Transcendent sushi meets its equal with creative appetizers and entrees at Gari, the 64-seat Upper West Side outpost of Gari's (Masatoshi Sugio) popular Upper East Side restaurant. Gari also features a creative menu of cooked fare from Executive Chef/Partner Mike Lim. Tony Chi of tonychi and associates has created an environment where Gari and his team can craft their cuisine in pure, harmonized comfort - a virtual sushi studio - and every seat in the house allows guests to observe the chefs/artists at work.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Omakase was average compared to other great sushi restaurants in nyc. Service was subpar. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. What a waste. Seriously."

  • "First of all, must say a la carte menus are overpriced. Good to stick with set or course menus. Enjoyed Kama toro and seared scallop of sushi deluxe. Tempra of young ayu (sweet fish) was oily, but tasty. Hamachi with jalapeño sounds famous though it was so so. Yes, tomato tempra over salmon sushi was quite interesting. Service was good. It was too cold to dine inside due to blowing wind from air conditioner. Michelin guide is always too generous to Japanese restaurants."

  • "I would not recommend. Clearly over rated. I was disappointed."

  • "the sauces didn't really complement the fish all of the time. Four people omakase with two bottles of sake (easy to do). $1,000 and I left hungry."

  • "Lunch is my favorite time because it's not as crowded or loud as in the evening. The quality of the sushi is outstandingly delicious aand comparable to the 29 rating in Zagat that their most recent rating for Sasabune. Checking with an astute friend who has been to both, we are definitely fans of Sushi of Gari's Omakase. Recently I ate with 3 other friends who were unfamiliar with this fine cuisine and had the Gari Chef Delux Sushi of nigiri sushi and a role for less than half the price of Omakase that was superb, and quite satisfying. We also enjoyoed edamame, spinach goma-ae and kombucha tempura. In writing this review, it's making my mouth water just thinking back about how much I have enjoyed always eating here. And they deliver!"

  • "consistent-great sushi -- always meets expectations- great neighborhood regular spot"
    Dined on 8/5/2014
  • "We met our friends for dinner at Gari with the expectation to enjoy the food and catch up. The food was great. The fish was fresh and well prepared. Unfortunately, the expectation is that once you are done eating you have to leave. When we finished eating, the check was brought promptly and shortly after, we were asked to move our conversation to another area of a restaurant because our table was combined with another to accomodate the large group. Be prepared to take any conversations elsewhere."

  • "Simply the most inventive sushi around... get the omakase and enjoy"
    Dined on 8/2/2014
  • "As usual, Gari does not disappoint. However, when dining at a restaurant that provides such an outstanding sushi experience, it is insulting that they charge extra for a little more salad dressing."

  • "More expensive than other Japanese restaurants in neighborhood, but worth it. Quality and service are outstanding."

  • "Been going to Gari on the upper east side for years...just starting going to this one on the west side. both are excellent; always. the west side restaurant is bigger and a bit nicer but I'll go to either any time. was there 3days in a row and I can continue going."

  • "This wasn't my first visit to Gari and it won't be my last. I went with the omakase and each piece was excellent."
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "I have been to the location on Upper West Side a couple of times and I enjoy the novelties of what they do - but I have to admit that it is just sushi with an interesting bit of sauce added to it - so it shouldn't cost $300 for a party of two for dinner....just saying."

  • "A real Gem- The sushi is unbelievably fresh, our favorite was the salmon sushi topped with the grilled tomato and the yellowtail topped with the jalapeño pepper. The rolls were delicious, fresh, and cut into 8 edible size pieces. The service was fast and the restaurant was completely filled to capacity. The only negative is the noise level. It is hard to hear if you are more than 4 and that is still tough at times. However it would not prevent me from returning."

  • "for a long time. Every bite was excellent. The big surprise for us was the foie gras appetizer. Delicious decadence!"

  • "We have eaten here many times and have the omakasi sushi. This time it seemed even better than ever. Will go back again."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "The Omakse sushi is very good with superior fish quality, but not remotely inventive. It is a fortune for a small amount of simple fish. It cost us close to $300 for 1 app , 2 drinks and 12 bites of sushi. Not at all worth it. The restaurant itself has no decor to speak of. I have been to cheap local sushi restaurants with a better ambiance"

  • "Sushi was very fresh & delicious. Nice place for a quiet meal. Service was attentive."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "Gari sushi is as good as it gets on the UWS. On a recent weeknight visit the place was jumping, in contrast to the quieter weekends. A lot of suits and ties -- the word is out."
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "Not sure why this restaurant is rated so highly. We got the omakase and were sorely disappointed by the quality of the fish as well as the whole experience. The omakase came in 3 bulk courses which, even setting aside the quality of the food (which was poor), made it feel rushed and not as special as the usual omakase experience with many courses of one or two pieces each."

