Sushi of Gari 46 focuses primarily on serving Gari’s “Signature Omakase” Sushi dinner which shows off his expertise with marinated and spiced raw and slightly cooked ingredients, in addition to a menu of traditional Japanese dishes. • "One of the best places in town to enjoy omakase. Never disappointing."

  • "Over rated. Over priced. Terribly rude service and good that was just ok."

  • "The place was very nice, very well decorated. The food was simply amazing! For any sushi lover this is a must! For those who don't eat sushi the menu may be a little limited but the food was amazing! The staff is very welcoming with traditional Japanese greetings, and very friendly! A must!"

  • "The sushi here can be seen as a fusion of sorts. Gari uses ingredients such as truffle oil, tomatoes, onions, etc. to put a modern twist. Not sure if it was worth the price (~$150 for 16 pieces), but it was an interesting experience. There were some great pieces, and some not worth the money. I recommend requesting the Santa Baraba uni, Salmon belly, and Toro. Stick to the plain and simple."

  • "Everything about Sushi of Gari was incredible. The whole Omakase experience will be forever placed in my heart and mind as a wonderful memory for the palate. Chef took care of us well, answered all our questions, and most of all provided us the best sushi in the city. Thank you Sushi of Gari for letting me take this moment home :)"

  • "One of the better sushi places in the city. Have been several times and the fish is always super fresh."

  • "Great for dining before or after theater. Not too heavy and delicious. Highly recommend doing omakase."

  • "Sushi Gari is my regular lunch spot with important colleagues. Expensive but worth it."

  • "Waitress aggressively pushed me to up our sake bottle price knowing I was entertaining customers. Then the service was mediocre. At one point, it was a solid 20 minutes between omikase servings. Food was mostly very nice with interesting assortments. Presentation was good if not exceptional. 5 people omikase. 1 sake bottle, 4 beers, 2 wine glasses= $1,030. Not a great value when viewed as a whole. Recommended with an expense account with a good midtown location. Otherwise, there are far better quality and value around manhattan."

  • "Did not care for the selection or wait staff. Was very disappointed once the cfef special was brought the food was good but not worth the price. I've had so much better. Toku, Nobu, Zuma"

  • "Sushi of Gari is well established at multiple locations in NYC. It has a well deserved, positive reputation. The service is great and food very good."

  • "We had the "chefs tasting menu" for dinner and it was below our expectation. The fish was great, very fresh. However the souces over the sushi were not what you would expect for a japanese place. We had a sushi tasting like pizza and another like a hotdog, with a lot of tomato souce over it. strange, and not what we were expecting for the night. I just wouldnt ask for the tasting menu again. All the rest was pretty good. The deeply fried soft crab shell for starter is a must! And the service is perfect."

  • "It seemed clear that the waitress was trained to aggressively try to sell the most expensive items on the menu, then hurry us through the meal and not take any cues nor offer basic conveniences, such as an extra dish or water for the table. Not a trace of real hospitality. Very disappointing, after having once liked this restaurant, now I won't go back. Sushi was good quality but nowhere near the best in the city (Yasuda in my book)."

  • "Went with my husband for pre-theatre dinner. We decided on the omakase menu as we have chosen that option many times before at our favorite sushi joints in DC and Seattle. Unfortunately, Sushi of Gari 46 failed to impress. The food was good but nothing special. The big shock came when we got our check. It was $350 for two! We did get a $40 bottle of wine, but even with that we failed to see why this sushi was SO expensive, especially since it was only mediocre. We love our other sushi joints in DC (Sei, Sushi Taro) and Seattle (Nishino, Moshi Moshi) where the food is great and the price is reasonable for what you get. What a shame that Sushi of Gari 46 left a bad taste in our mouths - and a whole in our wallet!"

  • "The most memorable sushi dinner we've ever had. A great way to end a perfect evening after a show, a walk around Times Square or whatever you are celebrating."

