I have never left a place feeling so turned off."

  • "My friend and I had been to Sushi Taro a couple of years ago. We ordered a la carte sushi (no Tasting Menu) and the quality was great, well worth the higher price. This time, we did the same, and every roll we ordered was sub-par...average at best. The rice on each one was on the heavy side, and the fish/flavor was just ok. I wouldn't be complaining if Taro wasn't supposed to be such a high-end/high quality restaurant. Perhaps the Tasting Menu is much better... but we will not be returning for a la carte. Service was great and friendly."

  • "Our first visit to DC and hotel concierge recommended this sushi restaurtant. Both photos of the restaurant and details of the tasting menu raised my expectations, but the reality fell flat. From online photos I expected an elegant interior - it was casual and comfortable but don"t feel compelled to change out of your jeans. Noise levels inside the full restaurant were loud. We selected the sushi tasting menu. The quality of the sushi was excellent but the presentation was normal - usually 3 different pieces of nigiri per white plate. I was expecting the tasting menu presentation to be more unusual, more constructed scenes on the plate, a mixture of different plate materials - clay, wood, glass, etc. Service was excellent."

  • "I entered the restaurant at 5:30pm, when it first opened. I was wearing a sleeveless shirt and basketball shorts. Upon checking in, the hostess says there is a dress code but next time I will need to wear a shirt that has sleeves. Nowhere on the website or in the restaurant says there is a dress code. She also did not really use English to inform me, but rather just point at my arms and bottom half of my body. Server was uptight and not friendly. Food was mediocre as I've had way better sashimi on the west coast. Overall, Sushi Taro was overhyped. Will not come back."

  • "While the food was excellent the overwhelming noise originated from the kitchen and completely drowned out the nice zen music that was playing and the vibrant conversations people were having. We were not even seated that close to the kitchen. The service was not great, we had the June tasting menu the first course of which is an aperitif of plum wine for which we had to wait 10 mins after ordering, left with only water to drink. The food was exquisite, excellent value for money and really innovative. I would probably not come here again as the experience itself was not on par with the food."

  • "I have heard this is the best sushi restaurant in town, and after eating there I do not dispute that. A friend and I ordered the kaiseki tasting menu, which was mostly excellent. Let's just say you don't want to go this route unless you are an adventurous eater who will try anything once, including whole baby squid, whole crabs in edible shells, mostly raw fish, various gelatins, pork belly, etc. It does come with three nigiri pieces at the end as sort of a "thank you for trusting us" moment, but if you are interested in sushi, the kaiseki menu is not for you. I am interested to go back and try the sushi tasting menu or just order a la carte. "

  • "This is my first time went to Japanese rest in DC area since I moved from CA. When I saw the rate I thought I want to give it shot. The rice isn't great compare with the price they charged. At the end my favorite restaurant in CA (Mikuni, Taro) still win my palate compare this place. Our server, she's really have low talk, hard to heard her explanation about the food that she brought. "

  • "This was one of the greatest dining experience I've had outside of Japan. The sushi tasting menu was outstanding. I've had similar meals in while living in Japan, and this held up to all of them. The courses were both authentic, and innovative. Our server was attentive, polite, and staged the experience perfectly. While not inexpensive, I would say that the value for money was brilliant. Honestly one of the best meals I've ever had in the United States."

  • "I had the lunch special. For a place that calls itself a premier japanese restaurant, the rice was poorly cooked. Service was lackluster. But then again, given the price , maybe what i got is fair. The rest if the good was great, but for a Japanese restaurant tj get the rice so dry... It's not good in my book. I had a non Japanese waitress and either she was tired or just overly meek. Asked her about some dishes but she wasn't overly informative. "

Ever since returning from japan it has been hard to find a good authentic place where they concentrate on the freshnesss of the fish rather than dress it up with sauces, grilling etc. This place is fantastic if you want fresh sushimi.   • "food is impeccable. we got a papaya salad which was delicious and the rainbow roll and spider roll were the best. the plum cocktail is also delicious and strong. but the seating area is really industrial feeling, maybe because of the high ceilings and weird lighting. wasn't a fan of the ambiance but good looking people dine here so overall i recommend this."

I am Japanese and had been to so many Chinese or Korean style Japanese restaurant. But this place is purely authentic Japanese just like the food served at authentic sushi restaurant in Japan."

  • "Having had 2 Kaiseki and 1 sushi dinner tasting here before, my friend and I tried the suppon (soft-shell snapping turtle) tasting with both the sashimi & sushi upgrades. It was actually the same as the regular kaiseki tasting, but the 4th+8th courses were substituted w/a suppon soup (4th) & a suppon-egg-and-seaweed "risotto." This 150 minute dining experience (incl. ordering, check-paying) was my favorite of all the dinner tastings I've done at Taro. Food was excellent across all courses. Sashimi upgrade certainly felt premium. Service was friendly, and they let us close the place out @11pm on a Wed. We were thanked at the end very genuinely/profusely by our waitress for being adventurous enough to try the suppon tasting, which was sweet."

  • "I love Sushi Taro for lunch. It is not super expensive, but the food is excellent. They have amazing soups for a cold winter day and you can add a kirashi set sashimi bowl with it. I had their lunch special, which was a soup with chicken, tempura, and udon. There is one waitress there who is wonderful and I usually have her, but this time the waitress was just not as trained well as the other. Maybe she was new. Not a deterrent ultimately."

  • "Few, if any, peers exist in DC for this restaurant's sushi and other offerings. The main barriers here are - price, confusion and barely interested servers. As long as you don't care how long it takes for a server to approach you and will play the "flag them down" game - you'll have the opportunity to put together a truly memorable, expensive meal. I'm willing to assume that the quality or provenance of the fish cause the extraordinarily high prices - but wonder. And the confusion - there are four different menus brought to the table, as well as the sushi menu. Nevertheless, the agadashi tofu, miso black cod, eel, sea urchin, baby yellowtail, geoduck, new zealand salmon and many more offerings are uncommonly fine."

  • "I have always enjoyed sashimi, but not in any sophisticated way. So I was pleasantly surprised when just the quality of the ingredients and the food on the plate (the Tokujo Sashimi) alone suddenly taught me many things about the logic behind the preparation of different seafood. I will never look at my usual sashimi the same way again; Sushi Taro spoiled me too much. They served the best/freshest fried oysters I ever had, as well. Service was friendly and attentive, but they also let me quietly enjoy my food."

  • "My wife and I had the Kaiseki. Pros: Nice variety in the traditional Kaiseki, Sushi tasted fresh, service was a well paced, a very good amount of food. Cons: The flavors in some of the dishes were a little muted, but I expect that in Japanese food. Overall a great meal which reminded me of some of my dinners in Japan."

  • "Fun restaurant to visit. Food seems a bit more authentic Japanese with more diverse choices than smaller restaurants. Everything was well prepared and service was excellent. Our waitress, Pong, was helpful and attentive. It is a bit expensive, as you would expect eating in the city rather than the suburbs. The wine list was long - although they possibly do not have everything that is listed; the first two wines we requested, they did not have. It was good to have the Open Table reservation since they were turning away people at the door."
