Sushi of Gari 46 focuses primarily on serving Gari’s “Signature Omakase” Sushi dinner which shows off his expertise with marinated and spiced raw and slightly cooked ingredients, in addition to a menu of traditional Japanese dishes. The sake selection, by Gari Sugio, is one of the best in town along with a limited wine selection of fine wines.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I cant enjoy the dinner, seats and tables are too close, too noisy inside, price is way overpriced, will never come back again."

  • "We tried to get to the Columbus location on my actual birthday but thanks to LaGuardia and the weather we were not downtown until 11:30pm that night...so, diner dinner for my birthday! Instead, we made it to the 46th Street location a couple days later. We were not disappointed. The omikase was amazing. We were dazzled with creations whose flavor and quality were among the best that I have had in my 30 years of sushi eating. The chef works in flavor pairings for the fish that are ethereal. Their selection of sake was also very impressive. It was an expensive evening for a group of three but since it was the belated birthday dinners for three of us, it was worth it!"

  • "Omakase was mediocre. I've had better sushi for half the price."

  • "Highly recommend the omakase. Tailored to your tastes, scalable, and extremely fresh and diverse flavors. Spectacular!"

  • "I suppose for the restaurant would be good pre or post theater, but I wouldn't recommend it solely for dinning. The 'Omakase" was "good" but as one cycled mainly through tuna and salmon sushi, with the old clam here and there (2 no more); one couldn't help thinking that there was a poor variety. It was a one time experience."

  • "First off Sushi Gari was great. The service was quick but I also did not seemed rushed. The space is tight but most sushi bars seem to have that vibe. As for the meal, it was outstanding. We both chose the Omakasa (Chef's special), with a few other items thrown in. This seems to be the way they steer you. Very creative and delectable morsels of sushi and sashimi. Keep in mind they will ask if you want more and if you decide to keep going the bill will grow exponentially (which ours did). Our bill seemed outrageous for two people but I knew that going in so I am not complaining. I just thought about how much we spent and for the overall experience I think it was high. I will go back but next time I think I will order off the menu."

  • "I love this place. Service is outstanding and sushi and other food is very fresh and tasty. They know how to get you out to the theatre without feeling rushed."

  • "The sushi at Sushi of Gari is one of the best around. I have been here many times, and the food is consistently fantastic. I would go as far as to say certain pieces are possibly the best pieces in the city. Definitely recommend!"
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "Had a wonderful "omakase" experience at the sushi bar. Each piece was fresh and amazing with a great variety of fish. Bring your wallet but every morsel was worth it. A sensual experience- be prepared to moan out loud! Wine portions are skimpy and pricey- the only negative!"

  • "I enjoyed the food, the service was good, however the prices for omakase are ridiculous. The bill for 4 people with 3 bottles of $65 sake was $950. That was a 3 trays of 12 pieces each. It is not worth the price. The desserts were good. We won't be coming back because of the prices."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "Perfect sushi spot! The Spicy Tuna was divine, the Gyoza was a delicious blend of pan fried pork and vegetables and the fried oyster roll was uniquely eloquent and delectable."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "I went to this restaurant with high expectations. It was my first experience with omakase, which is sort of like a prix fixe tasting menu where the sushi chef prepares unique rolls for you without you knowing exactly what is going to be served. I almost never eat sushi unless it's from a great place (fresh fish flown in daily), and I figured Sushi of Gari would one of those places. The fish definitely tasted fresh, but it just didn't taste that unique. Almost all of the rolls had varying amounts of wasabi in it. Not an overpowering amount, certainly, but when you're sampling a wide array of rolls and sashimi, after a while it gets annoying to keep tasting it in every bite. Especially for the price, it just wasn't near worth it."

  • "This is possibly the best sushi I have every eaten. Definitely try the Omikase, it was amazing. the dinner prices are steep. Lunch seems to be a better bargain."

  • "The restaurant is good - but there are a LOT of good sushi places in NYC. This is nothing special. And they are full of themselves. You have a 10 minute window or they give your table away??? You have to guarantee your reservation on your credit card? Spare me."

  • "Same ingredients, same recipes, yet the result is a flop. Stick to Gari on the upper East side and spare yourself a major disapointment!"

  • "I heard so much about Sushi of Gari that I was utterly disappointed at the quality of the food and especially the service. Our waitress must have been having a bad day as she was rude and not friendly at all. My friend and I wanted to share the sashimi dinner since we were ordering other apps. She kept saying we couldn't share, that it was only one piece per fish. I had never heard that before. We ended ordering sashimi and sushi, which was too much for the amount of food we normally eat. The sashimi was ok, I expected it to be amazing because of all the fame this place has. The tuna was not that great, I have had better in other sushi joints. The best dish for us was the dessert. But I wouldn't go back."

  • "This narrow, charming restaurant was full of people when we arrived for our 6:00 Saturday reservation, but our table was ready. The place was snug and lively, and the food was excellent. We had a relatively simple meal of noodle soups, with little shrimp dumplings to start and a few pieces of sushi. Every part of the meal was carefully prepared and beautifully presented. Even my hot green tea was unusually good. I would certainly return."