  • "great food creative always different, the will eliminate foods that you do not eat"

  • "Although it all tasted great there was very little food and a very BIG price tag"
    Dined on 6/19/2014
  • "Best omakase anywhere. No need for soy sauce-each piece has it's own topping. Totally overpriced and worth every penny!"
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "Freshest and most innovative sushi on the Upper West Side!"
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "I have dined at this restaurant many times and it is always very good. This time however, we were told when we were seated that there was a notation on our reservation that stated we had to be done by 8:15. We were seated at 6:30, so 8:15 is not unreasonable, but we were there for a relaxing celebratory dinner with friends and somehow being given a time limit is ridiculous. Waitress was constantly coming to take our order and food came out rapidly. We ended up ordering sushi one piece at a time to slow them down. The meal totaled $500.00 for 4 people before tip. I think for this amount of money, we should be able to stay as long as we like."

  • "This place is a high end Japanese restaurant that happens to serve some sushi-esque food but it is so much more. The creativity, attention to extreme detail, and utmost quality of the food makes it a standout. Yes it is expensive, but compare it to Nobu, not to a neighborhood sushi place."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "You must order the omakase! It's out of this world amazing. No need for soy sauce because every piece comes with it's own unique, mouth watering topping. It's very $$$$ but literally the best sushi I have ever had and I lived in Japan! There is a Gari special for a little less $$$ because it has fewer pieces but still awesome. Do it at least once and you will want it again and again. Regular sushi even from the finest places just won't do it for you anymore. "

  • "I haven't been to EVERY sushi place the city has to offer, but the omakase at Gari on Columbus was spectacular. Even my date, who's more reserved with her sushi preferences, was thrilled. And the service! Top-notch all the way. Not once did we feel hurried or neglected. DEFINITELY recommended for people who are tired of tuna rolls and want to step up their sushi game. And for those of you worried about price...well, you get what you pay for! $300 for out-of-this-world sushi and a delicious bottle of cold sake is what you'd pay at any first-rate sushi restaurant, whether it's in Manhattan, San Francisco, or Vancouver."

  • "Everything there is terrific, but their Omakase in particular is absolutely off the charts! "The Best"...."

  • "Food excellent, prices high, service friendly but pushy - they needed that table back and it felt a tad uncomfortable"
    Dined on 5/22/2014
  • "Omakase is delicious but expensive ($240 for two) for 8 pieces of Sushi and 4 pieces of Sashimi. We ordered more food. Also, Gari, who is on the UES, is the better Sushi imaginative genius. The chefs here and at 46 Street just imitate his pieces...not quite the same."

  • "always consistent-best sushi in town-great ,courtious service- friendly environment"

  • "This was my second time of dining at Gari @ Columbus, and it was, again, a very satisfying experience. The sushi was presented in an ambitious and imaginative way, and it tasted absolutely gorgeous. The noise level was at first a bit high, as the place was packed, but it calmed down later as my friend and I finished our dinner, enjoying every bite."

  • "this great sushi place.. on any list of the city's best - works EVERY time. "

  • "Considering the prices and the strict reservation policy here, I would have expected a more elegant setting. The ambiance of this restaurant did not feel any different than that of much less expensive sushi restaurants - formica-style uncovered tables, wooden chopsticks, bright lighting, etc. The food was average. The service was extremely pleasant and attentive, but to the point of feeling rushed - no sooner did we finish chewing the last bite of a particular dish than the wait staff was approaching to ask us what we wanted next. I would not return to this restaurant."

  • "Lunch on a Sunday. Trying to avoid the "brunch" scene with Eggs Benedict, etc. So, we make a reservation at Sushi Gari on Columbus. We walk in and want to sit at the counter. We are told that it is omakase at the counter only, clarifying that it is only sushi. OK. Then the server starts a litany of what we can and can't order and adds that around 8 pairs of sushi will cost around $140 per person, all before offering us a menu. We excuse ourselves from the counter and move to a table. We start ordering a la carte. Oops, sorry, you have the dinner menu, here's the lunch menu. And the lunch menu does not have a lot of the special things on the dinner menu... So, a mundane set of dishes. Too bad Sushi Sasabune is not open on Sundays..."