  • "We have been to Sushi of Gari several times and yet we are always so amazed by the experience. The food and presentation is amazing - this is what the best sushi tastes like. We love the Tuna of Gari and HIGHLY recommend it. As a side note, our daughter and friends went the night before for after a broadway show as a high school graduation present. The staff were very professional to the group and provided great service. They loved the food and the wide selection of sushi and cooked foods. "

  • "delicious omikase! we sat at the sushi bar, and the experience was top-notch. great service, tasty sake, and out-of-this-world sushi and sashimi. "

  • "It is not a traditional sushi (I ordered Omakase) as all of them came out seasoned. Using the same in-house (I assume) sauce for every sushi they served...Lots of innovative sushi for sure as my wife and I enjoyed much but the bill was a bit questionable. "

  • "This is my second time to sushi of Gari. I had tasting menu for my first visit a while ago, and I just got a sushi set last night. I think the tasting menu is so much better, so def get the tasting menu if you are going there for dinner! This is a good Japanese restaurant that worth the money! "

  • "However, we still couldn't get our table after 1:30. What's the point of making a reservation? Our sushi omakase was not as good as it was a couple of months ago. The worst thing about our experience was that we had to leave the restaurant abruptly because the kitchen was closing....?"

  • "...quite noisy for a Japanese restaurant... lack of transparence ahead on price of extra... definitively not cheap but worth the experience!"
    Dined on 5/27/2014
  • "It was the first time I had omakase. I enjoyed the experience. I would have liked some other kinds of sushi, sashimi, tampura, or rolls. It was hard to know how much I was spending until I got the bill. Maybe an option to limit the amount by setting a dollar amount to stop serving."

  • "Sushi by Gari was a unique sushi experience. Each piece was made with special topping/flavor. Try the chefs choice Omisake. Top notch!"

  • "A very nice overall experience, excellent service and the food was very tasty. I would heartily recommend friends/family to this place for before show meals"

  • "Sushi is way above average. Went with my husband and we are total foodies. had the sushi special platters..each piece of sushi was divine and delicious. Definitely pricey but you get what you pay for. After going here, you will become a sushi snob. "

  • "It is so good that you may never want to eat sushi anywhere else. I have eaten Sushi at many great Sushi bars including outside of the fish market in Tokyo Japan, Nobu Tokyo & NYC, Morimoto NYC, Blow Fish Toronto as well as at Blue Ribbon Sushi Las Vegas and I rate "Sushi of Gari 46" every bit as good if not better than any Sushi I have eaten. The decor is simple you & can find other Sushi bars that are more "Up Scale" in their look but you will be hard pressed to find better tasting sushi. We ate the omakase (tasting menu) on Sunday May 18 2014 and while not cheap it was worth it with every bite. "

  • "The sushi, service and sake was the best we've ever had! We were 15 minutes late due to traffic but they still got us fed and to our show with time to spare. Great restaurant, great food!"

  • "Gari has great omakase for those who want a little more on their fish than soy sauce and wasabi. I recommend the salmon with smoked tomato purée and the foie gras. The fatty tuna pieces were also melt in your mouth delicious. Our waitress was very attentive and nice. Our green tea and water cups were always full. Just note that this location is a bit small for a large party. The uptown location is just as delicious and might be able to accommodate bigger groups. "

  • "The food was very good but the service didn't follow the expectations. We were pushed to pay and quit the restaurant."

  • "This is wonderful sushi! The quality of the fish is above reproach. Just order the omakase and sit back and enjoy the unusual flavors."

  • "My spouse and I wanted to experience a good such restaurant and being from out of town we chose this place on reputation, not price. That said, we were not disappointed. Service was quick and the staff were pleasant. The food(and we were hungry) came quickly and was delicious. We did not simply order one plate either...we had soup, seaweed salad, tempura, dumplings and then the sushi! All items were prepared well and tasted wonderful. The warm cup of green tea to finish the meal was also a nice touch. This restaurant is small but lively and I highly recommend you also visit the restroom before you leave and head back out into the city."

  • "After reading many reviews, my mom and I decided to come to Sushi of Gari 46 prior to seeing a broadway show. We both decided to splurge and do the "omakase", where the chef sends out different kinds of sushi, taking note of certain things we don't care for. It was expensive (at least $95 per person), BUT, it was worth every single penny. It truly was the most amazing sushi I have ever had in my entire life! We each had 12 pieces total and were too full to try more. The fatty tuna was so good I wanted to marry it. "