  • "As a Japanese seeking authentic sushi, this place did not deliver. However, if you want a new twist to traditional sushi, I could see someone enjoying it. Their recommended sushi deluxe or omakase seemed quite elaborate and pretty. Their regular sushi was eh. I did not see attention to detail, or any master work that was commendable. The service was slow, and waiters busy. Their chawanmushi was however, incredibly delicious. Overall, it was fine but I certainly will not be returning. I have greater respect for a place that does the basics extremely well as well as their signature dishes."

  • "I had the best Omakase I've ever tasted. I've been to hundreds of Japanese restaurants and this place is to die for! I know the Omakase sounds expensive at $100 per person for 12 pieces of sushi but every single piece is worth it. The flavors are incredible and it is a dining experience you won't forget. Go go go!!!"

  • "In a neighborhood filled with questionable restaurants, Sushi of Gari was such a pleasant surprise. We arrived before our Broadway show and they knew we needed to be out on time. When we arrived it was not busy, but filled up quickly. Our waitress was great and was always available if we needed anything. The food was excellent."

  • "I've been to Japan and visited one of the best sushi bars, but sushi of Gari impressed me way more! Outstanding signature sushi, specialty sashimi, crab dumplings... Service (visited 3 times for the last few months) was always super kind and fast! Recommendations..."

  • "The food was very good, especially the spicy tuna roll and yellowtail roll. The service was very efficient and quick. The only negative at all is that the tales are very close together and when full, there is a fair amount of noise. But for sure a very good place to go in the theater district."

  • "Really creative sushi (and sashimi too), and with some really quality fish. A fun and incredible meal. A very special night indeed."

  • "Not the best sushi I've ever had, but good. Just be very careful here... You pay around $10-$15 per bite... An omakase can quickly lead to $500+ for two people before you are full. I felt guilty for spending so much money since the bill was more than twice as much as the best sushi I've ever had. For what we got we could've donated a couple hundred bucks and had a better dinner elsewhere - really not worth it. The waitress was the high point here since the sushi chef only stated what we served then went back to it. There was no indication the price was going to be outrageous until we got the bill... What a shockvthat ruined the experience."

  • "This restaurant is delicious and wonderful. Highly recommend the omakase. We had 31 pieces for $200 between two. The chefs and waiters are extremely kind and charming. Come here before a Broadway show! Sake is also delicious."

  • "For celebrating a friend's birthday the Tuna of Gari was very tasty, but unfortunately was not the best sushi we've ever had. It would have been nice to have a more descriptive menu since we are not novices. Unfortunately, our server only knew to suggest the Omakase and did not seem as knowledgeable as we would have hoped. Also, the service was a bit too efficient even though it was clearly not a dinner rush -- please don't remove plates or glasses without asking. I would like to go back for the Omakase but at $100 per person I want to know what I ate!!"
    Dined on 1/4/2014
  • "We know fish. Sushi of Gari is all over it--you know this if you've been there, but for those of you who have not, think Nobu, Blowfish (10 yrs ago), and Akiko (in San Fran). The omasake is $120 p/p, and worth it."

  • "The sushi was delicious, very fresh. We went with the Omakase which we later learned was $98 a peice. Edamame was fresh and the spinach salad was delicious. Of course, you'd expect to pay for this in NYC however the prices were over the top. Our server had a stuffy attitude and we felt like she hovered WAY too much. Atmosphere was fair, nothing to rave about. $300+ for dinner for two and my husband was still hungry when we left."

  • "I went to Sushi of Gari with very high expectations. My favorite restaurants are Kurumazushi and Yasuda, so I was very I retested to finally try Gari. Well, I was very disappointed. The price for Omakase for my wife (sushi) and myself (sashimi) was three hundred dollars (before tip), as they explained that sashimi was twice as expensive as sushi. For the price, I was very disappointed. We had only two pieces (tuna and macarel) that we thought were great. The rest of the meal was mediocre at best. If this was a mid range sushi place, it would be fine. But as a high end sushi establishment, it was very disappointing."

  • "Sushi was decent but we were highly recommended to get the she's special course by a waitress which is 100dollars a person and portion was unsatisfying. We had to eat chinese food after dinner. The reason we went for the special course is because we were never handed the menu with individual sushi price so we pretty much thought there was no choice. During meal, we find out other customers were being handed extra menu with individual prices and were able to order piece by piece. We never got that menu showed to us and had no choice and felt ripped off."

  • "Took us in on time; service was excellent; did not feel rushed and made show with time to spare! Get the omakase($1120 ) and the tuna of Gari( $59)- they are as good as it gets! Will definitely go back."

  • "My husbands and I are avid sushi eaters. We have eaten at Sushi of Gari on the UWS and UES, which we liked better than this outpost. However, for similar cost there are so much better places in Manhattan such as Soto and 15 East."
    Dined on 12/13/2013
  • "The sushi was good, fresh and tasted like good sushi should. If you love really good sashimi and like go to a sushi bars with a lot of different chooses, then this is not the place, it was good but your selection was limited. I have been to Yasuda many times, price level is the same but selection, quality and overall experience can't be compared. Service was good. If you love sushi and are okay with this price level, then go some where else."
